Scintillation light detection in polycrystalline diamond using single photon detectors

Here, this study investigates the scintillation properties of polycrystalline diamond for particle detection applications, particularly in neutron and alpha radiation environments. Polycrystalline diamonds provide a cost-effective alternative to monocrystalline diamonds while retaining essential detection properties. Photoluminescence measurements were performed to analyze emission spectra, revealing distinct characteristics based on impurity content and crystallinity. Scintillation responses were assessed using Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs), demonstrating the capability of polycrystalline diamond powders to respond to alpha irradiation, albeit with reduced resolution compared to traditional scintillators. A prototype neutron detector was developed by combining diamond powder with neutron-sensitive 6 LiF, and its performance was evaluated through experimental testing and Geant4 simulations. The findings indicate that polycrystalline diamond-based detectors can achieve significant detection efficiency while remaining insensitive to gamma radiation, offering potential for portable neutron detection applications.

Enhanced search for neutral current Δ radiative single-photon production in MicroBooNE

We report results from an updated search for neutral current (NC) resonant Δ⁡(1232) baryon production and subsequent Δ radiative decay (NC Δ → 𝑁⁢𝛾). We consider events with and without final state protons; events with a proton can be compared with the kinematics of a Δ⁡(1232) baryon decay, while events without a visible proton represent a more generic phase space. In order to maximize sensitivity to each topology, we simultaneously make use of two different reconstruction paradigms, Pandora and Wire-Cell, which have complementary strengths, and select mostly orthogonal sets of events. Considering an overall scaling of the NC Δ → 𝑁⁢𝛾 rate as an explanation of the MiniBooNE anomaly, our data exclude this hypothesis at 94.4% CL. When we decouple the expected correlations between NC Δ → 𝑁⁢𝛾 events with and without final state protons, our data exclude an interpretation in which all excess events have associated protons at 2.0⁢𝜎, and are consistent with an interpretation in which all excess events have no associated protons at 0.63⁢𝜎.

A single-photon polarization-frequency controlled-NOT gate

We develop a high-fidelity controlled-NOT gate between photonic polarization and frequency, leveraging direction-dependent electro-optic phase modulation in a fiber Sagnac loop. This design could facilitate massively parallelizable entanglement distillation with polarization-frequency resources in lightwave networks.

Qubit Based Single-Photon Sensors for Dark Matter Searches

This experimental program will adapt low-noise qubit readout techniques for use in particle physics experiments. As an end goal, this research will deliver a technical demonstration of low-noise quantum sensors, as well as the results of a proof-of-principle axion search in a narrow but previously unexamined mass range. This program would form the basis for a technical design report outlining a next-generation axion dark matter search.
