Galactic ArchaeoLogIcaL ExcavatiOns (GALILEO) II. t-SNE portrait of local fossil relics and structures

Based on high-quality Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) DR17 and Gaia DR3 data for 1742 red giants stars within 5 kpc of the Sun and not rotating with the Galactic disk (V φ < 100 km s -1 ), we used the nonlinear technique of unsupervised analysis t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) to detect coherent structures in the space of ten chemical-abundance ratios: [Fe/H], [O/Fe], [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Ca/Fe], [C/Fe], [N/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Mn/Fe], and [Ni/Fe]. Additionally, we obtained orbital parameters for each star using the nonaxisymmetric gravitational potential GravPot16. Seven structures are detected, including Splash, Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE), the high-α heated-disk population, N-C-O peculiar stars, and inner disk-like stars, plus two other groups that did not match anything previously reported in the literature, here named Galileo 5 and Galileo 6 (G5 and G6). These two groups overlap with Splash in [Fe/H], with G5 having a lower metallicity than G6, and they are both between GSE and Splash in the [Mg/Mn] versus [Al/Fe] plane, with G5 being in the α-rich in situ locus and G6 on the border of the α-poor in situ one. Nonetheless, their low [Ni/Fe] hints at a possible ex situ origin. Their orbital energy distributions are between Splash and GSE, with G5 being slightly more energetic than G6. We verified the robustness of all the obtained groups by exploring a large range of t-SNE parameters, applying it to various subsets of data, and also measuring the effect of abundance errors through Monte Carlo tests.

The MeerKAT Fornax Survey: II. The rapid removal of H I from dwarf galaxies in the Fornax cluster

We present MeerKAT Fornax Survey atomic hydrogen (H I) observations of the dwarf galaxies located in the central ~2.5 × 4 deg 2 of the Fornax galaxy cluster (R vir ~2°). The H I images presented in this work have a 3σ column density sensitivity between 2.7 and 50 × 10 18 cm –2 over 25 km s –1 for spatial resolution between 4 and 1 kpc. We are able to detect an impressive M HI = 5 × 10 5 M ⊙ 3σ point source with a line width of 50 km s –1 at a distance of 20 Mpc. We detected H I in 17 out of the 304 dwarfs in our field, with 14 out of the 36 late-type dwarfs (LTDs) and three out of the 268 early-type dwarfs (ETDs). The H I-detected LTDs have likely just joined the cluster and are on their first infall as they are located at large clustocentric radii, with comparable MHI and mean stellar surface brightness at fixed luminosity as blue, star-forming LTDs in the field. By contrast, the H I-detected ETDs have likely been in the cluster longer than the LTDs and acquired their H I through a recent merger or accretion from nearby H I. Eight of the H I-detected LTDs host irregular or asymmetric H I emission and disturbed or lopsided stellar emission. There are two clear cases of ram pressure shaping the H I, with the LTDs displaying compressed H I on the side closest to the cluster centre and a one-sided, starless tail pointing away from the cluster centre. The H I-detected dwarfs avoid the most massive potentials (i.e. cluster centre and massive galaxies), consistent with massive galaxies playing an active role in the removal of H I. We created a simple toy model to quantify the timescale of H I stripping in the cluster by reproducing the observed M r' –M HI relation. We find that a M HI = 10 8 M ⊙ dwarf is stripped in ~240 Myr. The model is consistent with our observations, where low-mass LTDs are directly stripped of their H I from a single encounter and more massive LTDs can harbour a disturbed H I morphology due to longer times or multiple encounters being required to fully strip their H I. This is the first time dwarf galaxies with M HI ≲ 1 × 10 6 M ⊙ have been detected and resolved beyond the local group and in a galaxy cluster.

