IBIS - A geographic information system based on digital image processing and image raster datatype

IBIS (Image Based Information System) is a geographic information system which makes use of digital image processing techniques to interface existing geocoded data sets and information management systems with thematic maps and remotely sensed imagery. The basic premise is that geocoded data sets can be referenced to a raster scan that is equivalent to a grid cell data set. The first applications (St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and Los Angeles County) have been restricted to the design of a land resource inventory and analysis system. It is thought that the algorithms and the hardware interfaces developed will be readily applicable to other Landsat imagery.

Vector statistics of LANDSAT imagery

A digitized multispectral image, such as LANDSAT data, is composed of numerous four dimensional vectors, which quantitatively describe the ground scene from which the data are acquired. The statistics of unique vectors that occur in LANDSAT imagery are studied to determine if that information can provide some guidance on reducing image processing costs. A second purpose of this report is to investigate how the vector statistics are changed by various types of image processing techniques and determine if that information can be useful in choosing one processing approach over another.

Computer image processing in marine resource exploration

Pictographic data or imagery is commonly used in marine exploration. Pre-existing image processing techniques (software) similar to those used on imagery obtained from unmanned planetary exploration were used to improve marine photography and side-scan sonar imagery. Features and details not visible by conventional photo processing methods were enhanced by filtering and noise removal on selected deep-sea photographs. Information gained near the periphery of photographs allows improved interpretation and facilitates construction of bottom mosaics where overlapping frames are available. Similar processing techniques were applied to side-scan sonar imagery, including corrections for slant range distortion, and along-track scale changes. The use of digital data processing and storage techniques greatly extends the quantity of information that can be handled, stored, and processed.

On a correlation between surface remanent magnetism and chemistry for the lunar frontside and limbs

Image-processing techniques applied to orbital data have revealed an inverse correlation between lunar surface remanent magnetism and surface concentrations of Fe and Th on a scale of 250 km and greater. The effect can be understood in terms of the implantation of magnetism early in the history of the moon, coupled with the chronological sequence of highland-mare crustal differentiation. The exception seen at the Fra Mauro region suggests the presence of a source of magnetization sometime within 0.3-0.6 b.y. after formation of the moon.

Independent appraisal of the MSFC optical data reduction schemes

A few state-of-the-art optical image processing techniques are described and their potential applications to the ACPL experiments are suggested. The discussion also includes the selection of recording media in the present system and the enhancement of signal-to-noise ratio for the expected data from ACPL.

Processing of multispectral thermal IR data for geologic applications

Multispectral thermal IR data were acquired with a 24-channel scanner flown in an aircraft over the E. Tintic Utah mining district. These digital image data required extensive computer processing in order to put the information into a format useful for a geologic photointerpreter. Simple enhancement procedures were not sufficient to reveal the total information content because the data were highly correlated in all channels. The data were shown to be dominated by temperature variations across the scene, while the much more subtle spectral variations between the different rock types were of interest. The image processing techniques employed to analyze these data are described.

Satellite monitoring of sea surface pollution

The author has identified the following significant results. Image processing techniques developed are well adapted to the exploration and isolation of local areas which exhibit small temperature differences between themselves and their surroundings. In the worst case of imagery of small areal extent of sea surface having no coastal boundary in the area, there is yet no method of distinguishing unambiguously an oil spill from fog, cloud, the effect produced by shallow sediments, or the effects of naturally occuring thermal fronts. In the case of uniform slicks of liquid North Sea oil in still air, laboratory simulation experiments show that, for oil thicknesses in excess of 1 or 2 mm, there is, under equilibrium conditions, little dependence of oil surface temperature on the thickness of the oil layer. The surface temperature of oil is consistently higher than that of water, the difference being about 1 K at low values of relative humidity, but tending to increase as the relative humidity increases.

Application of imaging and ultrasound to the quality grading of beef

The results of a study conducted to assist the Department of Agriculture in the task of considering innovative methods for the grading of carcass beef for human consumption is presented. The processing of photographic, television and ultrasound images of the longissimus dorsi muscle at the 12/13th rib cut was undertaken. The results showed that a correlation could be developed between the quality grade of the carcass as determined by a professional grader, and the fat to area ratio of the muscle as determined by image processing techniques. In addition, the use of ultrasound shows the potential for grading of an unsliced carcass or a live animal.

Integration of Landsat, Seasat, and other geo-data sources

The paper discusses integration of Landsat, Seasat, and other geographic information sources. Mosaicking of radar data and registration of radar to Landsat digital imagery are described, and six types of geophysical data, including gravity and magnetic measurements, are integrated and analyzed using image processing techniques.

Surface mapping of selected regions in the Orion Nebula

Low dispersion, large aperture, ultraviolet spectra of selected regions in the Orion Nebula were obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) scientific instrument. Spectra obtained at 35 contiguous locations defining a mosaic within the nebula were used to generate monochromatic images of high spatial resolution at the wavelengths of the ultraviolet emission lines. Image processing techniques were utilized to generate and analyze these ultraviolet surface maps. The imagery at the three wavelengths studied shows definite differences in the spatial distribution of emission from the CII CIII and OII ions. Ways of using the imagery to determine ionization structure and C/O abundance ratios throughout the regions observed are developed, in addition to means of analyzing the extensive continuum measurements in terms of dust scattering characteristics.

