Highly soluble copper(ι) iodide-based hybrid luminescent semiconductors containing molecular and one-dimensional coordinated anionic inorganic motifs

Copper(I) iodide-based inorganic–organic hybrid semiconductors are considered promising materials for various optoelectronic applications. Here, using imidazolium bridged benzotriazoles as multidentate ligands, we designed and synthesized a series of all-in-one (AIO)-type CuI hybrid materials that hold both ionic and coordinate bonds at the interface of organic and inorganic modules. Their structures range from 0D clusters to 2D extended networks built on various molecular (0D) and chain-like (1D) anionic inorganic motifs that are interconnected through cationic ligands via multiple Cu–N bonds. Benefiting from their unique bonding nature, these compounds exhibit high stability towards heat and moisture and can be well dissolved in polar aprotic solvents. They emit low-energy light spanning from yellow to red color (550–625 nm). Finally, the electronic structure, emission mechanism, and effect of different coordination modes on their photophysical properties were studied using both experimental and theoretical methods, which has provided insight into the structure–property relationship of these inorganic–organic semiconductors.

Discovering polyelemental nanostructures with redistributed plasmonic modes through combinatorial synthesis

Coupling plasmonic and functional materials provides a promising way to generate multifunctional structures. However, finding plasmonic nanomaterials and elucidating the roles of various geometric and dielectric configurations are tedious. This work describes a combinatorial approach to rapidly exploring and identifying plasmonic heteronanomaterials. Symmetry-broken noble/non-noble metal particle heterojunctions (~100 nanometers) were synthesized on multiwindow silicon chips with silicon nitride membranes. The metal types and the interface locations were controlled to establish a nanoparticle library, where the particle morphology and scattering color can be rapidly screened. By correlating structural data with near- and far-field single-particle spectroscopy data, we found that certain low-energy plasmonic modes could be supported across the heterointerface, while others are localized. Furthermore, we found a series of triangular heteronanoplates stabilized by epitaxial Moiré superlattices, which show strong plasmonic responses despite largely comprising a lossy metal (~70 atomic %). These architectures can become the basis for multifunctional and cost-effective plasmonic devices.

Complex Dirac-like Electronic Structure in Atomic Site-Ordered Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6

We report the synthesis via an indium flux method of a novel single-crystalline compound Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 that belongs to the cubic Ir 3 Ge 7 structure type. In Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 , the In and Ge atoms preferentially occupy, respectively, the 12d and 16f sites of the Im3¯m space group, thus creating a colored variant of the Ir 3 Ge 7 structure. Like the other compounds of the Ir 3 Ge 7 family, Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 shows potential as a thermoelectric, displaying a relatively large power factor, PF ~ 2 mW/cm K 2 , at a temperature T ~ 225 K, albeit showing a modest figure of merit, ZT = 8 x 10 -4 , because of the lack of a finite band gap. These figures might improve through a use of chemical substitution strategies to achieve band gap opening. Remarkably, electronic band structure calculations reveal that this compound displays a complex Dirac-like electronic structure relatively close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure is composed of several Dirac type-I and type-II nodes, and even Dirac type-III nodes that result from the touching between a flat band and a linearly dispersing band. Here, this rich Dirac-like electronic dispersion suggests the possibility to observe experimentally Dirac type-III nodes and study their role in the physical properties of Rh 3 In 3.4 Ge 3.6 and related Ir 3 Ge 7 -type materials.

What Turns Galaxies Off? the Different Morphologies of Star-Forming and Quiescent Galaxies Since z Approximates 2 from CANDELS

We use HST/WFC3 imaging from the CANDELS multicyc1e treasury survey, in conjunction with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, to explore the evolution of galactic structure for galaxies with stellar masses > 3 x 10(exp 10) Solar Mass from Z= 2.2 to the present epoch, a time span of 10 Gyr. We explore the relationship between rest-frame optical color, stellar mass, star formation activity and the structural parameters of galaxies as determined from parametric fits to the surface brightness profiles of galaxies. We confirm the dramatic evolution from z= 2.2 to the present day in the number density of non-star-forming galaxies above 3 x 10(exp 10) Solar Mass reported by other authors. We find that the vast majority of these quiescent systems have concentrated light profiles, as parameterized by the Sersic index, and the population of concentrated galaxies grows similarly rapidly. We examine the joint distribution of star formation activity, Sersic index, stellar mass, mass divided by radius (a proxy for velocity dispersion), and stellar surface density. Quiescence correlates poorly with stellar mass at all z < 2.2 (given the approx < 0.2 dex scatter between halo mass and stellar mass at z approximates 0 inferred by More et al, this argues against halo mass being the only factor determining quiescence). Quiescence correlates better with Sersic index, 'velocity dispersion' and stellar surface density, where Sersic index correlates the best (increasingly so at lower redshift). Yet, there is significant scatter between quiescence and galaxy structure: while the vast majority of quiescent galaxies have prominent bulges, many of them have significant disks, and a number of bulge-dominated galaxies have significant star formation. Noting the rarity of quiescent galaxies without prominent bulges, we argue that a prominent bulge (and, perhaps by association, a supermassive black hole) is a necessary but not sufficient condition for quenching star formation on galactic scales over the last 10 Gyr; such a result is qualitatively consistent with the expectations of the AGN feedback paradigm.