The γ -process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae

The γ-process nucleosynthesis in core-collapse supernovae is generally accepted as a feasible process for the synthesis of neutron-deficient isotopes beyond iron. However, crucial discrepancies between theory and observations still exist: the average yields of γ-process nucleosynthesis from massive stars are still insufficient to reproduce the solar distribution in galactic chemical evolution calculations, and the yields of the Mo and Ru isotopes are a factor of ten lower than the yields of the other γ-process nuclei. We investigate the γ-process in five sets of core-collapse supernova models published in the literature with initial masses of 15, 20, and 25 M ⊙ at solar metallicity. We compared the γ-process overproduction factors from the different models. To highlight the possible effect of nuclear physics input, we also considered 23 ratios of two isotopes close to each other in mass relative to their solar values. Further, we investigated the contribution of C–O shell mergers in the supernova progenitors as an additional site of the γ-process. Our analysis shows that a large scatter among the different models exists for both the γ-process integrated yields and the isotopic ratios. We find only ten ratios that agree with their solar values, all the others differ by at least a factor of three from the solar values in all the considered sets of models. The γ-process within C–O shell mergers mostly influences the isotopic ratios that involve intermediate and heavy proton-rich isotopes with A > 100. We conclude that there are large discrepancies both among the different data sets and between the model predictions and the solar abundance distribution. More calculations are needed; particularly updating the nuclear network, because the majority of the models considered in this work do not use the latest reaction rates for the γ-process nucleosynthesis. Moreover, the role of C–O shell mergers requires further investigation.

Structure of iso-density sets in supersonic isothermal turbulence

Context: The gas density structure of the cold molecular phase of the interstellar medium is the main controller of star formation. Aims: A theoretical framework is proposed to describe the structural content of the density field in isothermal supersonic turbulence. Methods: It makes use of correlation and structure functions of the phase indicator field defined for different iso-density values. The relations between these two-point statistics and the geometrical features of iso-density sets such as the volume fraction, the surface density, the curvature, and fractal characteristics are provided. An exact scale-by-scale budget equation is further derived revealing the role of the turbulent cascade and dilation on the structural evolution of the density field. Although applicable to many flow situations, this tool is here first invoked for characterising supersonic isothermal turbulence, using data from the currently best-resolved numerical simulation. Results: We show that iso-density sets are surface fractals rather than mass fractals, with dimensions that markedly differ between dilute, neutral, and dense regions. The surface–size relation is established for different iso-density values. We further find that the turbulent cascade of iso-density sets is directed from large towards smaller scales, in agreement with the classical picture that turbulence acts to concentrate more surface into smaller volumes. Intriguingly, there is no range of scales that complies with a constant transfer rate in the cascade, challenging our fundamental understanding of interstellar turbulence. Finally, we recast the virial theorem in a new formulation drawing an explicit relation between the aforementioned geometrical measures and the dynamics of iso-density sets.

Mapping dynamical ejecta and disk masses from numerical relativity simulations of neutron star mergers

Abstract We present fitting formulae for the dynamical ejecta properties and remnant disk masses from the largest to date sample of numerical relativity simulations. The considered data include some of the latest simulations with microphysical nuclear equations of state (EOS) and neutrino transport as well as other results with polytropic EOS available in the literature. Our analysis indicates that the broad features of the dynamical ejecta and disk properties can be captured by fitting expressions, that depend on mass ratio and reduced tidal parameter. The comparative analysis of literature data shows that microphysics and neutrino absorption have a significant impact on the dynamical ejecta properties. Microphysical nuclear EOS lead to average velocities smaller than polytropic EOS, while including neutrino absorption results in larger average ejecta masses and electron fractions. Hence, microphysics and neutrino transport are necessary to obtain quantitative models of the ejecta in terms of the binary parameters.

Entanglement between two gravitating universes

Abstract We study two disjoint universes in an entangled pure state. When only one universe contains gravity, the path integral for the n th Rényi entropy includes a wormhole between the n copies of the gravitating universe, leading to a standard ‘island formula’ for entanglement entropy consistent with unitarity of quantum information. When both universes contain gravity, gravitational corrections to this configuration lead to a violation of unitarity. However, the path integral is now dominated by a novel wormhole with 2 n boundaries connecting replica copies of both universes. The analytic continuation of this contribution involves a quotient by Z n replica symmetry, giving a cylinder connecting the two universes. When entanglement is large, this configuration has an effective description as a ‘swap wormhole’, a geometry in which the boundaries of the two universes are glued together by a ‘swaperator’. This description allows precise computation of a generalized entropy-like formula for entanglement entropy. The quantum extremal surface computing the entropy lives on the Lorentzian continuation of the cylinder/swap wormhole, which has a connected Cauchy slice stretching between the universes—a realization of the ER = EPR idea. The new wormhole restores unitarity of quantum information.

