Integrated controls-structures design - A practical design tool for modern spacecraft

An integrated controls-structures design approach is developed for a class of flexible spacecraft. The integrated design problem is posed in the form of simultaneous optimization of both the structural and the control design variables. The approach is demonstrated by application to the integrated design of a geostationary platform and to a ground-based flexible structure experiment. The numerical results obtained indicate that the integrated design approach can yield spacecraft designs that have substantially superior performance over the conventional design approach wherein the structural design and control design are performed sequentially.

Altering apparent optical properties with an array of semitransparent mesoscale structures

The ability to control and optimize interactions between light and matter has much utility in engineering design. A well-researched way to achieve optical property modulation is via the use of optical metamaterials, which feature sub-wavelength scale surface structures. In this work, an alternative approach for modulating optical properties is presented using a composite surface modified with a periodic array of semitransparent hemispherical shell mesoscale structures which are larger than the incident light wavelength. A ray-tracing simulation approach is used to predict the optical behavior for an arrayed surface. At oblique angles of incidence, significant increases and decreases in apparent absorptance are achieved via the use of optically thick and thin shells, respectively. Additionally, a potential application to solar cells is described with optimal spectral behavior achieved via the use of semitransparent external structures.

Optimization of the Growth Technology for Crystals with Garnet Structure Based on X-Ray Diffraction Data

High efficiency of the methods of double-crystal X-ray diffractometry (DCXRD) and topography for improving the growth technology of highly homogeneous crystals has been demonstrated on the example of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) single crystals. The main types of structural defects observed in Czochralski-grown GGG crystals are found to be macroscopic inhomogeneity of composition distribution, caused by the facet effect manifestation; microinhomogeneous distribution of impurity and main components of the composition in striations; dislocations; and second-phase inclusions. The relationship between the type and density of newly formed defects and the technological conditions for crystal growth are considered. Optimization of the composition of crystals and their growth technology made it possible to obtain high-quality dislocation-free crystals of GGG and complex-substituted garnets on its basis for magneto-optical and microwave devices, elements of solid-state lasers, and other applications.

Multidisciplinary concurrent optimization framework for multi-phase building design process

Modern day building design projects require multidisciplinary expertise from architects and engineers across various phases of the design (conceptual, preliminary, and detailed) and construction processes. The Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) community has recently shifted gears toward leveraging design optimization techniques to make well-informed decisions in the design of buildings. However, most of the building design optimization efforts are either multidisciplinary optimization confined to just a specific design phase (conceptual/preliminary/detailed) or single disciplinary optimization (structural/thermal/daylighting/energy) spanning across multiple phases. Complexity in changing the optimization setup as the design progresses through subsequent phases, interoperability issues between modeling and physics-based analysis tools used at later stages, and the lack of an appropriate level of design detail to get meaningful results from these sophisticated analysis tools are few challenges that limit multi-phase multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) in the AEC field. Here this paper proposes a computational building design platform leveraging concurrent engineering techniques such as interactive problem structuring, simulation-based optimization using meta models for energy and daylighting (machine learning based) and tradespace visualization. The proposed multi-phase concurrent MDO framework is demonstrated by using it to design and optimize a sample office building for energy and daylighting objectives across multiple phases. Furthermore, limitations of the proposed framework and future avenues of research are listed.

Model correlation and damage location for large space truss structures: Secant method development and evaluation

On-orbit testing of a large space structure will be required to complete the certification of any mathematical model for the structure dynamic response. The process of establishing a mathematical model that matches measured structure response is referred to as model correlation. Most model correlation approaches have an identification technique to determine structural characteristics from the measurements of the structure response. This problem is approached with one particular class of identification techniques - matrix adjustment methods - which use measured data to produce an optimal update of the structure property matrix, often the stiffness matrix. New methods were developed for identification to handle problems of the size and complexity expected for large space structures. Further development and refinement of these secant-method identification algorithms were undertaken. Also, evaluation of these techniques is an approach for model correlation and damage location was initiated.

Conceptual Design and Structural Analysis of an Open Rotor Hybrid Wing Body Aircraft

Through a recent NASA contract, Boeing Research and Technology in Huntington Beach, CA developed and optimized a conceptual design of an open rotor hybrid wing body aircraft (HWB). Open rotor engines offer a significant potential for fuel burn savings over turbofan engines, while the HWB configuration potentially allows to offset noise penalties through possible engine shielding. Researchers at NASA Langley converted the Boeing design to a FLOPS model which will be used to develop take-off and landing trajectories for community noise analyses. The FLOPS model was calibrated using Boeing data and shows good agreement with the original Boeing design. To complement Boeing s detailed aerodynamics and propulsion airframe integration work, a newly developed and validated conceptual structural analysis and optimization tool was used for a conceptual loads analysis and structural weights estimate. Structural optimization and weight calculation are based on a Nastran finite element model of the primary HWB structure, featuring centerbody, mid section, outboard wing, and aft body. Results for flight loads, deformations, wing weight, and centerbody weight are presented and compared to Boeing and FLOPS analyses.

