Asymmetric Lithium Extraction and Insertion in High Voltage Spinel at Fast Rate

Spinel-structured ordered-LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (o-LNMO) has experienced a resurgence of interest in the context of reducing scarce elements such as cobalt from lithium-ion battery. O-LNMO undergoes two two-phase reaction at slow rates. However, it is not known if such phenomenon also applies at fast rates. Herein, we investigate the rate-dependent phase transition behavior of o-LNMO through in operando time-resolved X-ray diffraction. The results indicate that a narrow region of solid solution reaction exists for charge and discharge at both slow and fast rate. The overall phase transition is highly asymmetric at fast rates. During fast charge, it is a particle-by-particle mechanism resulting from asynchronized reaction among the particles. Finally, during fast discharge, it is likely a core-shell mechanism involving transition from Li 0+x Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 to Li 1+x Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 in the outer layer of particles. The Li 0.5 Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 phase is suppressed during fast discharge and only appears through Li redistribution upon relaxation.

High Capacity for Mg 2+ Deintercalation in Spinel Vanadium Oxide Nanocrystals

Nonaqueous Mg batteries can theoretically reach high energy density with cost-effective materials, yet no such device to date has performance competitive with Li-ion technologies. A major barrier is the need for oxide cathodes that combine high capacity and voltage. Very few oxides have shown intrinsic ability for Mg 2+ intercalation in electrolytes with acceptably low content of H2O. Herein, we demonstrate that nanocrystals of MgV 2 O 4 can reach high capacity for Mg 2+ deintercalation with a mechanism that preserves their spinel framework, validated through measurements with different chemical and structural sensitivity. The structural stability contrasts with other phases where reaching high capacity required distortions that introduce undesirable mechanical strain. The favorable properties of the oxide allowed cycling in a full cell with Mg metal. This work reveals new insights into the viability of multivalent intercalation in oxides, meeting a milestone toward the feasibility of high-voltage batteries with either Mg metal or Mg-ion anodes.

Harnessing Cation Disorder for Enhancing Ionic Conductivity in Lithium Inverse Spinel Halides

Halides are promising solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries due to their exceptional oxidation stability, high Li-ion conductivity, and mechanical deformability. However, their practicality is limited by the reliance on rare and expensive metals. This study investigates the Li 2 MgCl 4 inverse spinel system as a cost-effective alternative. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that lithium disordering at elevated temperatures significantly reduces the activation energy in Li 2 MgCl 4 . To stabilize this disorder at lower temperatures, we experimentally explored the Li x Zr 1–x/2 Mg x/2 Cl 4 system and found that Zr doping induces both Zr and Li disorder at the 16c site at room temperature (RT). This leads to a 2 order-of-magnitude increase in ionic conductivity for the Li 1.25 Zr 0.375 Mg 0.625 Cl 4 composition, achieving 1.4 × 10 –5 S cm –1 at RT, compared to pristine Li 2 MgCl 4 . By deconvoluting the role of lithium vacancies and dopants, we reveal that cation disordering to the 16c site predominantly enhances ionic conductivity, whereas lithium vacancy concentration has a very limited effect.

Spinel-Structured High Entropy Oxides: Low Temperature Synthesis, Characterization, and Potential Applications

High entropy oxides (HEOs) have recently attracted increasing attention due to their remarkable properties and relatively low cost. Herein we report a simple, highly scalable, and low temperature method for synthesizing spinel (FeNiCoCuZn) 3 O 4 (HEO). We heated an aqueous solution containing divalent cations in high alkali environments to temperatures of 25 - 95 °C for 24 h under atmospheric pressure. The HEO, synthesized at 95 °C for 24 h in 1 M KOH, was paramagnetic at room temperature, with a magnetic mass susceptibility of χ = (7.5 ± 0.2) × 10 –7 m 3 ·kg –1 . It demonstrated stable electrochemical lithium storage performance, with a gravimetric capacity of ∼300 mAh·g –1 at 100 mA·g –1 . It was also active in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction with an overpotential of 460 mV in alkaline media. The band gap energies were in the range of 2.4 eV. Our advancement in the synthesis and processing of transition metal-based HEOs will undoubtedly render them a viable solution for next generation materials for energy production and storage.

