Revised Radiometric Calibration Technique for LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper Data by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

A technique for the radiometric correction of LANDSAT-4 Thematic Mapper data was proposed by the Canada Center for Remote Sensing. Subsequent detailed observations of raw image data, raw radiometric calibration data and background measurements extracted from the raw data stream on High Density Tape highlighted major shortcomings in the proposed method which if left uncorrected, can cause severe radiometric striping in the output product. Results are presented which correlate measurements of the DC background with variations in both image data background and calibration samples. The effect on both raw data and on data corrected using the earlier proposed technique is explained, and the correction required for these factors as a function of individual scan line number for each detector is described. It is shown how the revised technique can be incorporated into an operational environment.

Radiometric Calibration and Geocoded Precision Processing of LANDSAT-4 Multispectral Scanner Products by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing

Inherent in the method used by CCRS for the radiometric calibration of LANDSAT-4 MSS data is the possibility for the user to convert the corrected digital values to the absolute scene radiance of the target under observation. The generation of the constants needed for this final conversion requires both the pre-launch and post-launch radiometric calibration constants as supplied by NASA. Results of some preliminary comparative studies of the radiometric properties of the LANDSAT-4 MSS versus earlier satellites in the LANDSAT series are presented as well as early observations on the stability of the calibration data, within one scene, within one orbit, and over a period of several months. Residual striping in the corrected products is estimated. The method used to perform precision processing of the LANDSAT MSS data for generating geocoded or map compatible LANDSAT MSS products in the Unviersal Transverse Mercator projection is also reviewed. LANDSAT-4 MSS precision processed products are evaluated for geodetic accuracy, and are compared to similar products from the previous LANDSAT satellites to assess the orbit independent registration accuracy.

Development of long wavelength semiconductor diode lasers near 28 microns for use in infrared heterodyne spectrometers

The development of tunable diode lasers operating in the 28 micrometers spectral region for use in infrared heterodyne spectrometers is reported. A process capable of yielding lasers emitting 500 micron W of multimode power, 112 micron W in a true single mode and true single mode operation at laser currents of up to 35% above threshold was developed. Results were obtained from narrow mesastripe (20 micrometer wide) short cavity (120 micrometer length) laser configurations. Six stripe geometry lasers, with a variety of cavity widths and lengths were delivered. The techniques to fabricate such devices was obtained and the long term reliability of such lasers by reproducible electrical and optical output characteristics fabrication from lasers are demonstrated.

Voyager disk resolved photometry of the Saturnian satellites

The scattering properties of the icy satellites of Saturn are studied. Scans of intensity along the photometric equator near opposition are analyzed, and disk-resolved measurements of intensity are fitted to simple photometric functions. Histograms of the albedo distribution across the satellite disks are constructed, and the geometric albedos are determined as a function of wavelength. It is found that, at low phase angles, Rhea and Dione closely follow lunar behavior with almost no limb darkening. Mimas, Tethys, and especially Enceladus show significant limb darkening at low phase angles, which suggest multiple scattering is important for their surfaces. No satellite's surface can be described by Lambert's law. The darker satellites are redder, and the darker areas of each satellite are redder. A longitudinal dark stripe which represents a 15 percent decrease in albedo is situated near the center of the trailing side of Tethys. Mimas and Enceladus both have remarkably flat spectral reflectances into the ultraviolet.

Single contact tailored gain phased array of semiconductor lasers

A single contact tailored gain-guided array is demonstrated in which the gain profile across the array is made strongly asymmetric by varying the width of the contact stripes. A proton isolated arary of six (GaAl)As lasers with 5-micron separations and widths varying linearly between 3 and 8 microns had a single lobed far field 2 deg wide, close to the diffraction limit for a single supermode. Fabrication of this device is simple, and suited to large-scale processing techniques. It is also shown that in such an asymmetric gain-guided array the fundamental mode is favored over higher order modes, and that higher order modes can have single lobed far-field patterns differing only slightly from that of the fundamental.