Ultraviolet /UV/ emission line mapping of selected regions in the Orion Nebula

Digital processing of data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite are used to obtain monochromatic mosaic images of the most prominent UV spectra lines at 35 locations in the central region of the Orion Nebula. The image processing techniques include calculations of the spectrograph orientation and the thermal effects, normalization for exposure time, background subtraction, correction for sensitivity variation within the IUE spectrograph aperture, correction to an absolute flux scale, sample interpolation, and display on graphic devices. The resulting UV emission line intensity maps may be used in conjunction with observations of other wavelength regions to determine the spatial distribution of ionization and abundance levels of carbon and oxygen in Orion.

Fundamental studies of antimisting fuels

Research is currently being undertaken to determine the various physical characteristics of antimisting fuel. It is an endeavor to prevent post-crash fuel mist fires. The following studies were done: (1) drop and jet breakup studies using an image processing technique, (2) flammability of fuel mist under simulated plane crash conditions; (3) skin friction measurements; (4) determination of the tensile viscosity of non-Newtonian antimisting fuel as a function of the extensional rate; and (5) water compatibility measurements. The results indicate that the mechanism which prevents antimisting fuel breakup is related to the time-dependent tensile viscosity of antimisting fuel under stress. Drag reduction phenomenon was also observed at Reynolds numbers higher than 20,000. Uptake of water by the antimisting fuel is higher than that for the neat fuel. In addition, its rate of absorption depends on the concurrent degree of agitation.

Gates to Gregg High Voltage Transmission Line Study

The usefulness of LANDSAT data in the planning of transmission line routes was assessed. LANDSAT digital data and image processing techniques, specifically a multi-date supervised classification aproach, were used to develop a land cover map for an agricultural area near Fresno, California. Twenty-six land cover classes were identified, of which twenty classes were agricultural crops. High classification accuracies (greater than 80%) were attained for several classes, including cotton, grain, and vineyards. The primary products generated were 1:24,000, 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale maps of the classification and acreage summaries for all land cover classes within four alternate transmission line routes.

Experimental land observing data system feasibility study

An end-to-end data system to support a Shuttle-based Multispectral Linear Array (MLA) mission in the mid-1980's was defined. The experimental Land Observing System (ELOS) is discussed. A ground system that exploits extensive assets from the LANDSAT-D Program to effectively meet the objectives of the ELOS Mission was defined. The goal of 10 meter pixel precision, the variety of data acquisition capabilities, and the use of Shuttle are key to the mission requirements, Ground mission management functions are met through the use of GSFC's Multi-Satellite Operations Control Center (MSOCC). The MLA Image Generation Facility (MIGF) combines major hardware elements from the Applications Development Data System (ADDS) facility and LANDSAT Assessment System (LAS) with a special purpose MLA interface unit. LANDSAT-D image processing techniques, adapted to MLA characteristics, form the basis for the use of existing software and the definition of new software required.

STS-3 Snowflake study

Videotape recordings were made of particles observed being released from the orbiter and image processing techniques were used to reduce the data in order to obtain sources and sizes. Results show that a significant number of 1 mm to 1 cm diameter particles were in the vicinity of STS-3. Their origin may be near the aft end of the orbiter; however, 19 of the 33 examined trajectories show that the origin was definitely forward of the aft end of the bay. There may be larger particles near the aft end of the orbiter. Most particles move generally rearward with respect to the orbiter (+X direction).

Study of LANDSAT-D thematic mapper performance as applied to hydrocarbon exploration

Improved delineation of known oil and gas fields in southern Ontario and a spectacularly high amount of structural information on the Owl Creek, Wyoming scene were obtained from analysis of TM data. The use of hue, saturation, and value image processing techniques on a Death Valley, California scene permitted direct comparison of TM processed imagery with existing 1:250,000 scale geological maps of the area and revealed small outcrops of Tertiary volcanic material overlying Paleozoic sections. Analysis of TM data over Lawton, Oklahoma suggests that the reducing chemical environment associated with hydrocarbon seepage change ferric iron to soluble ferrous iron, allowing it to be leached. Results of the band selection algorithm show a suprising consistency, with the 1,4,5 combination selected as optimal in most cases.

Identifying environmental features for land management decisions

Multivariate statistical analysis and imaging processing techniques are being applied to the study of arid/semiarid environments, with emphasis on desertification. Field level indicators of land-soil biota degradation are being sifted out with staging up to the low aircraft reconnaissance level, to LANDSAT TM & MSS, and even to the AVHRR level. Three completed projects are reviewed: riparian habitat on the Humboldt River floodplain, Salt Lake County Urban expansion detection, and salinization/desertification detection in the delta area. Beginning projects summarized include: comparative condition of rangeland in Rush Valley; modeling a GIS/remote sensing data base for Cache County; universal soil loss equation applied to Pinyon-Juniper; relating MSS to ground radiometry near Battle Mountain; and riparian habitat mapping on Mary's River, Nevada.
