Development of Ternary Transition Metal Oxide Catalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Electrochemical water splitting, a promising method for green hydrogen production, is currently hindered by the high cost of precious-group metal (PGM)-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This study addresses this challenge by advancing the development of catalysts for OER, focusing on the development of high-performance PGM-free catalysts using nickel-iron-cobalt (NiFeCo)-based aerogels. The catalysts were synthesized via a sol-gel method and critical point drying to achieve a highly porous structure with an exceptionally high surface area. The designed catalyst structure provides an ideal platform for maximizing catalytic active sites and enhancing mass transport kinetics. Co has been systematically incorporated into the current PGM-free state-of-the-art, NiFeOx catalyst, and the metal ratios have been optimized. In addition to the experimental studies, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the material’s properties of this ternary catalyst and the effect of Co addition on enhancing OER catalysis.

Phase Heterogeneity in Cholesterol-Containing Ternary Phospholipid Lamellar Phases

Pseudo-ternary mixtures of lamellar phase phospholipids (DPPC and brain sphingomyelin with cholesterol) were studied below T m while comparing the influence of cholesterol content, temperature, and the presence of small quantities of vitamin D binding protein (DBP) or vitamin D receptor (VDR). The measurements, conducted by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cover a range of cholesterol concentrations (20% mol. wt to 40% mol. wt.) and physiologically relevant temperature range (294–314 K). In addition to rich intraphase behavior, data and modeling are used to approximate the lipids’ headgroup location variations under the abovementioned experimental conditions.

Unveiling a Family of Dimerized Quantum Magnets, Conventional Antiferromagnets, and Nonmagnets in Ternary Metal Borides

Dimerized quantum magnets are exotic crystalline materials where Bose–Einstein condensation of magnetic excitations can happen. However, known dimerized quantum magnets are limited to only a few oxides and halides. Here, we unveil 9 dimerized quantum magnets and 11 conventional antiferromagnets in ternary metal borides MTB 4 (M = Sc, Y, La, Ce, Lu, Mg, Ca, and Al; T = V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni), where T atoms are arranged in structural dimers. Quantum magnetism in these compounds is dominated by strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr (Cr and Mn for M = Mg and Ca) atoms within the dimers, with much weaker interactions between the dimers. These systems are proposed to be close to a quantum critical point between a disordered singlet spin-dimer phase, with a spin gap, and the ordered conventional Néel AFM phase. They greatly enrich the materials inventory that allows investigations of the spin-gap phase. Conventional antiferromagnetism in these compounds is dominated by ferromagnetic Mn (Fe for M = Mg and Ca) interactions within the dimers. The predicted stable and nonmagnetic (NM) YFeB 4 phase is synthesized and characterized, providing a scarce candidate to study Fe dimers and Fe ladders in borides. The identified quantum, conventional, and NM systems provide a platform with abundant possibilities to tune the magnetic exchange coupling by doping and study the unconventional quantum phase transition and conventional magnetic transitions. Finally, this work opens new avenues for studying novel magnetism in borides arising from spin dimers and establishes a theoretical workflow for future searches for dimerized quantum magnets in other families of materials.

Coupling Amorphization and Compositional Optimization of Ternary Metal Phosphides toward High-Performance Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Amorphous materials, with abundant active sites and unique electronic configurations, have the potential to outperform their crystalline counterparts in high-performance catalysis for clean energy. However, their synthesis and compositional optimization remain underexplored due to the strict conditions required for their formation. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of ternary platinum-nickel-phosphorus (PtNiP) amorphous nanoparticles (ANPs) within milliseconds by flash Joule heating, which features ultrafast cooling that enables the vitrification of metal precursors. Through compositional optimization, the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption for Pt 4 Ni 4 P 1 ANPs is optimized at 0.02 eV, an almost ideal value, even surpassing that of the benchmark metallic platinum catalyst. As a result, the PtNiP ANPs exhibited superior activity in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acid electrolyte (η 10 ∼ 14 mV, Tafel slope ∼ 18 mV dec –1 , and mass activity 5× higher than state-of-the-art Pt/C). Life-cycle assessment and technoeconomic analysis suggest that, compared to existing processes, our approach enables notable reductions in greenhouse gas emission, energy consumption, and production cost for practical electrolyzer catalyst manufacturing.