Importance of the Tectonic Motions on Ganymede

Voyager close up views of Ganymede reveal some provinces of old, cratered, dark terrains that are broken into polygons and cut through by light stripes of grooved terrains. The groove terrain unit and its relationships with the other units was studied at various scales because these features seem to relate at least to two main scales of processes. Minor displacements concerning only local features, i.e., large scale processes and major displacements concerning usually the major evolution of the surface, i.e., small scale processes. It appears that tectonic processes, at least in the studied areas, if playing a role in the formation of local or regional features, are very limited. The conclusions reached agree with those of Thomas et al. who show that post grooves basins reveal the presence of a primitive grid that is not disturbed by the grooved terrains.

Noise correction on LANDSAT images using a spline-like algorithm

Many applications using LANDSAT images face a dilemma: the user needs a certain scene (for example, a flooded region), but that particular image may present interference or noise in form of horizontal stripes. During automatic analysis, this interference or noise may cause false readings of the region of interest. In order to minimize this interference or noise, many solutions are used, for instane, that of using the average (simple or weighted) values of the neighboring vertical points. In the case of high interference (more than one adjacent line lost) the method of averages may not suit the desired purpose. The solution proposed is to use a spline-like algorithm (weighted splines). This type of interpolation is simple to be computer implemented, fast, uses only four points in each interval, and eliminates the necessity of solving a linear equation system. In the normal mode of operation, the first and second derivatives of the solution function are continuous and determined by data points, as in cubic splines. It is possible, however, to impose the values of the first derivatives, in order to account for shapr boundaries, without increasing the computational effort. Some examples using the proposed method are also shown.

Evaluation of Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper and multispectral scanner data quality

Landsat-4 image data quality was evaluated for test sites in Iowa and Illinois. Radiometric and geometric quality was tested and an applications evaluation was carried out using a cooling-pond thermal-mapping example. Geometric quality was found to be generally very good. Small errors were found in registration of the middle IR bands of the TM and the thermal IR band was found to be misregistered by one 120-meter pixel. Radiometric quality of the TM is excellent with only minor striping effects.

Thematic mapper data analysis

The geological applications of remote sensing technology are discussed, with emphasis given to the analysis of data from the Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument onboard the Landsat 4 satellite. The flight history and design characteristics of the Landsat 4/TM are reviewed, and some difficulties endountered in the interpretation of raw TM data are discussed, including: the volume of data; residual noise; detector-to-detector striping; and spatial misregistration between measurements. Preliminary results of several geological, lithological, geobotanical mapping experiments are presented as examples of the geological applications of the TM, and some areas for improving the guality of TM imagery are identified.

Effect of solar-cell junction geometry on open-circuit voltage

Simple analytical models have been found that adequately describe the voltage behavior of both the stripe junction and dot junction grating cells as a function of junction area. While the voltage in the former case is found to be insensitive to junction area reduction, significant voltage increases are shown to be possible for the dot junction cell. With regard to cells in which the junction area has been increased in a quest for better performance, it was found that (1) texturation does not affect the average saturation current density J0, indicating that the texturation process is equivalent to a simple extension of junction area by a factor of square root of 3 and (2) the vertical junction cell geometry produces a sizable decrease in J0 that, unfortunately, is more than offset by the effects of attendant areal increases.

Bright spot analysis of ocean-dump plumes using Landsat MSS

Identifying ocean-dumped materials by analysing the upwelled solar energy from the plume is complicated by the dispersion of the plume and the spectral absorption of the water. It is shown that the spectral analysis of ocean-dump plumes, using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data, should be confined to the brightest area within the plume, the region where the waste material is least dispersed and nearest the surface. The decay of the upwelled radiance with time of the brightest pixel within the plume, at least for iron acid waste, is predictable. An accurate age determination of an acid plume is limited by striping within the MSS data.

Methods for destriping Landsat Thematic Mapper images - A feasibility study for an online destriping process in the Thematic Mapper Image Processing System (TIPS)

Methods for destriping TM images and results of the application of these methods to selected TM scenes with sensor and scan striping, which was not removed by the radiometric correction during the TM Archive Generation Phase in TIPS, are presented. These methods correct only for gain and offset differences between detectors over many image lines and do not consider within-line effects. The feasibility of implementing a destriping process online in TIPS is also described.

