Data Mining for Faster, Interpretable Solutions to Inverse Problems:A Case Study Using Additive Manufacturing

Solving inverse problems, where we nd the input values that result in desired values of outputs, can be challenging. The solution process is often computationally expensive and it can be di cult to interpret the solution in high-dimensional input spaces. In this paper, we use a problem from additive manufacturing to address these two issues with the intent of making it easier to solve inverse problems and exploit their results. First, focusing on Gaussian process surrogates that are used to solve inverse problems, we describe how a simple modi cation to the idea of tapering can substantially speed up the surrogate without losing accuracy in prediction. Second, we demonstrate that Kohonen self-organizing maps can be used to visualize and interpret the solution to the inverse problem in the high-dimensional input space. For our data set, as not all input dimensions are equally important, we show that using weighted distances results in a better organized map that makes the relationships among the inputs obvious

Patternable Mesoporous Thin Film Quantum Materials via Block Copolymer Self-Assembly: An Emergent Technology?

Recent developments in quantum materials hold promise for revolutionizing energy and information technologies. The use of soft matter self-assembly, for example, by employing block copolymers (BCPs) as structure directing or templating agents, offers facile pathways toward quantum metamaterials with highly tunable mesostructures via scalable solution processing. Here, we report the preparation of patternable mesoporous niobium carbonitride-type thin film superconductors through spin-coating of a hybrid solution containing an amphiphilic BCP swollen by niobia sol precursors and subsequent thermal processing in combination with photolithography. Spin-coated as-made BCP-niobia hybrid thin films on silicon substrates after optional photolithographic definition are heated in air to produce a porous oxide, and subsequently converted in a multistep process to carbonitrides via treatment with high temperatures in reactive gases including ammonia. Grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering suggests the presence of ordered mesostructures in as-made BCP-niobia films without further annealing, consistent with a distorted alternating gyroid morphology that is retained upon thermal treatments. Wide-angle X-ray scattering confirms the synthesis of phase-pure niobium carbonitride nanocrystals with rock-salt lattices within the mesoscale networks. Electrical transport measurements of unpatterned thin films show initial exponential rise in resistivity characteristic of thermal activation in granular systems down to 12.8 K, at which point resistivity drops to zero into a superconducting state. Magnetoresistance measurements determine the superconducting upper critical field to be over 16 T, demonstrating material quality on par with niobium carbonitrides obtained from traditional solid-state synthesis methods. Here. we discuss how such cost-effective and scalable solution-based quantum materials fabrication approaches may be integrated into existing microelectronics processing, promising the emergence of a technology with tremendous academic and industrial potential by combining the capabilities of soft matter self-assembly with quantum materials.

GRAPEVINE: Grids about anything by Poisson's equation in a visually interactive networking environment

A proven 3-D multiple-block elliptic grid generator, designed to run in 'batch mode' on a supercomputer, is improved by the creation of a modern graphical user interface (GUI) running on a workstation. The two parts are connected in real time by a network. The resultant system offers a significant speedup in the process of preparing and formatting input data and the ability to watch the grid solution converge by replotting the grid at each iteration step. The result is a reduction in user time and CPU time required to generate the grid and an enhanced understanding of the elliptic solution process. This software system, called GRAPEVINE, is described, and certain observations are made concerning the creation of such software.

Rapid In Situ Ligand‐Exchange Process Used to Prepare 3D PbSe Nanocrystal Superlattice Infrared Photodetectors

Abstract Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are important building blocks for low‐cost, solution‐processed electronic devices with tunable functionalities. Considerable progress is made in improving charge transport through nanocrystal films by exchanging long insulating ligands with shorter passivating ligands. To take full advantage of this strategy, it is equally important to fabricate close‐packed structures that reduce the average interparticle spacing. Yet it remains a challenge to retain long‐range, close‐packed order after ligand exchange. Here, a novel one‐step in situ ligand‐exchange method is demonstrated that enables rapid (5 min) ligand exchange of nanocrystal films, which are more than 50 layers thick. Using this simple and efficient method, it is shown that the face‐centered cubic ordering of 500 nm thick PbSe nanocrystal films is retained after ligand exchange from oleic acid to benzoic acid. Moreover, it is demonstrated that PbSe nanocrystal photodetectors with a well‐ordered structure have superior optoelectronic properties compared to disordered films; ordered films have a 16× higher responsivity of ≈0.25 A W −1 at 1 V and a 2× faster response time. As far as it is known, this is the first report to realize a rapid one‐step ligand exchange through a thick superlattice film with retention of long‐range order.

