An economical net solar flux radiometer.

The theory and design of an economical solar flux radiometer readily adaptable to the conventional radiosonde system are presented in response to the need cited by the Atmospheric Radiation Working Group (1971) for the development of an inexpensive light-weight short-wave radiometer sonde. Prototype instrument tests and current modifications are discussed. It is shown that the basic instrument can be easily modified to measure separately the upward and downward directed flux components, in addition to the net flux.

Net-field polarization in a magnetically biased plasma.

Systematic treatment of the net-field polarization of a plane wave propagating in a magnetically biased cold plasma. Polarization transformations under quasi-longitudinal conditions are examined. The wide variety of polarization transformations available suggests the usefulness of slabs of magnetically biased plasma to synthesize microwave polarizers and depolarizers.

Mariner 9 control net of Mars, August 1972

Results are presented for a planet-wide geodetic control net of Mars which is based on Mariner 9 pictures as of August 1972. Aerocentric and aerographic coordinate of 809 control points were computed from 407 television frames. Photogrammetric parameters and methodology used in the computations are discussed. The coordinates of the features are given and figures that show the locations of the control points on the surface of Mars are included.

Net radiation method for transmission through partially transparent plates

It is shown that the net radiation method for enclosures with opaque surfaces described by Siegel and Howell (1972) can, in an appropriately adapted version, provide a computation procedure suitable for situations with semitransparent regions. This procedure involves simple equations at each interface and can be readily applied to complicated systems such as those consisting of absorbing and nonabsorbing layers, and layers with different reflectivities at each interface. The equations can also be readily incorporated in a computerized design procedure.

Net field-aligned currents observed by Triad

The existence of a net current flowing into or away from the ionosphere in the current layer is inferred from the Triad-satellite magnetometer observation of a steplike level shift in the east-west component of the magnetic field at 800 km altitude. The current direction is toward the ionosphere on the morning side and away from it on the afternoon side. The current layer is identified as the same layer that was observed by the Ogo 5 satellite at much higher altitudes. Thus, the field-aligned currents observed by Triad must be considered to be an important element in the electrodynamical coupling between the distant magnetosphere and the ionosphere.

Net shape fabrication of Alpha Silicon Carbide turbine components

Development of Alpha Silicon Carbide components by net shape fabrication techniques has continued in conjunction with several turbine engine programs. Progress in injection molding of simple parts has been extended to much larger components. Turbine rotors fabricated by a one piece molding have been successfully spin tested above design speeds. Static components weighing up to 4.5 kg and 33 cc in diameter have also been produced using this technique. Use of sintering fixtures significantly improves dimensional control. A new Si-SiC composite material has also been developed with average strengths up to 1000 MPa (150 ksi) at 1200 C.

Estimating net rainfall, evaporation and water storage of a bare soil from sequential L-band emissivities

A general method to use a time series of L-band emissivities as an input to a hydrological model for continuously monitoring the net rainfall and evaporation as well as the water content over the entire soil profile is proposed. The model requires a sufficiently accurate and general relation between soil emissivity and surface moisture content. A model which requires the soil hydraulic properties as an additional input, but does not need any weather data was developed. The method is shown to be numerically consistent.

The vertical structure of Arctic haze as determined from airborne net-flux radiometer measurements

From net-flux radiometer measurements and model results, the vertical layer structure is deduced of the Arctic haze encountered during two of the AGASP flights. The total value of the absorption optical depth is found to be on the order of 0.065 for both flights, with the majority of the absorbing aerosol concentrated in the lowest 1.6 km of the atmosphere. A comparison of these results with measurements of the carbon concentration leads to a value of the specific absorption of carbon of 24 sq m g. While higher than expected, this value is shown to be consistent with an internally-mixed aerosol of carbon cores and sulfate shells.

Solar torsional oscillations - A net pattern with wavenumber 2 as artifact

A net solar torsional oscillation pattern is uncovered through a new analysis of Mount Wilson Doppler data. This pattern, found from zonal fits, without subtraction of a global fit, consists of a relative polar spin-up around solar maximum, alternating with a single traveling wave that runs from mid latitude to low latitude during the rest of the cycle. It is suggested that these are separate phenomena, and thus that the previously inferred pole-to-equator traveling pattern with wavenumber 2 per hemisphere may be a mathematical artifact. The new pattern retains aspects of the original pattern's relationship to magnetic activity, and agrees better with model predictions.

Thermal net flux measurements on the Pioneer Venus entry probes

Corrected thermal net (upward minus downward flux) radiation data from four Pioneer Venus probes at latitudes of 4 deg and 60 deg N, and 27 deg and 31 deg S, are presented. Comparisons of these fluxes with radiative transfer calculations were interpreted in terms of cloud properties and the global distribution of water vapor in the lower atmosphere of Venus. The presence of an as yet undetected source of IR opacity is implied by the fluxes in the upper cloud range. It was also shown that beneath the clouds the fluxes at a given altitude increase with latitude, suggesting greater IR cooling below the clouds at high latitudes and a decrease of the water vapor mixing ratios toward the equator.

Evolution of the net surface shortwave radiation over the Indian Ocean during summer MONEX (1979) - A satellite description

The evolution of the net shortwave (NSW) radiation fields during the monsoon of 1979 was analyzed, using geostationary satellite data, collected before, during, and after the monsoon onset. It is seen, from the time sequence of NSW fields, that during the preonset phase the characteristics of the NSW field are dominated by a strong maximum in the entire Arabian Sea and by a strong minimum in the central and eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, the minimum being associated with the intense convective activity occurring in that region. As the season evolves, the minima of NSW associated with the large scale convective activity propagate westward in the equatorial ocean. During the monsoon onset, there occurs an explosive onset of the convection activity in the Arabian Sea: the maximum has retreated towards the Somalia coast, and most of the sea then experiences a strong minimum of NSW associated with the intense precipitation occurring along the southwestern coast of the Indian subcontinent.

Investigating the role of the land surface in explaining the interannual variation of the net radiation balance over the Western Sahara and sub-Sahara

The status of the data sets is discussed. Progress was made in both data analysis and modeling areas. The atmospheric and land surface contributions to the net radiation budget over the Sahara-Sahel region is being decoupled. The interannual variability of these two processes was investigated and this variability related to seasonal rainfall fluctuations. A modified Barnes objective analysis scheme was developed which uses an eliptic scan pattern and a 3-pass iteration of the difference fields.

Petri net model for analysis of concurrently processed complex algorithms

This paper presents a Petri-net model suitable for analyzing the concurrent processing of computationally complex algorithms. The decomposed operations are to be processed in a multiple processor, data driven architecture. Of particular interest is the application of the model to both the description of the data/control flow of a particular algorithm, and to the general specification of the data driven architecture. A candidate architecture is also presented.

Channel size influence on the heat flux density at zero net mass flow in the non-linear transport regime between 1.2 and 2.1 K

Porous media and narrow ducts of simple shape at zero net mass flow (ZNMF) are used to investigate the influence of pore size on the entropy/heat convection rate at ZNMF. The study is relevant to the development of specific types of phase separators. Previous work on heat transport by convection is extended to porous media without mass loss. The experimental results show the influence of pore size on heat flux for permeabilities between 10 to the -8th and 10 to the -6th sq cm. ZNMF plug data are found to be similar to results obtained for vapor liquid phase separation.
