Cost of convenience in long-dwell public electric vehicle charging

This paper presents a comprehensive methodology for quantifying trade offs between the cost of charging at public Level-2 charging stations and the inconvenience of using those stations. The paper also includes a methodology for generating synthetic travel itineraries of tens of thousands of drivers and for sizing and placing charging infrastructure to support those itineraries. Inconvenience is quantified by a weighted sum of the time a driver spends traveling between their intended destination and the charging station; weights are derived from the activity interrupted by the driver’s need to move their car. We demonstrate a trade off between cost of charging and inconvenience by varying how far away from their destination drivers are willing to charge. Our results demonstrate the importance of access to stations and suggest that other methods for increasing access, such as increasing the spatial density of stations, could significantly impact charging cost and inconvenience. Moreover, average energy cost may be reduced by introducing managed charging, which also affects inconvenience. The framework presented here can be used to evaluate the overlapping effects of both access and charge management. Furthermore, the framework can be easily extended to include additional factors such as capital costs, enabling thorough evaluation and planning of regional Level-2 charging networks.

Management of information for mission operations using automated keyword referencing

Although millions of dollars have helped to improve the operability and technology of ground data systems for mission operations, almost all mission documentation remains bound in printed volumes. This form of documentation is difficult and timeconsuming to use, may be out-of-date, and is usually not cross-referenced with other related volumes of mission documentation. A more effective, automated method of mission information access is needed. A new method of information management for mission operations using automated keyword referencing is proposed. We expound on the justification for and the objectives of this concept. The results of a prototype tool for mission information access that uses a hypertextlike user interface and existing mission documentation are shared. Finally, the future directions and benefits of our proposed work are described.

Flexible Method for Inter-object Communication in C++

A method has been developed for organizing and sharing large amounts of information between objects in C++ code. This method uses a set of object classes to define variables and group them into tables. The variable tables presented here provide a convenient way of defining and cataloging data, as well as a user-friendly input/output system, a standardized set of access functions, mechanisms for ensuring data integrity, methods for interprocessor data transfer, and an interpretive language for programming relationships between parameters. The object-oriented nature of these variable tables enables the use of multiple data types, each with unique attributes and behavior. Because each variable provides its own access methods, redundant table lookup functions can be bypassed, thus decreasing access times while maintaining data integrity. In addition, a method for automatic reference counting was developed to manage memory safely.

User-Centered Indexing for Adaptive Information Access

We are focusing on information access tasks characterized by large volume of hypermedia connected technical documents, a need for rapid and effective access to familiar information, and long-term interaction with evolving information. The problem for technical users is to build and maintain a personalized task-oriented model of the information to quickly access relevant information. We propose a solution which provides user-centered adaptive information retrieval and navigation. This solution supports users in customizing information access over time. It is complementary to information discovery methods which provide access to new information, since it lets users customize future access to previously found information. It relies on a technique, called Adaptive Relevance Network, which creates and maintains a complex indexing structure to represent personal user's information access maps organized by concepts. This technique is integrated within the Adaptive HyperMan system, which helps NASA Space Shuttle flight controllers organize and access large amount of information. It allows users to select and mark any part of a document as interesting, and to index that part with user-defined concepts. Users can then do subsequent retrieval of marked portions of documents. This functionality allows users to define and access personal collections of information, which are dynamically computed. The system also supports collaborative review by letting users share group access maps. The adaptive relevance network provides long-term adaptation based both on usage and on explicit user input. The indexing structure is dynamic and evolves over time. Leading and generalization support flexible retrieval of information under similar concepts. The network is geared towards more recent information access, and automatically manages its size in order to maintain rapid access when scaling up to large hypermedia space. We present results of simulated learning experiments.

Usage of Data-Encoded Web Maps with Client Side Color Rendering for Combined Data Access, Visualization and Modeling Purposes

Current approaches to satellite observation data storage and distribution implement separate visualization and data access methodologies which often leads to the need in time consuming data ordering and coding for applications requiring both visual representation as well as data handling and modeling capabilities. We describe an approach we implemented for a data-encoded web map service based on storing numerical data within server map tiles and subsequent client side data manipulation and map color rendering. The approach relies on storing data using the lossless compression Portable Network Graphics (PNG) image data format which is natively supported by web-browsers allowing on-the-fly browser rendering and modification of the map tiles. The method is easy to implement using existing software libraries and has the advantage of easy client side map color modifications, as well as spatial subsetting with physical parameter range filtering. This method is demonstrated for the ASTER-GDEM elevation model and selected MODIS data products and represents an alternative to the currently used storage and data access methods. One additional benefit includes providing multiple levels of averaging due to the need in generating map tiles at varying resolutions for various map magnification levels. We suggest that such merged data and mapping approach may be a viable alternative to existing static storage and data access methods for a wide array of combined simulation, data access and visualization purposes.

Method and apparatus for reducing memory access latency

Logic such as a memory controller writes primary data from an incoming write request as well as corresponding replicated primary data (which is a copy of the primary data) to one or more different memory banks of random access memory in response to determining a memory access contention condition for the address (including a range of addresses) corresponding to the incoming write request. When the memory bank containing the primary data is busy servicing a write request, such as to another row of memory in the bank, a read request for the primary data is serviced by reading the replicated primary data from the different memory bank of the random access memory to service the incoming read request.

