White light modeling, algorithm development, and validation on the micro-arcsecond metrology testbed

The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), scheduled for launch in early 2010, is an optical interferometer that will perform narrow angle and global wide angle astrometry with unprecedented accuracy, providing differential position accuracies of 1uas, and 4uas global accuracies in position, proper motion and parallax. SIM astrometric measurements are synthesized from pathlength delay measurements provided by three Michelson-type, white light interferometers. Two of the interferometers are used for making precise measurements of variations in the spacecraft attitude, while the third interferometer performs the science measurement. The ultimate performance of SIM relies on a combination of precise fringe measurements of the interfered starlight with picometer class relative distance measurements made between a set of fiducials that define the interferometer baseline vectors. The focus of the present paper is on the development and analysis of algorithms for accurate white light fringe estimation, and on the preliminary validation of these algorithms on the Micro-Arcsecond Testbed (MAM).

SIM white light on-board processing algorithms

Interferometry in optical astronomy is an important and growing field of astronomical observation. A number of stellar interferometers have come online over the past several years, and several more are due to be operational in the near future. In addition, space based interferometers are also planned missions of NASA's Origins program, including the Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), the focus of the present paper. The fundamental measurement made by each of these interferometers is the white light fringe measurement to determine the optical pathlength delay between the two arms of the interferometer. SIM makes white light measurements with three independent interferometers observing three different objects. Two of these are the "guide" interferometers that observe bright objects (approximately 7th magnitude) to track the rigid body motion of the instrument. The third interferometer, the "science" interferometer, observes the science targets of interest.

AMSR-2 Daily Snow Depth Data Product Using a Neural Network Algorithm Trained by Collocated ICESat-2 Measurements

By using diffusion theory and Monte Carlo lidar radiative transfer simulations, Hu 1 et al. (2022b) has derived snow depth from the first-, second- and third-order moments of the lidar backscattering pathlength distribution. Lu 2 et al. (2022,2024) calculated the snow depth by applying the methods to the satellite ICESat-2 lidar measurements over the Arctic sea ice, as well as land surfaces of Northern Hemisphere. In this paper, a neural network (NN) algorithm, employing several channels from AMSR-2 and the humidity vertical profiles GMAO GEOS-IT, is trained to determine snow depth identified by time and geolocation matched 2019 ICESat-2 snow-depth data during winter months over the Arctic sea ice. The trained NN snow-depth was applied to 2014-2020 AMSR-2 clear pixel data, although the algorithms perform reasonably well in thinner clouds. This paper used AMSR-2 data, a passive microwave instrument to generate a wide range of snow depth data, covering extensive spatial areas in the cross-orbit direction.

A Portable Nitrogen Dioxide Instrument Using Cavity-Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy

The Portable (2.7 kg) Cavity-enhanced Absorption of Nitrogen Dioxide (PCAND) instrument for measuring in situ nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was developed using incoherent, broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS). An LED light source centered at 408 nm was coupled to a cavity 15 cm in length, achieving an effective optical pathlength of ~520 m. Our precision was measured as 94 pptv (1 s). To date, we have flown this instrument on 3 balloon and 1 UAV test flights. This instrument records data to an SD card and outputs data (via an RS232 port) to external devices including a commercial radiosonde (iMet) for real-time data downlink.

Dim star fringe tracking demonstration on SIM's system testbed-3

The main testbed objective is to demonstrate nanometer class stability of fringes in the dim star, or science, interferometer while using path length & angle feed-forward control, and while the instrument is integrated atop a flight-like flexible structure. This document addresses completion of the Path Length Feed Forward milestone, which requires at least 40 dB of external delay rejection at some frequency between 0.1 and 1.0 Hz.

SIM System Testbed III

The System Testbed III (STB-3) is the flagship testbed in JPL's Interferometry Technology Program for the Space Interferometry Mission, in which it holds a place as the piece of ground hardware that looks and acts most like the real SIM space system.