Ternary aromatic and anti-aromatic clusters derived from the hypho species [Sn 2 Sb 5 ] 3-

Heterometallic clusters have attracted broad interests in the synthetic chemistry due to their various coordination modes and potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis. Here we report the synthesis, experimental, and theoretical characterizations of four ternary clusters ([M 2 (CO) 6 Sn 2 Sb 5 ] 3- (M = Cr, Mo), and [(MSn 2 Sb 5 ) 2 ] 4- , (M = Cu, Ag)) in the process of capturing the hypho - [Sn 2 Sb 5 ] 3- in ethylenediamine (en) solution. We show that the coordination of the binary anion to transition-metal ions or fragments provides additional stabilization due to the formation of locally σ-aromatic units, producing a spherical aromatic shielding region in the cages. While in the case of [Mo 2 (CO) 6 Sn 2 Sb 5 ] 3- stabilization arises from locally σ-aromatic three-centre and five-centre two-electron bonds, aromatic islands in [(AgSn 2 Sb 5 ) 2 ] 4- and [(CuSn 2 Sb 5 ) 2 ] 4- render them globally antiaromatic. This work describes the coordination chemistry of the versatile building block [Sn 2 Sb 5 ] 3- , thus providing conceptual advances in the field of metal-metal bonding in clusters.

An open database of computed bulk ternary transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract We present a dataset of structural relaxations of bulk ternary transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) computed via plane-wave density functional theory (DFT). We examined combinations of up to two chalcogenides with seven transition metals from groups 4–6 in octahedral (1T) or trigonal prismatic (2H) coordination. The full dataset consists of 672 unique stoichiometries, with a total of 50,337 individual configurations generated during structural relaxation. Our motivations for building this dataset are (1) to develop a training set for the generation of machine and deep learning models and (2) to obtain structural minima over a range of stoichiometries to support future electronic analyses. We provide the dataset as individual VASP xml files as well as all configurations encountered during relaxations collated into an ASE database with the corresponding total energy and atomic forces. In this report, we discuss the dataset in more detail and highlight interesting structural and electronic features of the relaxed structures.

High-throughput investigation of crystal-to-glass transformation of Ti–Ni–Cu ternary alloy

A high-throughput investigation of metallic glass formation via solid-state reaction was reported in this paper. Combinatorial multilayered thin-film chips covering the entire Ti-Ni-Cu ternary system were prepared using ion beam sputtering technique. Microbeam synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measurements were conducted, with 1,325 data points collected from each chip, to map out the composition and the phase constitution before and after annealing at 373 K for 110 hours. The composition dependence of the crystal-to-glass transition by solid-state reaction was surveyed using this approach. The resulting composition-phase map is consistent with previously reported results. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) was performed on the representative compositions to determine the inter-diffusion between layers, the result shows that the diffusion of Ti is the key factor for the crystal-to-glass transition. In addition, both layer thickness and layer sequence play important roles as well. This work demonstrates that combinatorial chip technique is an efficient way for systematic and rapid study of crystal-to-glass transition for multi-component alloy systems.

