Fast Quasi-Static Time-Series Simulation for Accurate PV Inverter Semiconductor Fatigue Analysis with a Long-Term Solar Profile

Power system simulations with long-term data typically have large time steps varying from one second to a few minutes. However, for PV inverter semiconductors, the minimum thermal stress cycle occurs over the fundamental grid frequency (50 or 60 Hz). This requires the time step of the fatigue simulation to be around 100 µs. This small time step requires long computation times to process yearly power production profiles. This paper proposes a fast fatigue simulation for inverter semiconductors using the quasi-static time series (QSTS) simulation concept. The proposed simulation calculates the steady state of the semiconductor junction temperature by using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The small thermal cycling during a switching period and even over the fundamental waveform is disregarded to further accelerate the simulation speed. The resulting time step of the fatigue simulation is 15 minutes, which is consistent with the solar dataset. The error of the proposed simulation is 0.16% compared to the fatigue simulation results using the complete thermal stress profile. A PV inverter that responds to a Transactive Energy System (TES) is simulated to demonstrate the use of the proposed fatigue simulation. The proposed simulation has the potential to co-simulate with system level simulation tools that also adopt the QSTS concept.

WaterTAP-REFLO models of Solar Still, Solar Still ZLD, Enhanced Evaporation pond results for baseline analysis

This folder contains results from models that were adapted into WaterTAP-REFLO. The files contain inputs and outputs for solar still, solar still ZLD, and enhanced evaporation pond unit process models for 4 different locations in the USA: Phoenix, Miami, Houston, and Baltimore. The WaterTAP-REFLO implementation may be different and thus may have different results. The data structure and content are described in a ReadMe.txt file. For WaterTAP-REFLO documentation and/or contact the developers please see: https://github.com/watertap-org/watertap-reflo.

Dispatch optimization of a concentrating solar power system under uncertain solar irradiance and energy prices

The integration of thermal energy storage into a concentrating solar power system allows for mitigating some of the risk associated with uncertain solar irradiance and uncertain energy prices. We solve a 48 h dispatch optimization model with continually updated conditional point forecasts of both direct normal irradiance (DNI) and electricity prices with a rolling-horizon scheme at hourly resolution over the course of a year. Joint, conditional forecasts for DNI and prices are formed using an autoregressive moving-average time series model with exogenous weather predictors. We guide dispatch using a mixed-integer programming model, but in order to evaluate performance we use the System Advisor Model (SAM) of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. SAM is a techno-economic simulation model that accounts for plant thermodynamics with higher fidelity. Our conditional DNI forecasts improve annual revenue by 4%–12% over using historical forecasts based on data from previous years. Conditional price forecasts improve annual revenue by 6%–19% in the real-time market over analogous historical forecasts. Updating these forecasts every six hours, rather than every 24 h, further improves annual revenue by 5%–6%. Here, we also investigate a method that values terminal inventory in our dispatch optimization model, again when used in a rolling-horizon scheme.

Pairing Directional Solar Inputs From Ray Tracing to Solar Receiver/Reactor Heat Transfer Models on Unstructured Meshes: Development and Case Studies

A novel method for pairing surface irradiation and volumetric absorption from Monte Carlo ray tracing to computational heat transfer models is presented. The method is well-suited to directionally and spatially complex concentrated radiative inputs (e.g., solar receivers and reactors). The method employs a generalized algorithm for directly mapping absorbed rays from a Monte Carlo ray tracing model to boundary or volumetric source terms in the computational mesh. The algorithm is compatible with unstructured, two and three-dimensional meshes with varying element shapes. Four case studies were performed on a directly irradiated, windowed solar thermochemical reactor model to validate the method. The method was shown to conserve energy and preserve spatial variation when mapping rays from a Monte Carlo ray tracing model to a computational heat transfer model in ansys fluent.

Increasing CO2 Conversion Efficiency with Optical Thermal Management in Concentrated Solar Reactors: New Dual-Stage Solar Reactor Design for Reduction of CO2 to Fuels

The proposed project will result in a new dual-stage solar chemical reactor designed to convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to value-added chemicals. Using sunlight as the main power source, a sustainable process will be developed that closes the loop on our industrial carbon cycle in an energy efficient and environmentally friendly manner. The hybrid photochemical and photothermal reactor design will vastly increase utilization of the solar spectrum and increase CO2 conversion efficiencies over Dimensional Energy’s current state-of-the-art.