Metastable precipitation and ion–extractant transport in liquid–liquid separations of trivalent elements

The extractant-assisted transport of metal ions from aqueous to organic environments by liquid–liquid extraction has been widely used to separate and recover critical elements on an industrial scale. While current efforts focus on designing better extractants and optimizing process conditions, the mechanism that underlies ionic transport remains poorly understood. Here, we report a nonequilibrium process in the bulk aqueous phase that influences interfacial ion transport: the formation of metastable ion–extractant precipitates away from the liquid–liquid interface, separated from it by a depletion region without precipitates. Although the precipitate is soluble in the organic phase, the depletion region separates the two and ions are sequestered in a long-lived metastable state. Since precipitation removes extractants from the aqueous phase, even extractants that are sparingly soluble in water will continue to be withdrawn from the organic phase to feed the aqueous precipitation process. Solute concentrations in both phases and the aqueous pH influence the temporal evolution of the process and ionic partitioning between the precipitate and organic phase. Aqueous ion–extractant precipitation during liquid–liquid extraction provides a reaction path that can influence the extraction kinetics, which plays an important role in designing advanced processes to separate rare earths and other minerals.

Water-Surface Drag Coating: A New Route Toward High-Quality Conjugated Small-Molecule Thin Films with Enhanced Charge Transport Properties

Electronic properties of organic semiconductor (OSC) thin films are largely determined by their morphologies and crystallinities. However, solution-processed conjugated small-molecule OSC thin films usually exhibit abundant grain boundaries and impure grain orientations because of complex fluid dynamics during solution coating. Here, a novel methodology, water-surface drag coating, is demonstrated to fabricate high-quality OSC thin films with greatly enhanced charge transport properties. This method utilizes the water surface to alter the evaporation dynamics of solution to enlarge the grain size, and a unique drag-coating process to achieve the unidirectional growth of organic crystals. Furthermore, using 2,8-difluoro-5,11-bis(triethylsilylethynyl)anthradithiophene (Dif-TES-ADT) as an example, thin films with millimeter-sized single-crystal domains and pure crystallographic orientations are achieved, revealing a significant enhancement (4.7 times) of carrier mobility. More importantly, the resulting film can be directly transferred onto any desired flexible substrates, and flexible transistors based on the Dif-TES-ADT thin films show a mobility as high as 16.1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which represents the highest mobility value for the flexible transistors reported thus far. The method is general for the growth of various high-quality OSC thin films, thus opening up opportunities for high-performance organic flexible electronics.

Dual interfacial H-bonding-enhanced deep-blue hybrid copper–iodide LEDs

Solution-processed light-emitting diodes based on non-toxic copper–iodide hybrids are a compelling solution for efficient and stable deep-blue lighting, owing to their tunability, high photoluminescence efficiency and environmental sustainability. Here we present a hybrid copper–iodide that shows near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield (99.6%) with an emission wavelength of 449 nm and colour coordinates (0.147, 0.087), alongside its emission mechanism and charge transport characteristics. Here, we use the thin film of this hybrid as the sole active emissive layer to fabricate deep-blue light-emitting diodes and subsequently enhance the device performance through a dual interfacial hydrogen-bond passivation strategy. This synergetic surface modification approach, integrating a hydrogen-bond-acceptor self-assembled monolayer with an ultrathin polymethyl methacrylate capping layer, effectively passivates both heterojunctions of the copper–iodide hybrid emissive layer and optimizes charge injections. We achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency of 12.57%, a maximum luminance of 3,970.30 cd m −2 with colour coordinates (0.147, 0.091) and an excellent operational stability (half-lifetime) of 204 hours under ambient conditions. We further showcase a large-area device of 4 cm 2 that maintains high efficiency. Our findings reveal the potential of copper–iodide-based hybrid materials for applications in solid-state lighting and display technologies, offering a versatile strategy for enhancing device performances.

Aqueous Processed All-Polymer Solar Cells with High Open-Circuit Voltage Based on Low-Cost Thiophene–Quinoxaline Polymers

Eco-friendly solution processing and the low-cost synthesis of photoactive materials are important requirements for the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Although varieties of aqueous-soluble acceptors have been developed, the availability of aqueous-processable polymer donors remains quite limited. In particular, the generally shallow highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of existing polymer donors limit further increases in the power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we design and synthesize two water/alcohol-processable polymer donors, poly[(thiophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-T)) and poly[(selenophene-2,5-diyl)-alt-(2-((13-(2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecyl)-2,5,8,11-tetraoxatetradecan-14-yl)oxy)-6,7-difluoroquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)] (P(Qx8O-Se)) with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains, having deep HOMO energy levels (~–5.4 eV). The synthesis of the polymers is achieved in a few synthetic and purification steps at reduced cost. The theoretical calculations uncover that the dielectric environmental variations are responsible for the observed band gap lowering in OEG-based polymers compared to their alkylated counterparts. Notably, the aqueous-processed all-polymer solar cells (aq-APSCs) based on P(Qx8O-T) and poly[(N,N'-bis(3-(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethoxy)ethoxy)-2-((2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)-methyl)propyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl)-alt-(2,5-thiophene)] (P(NDIDEG-T)) active layer exhibit a PCE of 2.27% and high open-circuit voltage (V OC ) approaching 0.8 V, which are among the highest values for aq-APSCs reported to date. This study provides important clues for the design of low-cost, aqueous-processable polymer donors and the fabrication of aqueous-processable OSCs with high V OC .