Using resonant energy X-ray diffraction to extract chemical order parameters in ternary semiconductors

II–IV–V 2 materials, ternary analogs to III–V materials, are emerging for their potential applications in devices such as LEDs and solar cells. Controlling cation ordering in II–IV–V 2 materials offers the potential to tune properties at nearly fixed compositions and lattice parameters. While tuning properties at a fixed lattice constant through ordering has the potential to be a powerful tool used in device fabrication, cation ordering also creates challenges with characterization and quantification of ordering. In this work, we investigate two different methods to quantify cation ordering in ZnGeP 2 thin films: a stretching parameter calculated from lattice constants , and an order parameter determined from the cation site occupancies ( S ). We use high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) to determine and resonant energy X-ray diffraction (REXD) to extract S . REXD is critical to distinguish between elements with similar Z -number ( e.g. Zn and Ge). We found that samples with a corresponding to the ordered chalcopyrite structure had only partially ordered S values. The optical absorption onset for these films occurred at lower energy than expected for fully ordered ZnGeP 2 , indicating that S is a more accurate descriptor of cation order than the stretching parameter. Since disorder is complex and can occur on many length scales, metrics for quantifying disorder should be chosen that most accurately reflect the physical properties of interest.

Conjugated polyelectrolyte-based ternary exciton funnels via liposome scaffolds

There is great interest in developing inexpensive, molecular light-harvesting systems capable of efficiently converting photon energy to chemical potential energy. It is highly desirable to do so using self-assembly and in a manner that supports environmentally benign processing. A critical consideration in any such assembly is the ability to absorb a substantial fraction of the solar emission spectrum and to be able to efficiently move excited states through the space to a functional interface. We have previously shown that aqueous inter-conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) complexes can act as ultrafast and efficient energy-transfer antennae. Here we demonstrate formation of a hierarchically assembled, aqueous system based on an inter-CPE exciton donor/acceptor network and a lipid vesicle scaffold. Using a model small-molecule organic semiconductor embedded in the vesicle membrane, we form a ternary exciton funnel that is oriented towards the membrane interior. We show that, although energy transfer is efficient, the assembly morphology depends sensitively on preparation conditions and relative ionic stoichiometry. We propose several approaches towards stabilizing such aqueous assemblies. Furthermore, this work highlights a path to formation of an aqueous, panchromatic light-harvesting system, whose functional complexity can be systematically increased with modularity.

Quantitative relationships between film morphology, charge carrier dynamics, and photovoltaic performance in bulk-heterojunction binary vs. ternary acceptor blends

Addressing pertinent and perplexing questions regarding why nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) promote higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) than traditional fullerenes and how photoactive bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film morphology, charge photogeneration, and recombination dynamics dictate solar cell performance have stimulated many studies of polymer solar cells (PSCs), yet quantitative relationships remain limited. Better understanding in these areas offers the potential to advance materials design and device engineering, afford higher PCEs, and ultimate commercialization. Here we probe quantitative relationships between BHJ film morphology, charge carrier dynamics, and photovoltaic performance in model binary and ternary blend systems having a wide bandgap donor polymer, a fullerene, and a promising NFA. We show that optimal PC 71 BM incorporation in a PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th binary system matrix retains the original π-face-on orientation, ITIC-Th crystallinity and BHJ film crystallite dimensions, and reduces film upper surface ITIC-Th segregation. Such morphology changes together simultaneously increase hole (μ h ) and electron (μ e ) mobilities, facilitate light-activated ITIC-Th to PC 71 BM domain electron delocalization, reduce free charge carrier (FC) bimolecular recombination (BR) within PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th mixed regions, and increase FC extraction pathways viaPBDB-TF:PC 71 BM pairs. The interplay of these effects yields significantly enhanced inverted cell short-circuit current density (J SC ), fill factor (FF), and PCE. Unexpectedly, we also find that excessive PC 71 BM in the PBDB-TF:ITIC-Th binary system alters the PBDB-TF orientation to π-edge-on, increases large scale PC 71 BM-rich aggregations and BHJ upper surface PC 71 BM composition. Further, these morphology changes increase parasitic decay processes such as intersystem crossing from photoexcited PC 71 BM, compromising the J SC , FF, and PCE metrics. ITIC-Th X-ray diffraction reveals a unique sidechain-dominated molecular network with previously unknown sidechain-end group stacking, rationalizing the STEM and GIWAXS results, photophysics, and the high μ e . DFT computation reveals charge transfer networks within ITIC-Th crystallites, supporting excited-state electron delocalization from ITIC-Th to PC 71 BM. This structure–property understanding leads to a newly reported NFA blend with PCE near 17%.