High Entropy Protected Sharp Magnetic Transitions in Highly Disordered Spinel Ferrites

How disorder affects magnetic ordering is always an intriguing question, and it becomes even more interesting in the recently rising high entropy oxides due to the extremely high disorder density. However, due to the lack of high-quality single crystal samples, the strong compositional disorder effect on magnetic transition has not been deeply investigated. In this work, we have successfully synthesized high-quality single crystalline high entropy spinel ferrites (Mg 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 ) x Fe 3-x O 4 . Our findings from high-temperature magnetization and neutron diffraction experiments showed ferrimagnetic transitions at 748, 694, and 674 K for x values of 1, 1.5, and 1.8, respectively. Notably, the magnetic transition almost showed no broadening for x values of 1 and 1.5, compared to Fe 3 O 4 . Extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurements provided insights into the elemental distribution among the octahedral and tetrahedral sites. The random distribution of elements across these sites reduced the formation of local clusters and short-range orders, enhancing sample homogeneity and preserving the sharpness of the magnetic transition, despite bond length variation. Here, our study not only marks the first successful synthesis of an HEO bulk single crystal exhibiting long-range magnetic order but also sheds light on the interaction between high configurational entropy and magnetic orderings. This opens new avenues for future research and applications of magnetic high entropy oxides.

Framework Short-Range Order Observed in a Spinel-Type Li Superionic Conductor

Solid-state superionic conductors are characterized by rich structural disorders. Though structural complexities are central to their functionalities, they often give rise to short-range order that eludes detection by conventional diffraction-based techniques and is thus overlooked in establishing precise structure-property relationships. In this work, we synthesized single crystals of a recently discovered lithium (Li) superionic conductor Li16.2(1)In9.00(2)Sn1.10(1)O23.8 (LISO) for in-depth characterizations of structural subtleties. LISO exhibits an unusual spinel-like phase with significant Li overstoichiometry and a face-sharing Li network. Single-crystal neutron diffraction confirms significant Li disorder, as manifested in Li site splitting and partial occupancy. More importantly, synchrotron diffuse scattering combined with 3D-ΔPDF analysis and Monte Carlo simulations reveal short-range order in the nonalkali framework that might contribute to the phase stability and ionic conductivity. This work showcases an example in which subtle local energetics can be directly visualized in structurally disordered ionic conductors.

Ultra-thin lithium aluminate spinel ferrite films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and low damping

Ultra-thin films of low damping ferromagnetic insulators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy have been identified as critical to advancing spin-based electronics by significantly reducing the threshold for current-induced magnetization switching while enabling new types of hybrid structures or devices. Here, we have developed a new class of ultra-thin spinel structure Li 0.5 Al 1.0 Fe 1.5 O 4 (LAFO) films on MgGa 2 O 4 (MGO) substrates with: 1) perpendicular magnetic anisotropy; 2) low magnetic damping and 3) the absence of degraded or magnetic dead layers. These films have been integrated with epitaxial Pt spin source layers to demonstrate record low magnetization switching currents and high spin-orbit torque efficiencies. These LAFO films on MGO thus combine all of the desirable properties of ferromagnetic insulators with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, opening new possibilities for spin based electronics.

Local structural distortions drive magnetic molecular field in compositionally complex spinel oxide

