DOE-ART HT(G)R R&D Overview

The US Government currently has no plans to finance or build advanced nuclear reactors. Instead, the DOE performs research and development to raise the technological readiness of new concepts, fuels and component materials so that private industrial partners are more likely to design and build plants. Develop technologies that can enable new concepts and designs to achieve greater levels of safety and resilience, flexibility of use, sustainability and construction or operational affordability. Collaborate with industry to identify and conduct essential research to reduce technical risk associated with advanced reactor technologies. Sustain essential technical expertise and capabilities within national laboratories, universities, and industry to perform needed research. Collaborate with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Standards Developing Organizations (ASME, ANS, ANSI, etc.) to address gaps in codes and standards to support advanced reactor designs

State-of-the-Art Techniques for Large-Scale Stochastic Unit Commitment

Recent advances in deterministic unit commitment, both formulaic and algorithmic, along with modern algorithmic approaches for stochastic programming, have enabled the solution of stochastic unit commitment problems with hundreds of scenarios on large-scale transmission networks. In this presentation, we will give an overview of these methods, including lazy transmission constraint generation, lower-bounding techniques, and heuristics, all of which can be executed in concert with customized decomposition approaches for optimization under uncertainty. We demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques on the TAMU Texas7K synthetic transmission network, leveraging realistic high-resolution forecasts based on NREL renewable resource availability data. The software leveraged for these demonstrations is available via the open-source software packages EGRET (for electrical grid optimization) and mpi-sppy (for optimization under uncertainty).

A Brief Overview of Radiochemistry: f-Element Separations: The State of the Art and Future Directions

This chapter summarizes radiochemistry and its applications with a focus on areas where computational science can be beneficial. This is presented for a target audience of computational scientists and chemists, and the general public who are interested in radiochemistry topics that may benefit from the use of computational methods. Past, present, and future applications of radiochemistry are presented along with a brief examination of the field’s workforce. Discussions of the current state of several radiochemistry specialty areas are also included. These discussions generally exemplify topics that are readily amenable to computational tools. Topics discussed include medical uses for radioactive materials and related computational needs; the current and future trends in the separations of the f-block elements; production and uses of Californium-252; and the need for exascale computing to solve current problems in the chemistry of Americium and Plutonium.

Comparison of Commercial, State-of-the-Art, Fossil-Based Hydrogen Production Technologies

NETL's Strategic Systems Analysis & Engineering (SSAE) is developing a reference study for fossil-based, commercial scale hydrogen production with a levelized cost of hydrogen (2018 $/kg) as the figure of merit. Coal/biomass gasification as well as natural gas-based technology routes (steam-methane reforming & autothermal reforming) are featured as technologies to be assessed. The final report is expected to be completed in August, 2021 -- this presentation describes the study's design in more detail as well as reports on its progress.

High-Fidelity Solar Irradiance Data: Simple Access to State-of-the-Art Information Accelerates Southeast Asia's Clean Energy Economic Transformation

High quality, robust, and reliable renewable energy resource data is foundational to climate-smart decision making, evidence-based policy planning, and clean energy investment mobilization. USAID and NREL, through the Advanced Energy Partnership for Asia, are expanding access to this critical resource data by providing free, high-fidelity solar resource data for Southeast Asia through the RE Data Explorer platform. This brief highlights several ways the Southeast Asia solar resource data has been used for power system planning and project development in the region.

Characterizing Biomass Feedstock Transport Properties Using State of the Art Imaging and Computational Techniques

The microstructure of lignocellulosic biomass determines heat and mass transfer during conversion processes. We present a novel method for characterizing the transport properties of biomass using advanced imaging and computational techniques. The microstructure of two woody feedstocks, red oak and Douglas fir, before and after pyrolysis, is revealed using X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Transport properties are calculated from the XCT images, and principal permeability tensors are calculated using an immersed boundary-based finite volume solver to model gas flow through the geometries. We observe that the permeabilities of native biomass are distinctly anisotropic, however, this anisotropy is greatly reduced after pyrolysis.

A Review on the State of the Art of Machine Learning and Satellite Imaging: Detecting Scene Changes in Selected Nuclear Fuel Cycle Datasets

The timely detection of clandestine nuclear facilities is one of the greatest challenges faced by the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA). Idaho National Laboratory is currently applying machine learning (ML) to existing satellite imagery (SI) datasets to find facilities within the nuclear fuel life cycle, with primary focus placed on identifying critical predecessor (i.e., fuel fabrication and fuel enrichment) and successor (i.e., nuclear power plants) facilities. This could provide a satellite image methodology that the IAEA could leverage to discover clandestine facilities. The work presented in this paper describes the evolution of a workflow developed by this team for object detection related to critical infrastructure by expanding that workflow for the purpose of identifying nuclear fuel cycle components and automating dependency assessments. This will be done using two methods housed within a single pipeline. The first method involves implementing a DenseNet161 convolutional neural network to classify the images and explain the results using Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME). The second method implements You Only Look Once version 5 (YoloV5), to detect objects within images, provide a probability for the detection, and provide a bounding box that corresponds to the object of interest. The results of this work are anticipated to provide a clear picture of this portion of the nuclear fuel cycle and perform as a stand-alone tool for image assessment that can be expanded to additional fuel cycle components and implemented in international safeguards and national security domains. This capability addresses the IAEA’s need to detect undeclared nuclear materials and activities within a state while encompassing the entire nuclear fuel cycle.
