Properties of the Brewster angle and internal reflection in a dielectric prism are proposed as the basis of a new type of element for use in oversize waveguide in quasi-optical microwave components. Waveguide loss is reduced and precision broadband attenuators, phase shifters, and directional couplers can be constructed on the basis of the properties.

A number of computer programs are presented for use in the synthesis of microwave components in microstrip geometries. The programs compute the electrical and dimensional parameters required to synthesize couplers, filters, circulators, transformers, power splitters, diode switches, multipliers, diode attenuators and phase shifters. Additional programs are included to analyze and optimize cascaded transmission lines and lumped element networks, to analyze and synthesize Chebyshev and Butterworth filter prototypes, and to compute mixer intermodulation products. The programs are written in FORTRAN and the emphasis of the study is placed on the use of these programs and not on the theoretical aspects of the structures.
A general analysis of dynamic systems consisting of connected rigid bodies is presented. The number of bodies and their manner of connection is arbitrary so long as no closed loops are formed. The analysis represents a dynamic finite element method, which is computer-oriented and designed so that nonworking, interval constraint forces are automatically eliminated. The method is based upon Lagrange's form of d'Alembert's principle. Shifter matrix transformations are used with the geometrical aspects of the analysis. The method is illustrated with a space manipulator.
Quadrature is separated from amplified signal by use of phase detector, with phase shifter providing appropriate reference. Output of phase detector is further amplified and filtered by dc amplifier. Output of dc amplifier provides signal to neutralize quadrature component of transducer signal.
Null seeking system uses two transponders located at selected points on dish to detect phase-front of received signal. One signal line has continuously variable phase shifter driven by reversible stepmotor. Each of two transponders on dish is a dipole with mixer crystal between elements. Crystal is driven, in turn, by 181.6MHz signal carried by miniature coaxial cable.
The initial design and fabrication efforts for a radar attitude sensing system (RASS) are covered. The design and fabrication of the RASS system is being undertaken in two phases, 1B1 and 1B2. The RASS system as configured under phase 1B1 contains the solid state transmitter and local oscillator, the antenna system, the receiving system, and the altitude electronics. RASS employs a pseudo-random coded cw signal and receiver correlation techniques to measure range. The antenna is a planar, phased array, monopulse type, whose beam is electronically steerable using diode phase shifters. The beam steering computer and attitude sensing circuitry are to be included in Phase 1B2 of the program.
Various applications of an antiresonant ring, consisting of a beam splitter and a number of optical reflectors, are described. With a beam splitter having a transmission coefficient and a reflection coefficient, an optical beam incident on the beam splitter along a first axis is split into two components which circulate around the ring in opposite directions. They are recombined to reflect back the beam along the first axis, with none of the beam power being directed along a second axis. The ring can be part of the cavity of two otherwise independent lasers, with two separate laser mediums external to the ring, or with a multi-wavelength laser medium in the ring. The ring together with a second-harmonic generation crystal and a dispersive phase shifter in the ring can generate the second harmonic of an optical beam.
In detector, phase shifter is used to generate negative phase shift opposing detected phase angle. This produces converted series sideband and component carrier, with residual carrier signal and converted series sideband and component carrier added together to produce tracking signal.
The potential uses and techniques for the shuttle spacelab Millimeter Wave Large Aperture Antenna Experiment (MWLAE) are documented. Potential uses are identified: applications to radio astronomy, the sensing of atmospheric turbulence by its effect on water vapor line emissions, and the monitoring of oil spills by multifrequency radiometry. IF combining is preferable to RF combining with respect to signal to noise ratio for communications receiving antennas of the size proposed for MWLAE. A design approach using arrays of subapertures is proposed to reduce the number of phase shifters and mixers for uses which require a filled aperture. Correlation radiometry and a scheme utilizing synchronous Dicke switches and IF combining are proposed as potential solutions.
A coaxial cylinder configuration is used to investigate the effect of corona impulses on the deterioration of electrical insulation. The corona currents flowing through the resistance develop a voltage which is fed to the measuring set-up. The value of this resistance is made equal to the surge impedance of the coaxial cylinder set up to prevent reflections. This instrumentation includes a phase shifter and Schmidt trigger and is designed to sample, measure, and display corona impulses occurring during any predetermined sampling period of a randomly selectable half cycle of the 60 Hz high voltage wave.
