Dynamical in-orbit behavior of the Radio Astronomy Explorer satellite

Onboard sensors and associated ground based processing systems are used to maintain a well stabilized attitude for the RAE 1 in its near circular earth orbit despite the satellite's four extremely long and flexible antenna booms. Boom tip deflection pictures and central hub orientation measurements show that large boom vibrations and major attitude stability problems anticipated prior to launch have not materialized.

Light-detection electronics for a Raman lidar

A light-detection system for an optical radar, or lidar, unit to be used for remote temperature and composition measurements was designed, built, and bench tested. This detection system processes three return signal wavelengths: two Raman wavelengths, and the Rayleigh-Mie wavelength at 694.3 nanometers. Means of coping with photomultiplier tube instabilities and limitations are discussed. Circuits for gain control, ranging, and digitizing are included. The phototube gains can be switched fully on in 80 meters (450 nsec) or off in 30 meters (200 nsec) of range. The range circuit processes signals from 0.1 to 2 kilometers, with an estimated range resolution of less than 5 meters.

User oriented multispectral data processing at the University of Michigan

The feasibility of solving practical multispectral data reduction problems by available processing techniques and the identification of areas for more technical development requirements are considered. Parameter mapping and ratio mapping techniques prove their usefulness in a corn blight watch experiment. A hybrid computer processing system is advocated for complete realization of aircraft and spacecraft sensor potentials.

A fault-tolerant information processing concept for space vehicles.

A distributed fault-tolerant information processing system is proposed, comprising a central multiprocessor, dedicated local processors, and multiplexed input-output buses connecting them together. The processors in the multiprocessor are duplicated for error detection, which is felt to be less expensive than using coded redundancy of comparable effectiveness. Error recovery is made possible by a triplicated scratchpad memory in each processor. The main multiprocessor memory uses replicated memory for error detection and correction. Local processors use any of three conventional redundancy techniques: voting, duplex pairs with backup, and duplex pairs in independent subsystems.

The needs of the 80's - Data processing.

The potential observational needs requiring data processing are assessed for a projection of the large data processing systems needed to meet the requirements of meteorology, environmentology, earth resources inventories, and hydrology in the next decade. It is anticipated that a large array of space and ground sensing devices and basic communications capabilities for collecting and disseminating large volumes of data will be available by 1980.

Fabrication studies of Nb3Al superconductors.

Study aimed at developing fabrication techniques for the production of stabilized conductors containing both binary and ternary intermetallics of the Nb-Al system. Processes are described that offer a foundation for practical fabricating techniques suitable for the production of long lengths of stabilized Nb3Al superconductor. Once the parameters are optimized, it is conceivable that multistrand twisted composites of both binary and ternary intermetallics should become feasible.

A series-resonant silicon-controlled-rectifier power processor for ion thrusters

A program to develop a power processing system for ion thrusters is presented. Basic operation of the silicon controlled rectifier series inverter circuitry is examined. The approach for synthesizing such circuits into a system which limits the electrical stress levels on the power source, semiconductor switching elements, and the ion thruster load is described. Experimental results are presented for a 2.5-kW breadboard system designed to operate a 20-cm ion thruster.

Two dimensional digital computer

The development of a two dimensional data processing system is reported that extracts data from optical images by performing multiple logical operations simultaneously. A two dimensional logical circuits is described that contains a liquid crystal negation element and an OR-ing element. The negation element performs 20,000 negations simultaneously, and the OR does 20,000 OR operations simultaneously.

Computer techniques used for some enhancements of ERTS images

The JPL VICAR image processing system has been used for the enhancement of images received from the ERTS for the Arizona geology mapping experiment. This system contains flexible capabilities for reading and repairing MSS digital tape images, for geometric corrections and interpicture registration, for various enhancements and analyses of the data, and for display of the images in black and white and color.

Optical data processing using paraboloidal mirror segments

An optical data processing system using paraboloidal reflecting surfaces is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment the paraboloidal reflecting surfaces are segments of a paraboloidal mirror. A source of coherent light is in the focal plane of the first paraboloidal mirror segment which collimates the beam and reflects it toward a second paraboloidal mirror surface. The information to be analyzed, on a transparency for example, is placed in the collimated beam. The beam is reflected from the second paraboloidal mirror segment and focused on a Fourier transform plane. A photon detector could be placed in the Fourier transform plane or suitable spatial filters, with the filtered beam then being reflected from a third paraboloidal mirror segment to be focused on a reconstruction plane.

Forced guidance and distribution of practice in sequential information processing.

Distribution of practice and forced guidance were used in a sequential information-processing task in an attempt to increase the capacity of human information-processing mechanisms. A reaction time index of the psychological refractory period was used as the response measure. Massing of practice lengthened response times while forced guidance shortened them. Interpretation was in terms of load reduction upon the response-selection stage of the information-processing system.-

Video-to-film color-image recorder.

A precision video-to-film recorder for use in image data processing systems, being developed for NASA, will convert three video input signals (red, blue, green) into a single full-color light beam for image recording on color film. Argon ion and krypton lasers are used to produce three spectral lines which are independently modulated by the appropriate video signals, combined into a single full-color light beam, and swept over the recording film in a raster format for image recording. A rotating multi-faceted spinner mounted on a translating carriage generates the raster, and an annotation head is used to record up to 512 alphanumeric characters in a designated area outside the image area.

The first earth resources technology satellite nearly two years of operation

A brief status report on the performance of the ERTS-1, and an overview of the applications derived from the images are presented. The ERTS-1 spacecraft, sensor and picture processing systems have continued to perform almost flawlessly since August 1972. Registered, multispectral images of all major land masses of the earth, both polar and some oceanic regions are continuously made, covering daily an area of about 5 million square kilometers. The systematic repetition of these observations, which were made over most parts of the world at least once every season, and the high accuracy of thematic mapping that can be obtained from the images, have resulted in many applications that have immense potential benefits for developing countries. Among these applications are the detection and accurate mensuration of surface water; the identification and mensuration of forests, rangeland, crops and soils; the monitoring and mapping of water quality, wildlife habitats and of the effects of land use practices on food and water resources; the assessment of flooding and earthquake hazards; and the facilitation of mineral exploration.