Addendum: A note on spin two fields in curved backgrounds (2007 Class. Quantum Grav. 24 1683)

Abstract Some time ago, we showed that a weak (linear) massless spin two wave could only propagate on a Ricci-flat or Ricci-constant background: it must necessarily be a perturbation of general relativity. This was just the continuation of the higher spin chain: massless s = 3/2 also required Ricci-flatness (which is the basis of supergravity) while s > 2 needs Riemann flatness. This note, entitled ‘higher spin m ≠ 0 excitations on curved backgrounds and cosmological supergravity’, re-analyzes the problem in a perhaps more physical way: by considering massless and—only apparently—massive small excitations and showing how their parameters relate to the cosmological constant. We will thus prove, in a simple physical way, the necessity, as well as the sufficiency, of the known supergravity results.

Traversable wormholes in four dimensions

Here, we present a wormhole solution in four dimensions. It is a solution of an Einstein Maxwell theory plus charged massless fermions. The fermions give rise to a negative Casimir-like energy, which makes the wormhole possible. It is a long wormhole that does not lead to causality violations in the ambient space. It can be viewed as a pair of entangled near extremal black holes with an interaction term generated by the exchange of fermion fields. The solution can be embedded in the Standard Model by making its overall size small compared to the electroweak scale.

Triple interference, non-linear Talbot effect and gravitization of the quantum

Recently we have discussed a new approach to the problem of quantum gravity in which the quantum mechanical structures that are traditionally fixed, such as the Fubini–Study metric in the Hilbert space of states, become dynamical and so implement the idea of gravitizing the quantum. Here, in this paper we elaborate on a specific test of this new approach to quantum gravity using triple interference in a varying gravitational field. Our discussion is driven by a profound analogy with recent triple-path interference experiments performed in the context of non-linear optics. We emphasize that the triple interference experiment in a varying gravitational field would deeply influence the present understanding of the kinematics of quantum gravity and quantum gravity phenomenology. We also discuss the non-linear Talbot effect as another striking phenomenological probe of gravitization of the geometry of quantum theory.

Superstring-inspired particle cosmology: inflation, neutrino masses, leptogenesis, dark matter & the SUSY scale

We develop a string-inspired model for particle cosmology, based on a flipped SU(5)×U(1) gauge group formulated in a no-scale supergravity framework. The model realizes Starobinsky-like inflation, which we assume to be followed by strong reheating, with the GUT symmetry being broken subsequently by a light ‘flaton’ field whose decay generates a second stage of reheating. We discuss the production of gravitinos and the non-thermal contribution made by their decays to the density of cold dark matter, which is assumed to be provided by the lightest neutralino. We also discuss the masses of light and heavy neutrinos and leptogenesis. As discussed previously, a key rôle is played by a superpotential coupling between the inflaton, matter and GUT Higgs fields, called λ 6 . We scan over possible values of λ 6 , exploring the correlations between the possible values of observables. We emphasize that the release of entropy during the GUT transition allows large regions of supersymmetry-breaking parameter space that would otherwise lead to severe overdensity of dark matter. Furthermore, we find that the Big Bang nucleosynthesis lower limit on the reheating temperature of ~ 1 MeV restricts the supersymmetry-breaking scale to a range O(10) TeV that is consistent with the absence of supersymmetric particles at the LHC.

