Constraining neutrinophilic mediators at FASER ν , FLArE, and FASER ν 2

High energy collider neutrinos have been observed for the first time by the FASER ν experiment. The detected spectrum of collider neutrinos scattering off nucleons can be used to probe neutrinophilic mediators with GeV-scale masses. We find that constraints on the pseudoscalar (axial vector) neutrinophilic mediator are close to the scalar (vector) case since they have similar cross section in the neutrino massless limit. We perform an analysis on the measured muon spectra at FASER ν , and find that the bounds on the vector mediator from the current FASER ν data are comparable to the existing bounds at m Z ′ ≈ 0.2 GeV . We also study the sensitivities to a neutrinophilic mediator at future Forward Physics Facilities including FLArE and FASER ν 2 by using both the missing transverse momentum and the charge identification information. We find that FLArE and FASER ν 2 can impose stronger bounds on both the scalar and vector neutrinophilic mediators than the existing bounds. The constraints on the scalar mediator can reach 0.08 (0.1) for m ϕ ≲ 1 GeV with (without) muon charge identification at FASER ν 2 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

S-matrix bootstrap in 3+1 dimensions: regularization and dual convex problem

The S-matrix bootstrap maps out the space of S-matrices allowed by analyticity, crossing, unitarity, and other constraints. For the 2 → 2 scattering matrix S 2→2 such space is an infinite dimensional convex space whose boundary can be determined by maximizing linear functionals. On the boundary interesting theories can be found, many times at vertices of the space. Here we consider 3 + 1 dimensional theories and focus on the equivalent dual convex minimization problem that provides strict upper bounds for the regularized primal problem and has interesting practical and physical advantages over the primal problem. Its variables are dual partial waves k ℓ (s) that are free variables, namely they do not have to obey any crossing, unitarity or other constraints. Nevertheless they are directly related to the partial waves f ℓ (s), for which all crossing, unitarity and symmetry properties result from the minimization. Numerically, it requires only a few dual partial waves, much as one wants to possibly match experimental results. We consider the case of scalar fields which is related to pion physics.

Time scales for nonlinear processes in preheating after multifield inflation with nonminimal couplings

We have conducted extensive lattice simulations to study the postinflation dynamics of multifield models involving nonminimal couplings. In this work, we explore the parameter dependence of preheating in these models and describe the various time scales that control such nonlinear processes as energy transfer, rescattering, and the approach to radiation domination and thermalization. In the limit of large nonminimal couplings ($ξ_I$ ~ 100), we find that efficient transfer of energy from the inflaton condensate to radiative degrees of freedom, emergence of a radiation-dominated equation of state, and the onset of thermalization each consistently occur within $N_{\text{reh}} ≲ 3 e$-folds after the end of inflation, largely independent of the values of the other couplings in the models. The exception is the case of negative ellipticity, in which there is a misalignment between the dominant direction in field space along which the system evolves and the larger of the nonminimal couplings $ξ_I$. In those cases, the field-space-driven parametric resonance is effectively shut off. More generally, the competition between the scalar fields’ potential and the field-space manifold structure can yield interesting phenomena such as two-stage resonances. Across many regions of parameter space, we find efficient re-scattering between the distinct fields, leading to a partial memory loss of the shape of the initial fluctuation spectrum. Despite the explosive particle production, which can lead to a quick depletion of the background energy density, the nonlinear processes do not induce any superhorizon correlations after the end of inflation in these models, which keeps predictions for cosmic microwave background observables unaffected by the late-time amplification of isocurvature fluctuations. Hence the excellent agreement between primordial observables and recent observations is preserved for this class of models, even when we consider postinflation dynamics.

