This study examines the performance of U-Zr and U-Pd-Zr annular metallic fuel rodlets and details the current status of modeling efforts regarding U-Pu-Zr solid metallic fuel rodlets which were experimentally evaluated as part of the Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC). The AFC mission is to develop novel fuel technologies and facilitate the implementation of those technologies by industry partners. A key objective is to improve steady-state and transient performance over current fuel types. The experiments of interest in this study included metallic fuel rodlets within HT-9 cladding which were placed in SS-316 capsules and inserted in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Certain mechanical and thermal conditions cannot be directly evaluated through experiments and fuel performance modeling is used to shed light on this evolution over time. In this study, BISON Multiphysics simulations are leveraged to investigate the state of the fuel system throughout and after the experimental conditions.

Many actions are underway at global, national, and local levels to increase plastics circularity. However, studies evaluating the environmental and socio-economic impacts of such a transition are lacking at regional levels in the United States. In this work, the existing polyethylene terephthalate and polyolefin plastics supply chains in Michigan were compared to a potential future (‘NextCycle’) scenario that looks at increasing Michigan’s overall recycling rate to 45%. Material flow analysis data was combined with environmental and socio-economic metrics to evaluate the sustainability of these supply chains for the modeled scenarios. Overall, the NextCycle scenario for these supply chains achieved a net 14% and 34% savings of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy impacts, when compared with their respective baseline values. Additionally, the NextCycle scenario showed a net gain in employment and wages, however, it showed a net loss of revenue generation outside of Michigan due to the avoided use of virgin resins in Michigan.
Changes to soil hydraulic properties that reduce infiltration capacity following fire can increase flash flood risks. These risks are exacerbated by rainfall intensification associated with a warming climate. However, the potential effects of climate-change-driven rainfall intensification on postfire floods remain largely unexplored. Using rainfall and runoff observations from a 49.4 km 2 watershed in southern Arizona, USA, and a hydrologic model (KINEROS2), we examined the temporal evolution following a historic fire of three crucial hydrologic parameters: soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (K sp ), net capillary drive (G p ), and hydraulic roughness (n c ). We explored how the effect of fire on these parameters may influence peak flow under future climate scenarios derived from CMIP6, specifically the medium emissions scenario (SSP2-4.5) and high emissions scenario (SSP5-8.5). Results demonstrate an increase in K sp from 11 mm h −1 in the first postfire year to 60 mm h −1 in postfire year 3. G p similarly increased from 19 mm in the first postfire year to 30 mm in the third, while nc was relatively constant. The highest simulated Q p occurred in the first postfire year. Under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the likelihood of a 100-year flood is projected to be twice as large by the middle of the century relative to its historical magnitude. Simulations further indicate that the maximum expected discharge associated with a postfire flood, as derived from historical data, could be triggered by a 10-year rainstorm under the SSP5-8.5 scenario by the late century. Simulations also demonstrate that rainfall intensification will lead to greater persistence of elevated flood hazards following fire by the late century under both the SSP2-4.5 and the SSP5-8.5 scenarios.

Large Language Models (LLMs) struggle out of the box when answering factually about detailed questions, especially in domains that are sparsely represented in their training data. This causes hallucinations and reduces reliability making it difficult for them to be used in practice. This work shows that using RAG techniques can improve factual accuracy and reliability, allowing for the application of LLMs in specialized areas, even when those areas that aren’t extensively covered in their initial training.

The U.S. grid is rapidly transitioning towards utilizing inverter-based renewable energy resources such as solar, wind, and batteries, reducing the carbon emission footprint.Inverter-based microgrid control architectures remain a critical focus to address power system stability issues in future high penetration markets lacking spinning generation assets. Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is researching an active layered inverter based frequency-Watt control scheme that provides distribution level stability in high-penetration markets where grid inertia is lacking. Hardware in the loop case study was implemented using INL’s Microgrid Testbed to combat scalable frequency deviations ranging from 60 Hz down to 50 Hz initialized by a hydropower model implementing step loads using a 540-kW grid emulator. Our research findings demonstrate the importance of distribution level, inverter-based active frequency-Watt controls utilizing a battery energy storage system (BESS) to provide adequate frequency support at the point of common coupling without major power infrastructure upgrades.
TRISO fuel, or TRi-structural ISOtropic, is a ceramic based nuclear fuel capable of operating at high temperatures (up to 1600°C). The fuel, consisting of uranium oxycarbide (UCO) fuel kernels, is coated with three layers of carbon and ceramic (dense silicon carbide) materials to capture and contain radioactive fission products. BWXT, located in Lynchburg, VA, has perfected the manufacturing techniques to produce this fuel and is currently the only US company licensed to produce this irradiation-tested fuel. BWXT is currently producing fuel in support of a demonstration reactor scheduled for startup on the INL site in 2025. The first fuel delivery, estimated at 200 kilograms High Assay Low Enriched Uranium, is targeted for the end of CY2024.