An accurate perturbative approach to redshift space clustering of biased tracers in modified gravity

We extend the scale-dependent Gaussian Streaming Model (GSM) to produce analytical predictions for the anisotropic redshift-space correlation function for biased tracers in modified gravity models. Employing the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (CLPT) re-summation scheme, with a local Lagrangian bias schema provided by the peak-background split formalism, we predict the necessary ingredients that enter the GSM, the real-space halo pairwise velocity and the pairwise velocity dispersion. We further consider effective field theory contributions to the pairwise velocity dispersion in order to model correctly its large scale behavior. We apply our method on two widely-considered modified gravity models, the chameleon-screened ƒ(R) Hu-Sawicki model and the nDGP Vainshtein model and compare our predictions against state-of-the-art N-body simulations for these models. We demonstrate that the GSM approach to predict the monopole and the quadrupole of the redshift-space correlation function for halos, gives very good agreement with the simulation data, for a wide range of screening mechanisms, levels of screening and halo masses at z = 0.5 and z = 1. Our work shows the applicability of the GSM, for cosmologies beyond GR, demonstrating that it can serve as a powerful predictive tool for the next stage of cosmological surveys like DESI, Euclid, LSST and WFIRST.

Hazma: a python toolkit for studying indirect detection of sub-GeV dark matter

With several proposed MeV gamma-ray telescopes on the horizon, it is of paramount importance to perform accurate calculations of gamma-ray spectra expected from sub-GeV dark matter annihilation and decay. We present hazma, a python package for reliably computing these spectra, determining the resulting constraints from existing gamma-ray data, and prospects for upcoming telescopes. For high-level analyses, hazma comes with several built-in dark matter models where the interactions between dark matter and hadrons have been determined in detail using chiral perturbation theory. Additionally, hazma provides tools for computing spectra from individual final states with arbitrary numbers of light leptons and mesons, and for analyzing custom dark matter models. hazma can also produce electron and positron spectra from dark matter annihilation, enabling precise derivation of constraints from the cosmic microwave background

Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis after Planck

We assess the status of big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) in light of the final Planck data release and other recent developments, and in anticipation of future measurements. Planck data from the recombination era fix the cosmic baryon density to 0.9% precision, and now damping tail measurements determine the helium abundance and effective number of neutrinos with precision approaching that of astronomical and BBN determinations respectively. All three parameters are related by BBN. In addition, new high-redshift measurements give D/H to better precision than theoretical predictions, and new Li/H data reconfirm the lithium problem. We present new 7 Be(n, p) 7 Li rates using new neutron capture measurements; we have also examined the effect of proposed changes in the d(p, γ) 3 He rates. Using these results we perform a series of likelihood analyses. We assess BBN/CMB consistency, with attention to how our results depend on the choice of Planck data, as well as how the results depend on the choice of non-BBN, non-Planck data sets. Most importantly the lithium problem remains, and indeed is more acute given the very tight D/H observational constraints; new neutron capture data reveals systematics that somewhat increases uncertainty and thus slightly reduces but does not essentially change the problem. We confirm that d(p, γ) 3 He theoretical rates brings D/H out of agreement and slightly increases 7 Li; new experimental data are needed at BBN energies. Setting the lithium problem aside, we find the effective number of neutrino species at BBN is Nν = 2.86±0.15. Future CMB Stage-4 measurements promise substantial improvements in BBN parameters: helium abundance determinations will be competitive with the best astronomical determinations, and Neff will approach sensitivities capable of detecting the effects of Standard Model neutrino heating of the primordial plasma.

Detecting gravitational waves from cosmological phase transitions with LISA: an update

We investigate the potential for observing gravitational waves from cosmological phase transitions with LISA in light of recent theoretical and experimental developments. Our analysis is based on current state-of-the-art simulations of sound waves in the cosmic fluid after the phase transition completes. We discuss the various sources of gravitational radiation, the underlying parameters describing the phase transition and a variety of viable particle physics models in this context, clarifying common misconceptions that appear in the literature and identifying open questions requiring future study. We also present a web-based tool, PTPlot, that allows users to obtain up-to-date detection prospects for a given set of phase transition parameters at LISA.

Minimal warm inflation

Slow-roll inflation is a successful paradigm. However we find that even a small coupling of the inflaton to other light fields can dramatically alter the dynamics and predictions of inflation. As an example, the inflaton can generically have an axion-like coupling to gauge bosons. Even relatively small couplings will automatically induce a thermal bath during inflation. The thermal friction from this bath can easily be stronger than Hubble friction, significantly altering the usual predictions of any particular inflaton potential. Thermal effects suppress the tensor-to-scalar ratio r significantly, and predict unique non-gaussianities. This axion-like coupling provides a minimal model of warm inflation which avoids the usual problem of thermal backreaction on the inflaton potential. As a specific example, we find that hybrid inflation with this axion-like coupling can easily fit the current cosmological data.