Rapid Construction of Validated Chemistry Models for Advanced Biofuels (Co-Optima Final Report)

Computer methods were developed and demonstrated that make it possible to predict the combustion and pyrolysis chemistry of proposed biofuels, even before the biofuels are ever manufactured or experimentally tested. The methods are based on first-principles calculations of reaction rates and equilibria. A large number of complicated calculations are required, so we developed a computer workflow that automates many of the steps. With the chemical structure of the biofuel and the system conditions (temperature, pressure, compositions, etc.) as the input, the computer methods can construct a detailed kinetic model with refined parameters without intense human intervention. The automation of model construction makes it practical for a single engineer to make the predictions in a reasonable time period. The accuracy of the computer predictions was tested by measuring the time-profiles of various reaction intermediates (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, water, formaldehyde, methane, and ethylene) formed as the biofuels pyrolyze or ignite using sophisticated laser shock tube methods. Several biofuels, including methyl propyl ether, cyclopentanone, butyl acetate isomers, etc., were carefully studied to demonstrate the validity of the proposed computational and experimental methodology. This research project opens up the possibility for assessing some proposed biofuels on the computer without expensive experimental campaigns. The new computer methods are open source and well-documented, allowing a knowledgeable modeler to easily access the developed methods and implement them in their work routine. Moreover, they are also convenient and powerful, promising for developing the fuel chemistry models needed for use in engine simulators, facilitating co-optimization of new engine designs with new fuels.

Cache management based on access type priority

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for cache management based on access type priority are disclosed. A system includes at least a processor and a cache. During a program execution phase, certain access types are more likely to cause demand hits in the cache than others. Demand hits are load and store hits to the cache. A run-time profiling mechanism is employed to find which access types are more likely to cause demand hits. Based on the profiling results, the cache lines that will likely be accessed in the future are retained based on their most recent access type. The goal is to increase demand hits and thereby improve system performance. An efficient cache replacement policy can potentially reduce redundant data movement, thereby improving system performance and reducing energy consumption.

Toward DMC Accuracy Across Chemical Space with Scalable Δ-QML

In the past decade, quantum diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) has been demonstrated to successfully predict the energetics and properties of a wide range of molecules and solids by numerically solving the electronic many-body Schrödinger equation. With O(N 3 ) scaling with the number of electrons N, DMC has the potential to be a reference method for larger systems that are not accessible to more traditional methods such as CCSD(T). Assessing the accuracy of DMC for smaller molecules becomes the stepping stone in making the method a reference for larger systems. We show that when coupled with quantum machine learning (QML)-based surrogate methods, the computational burden can be alleviated such that quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) shows clear potential to undergird the formation of high-quality descriptions across chemical space. We discuss three crucial approximations necessary to accomplish this: the fixed-node approximation, universal and accurate references for chemical bond dissociation energies, and scalable minimal amons-set-based QML (AQML) models. Numerical evidence presented includes converged DMC results for over 1000 small organic molecules with up to five heavy atoms used as amons and 50 medium-sized organic molecules with nine heavy atoms to validate the AQML predictions. Finally, numerical evidence collected for Δ-AQML models suggests that already modestly sized QMC training data sets of amons suffice to predict total energies with near chemical accuracy throughout chemical space.

New method for detecting fast neutrino flavor conversions in core-collapse supernova models with two-moment neutrino transport

Fast-pairwise neutrino oscillations potentially affect many aspects of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe): the explosion mechanism, neutrino signals, and nucleosynthesis in the ejecta. This particular mode of collective neutrino oscillations has a deep connection to the angular structure of neutrinos in momentum space; for instance, the appearance of electron-neutrino lepton number (ELN) angular crossings in momentum space is a good indicator of the occurrence of flavor conversions. However, many multidimensional CCSN simulations are carried out with approximate neutrino transport (such as two-moment methods), which limits access to the angular distributions of neutrinos, i.e., inhibits ELNcrossing searches. In this paper, we develop a new method of searching for ELN crossing in these CCSN simulations. The required data is the zeroth and first angular moments of neutrinos and the matter profile, all of which are available in CCSN models with the two-moment method. One of the novelties of our new method is the use of a ray-tracing neutrino transport to determine ELNs in the direction of the stellar center. It is designed to compensate for shortcomings of the crossing searches with only two angular moments. We assess the capability of the method by carrying out a detailed comparison with results of full Boltzmann neutrino transport in 1D and 2D CCSN models. In this work, we find that the ray-tracing neutrino transport improves the accuracy of crossing searches; indeed, the appearance/disappearance of the crossings is accurately detected even in the region of forward-peaked angular distributions. The new method is computationally cheap and has the benefit of efficient parallelization; hence, it will be useful for ELN-crossing searches in any CCSN models that employ two-moment neutrino transport.

Illustrated structural application of universal first-order reliability method

The general application of the proposed first-order reliability method was achieved through the universal normalization of engineering probability distribution data. The method superimposes prevailing deterministic techniques and practices on the first-order reliability method to surmount deficiencies of the deterministic method and provide benefits of reliability techniques and predictions. A reliability design factor is derived from the reliability criterion to satisfy a specified reliability and is analogous to the deterministic safety factor. Its application is numerically illustrated on several practical structural design and verification cases with interesting results and insights. Two concepts of reliability selection criteria are suggested. Though the method was developed to support affordable structures for access to space, the method should also be applicable for most high-performance air and surface transportation systems.

A software architecture for multidisciplinary applications: Integrating task and data parallelism

Data parallel languages such as Vienna Fortran and HPF can be successfully applied to a wide range of numerical applications. However, many advanced scientific and engineering applications are of a multidisciplinary and heterogeneous nature and thus do not fit well into the data parallel paradigm. In this paper we present new Fortran 90 language extensions to fill this gap. Tasks can be spawned as asynchronous activities in a homogeneous or heterogeneous computing environment; they interact by sharing access to Shared Data Abstractions (SDA's). SDA's are an extension of Fortran 90 modules, representing a pool of common data, together with a set of Methods for controlled access to these data and a mechanism for providing persistent storage. Our language supports the integration of data and task parallelism as well as nested task parallelism and thus can be used to express multidisciplinary applications in a natural and efficient way.