Understanding how local distortions determine the functional properties of high entropy materials, containing five or more elements at the same crystallographic site, is an open challenge. We address this for a compositionally complex spinel oxide (Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Cr 2 O 4 (A 5 Cr 2 O 4 ). By comparatively examining extended X-ray absorption fine structure on A 5 Cr 2 O 4 and its parent counterparts, ACr 2 O 4 , along with density functional theory calculations for multiple configurations, we find that the element-specific distortions go beyond the first neighbor. Specifically, the strong Jahn-Teller distortion present in CuCr 2 O 4 is found to be completely suppressed in A 5 Cr 2 O 4 even locally. Instead, there is a broad distribution of Cu-O and Cu-Cr bond distances, while other A-O distances acquire certain specific values. This study demonstrates the additional flexibility of a cationic sublattice in maintaining a uniform long-range structure, in contrast to previous reports showing only the accommodative anionic sublattice. The mean-field magnetic interactions of A 5 Cr 2 O 4 exhibit a striking resemblance to those of NiCr 2 O 4 , despite the presence of multiple magnetic ions and variable bond lengths. This originates from the comparability of bond lengths around Cr in both materials. Our study paves the way for a deeper understanding of the impact of local structural distortions on the physical properties of compositionally complex quantum materials.

Strong Purcell enhancement at telecom wavelengths afforded by spinel Fe 3 O 4 nanocrystals with size-tunable plasmonic properties

Developments in the field of nanoplasmonics have the potential to advance applications from information processing and telecommunications to light-based sensing. Traditionally, nanoscale noble metals such as gold and silver have been used to achieve the targeted enhancements in light-matter interactions that result from the presence of localized surface plasmons (LSPs). However, interest has recently shifted to intrinsically doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) for their ability to display LSP resonances (LSPRs) over a much broader spectral range, including the infrared (IR). Among semiconducting plasmonic NCs, spinel metal oxides (sp-MOs) are an emerging class of materials with distinct advantages in accessing the telecommunications bands in the IR and affording useful environmental stability. In this work, we report the plasmonic properties of Fe 3 O 4 sp-MO NCs, known previously only for their magnetic functionality, and demonstrate their ability to modify the light-emission properties of telecom-emitting quantum dots (QDs). We establish the synthetic conditions for tuning sp-MO NC size, composition and doping characteristics, resulting in unprecedented tunability of electronic behavior and plasmonic response over 450 nm. In particular, with diameter-dependent variations in free-electron concentration across the Fe 3 O 4 NC series, we introduce a strong NC size dependency onto the optical response. In addition, our observation of plasmonics-enhanced decay rates from telecom-emitting QDs reveals Purcell enhancement factors for simple plasmonic-spacer-emitter sandwich structures up to 51-fold, which are comparable to values achieved previously only for emitters in the visible range coupled with conventional noble metal NCs.

Studies on the structure and the magnetic properties of high-entropy spinel oxide (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4

The study of high-entropy materials has attracted enormous interest since they could show new functional properties that are not observed in their related parent phases. Here, we report single crystal growth, structure, thermal transport, and magnetic property studies on a novel high-entropy oxide with the spinel structure (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 . We have successfully grown high-quality single crystals of this high-entropy oxide using the optical floating zone growth technique for the first time. The sample was confirmed to be a phase pure high-entropy oxide using x-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Through magnetization measurements, we found (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 exhibits a cluster spin glass state, though the parent phases show either antiferromagnetic ordering or spin glass states. Furthermore, we also found that (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 has much greater thermal expansion than its CoAl 2 O 4 parent compound using high resolution neutron Larmor diffraction. We further investigated the structure of this high-entropy material via Raman spectroscopy and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements. From Raman spectroscopy measurements, we observed (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 to display a combination of the active Raman modes in its parent compounds with the modes shifted and significantly broadened. This result, together with the varying bond lengths probed by EXAFS, reveals severe local lattice distortions in this high-entropy phase. Additionally, we found a substantial decrease in thermal conductivity and suppression of the low temperature thermal conductivity peak in (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 , consistent with the increased lattice defects and strain. These findings advance the understanding of the dependence of thermal expansion and transport on the lattice distortions in high-entropy materials.