Insights from binary pulsars and laboratories into baryon number violation: Implications for GeV dark matter

Rare processes in laboratory and within astrophysical environments can be highly sensitive probes of baryon-number-violating interactions at the TeV scale. We demonstrate the power of neutron stars to constrain baryon-number violation by considering a minimal extension of the standard model involving a TeV-mass scalar mediator and a GeV scale Majorana fermion ψ . We find that a Δ B = 2 mass-loss process in binary pulsar systems via n → γ ψ and the subsequent scattering ψ n → π − K + places stringent constraints on the model parameter space. These limits will become much stronger, due to the possibility of Λ → γ ψ decays at the tree level, if the neutron star equation of state is hyperonic. We compare these constraints with ongoing and future collider experiments, n − n ¯ oscillations, and dinucleon decay searches at future large-scale neutrino experiments, finding that the binary pulsars bounds on couplings are significantly tighter for specific flavor combinations. Higgs Portal Vector Dark Matter Interpretation: Review of Effective Field Theory Approach and Ultraviolet Complete Models

In this report a review of the Higgs portal-vector dark matter interpretation of the spin-independent dark matter nu-cleon elastic scattering cross section is presented, where the invisible Higgs decay width measured at the LHC is used. Effective Field Theory and ultraviolet complete models are discussed. LHC interpretations show only the scalar and Majorana dark matter scenarios; we propose including interpretation for vec-tor dark matter in the EFT and UV completion theoretical framework. In addition, our studies suggest an extension of the LHC dark matter interpretations to the sub-GeV regime.

Correlators of four light-ray operators in CCFT

Building on results in arXiv:2203.04255, we compute the correlator of four gluon light-ray operators in celestial CFT. We find that it is described by Fox H-functions and generalized I-functions of multiple variables. We also analyze light-ray correlators for a scalar amplitude involving the exchange of a massive scalar.

Constraints on a massive double-copy and applications to massive gravity

We propose and study a BCJ double-copy of massive particles, showing that it is equivalent to a KLT formula with a kernel given by the inverse of a matrix of massive bi-adjoint scalar amplitudes. For models with a uniform non-zero mass spectrum we demonstrate that the resulting double-copy factors on physical poles and that up to at least 5-particle scattering, color-kinematics duality satisfying numerators always exist. For the scattering of 5 or more particles, the procedure generically introduces spurious singularities that must be cancelled by imposing additional constraints. When massive particles are present, color-kinematics duality is not enough to guarantee a physical double-copy. As an example, we apply the formalism to massive Yang-Mills and show that up to 4-particle scattering the double-copy construction generates physical amplitudes of a model of dRGT massive gravity coupled to a dilaton and a two-form with dilaton parity violating couplings. We show that the spurious singularities in the 5-particle double-copy do not cancel in this example, and the construction fails to generate physically sensible amplitudes. We conjecture sufficient constraints on the mass spectrum, which in addition to massive BCJ relations, guarantee the absence of spurious singularities.

Search for dark matter produced in association with a leptonically decaying Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with a Z boson candidate and large missing transverse momentum. The analysis is based on proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13$\,\text {Te}\text {V}$, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The search uses the decay channels ${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{e}} {\mathrm{e}} $ and ${\mathrm{Z}} \rightarrow {{\upmu }{}{}} {{\upmu }{}{}} $. No significant excess of events is observed over the background expected from the standard model. Limits are set on dark matter particle production in the context of simplified models with vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar mediators, as well as on a two-Higgs-doublet model with an additional pseudoscalar mediator. In addition, limits are provided for spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross sections and are compared to those from direct-detection experiments. The results are also interpreted in the context of models of invisible Higgs boson decays, unparticles, and large extra dimensions.