Evaluation of colorless polyimide film for thermal control coating applications

A series of essentially colorless aromatic polyimide films was synthesized and characterized with the objective of obtaining maximum optical transparency for applications in space. Optical transparency is a requirement for high performance polymeric films used in second surface mirror coatings on thermal control systems. The intensity in color of aromatic polyimide films was lowered by reducing the electronic interaction between chromophoric centers in the polymer molecular structure and by using highly purified monomers. The resulting lightly colored to colorless polyimide films were characterized by UV-visible and infrared spectroscopy before and after exposure to 300 equivalent solar hours UV irradiation and varying doses of 1 MeV electron irradiation. After irradiation, the films were found to be 2 to 2.5 times more transparent than commercial polyimide film of the same thickness.

Space Environmentally Stable Polyimides and Copolyimides

Polyimides with a unique combination of properties including low color in thin films, atomic oxygen (AO), ultra-violet (UV) radiation resistance, solubility in organic solvents in the imide form, high glass transition (T(sub g)) temperatures and high thermal stability have been prepared and characterized. The polymers were prepared by reacting a novel aromatic diamine with aromatic dianhydrides in a polar aprotic solvent. The solubility of the polymers in the imide form as well as the color density of thin films were dependent upon the chemical structure of the dianhydride. Several thin films (25-50 mm thick) prepared by solution casting of amide acid or imide solutions exhibited very low color and high optical transparency (approximately 90%) as determined by UV/visible spectroscopy. The polymers exhibited T(sub g)s >200 C depending upon the structure of the dianhydride and temperatures of 5% weight loss approximately 500C in air as determined by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis. Thin films coated with silver/inconel were exposed to a high fluence of AO and 1000 equivalent solar hours of UV radiation. The effects of these exposures on optical properties were minor. These space environmentally durable polymers are potentially useful in a variety of applications on spacecraft such as thin film membranes on antennas, second-surface mirrors, thermal/optical coatings and multi-layer thermal insulation (MLI) blanket materials. The chemistry, physical and mechanical properties of the polymers as well as their responses to AO and UV exposure will be discussed.

Application of multispectral color photography to flame flow visualization

For flames of short duration and low intensity of radiation a spectroscopical flame diagnostics is difficult. In order to find some other means of extracting information about the flame structure from its radiation, the feasibility of using multispectral color photography was successfully evaluated. Since the flame photographs are close-ups, there is a considerable parallax between the single images, when several cameras are used, and additive color viewing is not possible. Each image must be analyzed individually, it is advisable to use color film in all cameras. One can either use color films of different spectral sensitivities or color films of the same type with different color filters. Sharp cutting filters are recommended.

Temperature-plant pigment-optical relations in a recurrent offshore mesoscale eddy near Point Conception, California

The temperature-plant pigment-optical structure of a mesoscale anticyclonic eddy consistently found in shipboard surveys and satellite-sensed data several hundred kilometers southwest of Point Conception, CA, is described on three different time scales (100-day mesoscale, annual, and several-year). The satellite coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) ocean color imagery detected the near-surface chlorophyll structure of the eddy, but in situ optical and plant pigment data suggest that such imagery does not provide a good estimate of the integrated chlorophyll field of the eddy. The temperature and plant pigment boundaries of the eddy, as determined from two-dimensional gradients of advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and CZCS imagery, do not coincide spatially. This and in situ temperature, plant pigment, and optical structure provide additional evidence that some eddy systems in the California Current are not isolated vortex systems but rather continuously entrain waters of nonlocal origin laterally into their upper layers. Within the California Current a ratio of AVHRR/CZCS data is useful for separating inshore from oceanic water masses and following their surface entrainment by offshore vortices. The historical 28-year California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations data for the Point Conception region of the California Current and remotely sensed data over this region show that the Point Conception eddy is a recurrent feature in the offshore California Current. Moreover, the available data provide evidence that a large number of warm-core mesoscale eddies occur simultaneously in a transition zone between coastal and oceanic regimes, that these features recur at preferred locations within the transition zone, and that this family of eddies should impose a significant offshore boundary condition on the flow of the California Current.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of J PC =1 -- ,(o,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function (Φn(r)) in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator ($\bar{c}cg$) between the vacuum and n-th state for J PC , with r being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their r-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that r can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of Y (42600) and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for (0,1,2) -+ charmonium-like hybrids in Xc0,1,2N and J/ψω(φ) final states.