Discovery of 3-Cyano- N -(3-(1-isobutyrylpiperidin-4-yl)-1-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1 H -pyrrolo[2,3- b ]pyridin-5-yl)benzamide: A Potent, Selective, and Orally Bioavailable Retinoic Acid Receptor-Related Orphan Receptor C2 Inverse Agonist

The nuclear hormone receptor retinoic acid receptor-related orphan C2 (RORC2, also known as RORγt) is a promising target for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. A small molecule, inverse agonist of the receptor is anticipated to reduce production of IL-17, a key proinflammatory cytokine. Through a high-throughput screening approach, we identified a molecule displaying promising binding affinity for RORC2, inhibition of IL-17 production in Th17 cells, and selectivity against the related RORA and RORB receptor isoforms. Lead optimization to improve the potency and metabolic stability of this hit focused on two key design strategies, namely, iterative optimization driven by increasing lipophilic efficiency and structure-guided conformational restriction to achieve optimal ground state energetics and maximize receptor residence time. This approach successfully identified 3-cyano-N-(3-(1-isobutyrylpiperidin-4-yl)-1-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-5-yl)benzamide as a potent and selective RORC2 inverse agonist, demonstrating good metabolic stability, oral bioavailability, and the ability to reduce IL-17 levels and skin inflammation in a preclinical in vivo animal model upon oral administration.

The Enzymatic and Structural Basis for Inhibition of Echinococcus granulosus Thioredoxin Glutathione Reductase by Gold(I)

Aims: New drugs are needed to treat flatworm infections that cause severe human diseases such as schistosomiasis. The unique flatworm enzyme thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR), structurally different from the human enzyme, is a key drug target. Structural studies of the flatworm Echinococcus granulosus TGR, free and complexed with AuI-MPO, a novel gold inhibitor, together with inhibition assays were performed. Results: AuI-MPO is a potent TGR inhibitor that achieves 75% inhibition at a 1:1 TGR:Au ratio and efficiently kills E. granulosus in vitro. The structures revealed salient insights: (i) unique monomer–monomer interactions, (ii) distinct binding sites for thioredoxin and the glutaredoxin (Grx) domain, (iii) a single glutathione disulfide reduction site in the Grx domain, (iv) rotation of the Grx domain toward the Sec-containing redox active site, and (v) a single gold atom bound to Cys519 and Cys573 in the AuI-TGR complex. Structural modeling suggests that these residues are involved in the stabilization of the Sec-containing C-terminus. Consistently, Cys→Ser mutations in these residues decreased TGR activities. Mass spectroscopy confirmed these cysteines are the primary binding site. Innovation: The identification of a primary site for gold binding and the structural model provide a basis for gold compound optimization through scaffold adjustments. Conclusions: The structural study revealed that TGR functions are achieved not only through a mobile Sec-containing redox center but also by rotation of the Grx domain and distinct binding sites for Grx domain and thioredoxin. The conserved Cys519 and Cys573 residues targeted by gold assist catalysis through stabilization of the Sec-containing redox center. Antioxid. Redox Signal. 27, 1491–1504.

A new multirate sampled-data control law structure and synthesis algorithm

A new multirate sampled-data control law structure is defined and a new parameter-optimization-based synthesis algorithm for that structure is introduced. The synthesis algorithm can be applied to multirate, multiple-input multiple-output, sampled-data control laws having a prescribed dynamic order and structure, and a priori specified sampling/update rates for all sensors, processor states, and control inputs. The synthesis algorithm is applied to design two-input, two-output tip position controllers of various dynamic orders for a sixth-order, two-link robot arm model.

SNoGloDe: A Structured Nonlinear Global Decomposition Solver

Large-scale optimization problems often require decomposition strategies and customized algorithms to achieve optimal solutions within a reasonable time. Building on the work of Cao and Zavala (2019) for solving nonlinear two-stage stochastic programs to global optimality, we implement and extend their approach. We generalize to optimization problems reformulated with a block-angular constraint structure (e.g., temporal decomposition). Our framework, written in Python using Pyomo, is highly customizable and enables parallel execution of the decomposition. SNoGloDe allows tailored branching strategies, lower bounding problems, and candidate generators to leverage problem-specific knowledge. To demonstrate effectiveness, we compare SNoGloDe’s performance with Gurobi on a temporally decomposed produced water case study.

Algorithms in Diffraction Profile Analysis

This chapter introduces several approaches to crystallographic structure refinement from diffraction profile data including the Rietveld method, global optimization methods, and Bayesian modeling. First, the Rietveld method and related nonlinear least squares approaches to analyzing diffraction profiles are briefly discussed. We then review the most common algorithms within global optimization as alternative methods of structure solution: grid search, simulated annealing, and genetic algorithms. As the Rietveld method is the standard tool for analyzing diffraction profile data, we catalogue its challenges and limitations. A Bayesian approach to diffraction profile analysis is presented as an alternative, along with several sampling algorithms including Gibbs sampling, variants of Metropolis sampling, Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, and approximate Bayesian computing. These sampling algorithms are applied to the fitting of a neutron diffraction profile from a National Institute of Standards and Technology silicon standard reference material, and their results are compared.

