Porting the Nonlinear Optimization Library HiOp to Accelerator-Based Hardware Architectures

While interior point method has been the centerpiece of nonlinear programming tools used in science and engineering, its reliance on linear solvers that can tackle sparse symmetric indefinite and highly ill-conditioned problems made it difficult to implement it effectively on hardware accelerators. HiOp optimization package attempts to provide an implementation of the interior point method suitable for hardware accelerators by compressing the original sparse problem to produce an underlying linear problem that is dense and of manageable size. Implementations of dense linear solvers are more mature and utilize hardware accelerators better than their sparse counterparts. There is a number of important domain problems, such as optimal power flow analysis for power grids, where the sparse problem can be effectively compressed and deploying dense linear solver within the interior point method can improve performance. Here we describe a portable implementation of HiOp optimization engine, which uses a linear solver from Magma library and runs entirely on hardware accelerators. To compress the problem, HiOp uses customized mixed dense-sparse linear algebra. All HiOp kernels are implemented using Umpire and RAJA portability libraries. We describe details of the implementation and discuss trade-offs between performance, portability and development cost.

A novel approach to RF power coupling in Radio-Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) structures: built-in coaxial double-loop coupling port

Efficient and reliable RF power couplers in accelerating cavities require precise impedance matching and mechanical stability to ensure optimal beam energy transfer. In radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerators, power is commonly delivered using waveguide iris or coaxial loop couplers. Iris couplers can handle high RF power but lack tunability, while coaxial loop couplers offer tuning flexibility but are limited in power handling and thermal performance. We propose a new RFQ power coupling concept utilizing a single input coaxial center-fed double-loop antenna built into a vane in an RFQ structure . The design integrates back-to-back loops into the RFQ vanes, fed by a TEM coaxial transmission line with standard 50-Ω characteristic impedance. The configuration can allow straightforward and easy ceramic window replacement without retuning, and coupling strength is adjusted with protruding tuning rods. Numerical simulations, performed with both a simplified RFQ model and the Spallation Neutron Source RFQ, demonstrate improved RF performance and reduced dipole mode excitation. The results establish the coaxial double-loop coupler as a practical alternative for high-power RFQ coupling applications.

Lessons Learned from the First Year of Property Remediation - 20475

The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal environmental clean-up program. Its mandate is the remediation and local, long-term, safe management of approximately 1.7 million cubic metres of historic low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) in the adjacent communities of Port Hope and Port Granby in Southern Ontario, Canada. The PHAI is being undertaken by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, a federal Crown corporation. It is currently one of the largest environmental remediation projects in Canada. The safety of workers, the public and the environment while delivering the PHAI compliantly, on time and within budget is CNL's number one priority. The PHAI is being carried out as two projects - the Port Hope Project and the Port Granby Project. The larger of the two PHAI scopes of work - the Port Hope Project - involves the cleanup of approximately 1.2 million cubic metres of historic LLRW from 18 major sites in Port Hope, the construction of an engineered aboveground mound where the waste will be safely contained and the long-term maintenance and monitoring of the facility. Construction of the waste water treatment plant, the first three of four cells in the mound and supporting infrastructure is complete, with construction of the fourth cell in progress. In 2017 with the movement of on-site waste at this facility began and is now complete. Waste excavation and transportation from off-site locations within the community began in 2018; the cleanup of four temporary storage sites is now complete and remediation at several other major sites is underway. The Port Hope Project also includes a survey of the interior and exterior investigation of approximately 4,800 properties, primarily residential, in the urban area of Port Hope for the presence or absence of historic LLRW. The current projection is that approximately 1,250 privately owned residential and commercial properties known as Small-Scale Sites (SSS) will be identified as having waste exceeding the PHAI clean-up criteria. This paper will outline some of the challenges and lessons learned from the first year of SSS remediation including contractual, data and design issues; interaction with and managing expectations of stakeholders; weather, site and structure conditions as well as municipal permitting, resourcing, transportation and remediation verification. Implications of End Points on Remediation - 20476

