SHIVER - Spectroscopy HIstogram Visualizer for Event Reduction

Visualizing data from neutron scattering experiments is the first step in understanding the physics. The program is intended to generate and plot cuts and slices, through the four dimensional single crystal inelastic datasets, measured on direct geometry neutron spectrometers at the Spallation Neutron Source (ARCS, CNCS, HYSPEC, SEQUOIA).

Manipulation of the orbital angular momentum of soft X-ray beams by consecutive diffractive optics

Production and manipulation of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of coherent soft X-ray beams is demonstrated utilizing consecutive diffractive optics. OAM addition is observed upon passing the beam through consecutive fork gratings. Here, the OAM of the beam was found to be decoupled from its spin angular momentum (SAM). Practical implementation of angular momentum control by consecutive devices in the X-ray regime opens new experimental opportunities, such as direct measurement of the beam’s OAM without resorting to phase-sensitive techniques, including holography. OAM analyzers utilizing fork gratings can be used to characterize the beams produced by synchrotron and free electron lasers sources; they can also be used in scattering experiments.

Sunny.jl: A Julia Package for Spin Dynamics

Sunny is a Julia package designed to serve the needs of the quantum magnetism community. It supports the specification of a very broad class of spin models and a diverse suite of numerical solvers. These include powerful methods for simulating spin dynamics both in and out of equilibrium. Uniquely, it features a broad generalization of classical and semiclassical approaches to SU(N) coherent states, which is useful for studying systems exhibiting strong spin-orbit coupling or local entanglement effects. Sunny also offers a well-developed framework for calculating the dynamical spin structure factor, enabling direct comparison with scattering experiments. Ease of use is a priority, with tools for symmetry-guided modeling and interactive visualization.

Kernel polynomial method for linear spin wave theory

Calculating dynamical spin correlations is essential for matching model magnetic exchange Hamiltonians to momentum-resolved spectroscopic measurements. A major numerical bottleneck is the diagonalization of the dynamical matrix, especially in systems with large magnetic unit cells, such as those with incommensurate magnetic structures or quenched disorder. In this paper, we demonstrate an efficient scheme based on the kernel polynomial method for calculating dynamical correlations of relevance to inelastic neutron scattering experiments. This method reduces the scaling of numerical cost from cubic to linear in the magnetic unit cell size.

Multi-Differential Semi-Inclusive Charged-Current Muon Neutrino Cross Sections on Helium-4 in MINERvA and the Helium-to-CH Target Cross Section Ratio

A comprehensive international effort has been underway to elucidate the properties and behaviors of neutrinos. A major source of systematic uncertainties in studying neutrino-induced interactions comes from neutrino-nucleus cross-section models, highlighting the need for more precise statistical measurements. MINERvA, an on-axis neutrino-nucleus scattering experiment located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, was established to produce neutrino cross-section measurements with many different nuclei. The helium target is the lightest nucleus to be measured by MINERvA. Using the NuMI medium energy muon neutrino data set, we present preliminary results and summarize the extraction of the charged current (CC) muon neutrino - helium-4 semi-inclusive ($\nu_{\mu}$+$^{4}\textrm{He}$$\rightarrow$$\mu^{-}$+N$\pi$+M$\textit{p}$) multi-differential cross-section extraction as a function of transverse ($P_{T}$) and longitudinal ($P_{L}$) muon momentum with respect to the neutrino beamline. We define the final state topology as CC-N$\pi$M$\textit{p}$, with at least two reconstructed tracks: a muon and a combination of N protons and M pions, where $N + M > 0$. To probe the dependence on the size of the nucleus in neutrino-induced interaction phenomena we present a differential cross-section ratio of helium-4 to MINERvA's hydrocarbon target (\textrm{CH}) as a function of transverse muon momentum.

