Microsphere Integration in Active and Passive Photonics Devices

An important step towards integration of microspheres in compact functional photonics devices, we demonstrate direct efficient coupling of light in and out of high-Q whispering-gallery (WG) modes in silica microspheres using angle-polished single mode fibers.

4. Parallels in Communication and Navigation Technology and Natural Phenomenon

This chapter represents an introspective search for hidden connections between technology and nature and inadvertent influence on biomimicry – especially as it pertains to links to electromagnetics in navigation and communication systems. Several devices, phenomena, and approaches to problem solving are considered and an attempt is made to identify linkages between experiences, observables and the way we think about and create new technology.

Improved Performance of a Temperature Compensated LN2 Cooled Sapphire Oscillator

We report on improved stability in a whispering gallery sapphire resonator for which the dominant WGHn11 microwave mode family shows frequency-stable, compensated operation for temperatures above 77K. Several modifications during the past year have led to significant improvements in performance. Current tests with improved thermal stability provide Allan Deviation of frequency of 2.6 - 4 ? 10-13 for measurement times of 1#t#100 seconds. We project a frequency stability of 1014 for this resonator with stabilized housing temperature and with a mode Q of 107.!.

Measurement and analysis of a microwave oscillator stabilized by a sapphire dielectric ring resonator for ultra-low noise

Phase-noise measurements are presented for a microwave oscillator whose frequency is stabilized by a whispering-gallery sapphire ring resonator with Q of 200,000. This mode involves little metallic conduction and allows nearly full use of the very low dielectric loss in sapphire. Several mode families have been identified, in good agreement with frequency calculations. For a 5-cm wheel resonator in a 7.6-cm container, Q values above 100,000 were found at room temperature for all of the modes in this sequence. Coupling Q-values for these same modes ranged from 10,000 (n = 5) to 100,000 (n = 10) for a WR112 waveguide port at the center of the cylinder wall of the containing can. Phase noise measurements for a transistor oscillator locked to the n = 10 (7.84-GHz) mode showed a 1/f cubed dependence for low offset frequencies, and a value of L(f) = -55 dB/Hz at an offset of 10 Hz from the carrier.

Temperature Compensated Sapphire Resonator for Ultra-Stable Oscillator Capability at Temperatures Above 77 Kelvin

We report on the design and test of a whispering gallery sapphire resonator for which the dominant (WGH xxxsubn11) microwave mode family shows frequency-stable, compensated operation for temperatures above 77 Kelvin. The resonator makes possible a new ultra-stable oscillator (USO) capability that promises performance improvements over the best available crystal quartz oscillators in a compact cryogenic package. A mechanical compensation mechanism, enabled by the difference between copper and sapphire expansion coefficients, tunes the resonator to cancel the temperature variation of sapphire's dielectric constant.

Frequency Stability of 1x10(sup -13) in a Compensated Sapphire Oscillator Operating Above 77K

We report on the design and test of a whispering gallery sapphire resonator for which the dominant (WGH (sub n11) ) microwave mode family shows frequency-stable, compensated operation for temperatures above 77 kelvin. The resonator makes possible a new ultra-stable oscillator (USO) capability that promises performance improvements over the best available crystal quartz oscillators in a compact cryogenic package.

Phase-Array Approach to Optical Whispering Gallery Modulators

This technology leverages the well-defined orbital number of a whispering gallery modulator (WGM) to expand the range of applications for such resonators. This property rigidly connects the phase variation of the field in this mode with the azimuthal angle between the coupling locations. A WGM with orbital momentum L has exactly L instant nodes around the circumference of the WGM resonator supporting such a mode. Therefore, in two locations separated by the arc alpha, the phase difference of such a field will be equal to phi= alpha L. Coupling the field out of such locations, and into a balanced interferometer, once can observe a complete constructive or distractive interference (or have any situation in between) depending on the angle alpha. Similarly, a mode L + delta L will pick up the phase phi + alpha delta L. In all applications of a WGM resonator as a modulator, the orbital numbers for the carrier and sidebands are different, and their differences delta L are known (usually, but not necessarily, delta L = 1). Therefore, the choice of the angle alpha, and of the interferometer arms difference, allows one to control the relative phase between different modes and to perform the conversion, separation, and filtering tasks necessary.
