Software Development and Testing Support for the Avionics Systems Telemetry Tool Suite

The Customer Avionics Interface Development and Analysis (CAIDA) team provides modeling and simulation software for the verification of the Launch Control System (LCS). In late 2015, CAIDA began development of the Data Exchange Message (DEM) Generator (DEMGen) and development of the DEM Modifier (DEMMod) in early 2017. DEMGen is able to mimic the telemetry streams normally sent by different simulators allowing increased user control and more telemetry instances. DEMMod takes in a telemetry stream and allows the modification of entire packets or simple measurement values. Together, these tools provide the capabilities to simulate and test complex launch scenarios to ensure LCS is fully prepared for any anomalous behavior during an actual launch. In early 2018, CAIDA began a new project called the CAIDA Advanced Telemetry Tool (CATT), which combined the code and documentation of DEMGen and DEMMod. CATT now allows the integration of new tools into a singular program providing compact and easy access. In the fall of 2018, the author worked with another intern, Antonio Negron, to develop several new CATT features along with proper documentation and unit testing. In the following spring, the author continued that work by integrating the features into CATT, solidifying the documentation, and expanding the testing to cover more cases. The outcome of both semesters includes an inspection engine for automated packet analysis, a packet-masking feature, and a multi-measurement sequencing feature.

Comparison of ISS Power System Telemetry with Analytically Derived Data for Shadowed Cases

Accurate International Space Station (ISS) power prediction requires the quantification of solar array shadowing. Prior papers have discussed the NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) ISS power system tool SPACE (System Power Analysis for Capability Evaluation) and its integrated shadowing algorithms. On-orbit telemetry has become available that permits the correlation of theoretical shadowing predictions with actual data. This paper documents the comparison of a shadowing metric (total solar array current) as derived from SPACE predictions and on-orbit flight telemetry data for representative significant shadowing cases. Images from flight video recordings and the SPACE computer program graphical output are used to illustrate the comparison. The accuracy of the SPACE shadowing capability is demonstrated for the cases examined.

Design study of a HEAO-C spread spectrum transponder telemetry system for use with the TDRSS subnet

The results of a design study of a spread spectrum transponder for use on the HEAO-C satellite were given. The transponder performs the functions of code turn-around for ground range and range-rate determination, ground command receiver, and telemetry data transmitter. The spacecraft transponder and associated communication system components will allow the HEAO-C satellite to utilize the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) subnet of the post 1978 STDN. The following areas were discussed in the report: TDRSS Subnet Description, TDRSS-HEAO-C System Configuration, Gold Code Generator, Convolutional Encoder Design and Decoder Algorithm, High Speed Sequence Generators, Statistical Evaluation of Candidate Code Sequences using Amplitude and Phase Moments, Code and Carrier Phase Lock Loops, Total Spread Spectrum Transponder System, and Reference Literature Search.

RF Telemetry System for an Implantable Bio-MEMS Sensor

In this paper, a novel miniature inductor and a pick-up antenna for contact less powering and RF telemetry from implantable bio-MEMS sensors are presented. The design of the inductor and the pick-up antenna are discussed. In addition, the measured characteristics at the design frequency of 330 MHz have been shown.

The EURECA telecommanding chain: Experience with packet telecommand and telemetry systems

The European Retrieval Carrier (EURECA) was launched on its first flight on the 31st July 1992 by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. EURECA is characterized by several new on-board features, most notable Packet Telemetry and a partial implementation of Packet Telecommanding using an early version of the Command Operation Procedure (COP-1) protocol. EURECA has also very low contact time with its Ground Station, with a consequent high number of out-of-visibility onboard operations. This paper concentrates on the implementation and operational experience with the COP-1 Protocol and the effect the short ground contact time has on the design of the Commanding System. Another interesting feature is that the COP-1 is implemented at the control center rather than at the ground station. The COP-1 protocol also successfully supported the mission during the launch where commands were sent via NASCOM and the Shuttle.

International Space Station Power System Telemetry Compared With Analytically Derived Data for Shadowed Cases

This article highlights fiscal year 2002 work performed by NASA Glenn Research Center personnel to validate algorithms and data developed in-house to predict shadowing effects on the International Space Station (ISS) solar arrays power generation. The validation effort utilized video footage and on-orbit telemetry for cases spanning a 1-yr period. Validation was required because of the uncertainty of various aspects involved in shadowing analysis. Results show that a good comparison exists between actual and predicted shadowed power system performance for solar array front and backside shadowing.

The impact of NRZ data asymmetry on the performance of a space telemetry system

The author derives an expression for the power spectral density of an asymmetric nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) data stream. This formula is used to investigate how the data bandwidth varies with data asymmetry. The threshold levels of undesired spectral components that fall into the carrier tracking loop bandwidth are determined by examining the derived spectral density. Based on this formula, a simple technique is developed for the computation of bit signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation due to data asymmetry. The telemetry bit SNR degradations derived using this technique are compared with the results obtained previously by Simon et al. (1978) and with measurements by the electronic systems test laboratory (ESTL) at the Johnson Space Center.

Classification and Evaluation of Coherent Synchronous Sampled-Data Telemetry Systems

This paper analyzes the various types of continuous wave and pulse modulation for the transmission of sampled data over channels perturbed by white gaussian noise. Optimal coherent synchronous detection schemes for all the different modulation methods are shown to belong to one of two general classes: linear synchronous detection and correlation detection. The figures of merit, mean-square signal-to-error ratio and bandwidth occupancy, are determined for each system and compared.

Digital telemetry system eliminates data redundancy

Floating aperature, zero-order predictor /ZOP/ circuit eliminates telemetered data redundancy by examining data from each sensor before it is multiplexed and transmitted. Digital devices to implement design are off-the-shelf items such as gates, registers and flip-flops, which are readily amenable to large-scale integration techniques.