Some recent developments in predicting unsteady loadings caused by control surface motions

Solution instabilities are identified within the procedures used to predict unsteady loadings due to motions of swept hingeline control surfaces. A preferred solution process that demonstrates the need of calculating smooth residual downwash distributions is described. Numerical results displaying erratic solution behavior when use is made of various forms of pressure expressions currently employed in control surface analyses are presented. A new expression of the asymptotic pressure function is derived, which exactly satisfies the change in boundary conditions around the boundary of the control surface. Results of applying the new pressure function are presented and indicate that stable converged solutions may be achieved for predicting the unsteady loadings caused by motions of swept hingeline control surfaces.

Hierarchial implicit dynamic least-square solution algorithm

This paper develops an implicit type transient solution strategy which possesses hierarchial levels of application. In particular, due to the manner of formulation, stiffness updating, assembly inversion, solution constraint, as well as iteration are all performed at a localized level. The level of iterative calculations depends on the type of hierarchial partitioning employed, namely degree of freedom, nodal, elemental, material/nonlinear group, substructural, and so on. Since the iterative solution process and application of constraints are applied at a local level, the resulting so-called hierarchial implicit solution algorithm possesses very stable and efficient numerical properties and is highly storage efficient. To demonstrate the scheme, the results of several benchmark examples are presented. These enable comparisons with the Newton-Raphson solved implicit transient solution method. Overall the comparisons illustrate the superior stability and efficiency of the hierarchial scheme.

Effects of material non-linearity on the residual stresses in a dendritic silicon crystal ribbon

Thermal stresses developed in a dendritic silicon crystal ribbon have been shown to cause plastic deformation and residual stresses in the ribbon. This paper presents an implementation of a numerical model proposed for thermoelastoplastic behavior of a material. The model has been used to study the effects of plasticity of silicon on the residual stresses. The material properties required to implement this model are all assumed, and the response of the material to the variations in these assumed parameters of the constitutive law and in the finite element mesh is investigated. The steady state growth process is observed to be periodic with nonzero residual stresses. Numerical difficulties are also encountered in the computer solution process, resulting in sharp jumps and large oscillations in the stress responses.

Mechanistic study of pH effect on organic solvent nanofiltration using carboxylated covalent organic framework as a modeling and experimental platform

Covalent organic framework (COF) membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) have attracted growing interest due to their high stability, well-defined pore size, and controllable pore functionality. In aqueous nanofiltration processes, solution pH has a significant effect on membrane permeability, selectivity, and fouling. However, our understanding of pH effects on OSN processes is still limited. In this work, we present experimental and reactive force field molecular dynamics (ReaxFF MD) simulation results on the effect of pH on OSN using a well-characterized carboxylated COF (C-COF) membrane. Filtration experimental and modeling results both demonstrate that pH changes can affect solvent permeance and solute rejection dramatically. Specifically, methanol permeance decreases with the increase of NaOH and HCl concentration, respectively. When Alcian Blue dye was used as the solute in methanol, the selectivity increased from 23% to 98% when changing the feed pH from 2.2 to 10.1, respectively. While ReaxFF MD results show that C-COF solvated pore size is only marginally affected by the pH of solution, methanol diffusion is affected by the size of methanol-solvated Na + and Cl - ions, which increase with increasing Na + and Cl - concentrations. Solution pH change also affected solute solvation layer thicknesses and C-COF pore charges, contributing to the significant AB dye selectivity increase with pH increase. To summarize, we have shown that dramatic changes in C-COF selectivity are not anomalous in OSN, but are instead controllable by varying feed solution pH to modify solvated solute radii and surface charge.