Tectonic setting and evolution of late Archaean greenstone belts of Superior Province, Canada

Late Archean (3.0-2.5 Ga) greenstone belts are a major component of the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield where alternating, metavolcanic - rich and metasedimentary - rich subprovinces form a prominent central striped region bordered in part by high-grade gneiss subprovinces, the Pikiwitonei and Minto in the north, and the Minnesota River Valley in the south. The high-grade gneiss subprovinces are characterized by granulite facies gneiss of plutonic and supracrustal origin, and by abundant plutonic rocks. Minnesota River Valley has rocks older than 3.5 Ga; absolute ages of Pikiwitonei and Minto rocks are unknown but Minto does have north-south structural trends distinctive from the dominant east-west structures of Superior Province. A discussion follows.

Comparison of the 1984 and 1985 AIS data over the Singatse Range (Yerington), Nevada

The Singatse Range is composed of a series of 53 types of volcanic, plutonic, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. In addition the Jurassic plutonic rocks are also of economic interest for their copper mineralization which is contained in a porphyry dike swarm. The 1984 and 1985 flight results from the Airborne Imaging Spectrometer (AIS) instrument flown in the NASA/JPL C-130 aircraft are contrasted and compared. The 1984 data are less noisy than the 1985, in which many sets of vertical stripings from bad detectors can be seen. Significantly however, enough of the hydrothermal alteration patterns can be seen in each line at the mutual crossing points that one can say that the specific targets were detected in both year's flights. The spectra of both years are corrupted by the second-order effect from the grating, but 0-H bond absorption at essentially correct wavelengths for sericite and/or kaolinite can be seen.

Means for phase locking the outputs of a surface emitting laser diode array

An array of diode lasers, either a two-dimensional array of surface emitting lasers, or a linear array of stripe lasers, is phase locked by a diode laser through a hologram which focuses the output of the diode laser into a set of distinct, spatially separated beams, each one focused onto the back facet of a separate diode laser of the array. The outputs of the diode lasers thus form an emitted coherent beam out of the front of the array.

The electron-cyclotron maser instability as a source of plasma radiation

The generation of continuum bursts from the sun at dm and m wavelengths (in particular, type IV bursts) via the electron-cyclotron-maser instability is examined. The maser instability can be driven by an electron distribution with either a loss-cone anisotropy or a peak at large pitch angles. For omega(p)/Omega(e) much greater than 1, the maser emission is produced by electrons interacting through a harmonic (cyclotron) resonance and is electrostatic, being in the upper hybrid mode at frequencies approximately equal to omega(p). Coalescence processes are required to convert the electrostatic waves into transverse radiation which can escape from the source region. Whether the resultant spectrum is nearly a smooth continuum or has a zebra-stripe pattern (both of which occur in type IV bursts) depends on the form of the electron distribution, inhomogeneities in the density and magnetic field, and whether the maser reaches saturation. For at least the case of some type IV dm bursts with fine structure, comparison with observations seems to indicate that the electrons producing the emission are more likely to have a loss-cone distribution, and that the maser instability is not at saturation.

Diode-pumped continuous-wave Nd:glass laser

The paper reports on diode-laser pumping of monolithic Nd:glass laser oscillators. End pumping with a single-stripe diode laser, a threshold of 2.2 mW, and a slope efficiency of 42 percent were observed on a 2-mm-long oscillator with a mode radius of 35 microns. The oscillator generated 2.5 mW of single-ended output power in many axial modes.

Intrusions in the active layer of channeled-substrate-planar laser diodes

Channeled-substrate-planar laser diodes from various wafers were observed to develop a node or dark spot in their near-field patterns after failure during lifetesting. 'Node' devices from each wafer were angle-lapped and stained in an attempt to uncover a physical mechanism for this common failure symptom. Optical microscopic examination of the beveled cross sections revealed that an intrusion, in the form of a spike at the tip of the zinc diffusion front, had penetrated into the active layer of these diodes. The node observed in the near-field pattern appears to be in a position correspondig to the location of the spike in the active region. In addition, cathodoluminescence measurements on other 'node' diodes revealed a dark line region approximately 2-micron-wide running parallel to and in the middle of the 5-micron contact stripe. It is believed that this dark line region is representative of an area of nonradiative recombination which occurs in the portion of the active layer containing the intrusion.
