Improved thermodynamic modelling of the no-vent fill process and correlation with experimental data

The United States plans to establish a permanent manned presence in space and to explore the Solar System have created the need to efficiently handle large quantities of subcritical cryogenic fluids, particularly propellants such as liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, in low- to zero-gravity environments. One of the key technologies to be developed for fluid handling is the ability to transfer the cryogens between storage and spacecraft tanks. The no-vent fill method has been identified as one way to perform this transfer. In order to understand how to apply this method, a model of the no-vent fill process is being developed and correlated with experimental data. The verified models then can be used to design and analyze configurations for tankage and subcritical fluid depots. This paper discusses the development of an improved macroscopic thermodynamic model of the no-vent fill process and correlates the analytical results from the computer program implementation of the model with experimental results for two different test tanks at NASA Lewis Research Center.

Research and technology 1991 annual report

As the NASA Center responsible for assembly, checkout, servicing, launch, recovery, and operational support of Space Transportation System elements and payloads, NASA Kennedy is placing increasing emphasis on the center's research and technology program. In addition to strengthening those areas of engineering and operations technology that contribute to safer, more efficient, and more economical execution of the current mission, the technical tools are being developed which are needed to execute the center's mission relative to future programs. The Engineering Development Directorate encompasses most of the labs and other center resources that are key elements of research and technology program implementation and is responsible for implementation of the majority of the projects in this Kennedy Space Center 1991 annual report.

High performance polymers and polymer matrix composites for spacecraft structural applications

A program implemented by NASA Langley Research Center to develop and evaluate new polymers and polymer matrix composites for spacecraft structural applications is examined. Various polymeric films, moldings, and adhesives are evaluated for resistance to atomic oxygen and high energy electron and UV radiation. Thin films from the poly(arylene ether)s containing phenylphosphine oxide groups and the siloxane-epoxies exhibited minor weight loss compared to Kapton polyimide after exposure. Large doses (greater than 10 exp 9 rads) of electron radiation, simulating 30 yr of exposure in GEO, are found to alter the chemical structure of epoxies by both chain scission and cross-linking. The thermal cycling representative of both LEO and GEO environments can cause microcracking in composites which can in turn affect the dimensional stability and produce mechanical property reductions. The processing and fabrication issues associated with precision composite spacecraft components are also addressed.

Analyzing Impacts Of Meteoroids And Debris On Spacecraft

BUMPERII is modular computer program implementing numerical solution technique to calculate probability of no penetration (PNP) of spacecraft by orbiting artificial debris or impacts of meteoroids. Equation used to calculate PNP based on Poisson-distribution model applicable to similar analysis of smaller craft, but reflects more rigorous mathematical modeling of size, shape, orientation, and other characteristics of spacecraft that affect impacts, and necessary for PNP analysis of such larger structures as components of space station. Written in FORTRAN 77.

A modal analysis of lamellar diffraction gratings in conical mountings

A rigorous modal analysis of lamellar grating, i.e., gratings having rectangular grooves, in conical mountings is presented. It is an extension of the analysis of Botten et al. which considered non-conical mountings. A key step in the extension is a decomposition of the electromagnetic field in the grating region into two orthogonal components. A computer program implementing this extended modal analysis is capable of dealing with plane wave diffraction by dielectric and metallic gratings with deep grooves, at arbitrary angles of incidence, and having arbitrary incident polarizations. Some numerical examples are included.

An application protocol for CAD to CAD transfer of electronic information

The exchange of Computer Aided Design (CAD) information between dissimilar CAD systems is a problem. This is especially true for transferring electronics CAD information such as multi-chip module (MCM), hybrid microcircuit assembly (HMA), and printed circuit board (PCB) designs. Currently, there exists several neutral data formats for transferring electronics CAD information. These include IGES, EDIF, and DXF formats. All these formats have limitations for use in exchanging electronic data. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, the Navy's MicroCIM program implemented a project to transfer hybrid microcircuit design information between dissimilar CAD systems. The IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) format is used since it is well established within the CAD industry. The goal of the project is to have a complete transfer of microelectronic CAD information, using IGES, without any data loss. An Application Protocol (AP) is being developed to specify how hybrid microcircuit CAD information will be represented by IGES entity constructs. The AP defines which IGES data items are appropriate for describing HMA geometry, connectivity, and processing as well as HMA material characteristics.

Space biology initiative program definition review. Trade study 5: Modification of existing hardware (COTS) versus new hardware build cost analysis

The JSC Life Sciences Project Division has been directly supporting NASA Headquarters, Life Sciences Division, in the preparation of data from JSC and ARC to assist in defining the Space Biology Initiative (SBI). GE Government Services and Horizon Aerospace have provided contract support for the development and integration of review data, reports, presentations, and detailed supporting data. An SBI Definition (Non-Advocate) Review at NASA Headquarters, Code B, has been scheduled for the June-July 1989 time period. In a previous NASA Headquarters review, NASA determined that additional supporting data would be beneficial to determine the potential advantages in modifying commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware for some SBI hardware items. In order to meet the demands of program implementation planning with the definition review in late spring of 1989, the definition trade study analysis must be adjusted in scope and schedule to be complete for the SBI Definition (Non-Advocate) Review. The relative costs of modifying existing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware is compared to fabricating new hardware. An historical basis for new build versus modifying COTS to meet current NMI specifications for manned space flight hardware is surveyed and identified. Selected SBI hardware are identified as potential candidates for off-the-shelf modification and statistical estimates on the relative cost of modifying COTS versus new build are provided.

Nonsmooth trajectory optimization - An approach using continuous simulated annealing

An account is given of the properties of a continuous simulated annealing algorithm that can function as a global optimization tool for nonsmooth dynamic systems, as shown in the case of a trajectory-optimization program implementation. The approach is shown to successfully solve the problem of nonsmooth trajectory optimization for a high performance rigid-body aircraft. The results obtained demonstrate the superiority of the simulated annealing algorithm over widely used algorithms.

Comparison Of Models Of Metal-Matrix Composites

Report presents comparative review of four mathematical models of micromechanical behaviors of fiber/metal-matrix composite materials. Models differ in various details, all based on properties of fiber and matrix constituent materials, all involve square arrays of fibers continuous and parallel and all assume complete bonding between constituents. Computer programs implementing models used to predict properties and stress-vs.-strain behaviors of unidirectional- and cross-ply laminated composites made of boron fibers in aluminum matrices and silicon carbide fibers in titanium matrices. Stresses in fiber and matrix constituent materials also predicted.
