Improved low cost ac-to-dc converter

Circuit converts an rms, ac voltage to a proportional dc voltage with good accuracy over a voltage range of approximately 6-1. It incorporates a pair of vacuum thermocouples in a dc feedback circuit.

Novel dielectric reduces corona breakdown in ac capacitors

Dielectric system was developed which consists of two layers of 25-gage paper separated by one layer of 50-gage polypropylene to reduce corona breakdown in ac capacitors. System can be used in any alternating current application where constant voltage does not exceed 400 V rms. With a little research it could probably be increased to 700 to 800 V rms.

Atlas-Centaur AC-17 performance for applications technology satellite ATS-D mission

The Atlas-Centaur launch vehicle (AC-17) with Applications Technology Satellite-D (ATS-D) was launched from Cape Kennedy in August 1968. Mission objectives were not achieved because the Centaur main engine failed to start for the second powered phase. An evaluation is reported of the performance of the Atlas-Centaur systems, from lift off through the Centaur restart attempt. A brief analysis of the Centaur failure is included.

Variable frequency inverter for ac induction motors with torque, speed and braking control

A variable frequency inverter was designed for driving an ac induction motor which varies the frequency and voltage to the motor windings in response to varying torque requirements for the motor so that the applied voltage amplitude and frequency are of optimal value for any motor load and speed requirement. The slip frequency of the motor is caused to vary proportionally to the torque and feedback is provided so that the most efficient operating voltage is applied to the motor. Winding current surge is limited and a controlled negative slip causes motor braking and return of load energy to a dc power source.

Power factor control system for AC induction motors

A power factor control system for use with ac induction motors was designed which samples lines voltage and current through the motor and decreases power input to the motor proportional to the detected phase displacement between current and voltage. This system provides, less power to the motor, as it is less loaded.

Methods of attenuating wind turbine ac generator output variations

Wind speed variation, tower blockage and structural and inertial factors produce unsteady torque in wind turbines. Methods for modifying the turbine torque so that steady torque is delivered to the coupled ac generator are discussed. The method that may evolve will be influenced by the power use that develops and the trade-offs of cost, weight and complexity.

Simple circuit monitors "third wire" in ac lines

Device detects interruption of ground connection in three-wire electrical equipment and shuts off ac power to prevent shock hazard. Silicon-controlled rectifiers detect floating ground, and deenergize optoelectric relays thereby breaking power connections. Circuit could be incorporated into hand tools, appliances, and other electrical equipment.

Energy saving in ac generators

Circuit cuts no-load losses, without sacrificing full-load power. Phase-contro circuit includes gate-controlled semiconductor switch that cuts off applied voltage for most of ac cycle if generator idling. Switch "on" time increases when generator is in operation.

A PWM transistor inverter for an ac electric vehicle drive

A prototype system consisting of closely integrated motor, inverter, and transaxle has been built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of a three-phase ac transistorized inverter for electric vehicle applications. The microprocessor-controlled inverter employs monolithic power transistors to drive an oil-cooled, three-phase induction traction motor at a peak output power of 30 kW from a 144 V battery pack. Transistor safe switching requirements are discussed, and a circuit is presented for recovering trapped snubber inductor energy at transistor turn-off.

Fast recovery, high voltage silicon diodes for AC motor controllers

The fabrication and characterization of a high voltage, high current, fast recovery silicon diode for use in AC motor controllers, originally developed for NASA for use in avionics power supplies, is presented. The diode utilizes a positive bevel PIN mesa structure with glass passivation and has the following characteristics: peak inverse voltage - 1200 volts, forward voltage at 50 amperes - 1.5 volts, reverse recovery time of 200 nanoseconds. Characterization data for the diode, included in a table, show agreement with design concepts developed for power diodes. Circuit diagrams of the diode are also given.

Advanced AC permanent magnet axial flux disc motor for electric passenger vehicle

An ac permanent magnet axial flux disc motor was developed to operate with a thyristor load commutated inverter as part of an electric vehicle drive system. The motor was required to deliver 29.8 kW (40 hp) peak and 10.4 kW (14 hp) average with a maximum speed of 11,000 rpm. It was also required to run at leading power factor to commutate the inverter. Three motors were built.
