Public data from three US states provide new insights into well integrity

Significance There are over 900,000 active oil and gas wells in the United States. Estimates of the percentage of these wells that leak during their lifetime have been limited by data availability. We mined publicly available records from state regulatory databases and synthesized the results of various well testing methods into a uniform dataset that describes the integrity of 105,031 wells. Our analysis of the dataset provides insight into regional well leakage frequencies in three US states (Colorado, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania), spatial and temporal leakage trends among vertical and directional wells, and the characteristics of leaked fluids. Our findings demonstrate the value of statewide well testing programs and highlight the challenges of interpreting disparate interjurisdictional well testing data.

New Developments and Applications of Superheated Emulsions: Warhead Verification and Special Nuclear Material Interdiction

In recent years, neutron detection with superheated emulsions has received renewed attention thanks to improved detector manufacturing and read-out techniques, and thanks to successful applications in warhead verification and special nuclear material (SNM) interdiction. Detectors are currently manufactured with methods allowing high uniformity of the drop sizes, which in turn allows the use of optical read-out techniques based on dynamic light scattering. Furthermore, small detector cartridges arranged in 2D matrices are developed for the verification of a declared warhead without revealing its design. For this application, the enabling features of the emulsions are that bubbles formed at different times cannot be distinguished from each other, while the passive nature of the detectors avoids the susceptibility to electronic snooping and tampering. Large modules of emulsions are developed to detect the presence of shielded special nuclear materials hidden in cargo containers ‘interrogated’ with high energy X-rays. In this case, the enabling features of the emulsions are photon discrimination, a neutron detection threshold close to 3 MeV and a rate-insensitive read-out.

Field Experience Detecting PV Underperformance in Real Time Using Existing Instrumentation

Maintenance at large-scale photovoltaic plants employs a mix of preventative and corrective maintenance practices. Large outages, such as an inverter tripping offline, are often easy to detect. More subtle sub-inverter faults and failures can accumulate and go unnoticed for months or years. A software-based fault detection method has been developed to analyze commonly measured data from large-scale PV plants for more timely detection of subtle underperformance. The method has been demonstrated on eight datasets from large-scale plants with high accuracy of detection. Results are validated using aerial infrared scanning. String outages are detected with a true positive rate of 73 percent and tracker issues are detected with a true positive rate of 88 percent. The developed method can be uniformly applied to photovoltaic plants across a range of scales and configurations to assess performance, quickly detect underperformance, and determine the source and location of failures. The results inform and improve operations and maintenance at PV plants, ultimately aiding in improved affordability, reliability, availability, and resiliency of solar electricity.

High-throughput homogenization of a quasi-Gaussian ultrafast laser beam using a combined refractive beam shaper and spatial light modulator

Efficiently shaping femtosecond, transverse Gaussian laser beams to flat-top beams with flat wavefronts is critical for large-scale material processing and manufacturing. Existing beam shaping devices fall short either in final beam homogeneity or efficiency. Here, we present an approach that uses refractive optics to perform the majority of the beam shaping and then uses a fine-tune device (spatial light modulator) to refine the intensity profile. For the beam that we selected, circularly asymmetric with intensity fluctuations, our method achieved a uniformity of 0.055 within 90% of the beam area at 92% efficiency. The optimization involved an iterative beam shaping process that converged to optimum within 10 iterations.

Spectral Peak Enhancement by Combining Trusted Response Elements via Machine Learning (SPECTRE-ML) v0.8.0

SPECTRE-ML (Spectral Peak Enhancement by Combining Trusted Response Elements via Machine Learning) is a machine learning based program for finding optimal clusters of radiation detector segments (i.e., pixels or voxels) in order to improve spectral performance. It provides facilities for pre-processing and analyzing training datasets, running ML algorithms, and evaluating and visualizing outputs. SPECTRE-ML outperforms simpler ad-hoc segmentation methods such as uniform depth clusters, learning detector performance trends such as dead layers, edge effects, and gain shifts. Although extensible to arbitrary highly-segmented spectroscopic radiation detectors, SPECTRE-ML currently focuses on improving spectral performance in highly-segmented CdZnTe (CZT) detectors for International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) non-destructive assay (NDA) safeguards tasks.

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria User Manual (V.4.44)

Aria is a Galerkin finite element based program for solving coupled-physics problems described by systems of PDEs and is capable of solving nonlinear, implicit, transient and direct-to-steady state problems in two and three dimensions on parallel architectures. The suite of physics currently supported by Aria includes thermal energy transport, species transport, and electrostatics as well as generalized scalar, vector and tensor transport equations. Additionally, Aria includes support for manufacturing process flows via the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations specialized to a low Reynolds number ( %3C 1 ) regime. Enhanced modeling support of manufacturing processing is made possible through use of either arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian (ALE) and level set based free and moving boundary tracking in conjunction with quasi-static nonlinear elastic solid mechanics for mesh control. Coupled physics problems are solved in several ways including fully-coupled Newton's method with analytic or numerical sensitivities, fully-coupled Newton- Krylov methods and a loosely-coupled nonlinear iteration about subsets of the system that are solved using combinations of the aforementioned methods. Error estimation, uniform and dynamic h -adaptivity and dynamic load balancing are some of Aria's more advanced capabilities. Aria is based upon the Sierra Framework.