Hund’s flat band in a frustrated spinel oxide

Electronic flat bands associated with quenched kinetic energy and heavy electron mass have attracted great interest for promoting strong electronic correlations and emergent phenomena such as high-temperature charge fractionalization and superconductivity. Intense experimental and theoretical research has been devoted to establishing the rich nontrivial metallic and heavy fermion phases intertwined with such localized electronic states. Here, in this study, we investigate the transition metal oxide spinel LiV 2 O 4 , an enigmatic heavy fermion compound lacking localized f orbital states. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and dynamical mean-field theory to reveal a kind of correlation-induced flat band with suppressed interatomic electron hopping arising from intra-atomic Hund’s coupling. The appearance of heavy quasiparticles is ascribed to a proximate orbital-selective Mott state characterized by fluctuating local moments as evidenced by complementary magnetotransport measurements. The spectroscopic fingerprints of long-lived quasiparticles and their disappearance with increasing temperature further support the emergence of a high-temperature “bad” metal state observed in transport data. This work resolves a long-standing puzzle on the origin of heavy fermion behavior and unconventional transport in LiV 2 O 4 . Simultaneously, it opens a path to achieving flat bands through electronic interactions in d-orbital systems with geometrical frustration, potentially enabling the realization of exotic phases of matter such as the fractionalized Fermi liquids.

Spin dynamics in the skyrmion-host lacunar spinel GaV 4 S 8

Here in the lacunar spinel GaV 4 S 8 , the interplay of spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom produces a rich phase diagram that includes an unusual Néel-type skyrmion phase composed of molecular spins. To provide insight into the interactions underlying this complex phase diagram, we study the spin excitations in GaV 4 S 8 through inelastic neutron scattering measurements on polycrystalline and single crystal samples. Using linear spin wave theory, we describe the spin wave excitations using a model where V 4 clusters decorate an fcc lattice. The effective cluster model includes a ferromagnetic interaction and a weaker antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the neighboring molecular spins. Our work clarifies the spin interactions in GaV 4 S 8 and supports the picture of interacting molecular clusters.

Electronic origin of half-metal to semiconductor transition and colossal magnetoresistance in spinel HgCr 2 Se 4

Half metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and are crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr 2 Se 4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr 2 Se 4 (n–HgCr 2 Se 4 ) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (E F ) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidence of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr 2 Se 4 , which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

Epitaxial stabilization of thin films of the frustrated Ge-based spinels

Frustrated magnets can host numerous exotic many-body quantum and topological phenomena. GeNi 2 O 4 is a three-dimensional S=1 frustrated magnet with an unusual two-stage transition to the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic ground state, while GeCu 2 O 4 is a high-pressure phase with a strongly tetragonally elongated spinel structure and magnetic lattice formed by S=1/2 CuO 2 linear chains with frustrated interchain exchange interactions and exotic magnetic behavior. Here, we report on the thin-film epitaxial stabilization of these two compounds. The developed growth mode, surface morphology, crystal structure, and copper valence state were characterized by in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy, x-ray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and resonant x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results pave an alternative route to the comprehensive investigation of the puzzling magnetic properties of these compounds and the exploration of emergent features driven by strain.

Structural and electronic properties of the first iridium containing mixed B-site spinel oxide: Cu [ Ir 1.5 Cu 0.5 ] O 4

Geometrically frustrated systems populated with large spin-orbit coupled ions are an ideal setting for the exploration of novel exotic states of matter. In this study we present an example of iridium on a mixed B-site spinel oxide structure: Cu [ Ir 1.498 ( 2 ) Cu 0.502 ( 2 ) ] O 4 . Synchrotron XRD refinements reveal a face-centered-cubic structure with space group F d 3 ¯ m and mixed Cu-Ir site disorder within the B 2 O 4 rocksalt substructure. Electrical properties reveal a metallic state within the 50–600-K range with a Kondo effect at T < 50 K . X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements show a mixed Cu 1 + / 2 + and Ir 3 + / 4 + charge partitioned picture, which suggests a metallic/band description with reduced on-site Coulomb interactions. Spin-glass-like freezing is seen at T g = 49 K , and the hysteresis behavior for T > T g resembles that of a strongly frustrated magnet. DFT calculations show sizable hybridization between the Cu 3 d and Ir 5 d states with an effective mixed Ir 3 + / 4 + charge partitioned picture, supporting the electronic and XAS results.