Optimum testing of multiple hypotheses in quantum detection theory

The problem of specifying the optimum quantum detector in multiple hypotheses testing is considered for application to optical communications. The quantum digital detection problem is formulated as a linear programming problem on an infinite-dimensional space. A necessary and sufficient condition is derived by the application of a general duality theorem specifying the optimum detector in terms of a set of linear operator equations and inequalities. Existence of the optimum quantum detector is also established. The optimality of commuting detection operators is discussed in some examples. The structure and performance of the optimal receiver are derived for the quantum detection of narrow-band coherent orthogonal and simplex signals. It is shown that modal photon counting is asymptotically optimum in the limit of a large signaling alphabet and that the capacity goes to infinity in the absence of a bandwidth limitation.

Space Construction System Analysis. Special Emphasis Studies

Generic concepts were analyzed to determine: (1) the maximum size of a deployable solar array which might be packaged into a single orbit payload bay; (2) the optimal overall shape of a large erectable structure for large satellite projects; (3) the optimization of electronic communication with emphasis on the number of antennas and their diameters; and (4) the number of beams, traffic growth, and projections and frequencies were found feasible to package a deployable solar array which could generate over 250 kilowatts of electrical power. Also, it was found that the linear-shaped erectable structure is better for ease of construction and installation of systems, and compares favorably on several other counts. The study of electronic communication technology indicated that proliferation of individual satellites will crowd the spectrum by the early 1990's, so that there will be a strong tendency toward a small number of communications platforms over the continental U.S.A. with many antennas and multiple spot beams.

On making things the best - Aeronautical uses of optimization /Wright Bros. lecture/

The paper's purpose is to summarize and evaluate the results of an investigation into the degree to which formal optimization methods have contributed practically to the design and operation of atmospheric flight vehicles. The nature of this technology is reviewed and illustrated with simple structural examples. A series of published successful applications is described, from the fields of aerodynamics, structures, guidance and control, optimal trajectories and vehicle configuration optimization. The corresponding improvements over conventional analysis are assessed. Speculations are offered as to why these tools have made such little headway toward acceptance by designers. The growing need for their use in the future is explained; they hold out an unparalleled opportunity for improved efficiencies.

Particle Swarm Optimization

The purpose of this paper is to show how the search algorithm known as particle swarm optimization performs. Here, particle swarm optimization is applied to structural design problems, but the method has a much wider range of possible applications. The paper's new contributions are improvements to the particle swarm optimization algorithm and conclusions and recommendations as to the utility of the algorithm, Results of numerical experiments for both continuous and discrete applications are presented in the paper. The results indicate that the particle swarm optimization algorithm does locate the constrained minimum design in continuous applications with very good precision, albeit at a much higher computational cost than that of a typical gradient based optimizer. However, the true potential of particle swarm optimization is primarily in applications with discrete and/or discontinuous functions and variables. Additionally, particle swarm optimization has the potential of efficient computation with very large numbers of concurrently operating processors.

Buckling Design and Imperfection Sensitivity of Sandwich Composite Launch-Vehicle Shell Structures

Composite materials are increasingly being considered and used for launch-vehicle structures. For shell structures, such as interstages, skirts, and shrouds, honeycomb-core sandwich composites are often selected for their structural efficiency. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the structural response, including buckling, of sandwich composite shell structures. Additionally, small geometric imperfections can significantly influence the buckling response, including considerably reducing the buckling load, of shell structures. Thus, both the response of the theoretically perfect structure and the buckling imperfection sensitivity must be considered during the design of such structures. To address the latter, empirically derived design factors, called buckling knockdown factors (KDFs), were developed by NASA in the 1960s to account for this buckling imperfection sensitivity during design. However, most of the test-article designs used in the development of these recommendations are not relevant to modern launch-vehicle constructions and material systems, and in particular, no composite test articles were considered. Herein, a two-part study on composite sandwich shells to (1) examine the relationship between the buckling knockdown factor and the areal mass of optimized designs, and (2) to interrogate the imperfection sensitivity of those optimized designs is presented. Four structures from recent NASA launch-vehicle development activities are considered. First, designs optimized for both strength and stability were generated for each of these structures using design optimization software and a range of buckling knockdown factors; it was found that the designed areal masses varied by between 6.1% and 19.6% over knockdown factors ranging from 0.6 to 0.9. Next, the buckling imperfection sensitivity of the optimized designs is explored using nonlinear finite-element analysis and the as-measured shape of a large-scale composite cylindrical shell. When compared with the current buckling design recommendations, the results suggest that the current recommendations are overly conservative and that the development of new recommendations could reduce the acreage areal mass of many composite sandwich shell designs by between 4% and 19%, depending on the structure.