Testbed Results for Scalar and Vector Radiative Transfer Computations of Light in Atmosphere-Ocean Systems

We generate and tabulate reflectance values of the Stokes parameters I, Q, and U of upwelling radiance just above a rough ocean surface and at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) for 100 scattering geometries, four atmosphere-ocean systems, and four wavelengths. The atmosphere-ocean systems increase in complexity from (a) a molecular atmosphere above a rough ocean surface (AOS-I model); to (b) a pure water body below a rough ocean surface (AOS-II model); to (c) a fully-coupled simple atmosphere-ocean system (AOS-III model) containing a molecular atmosphere, rough ocean surface, and pure water; to (d) a fully-coupled complex atmosphere-ocean system (AOS-IV model) that includes scattering by molecules, rough ocean surface, pure water, and hydrosols. Our wavelengths (350, 450, 550, and 650 nm) capture the ultraviolet-visible range. Our tables provide radiative transfer (RT) testbed results for atmosphere-ocean systems with an accuracy that surpasses the measurement accuracy of state-of-the-art polarimeters. To validate the accuracy of these tables we performed computations using three independent RT codes that provide deterministic numerical solutions for the RT equation. The agreement is 10(exp –5) for AOS-IV model, and 10(exp –6) for the other models. The degree of linear polarization computed by these RT codes differs by ≤0.2% for 15 isolated cases of tabulated reflectance values, and by ≤0.1% for all remaining cases. We also provide comparisons with results obtained by a stochastic RT code for AOS-I model. The agreement between the deterministic and stochastic results for this model is 10(exp –5) at TOA, and 10(exp –6) above the ocean surface.

Multi-spin soft bootstrap and scalar-vector Galileon

We use the amplitude soft bootstrap method to explore the space of effective field theories (EFT) of massless vectors and scalars. It is known that demanding vanishing soft limits fixes uniquely a special class of EFTs: non-linear sigma model, scalar Galileon and Born-Infeld theories. Based on the amplitudes analysis, we conjecture no-go theorems for higher-derivative vector theories and theories with coupled vectors and scalars. We then allow for more general soft theorems where the non-trivial part of the soft limit of the ( n +1)-pt amplitude is equal to a linear combination of n-pt amplitudes. We derive the form of these soft theorems for general power-counting and spins of particles and use it as an input into the soft bootstrap method in the case of Galileon power-counting and coupled scalar-vector theories. We show that this unifies the description of existing Galileon theories and leads us to the discovery of a new exceptional theory: Special scalar-vector Galileon.

From Navier-Stokes to Maxwell via Einstein

We revisit the cutoff surface formulation of fluid-gravity duality in the context of the classical double copy. The spacetimes in this fluid-gravity duality are algebraically special, with Petrov type II when the spacetime is four dimensional. We find two special classes of fluids whose dual spacetimes exhibit higher algebraic speciality: constant vorticity flows have type D gravity duals, while potential flows map to type N spacetimes. Using the Weyl version of the classical double copy, we construct associated single-copy gauge fields for both cases, finding that constant vorticity fluids map to a solenoid gauge field. Additionally we find the scalar in a potential flow fluid maps to the zeroth copy scalar.

Simultaneous Raman-Rayleigh-LIF Measurements and Numerical Modeling Results of a Lifted H2/N2 Turbulent Jet Flame in a Vitiated Coflow

An experimental and numerical investigation is presented of a H2/N2 turbulent jet flame burner that has a novel vitiated coflow. The vitiated coflow emulates the recirculation region of most combustors, such as gas turbines or furnaces. Additionally, since the vitiated gases are coflowing, the burner allows for exploration of recirculation chemistry without the corresponding fluid mechanics of recirculation. Thus the vitiated coflow burner design facilitates the development of chemical kinetic combustion models without the added complexity of recirculation fluid mechanics. Scalar measurements are reported for a turbulent jet flame of H2/N2 in a coflow of combustion products from a lean ((empty set) = 0.25) H2/Air flame. The combination of laser-induced fluorescence, Rayleigh scattering, and Raman scattering is used to obtain simultaneous measurements of the temperature, major species, as well as OH and NO. Laminar flame calculation with equal diffusivity do agree when the premixing and preheating that occurs prior to flame stabilization is accounted for in the boundary conditions. Also presented is an exploratory pdf model that predicts the flame's axial profiles fairly well, but does not accurately predict the lift-off height.

