Oceanographic applications of color-enhanced satellite imageries.

Black and white infrared imageries obtained from satellites over the oceans were transformed into color presentations. Investigations in different regions (Persian Gulf, Arabian Coast, Somali Coast and the Northwest Coast of Australia) revealed that temperature gradients and temperature differences of two degrees Celsius can be displayed by the color process from the imageries. This data display can be used for a rapid analysis of information obtained with an APT station.

The simultaneous quantitation of ten amino acids in soil extracts by mass fragmentography

A specific and sensitive method for the identification and simultaneous quantitation by mass fragmentography of ten of the amino acids present in soil was developed. The technique uses a computer driven quadrupole mass spectrometer and a commercial preparation of deuterated amino acids is used as internal standards for purposes of quantitation. The results obtained are comparable with those from an amino acid analyzer. In the quadrupole mass spectrometer-computer system up to 25 pre-selected ions may be monitored sequentially. This allows a maximum of 12 different amino acids (one specific ion in each of the undeuterated and deuterated amino acid spectra) to be quantitated. The method is relatively rapid (analysis time of approximately one hour) and is capable of the quantitation of nanogram quantities of amino acids.

An integrated radiation physics computer code system.

An integrated computer code system for the semi-automatic and rapid analysis of experimental and analytic problems in gamma photon and fast neutron radiation physics is presented. Such problems as the design of optimum radiation shields and radioisotope power source configurations may be studied. The system codes allow for the unfolding of complex neutron and gamma photon experimental spectra. Monte Carlo and analytic techniques are used for the theoretical prediction of radiation transport. The system includes a multichannel pulse-height analyzer scintillation and semiconductor spectrometer coupled to an on-line digital computer with appropriate peripheral equipment. The system is geometry generalized as well as self-contained with respect to material nuclear cross sections and the determination of the spectrometer response functions. Input data may be either analytic or experimental.

The oculometer - A new approach to flight management research.

For the first time researchers have an operational, nonintrusive instrument for determining a pilot's eye-point-of-regard without encumbering the pilot or introducing other artifacts into the simulation of flight experience. The instrument (the oculometer developed for NASA by Honeywell, Inc.) produces data in a form appropriate for online monitoring and rapid analysis using state-of-the-art display and computer technology. The type and accuracy of data obtained and the potential use of the oculometer as a research and training tool will be discussed.

The massively parallel processor

Future sensor systems will utilize massively parallel computing systems for rapid analysis of two-dimensional data. The Goddard Space Flight Center has an ongoing program to develop these systems. A single-instruction multiple data computer known as the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) is being fabricated for NASA by the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation. This processor contains 16,384 processing elements arranged in a 128 x 128 array. The MPP will be capable of adding more than 6 billion 8-bit numbers per second. Multiplication of eight-bit numbers can occur at a rate of 2 billion per second. Delivery of the MPP to Goddard Space Flight Center is scheduled for 1983.

Processing MAGSAT data for comparison with geoid anomalies

A digital data library of MAGSAT data consisting of 1,615,636 measurements from the quiet data set, is geographically sorted, and allows rapid analysis and processing of all the quiet magnetic data about any selected location. Because this library of MAGSAT data is compatible with existing gravity and geoid data library processing and display system software, correlations between MAGSAT, surface gravity, GEOS-3 radar altimeter geoid and bathymetric data sets can be conveniently detected and analyzed. Polynomial trends from each half-orbit were removed as an effective way of estimating and removing ring current effects following estimation of the core field contribution. It was found that a third order polynomial is the lowest polynomial order that appears to provide the best consistency of residual anomalies between coincident orbits.

Initial dynamic load estimates during configuration design

This analysis includes the structural response to shock and vibration and evaluates the maximum deflections and material stresses and the potential for the occurrence of elastic instability, fatigue and fracture. The required computations are often performed by means of finite element analysis (FEA) computer programs in which the structure is simulated by a finite element model which may contain thousands of elements. The formulation of a finite element model can be time consuming, and substantial additional modeling effort may be necessary if the structure requires significant changes after initial analysis. Rapid methods for obtaining rough estimates of the structural response to shock and vibration are presented for the purpose of providing guidance during the initial mechanical design configuration stage.

A proven knowledge-based approach to prioritizing process information

Many space-related processes are highly complex systems subject to sudden, major transients. In any complex process control system, a critical aspect is rapid analysis of the changing process information. During a disturbance, this task can overwhelm humans as well as computers. Humans deal with this by applying heuristics in determining significant information. A simple, knowledge-based approach to prioritizing information is described. The approach models those heuristics that humans would use in similar circumstances. The approach described has received two patents and was implemented in the Alarm Filtering System (AFS) at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL). AFS was first developed for application in a nuclear reactor control room. It has since been used in chemical processing applications, where it has had a significant impact on control room environments. The approach uses knowledge-based heuristics to analyze data from process instrumentation and respond to that data according to knowledge encapsulated in objects and rules. While AFS cannot perform the complete diagnosis and control task, it has proven to be extremely effective at filtering and prioritizing information. AFS was used for over two years as a first level of analysis for human diagnosticians. Given the approach's proven track record in a wide variety of practical applications, it should be useful in both ground- and space-based systems.