Warming nuclear pasta with dark matter: kinetic and annihilation heating of neutron star crusts

Neutron stars serve as excellent next-generation thermal detectors of dark matter, heated by the scattering and annihilation of dark matter accelerated to relativistic speeds in their deep gravitational wells. However, the dynamics of neutron star cores are uncertain, making it difficult at present to unequivocally compute dark matter scattering in this region. On the other hand, the physics of an outer layer of the neutron star, the crust, is more robustly understood. We show that dark matter scattering solely with the low-density crust still kinetically heats neutron stars to infrared temperatures detectable by forthcoming telescopes. We find that for both spin-independent and spin-dependent scattering on nucleons, the crust-only cross section sensitivity is 10 -43 - 10 -41 cm 2 for dark matter masses of 100 MeV - 1 PeV, with the best sensitivity arising from dark matter scattering with a crust constituent called nuclear pasta (including gnocchi, spaghetti, and lasagna phases). For dark matter masses from 10 eV to 1 MeV, the sensitivity is 10 -39 - 10 -34 cm 2 , arising from exciting collective phonon modes in a neutron superfluid in the inner crust. Furthermore, for any s-wave or p-wave annihilating dark matter, we show that dark matter will efficiently annihilate by thermalizing just with the neutron star crust, regardless of whether the dark matter ever scatters with the neutron star core. This implies efficient annihilation in neutron stars for any electroweakly interacting dark matter with inelastic mass splittings of up to 200 MeV, including Higgsinos. We conclude that neutron star crusts play a key role in dark matter scattering and annihilation in neutron stars.

Minimal realizations of Dirac neutrino mass from generic one-loop and two-loop topologies at d =5

We carry out a systematic investigation for the minimal Dirac neutrino mass models emerging from generic one-loop and two-loop topologies that arise from d = 5 effective operator with a singlet scalar, σ. To ensure that the tree-level Dirac mass, as well as Majorana mass terms at all orders, are absent for the neutrinos, we work in the framework where the Standard Model is supplemented by the well-motivated U(1)B-L gauge symmetry. At the one-loop level, we analyze six possible topologies, out of which two of them have the potential to generate desired Dirac neutrino mass. Adopting a systematic approach to select minimal models, we construct seventeen viable one-loop Dirac neutrino mass models. By embracing a similar methodical approach at the two-loop, we work out twenty-three minimal candidates. Among the forty selected economical models, the majority of the models proposed in this work are new. In our search, we also include the scenarios where the particles in the loop carry charges under the color group. Furthermore, we discuss the possible dark matter candidates within a given model, if any, without extending the minimal particle content.

GFiRe—Gauge Field integrator for Reheating

We present a new numerical algorithm and code, GFiRe, for solving the nonlinear evolution of Abelian gauge fields coupled to complex scalar fields in homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes. We adopt a hybrid approach to solving the system: the spatial derivatives are discretized using standard Lattice Gauge Field Theory techniques, whereas the time evolution of the fields and scale factor is implemented with explicit, composite, symplectic integrators. An important property of our compound algorithm is that the discretized Gauss constraint is respected exactly, regardless of the order of the symplectic integrator. This remains true even when the background expansion is computed “self-consistently”; that is, when the expansion history is computed using spatial averaged components of the energy momentum tensor in the simulation volume. Hence, our code can also be used in cases where the fields dominate the energy density of the universe, for example, during reheating after inflation. We test the algorithm in scenarios of reheating where the inflaton is a complex scalar field with a potential ∝(2|Φ| 2 - v 2 ) 2 and is coupled to an Abelian gauge field. Tracing the evolution of the system through complex dynamics (including resonant excitation of fields, backreaction, formation of solitons, and changes in the equation of state) in a self-consistently expanding universe, we find the energy conservation violation (<10 -4 ) to be very stable and the Gauss constraint violation (<10 -6 ) to be dominated by differencing noise.