Freeze-in from preheating

We consider the production of dark matter during the process of reheating after inflation. The relic density of dark matter from freeze-in depends on both the energy density and energy distribution of the inflaton scattering or decay products composing the radiation bath. Here, we compare the perturbative and non-perturbative calculations of the energy density in radiation. We also consider the (likely) possibility that the final state scalar products are unstable. Assuming either thermal or non-thermal energy distribution functions, we compare the resulting relic density based on these different approaches. We show that the present-day cold dark matter density can be obtained through freeze-in from preheating for a large range of dark matter masses.

Thermalization and annihilation of dark matter in neutron stars

The capture of dark matter, and its subsequent annihilation, can heat old, isolated neutron stars. In order for kinetic heating to be achieved, the captured dark matter must undergo sufficient scattering to deposit its kinetic energy in the star. We find that this energy deposit typically occurs quickly, for most of the relevant parameter space. In order for appreciable annihilation heating to also be achieved, the dark matter must reach a state of capture-annihilation equilibrium in the star. We show that this can be fulfilled for all types of dark matter - baryon interactions. This includes cases where the scattering or annihilation cross sections are momentum or velocity suppressed in the non-relativistic limit. Importantly, we find that capture-annihilation equilibrium, and hence maximal annihilation heating, can be achieved without complete thermalization of the captured dark matter. For scattering cross sections that saturate the capture rate, we find that capture-annihilation equilibrium is typically reached on a timescale of less than 1 year for vector interactions and 10 4 years for scalar interactions.

Correlation between complex spin textures and the magnetocaloric and Hall effects in Eu⁢(Ga 1−𝑥 ⁢Al 𝑥 ) 4 (𝑥=0.9, 1)

Determining the electronic phase diagram of a quantum material as a function of temperature (𝑇) and applied magnetic field (𝐻) forms the basis for understanding the microscopic origin of transport properties, such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and topological Hall effect (THE). For many magnetic quantum materials, including Eu⁢Al 4 , a THE arises from a topologically protected magnetic skyrmion lattice with a nonzero scalar spin chirality. We identified a square skyrmion lattice (sSkL) peak in Eu⁢(Ga 1−𝑥 ⁢Al 𝑥 ) 4 (𝑥=0.9) identical to the peak previously observed in Eu⁢Al 4 by performing neutron-scattering measurements throughout the phase diagram. Here, comparing these neutron results with transport measurements, we found that in both compounds the maximal THE does not correspond to the sSkL area. Instead of the maximal THE, the maximal magnetocaloric-effect boundaries better identify the sSkL lattice phase observed by neutron-scattering measurements. The maximal THE therefore arises from interactions of itinerant electrons with frustrated spin fluctuations in a topologically trivial magnetic state.

Soft scalars in effective field theory

We derive a soft theorem for a massless scalar in an effective field theory with generic field content using the geometry of field space. This result extends the geometric soft theorem for scalar effective field theories by allowing the massless scalar to couple to other scalars, fermions, and gauge bosons. The soft theorem keeps its geometric form, but where the field-space geometry now involves the full field content of the theory. As a bonus, we also present novel double soft theorems with fermions, which mimic the geometric structure of the double soft theorem for scalars.

The role of vectors in reheating

We explore various aspects concerning the role of vector bosons during the reheating process. Generally, reheating occurs during the period of oscillations of the inflaton condensate and the evolution of the radiation bath depends on the inflaton equation of state. For oscillations about a quadratic minimum, the equation of state parameter, w = p/ρ = 0, and the evolution of the temperature, T(a) with respect to the scale factor is independent of the spin of the inflaton decay products. However, for cases when w > 0, there is a dependence on the spin, and here we consider the evolution when the inflaton decays or scatters to vector bosons. We also investigate the gravitational production of vector bosons as potential dark matter candidates. Gravitational production predominantly occurs through the longitudinal mode. We compare these results to the gravitational production of scalars.