Renewed Mapping of the Nepthys Mons Quadrangle (V-54), Venus

After a long hiatus due to competing tasks with the PI, mapping of Venus' Nepthys Mons Quadrangle (V-54, 300-330degE, 25-50degS) has been resumed, with planned submission late in 2008 or early 2009. Major goals are to determine the style of volcanism and tectonism over time, the evolution of shield volcanoes, the evolution of coronae, the characteristics of plains volcanism, and what these observations tell us about the general geologic history of Venus. This abstract largely repeats earlier progress reports, with some updates to show GEMS that the PI intends to complete this task in the near future. Methods: Geologic units and structures have been mapped onto hardcopy FMAPs and then transferred to the 1:5 million-scale map base (Figure 1). Pseudostereo anaglyphs have proved an indispensable tool and have resulted in a virtual complete revision of previously mapped areas [1,2]. At FMAP scale, structural trends and inferred ages are broken out using different symbols and colors. These are in the process of being transferred to a 1:5 million-scale structure map separate from the geologic map. The geologic units, structures, impact craters, coronae, and volcanoes are being arranged in time-stratigraphic sequences as the mapping progresses.

On duality of color and kinematics in (A)dS momentum space

We explore color-kinematic duality for tree-level AdS/CFT correlators in momentum space. We start by studying the bi-adjoint scalar in AdS at tree-level as an illustrative example. We follow this by investigating two forms of color-kinematic duality in Yang-Mills theory, the first for the integrated correlator in AdS 4 and the second for the integrand in general AdS d +1 . For the integrated correlator, we find color-kinematics does not yield additional relations among n -point, color-ordered correlators. To study color-kinematics for the AdS d +1 Yang-Mills integrand, we use a spectral representation of the bulk-to-bulk propagator so that AdS diagrams are similar in structure to their flat space counterparts. Finally, we study color KLT relations for the integrated correlator and double-copy relations for the AdS integrand. We find that double-copy in AdS naturally relates the bi-adjoint theory in AdS d +3 to Yang-Mills in AdS d +1 . We also find a double-copy relation at three-points between Yang-Mills in AdS d +1 and gravity in AdS d– 1 and comment on the higher-point generalization. By analytic continuation, these results on AdS/CFT correlators can be translated into statements about the wave function of the universe in de Sitter.

A Challenge for Discrimination of Color-Singlet versus Color-Octet Quarkonium Production

The precise mechanism for production of quarkonium at hadron colliders is still an open question. Within non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, quarkonium production cross sections can be factorized into short-distance, perturbative contributions and universal, non-perturbative, long-distance matrix elements, and then summed over quantum numbers of the heavy quark pair. In principle, at short-distances, the heavy quark pair can be either in a color-singlet or color-octet state, and it is desirable to establish the relative contributions to compare with data and to make predictions in different experimental environments. From the explicit form of the lowest-order perturbative matrix elements for color-singlet and color-octet production, we show that the structure of the optimal observable for discrimination on phase space, the likelihood ratio, has strong dependence on the angular momentum state of the heavy quark pair. This presents an obstruction for construction of a single, robust discrimination observable that can be applied to production of an arbitrary quarkonium state.

Linear geologic structure and magic rock discrimination as determined from infrared data

Color infrared photographs of the Beartooth Mountains, Montana show the distribution of mafic dikes and amphibolite bodies. Lineaments that cross grassy plateaus can be identified as dikes by the marked constrast between the dark rocks and the red vegetation. Some amphibolite bodies in granitic terrain can also be detected by infrared photography and their contacts can be accurately drawn due to enchanced contrast of the two types of rock in the near infrared. Reflectance measurements made in the field for amphibolite and granite show that the granite is 25% to 50% more reflective in the near infrared than in the visible region. Further enhancement is due to less atmospheric scattering than in the visible region. Thermal infrared images of the Mill Creek, Oklahoma test site provided information on geologic faults and fracture systems not obtainable from photographs. Subtle stripes that cross outcrop and intervening soil areas and which probably record water distribution are also shown on infrared photographs.

Exploration of the asteroids

A mission to an earth-crossing asteroid would be useful to avert a threatened collision, to utilize its resources, or for scientific investigations. Realizable launch opportunities to 1943 Anteros occur about every two years, and the 1987 and 1990 opportunities are being extensively studied. The mission craft would carry remote sensing instruments and obtain the shape, size, surface structure, rotation rate, axis of rotation and color differences of the asteroid. The chemical composition of the surface and the gravitational field would be studied. Although a free fall landing on the surface is feasible, a soft landing that takes account of the asteroid's gravity and rotation is desirable. In situ experiments would be accomplished with the aid of a penetrator fired from a tube on the mother spacecraft with the penetrator carrying an accelerometer, alpha-scattering device, water detector, magnetometer and seismometer.

NGC 6334-V - An infrared bipolar nebula

High angular resolution infrared mapping of the enigmatic far-infrared source NGC 6334-V shows it to have a bipolar structure at 1-4 microns. This structure together with the near-infrared colors and previous observations of H2 emission suggests a model for the source (IRS 4) in which a single luminous star is embedded in a dust cloud with a disklike geometry. Photometry of near-infrared sources within 0.5 pc of IRS 4 is also presented. These data suggest that there are at least four lower luminosity members of a young, dense cluster associated with the dominant source.