The Future Polarized Target Program at Jefferson Lab

Polarized targets have played a crucial role in Jefferson Lab's exploration of nuclear structure over the past four decades. The three original experimental halls have seen 19 separate installations of polarized solid or gas targets for use in the particle physics scattering experiments, and this trend will continue in the next decade. Five polarized target systems are in preparation for use at JLab in the coming years. Hall B will see the use of two solid polarized targets, one longitudinally polarized to the beam, the other transversely, as well as a novel 3He gas polarized target. In Hall C, new experiments will augment the tensor polarization in dynamically polarized solids. Plans are under development to bring a polarized solid target to Jefferson Lab's photon beam hall, Hall D, for the first time. To support these efforts, the JLab polarized target group is building a test laboratory to develop dynamic nuclear polarization techniques, as well as an apparatus to irradiate target material using electrons from JLab's injector test facility. In this talk, we will explore the development progress and plans for each of these efforts.

A Solid Polarized Target Development Facility at Jefferson Lab

Solid polarized targets are a crucial tool used in scattering experiments to investigate different properties of the nucleon. The equipment used to produce, measure, and maintain conditions for the polarized material is complex in comparison to nonpolarized targets. This, in combination with the frequency of polarized experiments run at Jefferson Lab, limits the opportunity to refine and build upon experience gained from previously constructed targets. To address this, the Jefferson Lab Target Group has begun the construction of a permanent facility dedicated to creating and testing material for Dynamic Nuclear Polarization. The design elements and manufacture of the test cryostat along with the incorporation of other DNP associated equipment will be presented.

Dirac Magnon in Honeycomb Lattice Magnet NiTiO 3

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single-crystal samples of the honeycomb lattice magnet, ilmenite NiTiO 3 . Below the Néel temperature of 22 K, spin wave excitations with a band energy of 3.7 meV were observed. Further, the neutron energy spectra were well-reproduced by modeling the system as a ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling, using linear spin wave theory. Similar to another ilmenite CoTiO 3 , a crossing structure was observed at the K point, suggesting the presence of Dirac magnons in NiTiO 3 . Further calculations suggested the formation of Dirac nodal line.

Neutron Spectroscopy Study on Crystalline Electric Field Excitations in NdB 4

Herein, the f-electron states of NdB 4 were determined by observing crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The resulting CEF excitation energies were 2.8, 12.4, 17.2, and 25.4 meV. The f-electron states were simply described by one of the J-multiplets |±J z $\rangle$ with negligibly small mixing. The ground state was the pseudoquartet comprising the ground doublet dominated by |±$\frac{5}{2}$$\rangle$ and the first excited doublet dominated by |±$\frac{7}{2}$$\rangle$ at 2.8 meV, consistent with magnetic specific heat and entropy reported in a previous study. In conclusion, the simple f-electron states in NdB 4 were the consequence of the strong uniaxial and in-plane isotropic CEF potential due to the local structure of Nd 3+ with point symmetry C 2v .

Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fe-substituted Bi-2201 Cuprate in the Heavily Overdoped Regime

Elastic neutron scattering experiments showed incommensurate antiferromagnetic peaks in 5% Fe-substituted Bi-2201 cuprate in the non-superconducting heavily overdoped regime. Here, the incommensurability δ ∼ 0.21 is comparable to that observed in Fe-substituted Bi-2201 in the overdoped regime. [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010).] The magnetic correlation length is comparable between the overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes. It is plausible that incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is induced and stabilized by Fe in the heavily overdoped regime, which suggests a robust antiferromagnetic correlation beyond the superconducting dome in the phase diagram.

Review of the inverse scattering problem at fixed energy in quantum mechanics

Methods of solution of the inverse scattering problem at fixed energy in quantum mechanics are presented. Scattering experiments of a beam of particles at a nonrelativisitic energy by a target made up of particles are analyzed. The Schroedinger equation is used to develop the quantum mechanical description of the system and one of several functions depending on the relative distance of the particles. The inverse problem is the construction of the potentials from experimental measurements.