Generalized optimization-based synthesis of membrane systems for multicomponent gas mixture separation

Synthesizing a membrane system to separate multicomponent gas mixture is challenging due to the combinatorial number of feasible configurations and the difficulties in describing the multicomponent permeators. Here we present a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model for synthesizing membrane systems for multicomponent gas mixture separation. The approach employs a richly connected superstructure to represent numerous potential system configurations, and different physics-based surrogate permeator models, such as countercurrent flow or crossflow, to be used in each stage. Moreover, to describe realistic systems, pressure drop equations can be included. We also present solution methods to accelerate the solution process. Through a case study of natural gas sweetening, we demonstrate that the proposed approach is able to obtain good solutions using an off-the-shelf global optimization solver. Finally, we expand the conventional membrane system synthesis problem by introducing feed variability in our model through a case study of an integrated reactor-separation system.

Asymmetric side-chain engineering in semiconducting polymers: a platform for greener processing and post-functionalization of organic electronics

Organic semiconducting polymers are a powerful platform for the design of next-generation technologies due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and solution processability, allowing access to low-cost and scalable manufacturing techniques such as spin-coating, slot-die coating and roll-to-roll printing. However, their extended π-conjugation results in low solubility, requiring the use of toxic halogenated solvents to generate thin films and devices. Furthermore, accessible post-functionalization of semiconductors toward the development of multifunctional devices and sensors remains a challenge due to limited solid-state chemistry for alkyl side chains. In this work, an asymmetric side-chain engineering approach was used to introduce terminal hydroxyl moieties alongside traditional solubilizing branched alkyl chains into an isoindigo-based polymer. The hydroxyl moieties led to significantly improved processability in alcohol-based solvents without sacrificing electronic performance in thin film organic field-effect transistors. Solid state morphologies of the thin films processed from both alcohol-based and traditional halogenated solvents were further characterized using atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering. Additionally, Cryo-EM was utilized in order to characterize the role of asymmetric side-chain functionality in solution state aggregation. The versatility of this design was further probed using fluorescein isothiocyanate to directly functionalize the asymmetric polymer in thin film. Furthermore, this facile solid-state post-functionalization further demonstrates asymmetric side-chain engineering to be a viable approach toward the development of sustainably manufactured multifunctional electronics.

In situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation enhances the efficiency of CuIn(S,Se) 2 solar cells prepared from molecular-ink solutions

Here, we report an efficiency enhancement of solution-processed CuIn(S,Se) 2 (CISSe) thin film solar cells via in situ incorporation of Al 2 O 3 . These films were produced using inks containing CuCl, InCl 3 , AlNO 3 (Al/Al + In: 0.1) and thiourea dissolved in methanol. After spin coating of these solutions in air, samples were subjected to a selenization process. Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profiling analysis showed that Al is evenly distributed throughout the bulk of the film. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that AlNO 3 precursor reacted with oxygen to form nanosized amorphous Al 2 O 3 grains located within the bulk and grain boundaries of CISSe, as well as at both the top and bottom interfaces. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.6% (JS C : 35.8 mA cm –2 , V OC : 518 mV, FF: 62.2%, no anti-reflection coating) was achieved with Al–CISSe solar cell devices integrated with CdS (chemical bath deposition, thickness: 80 nm) and ZnO/ITO bilayers (sputtered, thickness: 300 nm). The average PCE (10.1%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 34.5 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 491 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 59.8%) was nearly 4% (absolute) higher than that measured on CISSe baseline cells fabricated from solutions without Al ($\langle$PCE$\rangle$ = 6.4%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 32.8 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 410 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 47.3%). This in situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation is speculated to play a role in the enhancement of the VOC and FF of the devices through passivation of defects in CISSe reducing interface and bulk recombination, as evidenced by a reduced defect density and an increased activation energy of the dominant recombination mechanism from capacitance and temperature-dependent VOC measurements, respectively.

Chemical Robotics Enabled Exploration of Stability in Multicomponent Lead Halide Perovskites via Machine Learning

Metal halide perovskites have attracted immense interest as a promising material for a variety of optoelectronic and sensing applications. However, issues regarding long-term stability have emerged as the key bottleneck for commercialization. Here, we develop an automated experimental workflow based on combinatorial synthesis and rapid throughput characterization to explore long-term stability of these materials in ambient conditions. We apply it to four model perovskite systems: MA x FA y Cs 1–x–y PbBr 3 , MA x FA y Cs 1–x–y PbI 3 , Cs x FA y MA 1–x–y Pb(Br x+y I 1–x–y ) 3 , and Cs x MA y FA 1–x–y Pb(I x+y Br 1–x–y ) 3 . Non-negative matrix factorization and Gaussian process regression are used to interpolate the photoluminescent behavior of the phase diagram. This interpolative regression analysis helps to distinguish mixtures that form solid solutions from those that segregate into multiple materials, pointing out the most stable regions of the phase diagram. Here, we find stability dependence on composition to be nonuniform within the composition space, suggesting the presence of potential preferential compositional regions. This proposed workflow is universal and can be applied to other solution-processable materials.