Towards a mechanistic understanding of the sol–gel syntheses of ternary carbides

Sol–gel chemistry, while being extremely established, is to this day not fully understood, and much of the underlying chemistry and mechanisms are yet to be unraveled. Here, in this work, we elaborate on the sol–gel chemistry of Cr 2 GaC, the first layered ternary carbide belonging to the MAX phase family to ever be synthesized using this wet chemical approach. Leveraging a variety of both in- and ex situ characterization techniques, including X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure analyses, total scattering analyses, and differential scanning calorimetry coupled with mass spectrometry, in-depth analyses of the local structures and reaction pathways are elucidated. While the metals first form tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated oxidic structures, that subsequently grow and crystallize into oxides, the carbon source citric acid sits on a separate reaction pathway, that does not merge with the metals until the very end. In fact, after decomposing it remains nanostructured and disordered graphite until the temperature allows for the reduction of the metal oxides into the layered carbide. Based on this, we hypothesize that the method is mostly applicable to systems where the needed metals are reducible by graphite around the formation temperature of the target phase.

Locking water molecules via ternary O–H⋯O intramolecular hydrogen bonds in perhydroxylated closo -dodecaborate

A multitude of applications related to perhydroxylated closo-dodecaborate B 12 (OH) 12 2− in the condensed phase are inseparable from the fundamental mechanisms underlying the high water orientation selectivity based on the base B 12 (OH) 12 2− . Herein, we directly compare the structural evolution of water clusters, ranging from monomer to hexamer, oriented by functional groups in the bases B 12 H 12 2− , B 12 H 11 OH 2− and B 12 (OH) 12 2− using multiple theoretical methods. A significant revelation is made regarding B 12 (OH) 12 2− : each additional water molecule is locked into the intramolecular hydrogen bond B–O–H ternary ring in an embedded form. This new pattern of water cluster growth suggests that B–(H–O)⋯H–O interactions prevail over the competition from water–hydrogen bonds (O⋯H–O), distinguishing it from the behavior observed in B 12 H 12 2− and B 12 H 11 OH 2− bases, in which competition arises from a mixed competing model involving dihydrogen bonds (B–H⋯H–O), conventional hydrogen bonds (B–(H–O)⋯H–O) and water hydrogen bonds (O⋯H–O). Through aqueous solvation and ab initio molecular dynamics analysis, we further demonstrate the largest water clusters in the first hydrated shell with exceptional thermodynamic stability around B 12 (OH) 12 2− . These findings provide a solid scientific foundation for the design of boron cluster chemistry incorporating hydroxyl-group-modified borate salts with potential implications for various applications.

High throughput discovery of ternary Cu-Fe-Ru alloy catalysts for photo-driven hydrogen production

Light driven hydrogen production from the water splitting reaction has the ability to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in a green energy future. Here, we highlight the discovery of Cu x Ru y Fe 1-x-y nanoparticle catalysts for photo-driven hydrogen production. Through a high throughput experimental setup, robust data management pipelines and intentional experimental design, this study uncovered three highly active bimetallic systems for photo-driven hydrogen and identified a new trimetallic catalyst for this system. In most cases, the multimetallic catalysts outperformed the monometallics. Furthermore, this study highlights the expansive catalytic screening capabilities of this system in contrast to traditional catalytic selection processes through the discovery of distributions of particle compositions in binary and ternary mixtures of metals with high activity for hydrogen evolution.

Size-controlled synthesis of ultrasmall Cu 3 VS 4 nanocrystals via direct ternary nucleation

Here, we report the size-controlled synthesis of ultrasmall (3–8 nm), phase-pure, and stoichiometric Cu 3 VS 4 nanocrystals via direct nucleation of the ternary sulvanite phase. An unusual redshift in optical absorption is observed with decreasing size and attributed to the plasmonic-like nature of valence band–intermediate band transitions.