The durability of graphite/epoxy laminate subjected to repeated low velocity impact

Low velocity impact has been considered as quasi-static loading, as the dynamic effects are decaying before the pressure reaches its maximum. However, when the impact energy is low enough as not to cause visible damage, the dynamic effect at the beginning of the impact may cause internal damage to the laminate. Laminates were loaded quasi-statically and by impact to the same bending strain and with the same indenter shape several times. The laminates that were subjected to the impact loading failed much more rapidly. Analysis of the problem shows that the stress waves created by the impact at the beginning of contact intensify the damage zone created by the preceding impact until the final failure occurs.

Engineering method for aero-propulsive characteristics at hypersonic Mach numbers

An engineering method has been developed for the rapid analysis of external aerodynamics and propulsive performance characteristics of airbreathing vehicles at hypersonic Mach numbers. This method, based on the theory of characteristics, has been developed to analyze fuselage-wing body combinations and body flaps with blunt or sharp leading/trailing edges. Arbitrary ratio of specific heat for the flowing medium can be specified in the program. Furthermore, the capability exists in the code to compute the inviscid inlet mass capture and momentum flux. The method is under development for computations of pressure distribution, and flow characteristics in the inlet, along with the effect of viscosity. Correlative studies have been performed for representative hypersonic configurations using the current method. The results of these correlations for various aerodynamics parameters are encouraging.

Translating an AI application from Lisp to Ada: A case study

A set of benchmarks was developed to test the performance of a newly designed computer executing both Lisp and Ada. Among these was AutoClassII -- a large Artificial Intelligence (AI) application written in Common Lisp. The extraction of a representative subset of this complex application was aided by a Lisp Code Analyzer (LCA). The LCA enabled rapid analysis of the code, putting it in a concise and functionally readable form. An equivalent benchmark was created in Ada through manual translation of the Lisp version. A comparison of the execution results of both programs across a variety of compiler-machine combinations indicate that line-by-line translation coupled with analysis of the initial code can produce relatively efficient and reusable target code.

Formal Methods of V&V of Partial Specifications: An Experience Report

This paper describes our work exploring the suitability of formal specification methods for independent verification and validation (IV&V) of software specifications for large, safety critical systems. An IV&V contractor often has to perform rapid analysis on incomplete specifications, with no control over how those specifications are represented. Lightweight formal methods show significant promise in this context, as they offer a way of uncovering major errors, without the burden of full proofs of correctness. We describe an experiment in the application of the method SCR. to testing for consistency properties of a partial model of requirements for Fault Detection Isolation and Recovery on the space station. We conclude that the insights gained from formalizing a specification is valuable, and it is the process of formalization, rather than the end product that is important. It was only necessary to build enough of the formal model to test the properties in which we were interested. Maintenance of fidelity between multiple representations of the same requirements (as they evolve) is still a problem, and deserves further study.

F/NAS/Pressure Temperature Retrieval Techniques

The purpose of this investigation is to study methods and ways for rapid inversion programs involving the correlated k-method, and to modify the existing programs so that the rapid analysis of data can be accomplished. Extensive modifications of the software programs were introduced. These modifications were imposed on the radiative transfer models and inversion methods and resulted in incorporating some important atmospheric processes not previously considered. The software also was improved to handle several toxic gases, gases that were observed in Saturn's atmosphere, and to retrieve pressure-temperature profiles from infrared solar absorption spectra.

F/NAS/ Pressure Temperature Retrieval Techniques

The purpose of this investigation is to study methods and ways for rapid inversion programs involving the correlated k-method, and to modify the existing programs so that the rapid analysis of data can be accomplished. The earth's atmosphere as well as those around the planets consist of gases which emit radiation in the infrared spectral region, providing wealth of information about chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere. The atmospheric molecular constituents absorb and radiate by vibrational and rotational transitions, and the observed spectra exhibit characteristic spectral features in the region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The observed absorption or thermal emission spectra may be obtained with space-borne high resolution infrared spectrometers the 50-1000 micrometers spectral region. A detailed analysis of the observed spectra leads to information about the atmospheric thermal structure, composition, and the physical and chemical processes. The analytic techniques involve the development of radiative transfer models for the calculation of the observed radiance and transmittances for realistic atmospheric conditions and observational geometries, and the development of inversion methods for retrieval of atmospheric parameters from the observations.