The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) is a federal environmental clean-up program. Its mandate is the remediation and local, long-term, safe management of approximately 1.7 million cubic metres of historic low-level radioactive waste in the adjacent communities of Port Hope and Port Granby in Southern Ontario, Canada. The PHAI is being undertaken by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, a federal Crown corporation. It is currently one of the largest environmental remediation projects in Canada. The safety of workers, the public and the environment while delivering the PHAI compliantly, on time and within budget is CNL's number one priority. The PHAI is being implemented as two projects - the Port Hope Project and the Port Granby Project. The Port Hope Project is the larger of the two and includes the cleanup of approximately 1.2 million cubic metres of historic waste. The Port Hope Project includes a unique and important component - the remediation of approximately 1,200 private residences and businesses to include both interior and exterior verification of soil and surface-contaminated objects. Planning and consultation for the PHAI clean-up criteria and remediation verification standard operating procedures (RVSOP) were initiated in the early 2000's. The criteria were developed through a cooperative effort involving the PHAI, scientific specialists, federal and provincial government agencies, peer reviewers, the municipalities and members of the public. Subsequent verification procedures which detail the unique systematic methods to verify compliance with the clean-up criteria were developed by CNL in consultation with federal regulators and relevant stakeholders. Now, specifically with the Port Hope Small-Scale Sites project having been underway for a year and approximately 38 properties in some stage of remediation, it has become increasingly evident that the practical application of the clean-up criteria and RVSOP methodology is posing unique challenges that are having direct impact on project execution. The current RVSOP approach is based on discrete sample verification not allowing failure of any one sample. When implemented in the field, particularly at the Small-Scale Sites, it leads to a much more extensive excavation than what was accounted for in the original design, the implications of which are substantial delays in project progress and much more significant impact on the individual properties than originally anticipated. This paper will examine the evolution of PHAI clean-up criteria, subsequent RVSOP methodology and its impact on current project execution and the justification for exploring potential revisions to methods of remediation verification. CENC PSN VOID FY20 Report

Maritime trade accounts for approximately 80 percent of international commerce. The high volume of vessels traversing domestic and international ports makes port areas prime targets for terrorism as well as illegal trafficking of drugs and arms (conventional or nuclear). Port security is therefore a worldwide concern affecting global economies, freedom of movement, and national security. However, extensive port monitoring is inherently complex and time consuming — making it truly viable only via an automated framework that can detect potential illicit activity and alert authorities in a timely manner. The development of image processing algorithms for this purpose requires access to large, labeled datasets that cover the breadth of targets of interest as well as the environments that they are observed within. Curated and labeled datasets of this nature are of enormous value to Sandia's Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation and National Security Program portfolios, as well as to Sandia's machine learning/automatic target recognition (ML/ATR) algorithm development and R&D communities. The goal of this project is to create a commercial satellite imagery dataset of labeled maritime vessels in port areas to support the development of ML/ATR algorithms for port security nonproliferation purposes. This dataset — Port Security Nonproliferation Vessel Overhead Imagery Dataset (PSN VOID) — has the potential to support a variety of other ancillary missions, such as maritime domain awareness, domestic and international security, drug interdiction, and weapons trafficking.

An Investigation into the Effects of Swirl on the Performance and Emissions of an Opposed-Piston Two-Stroke Engine using Large Eddy Simulations

Opposed-piston two-stroke (OP-2S) engines have the potential to achieve higher thermal efficiency than a conventional four-stroke diesel engine. However, the uniflow scavenging process is difficult to control over a wider range of speed and loads due to its sensitivity to pressure dynamics, port timings, and port design. Specifically, the angle of the intake ports can be used to generate swirl which has implications for open and closed cycle effects. This study proposes an analysis of the effects of port angle on the in-cylinder flow distribution and combustion performance of an OP-2S using computational fluid dynamics engine. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was used to model turbulence given its ability to predict in-cylinder mixing and cyclic variability. A three-cylinder model was validated to experimental data collected by Achates Power and the grid was verified using an LES quality approach from the literature. The model was used to simulate port angles from 12 to 29 degrees at constant pressure and temperature boundary conditions. Results indicated that the higher bulk swirl ratio generated by larger port angles tends to trap more internal residuals. This effect on the scavenging performance, combined with the larger trapped swirl ratio, also has a significant impact on the combustion performance in a two-stroke engine. It was concluded that there exists a tradeoff of efficiency and emissions that must be considered when increasing the port angle in a uniflow two-stroke engine. 1. Introduction Two-stroke engines were developed in the 1800s and are commonly used in practice today for lightweight power applications such as motorcycles or handheld power tools, as well as large-bore low speed engines for stationary power and marine applications. Two-stroke engines provide the distinct advantage of higher torque/power output but present challenges due to its coupled intake and exhaust process. Four-stroke engines have the benefit of using two full piston strokes to induct intake charge and to expel exhaust gases. Controlling the trapped charge composition in a twostroke engine via a scavenging process is crucial for reliable and efficient engine operation.
