Eigenvalue Placement and Stabilization by Constrained Optimization

A pole placement algorithm is proposed which uses constrained nonlinear optimization techniques on a finite dimensional model of a linear n degree of freedom system. Low order feedback control is assumed where r poles may be assigned; r being the rank of the sensor coefficient matrix. It is shown that by combining feedback control theory methods with optimization techniques, one can ensure the stability characteristics of a system, and can alter its transient response.

Senstitivty analysis and optimization of nodal point placement for vibration reduction

A method is developed for sensitivity analysis and optimization of nodal point locations in connection with vibration reduction. A straightforward derivation of the expression for the derivative of nodal locations is given, and the role of the derivative in assessing design trends is demonstrated. An optimization process is developed which uses added lumped masses on the structure as design variables to move the node to a preselected location - for example, where low response amplitude is required or to a point which makes the mode shape nearly orthogonal to the force distribution, thereby minimizing the generalized force. The optimization formulation leads to values for added masses that adjust a nodal location while minimizing the total amount of added mass required to do so. As an example, the node of the second mode of a cantilever box beam is relocated to coincide with the centroid of a prescribed force distribution, thereby reducing the generalized force substantially without adding excessive mass. A comparison with an optimization formulation that directly minimizes the generalized force indicates that nodal placement gives essentially a minimum generalized force when the node is appropriately placed.

Optimization of payload mass placement in a dual keel space station

In order to keep a Space Station in a stable low-Earth orbit, angular momentum storage and translational attitude control systems will have to be used. In order to minimize the size of these attitude control systems, the induced gravity gradient torque effects will have to be minimized. This can be done by minimizing the cross-products of inertia of the Station through the management of payload placement with the Station geometry. A derived and automated methodology is presented which utilizes mathematical nonlinear programming techniques. An optimal arrangement of a set of five payloads on a Dual Keel Space Station was found that minimized the cross products of inertia and thus the required controllability resources.

A parallel simulated annealing algorithm for standard cell placement on a hypercube computer

A parallel version of a simulated annealing algorithm is presented which is targeted to run on a hypercube computer. A strategy for mapping the cells in a two dimensional area of a chip onto processors in an n-dimensional hypercube is proposed such that both small and large distance moves can be applied. Two types of moves are allowed: cell exchanges and cell displacements. The computation of the cost function in parallel among all the processors in the hypercube is described along with a distributed data structure that needs to be stored in the hypercube to support parallel cost evaluation. A novel tree broadcasting strategy is used extensively in the algorithm for updating cell locations in the parallel environment. Studies on the performance of the algorithm on example industrial circuits show that it is faster and gives better final placement results than the uniprocessor simulated annealing algorithms. An improved uniprocessor algorithm is proposed which is based on the improved results obtained from parallelization of the simulated annealing algorithm.

Optimal placement of excitations and sensors for verification of large dynamical systems

The computationally difficult problem of the optimal placement of excitations and sensors to maximize the observed measurements is studied within the framework of combinatorial optimization, and is solved numerically using a variation of the simulated annealing heuristic algorithm. Results of numerical experiments including a square plate and a 960 degrees-of-freedom Control of Flexible Structure (COFS) truss structure, are presented. Though the algorithm produces suboptimal solutions, its generality and simplicity allow the treatment of complex dynamical systems which would otherwise be difficult to handle.

Optimal placement of critical speeds in rotor-bearing systems

The design of a rotor-bearing system is an iterative process in which the parameters that influence the design are modified until the desired design objectives are achieved. Primary among the design objectives is the minimization of the response amplitude within the operating range of the rotor system. An automated design procedure for the optimal placement of the critical speeds of a rotor is presented. The desired design objective is cast as a nonlinear programming problem that minimizes an objective function subject to constraints. The optimization program interacts with an analysis program to search for the feasible optimal design.

An improved simulated annealing algorithm for standard cell placement

Simulated annealing is a general purpose Monte Carlo optimization technique that was applied to the problem of placing standard logic cells in a VLSI ship so that the total interconnection wire length is minimized. An improved standard cell placement algorithm that takes advantage of the performance enhancements that appear to come from parallelizing the uniprocessor simulated annealing algorithm is presented. An outline of this algorithm is given.

On the stability of adaptive pole-placement controllers with a saturating actuator

The question of how existing pole-placement algorithms work in the case of a saturating input is addressed. The stability of such algorithms and the modifications needed to make them work in the presence of saturation are examined. The net results of this examination are: a mathematical condition for closed-loop stability; physical intuition behind this condition; some explanation of why adaptive control has been successfully implemented, even while ignoring saturation; and some design rules for doing adaptive control on linear plants with saturating actuators.

Optimal placement of actuators and sensors in control augmented structural optimization

A control-augmented structural synthesis methodology is presented in which actuator and sensor placement is treated in terms of (0,1) variables. Structural member sizes and control variables are treated simultaneously as design variables. A multiobjective utopian approach is used to obtain a compromise solution for inherently conflicting objective functions such as strucutal mass control effort and number of actuators. Constraints are imposed on transient displacements, natural frequencies, actuator forces and dynamic stability as well as controllability and observability of the system. The combinatorial aspects of the mixed - (0,1) continuous variable design optimization problem are made tractable by combining approximation concepts with branch and bound techniques. Some numerical results for example problems are presented to illustrate the efficacy of the design procedure set forth.

Parallel simulated annealing algorithms for cell placement on hypercube multiprocessors

Two parallel algorithms for standard cell placement using simulated annealing are developed to run on distributed-memory message-passing hypercube multiprocessors. The cells can be mapped in a two-dimensional area of a chip onto processors in an n-dimensional hypercube in two ways, such that both small and large cell exchange and displacement moves can be applied. The computation of the cost function in parallel among all the processors in the hypercube is described, along with a distributed data structure that needs to be stored in the hypercube to support the parallel cost evaluation. A novel tree broadcasting strategy is used extensively for updating cell locations in the parallel environment. A dynamic parallel annealing schedule estimates the errors due to interacting parallel moves and adapts the rate of synchronization automatically. Two novel approaches in controlling error in parallel algorithms are described: heuristic cell coloring and adaptive sequence control.

Sensor placement for on-orbit modal testing

A systematic procedure of placing accelerometers for the on-orbit modal identification of large flexible space structures is addressed. Target modes for modal testing are selected by examining the modal cost of each mode. Assuming that a time-domain modal identification algorithm such as Eigensystem Realization Algorithm is employed to identify the modes from measured time response data, the sensors are placed to ensure the recovery of the target modes. As an application example of the procedure, an accelerometer placement study for the Space Station Freedom On-Orbit Modal Identification Experiment is presented.

Optimal actuator placement in adaptive precision trusses

Actuator placement in adaptive truss structures is to cater to two needs: displacement control of precision points and preloading the elements to overcome joint slackness. Due to technological and financial considerations, the number of actuators available is much less than the degrees of freedom of precision points to be controlled and the degree of redundancy of the structure. An approach for optimal actuator location is outlined. Test cases to demonstrate the effectiveness of the scheme are applied to the Precision Segmented Reflector Truss.
