Support for the 66th International Conference on Electron, Ion, and Photon Beam Technologies and Nanofabrication (Final Report)

This project aimed to enable student participation in the 66th International Conference on Electron, Ion, and Photon Beam Technologies and Nanofabrication (EIPBN). EIPBN, affectionately known as “3-Beams,” is the premier gathering of scientists and engineers who are dedicated to electron, ion and photon lithography, imaging, and analysis; nanofabrication process technologies; atomically precise fabrication; related emerging technologies; and their applications in a broad spectrum of fields. It is where top researchers from academia, government laboratories, and industries from around the world meet to present and discuss recent trends and future innovations in these technologies. The goal of the conference is to advance knowledge by enabling the exchange of information concerning advanced and emerging nanofabrication and nanomanufacturing topics and how they enable traditional and novel applications.

2024 International Conference on Ionizing Processes

This Basic Energy Sciences (BES) award provided targeted support to early-career investigators to facilitate their attendance and participation in the International Conference on Ionizing Processes (ICIP 2024), organized and hosted at the University of Notre Dame campus between August 11th and 15th, 2024. The support enabled young researchers to present their work through oral and poster presentations, engage with senior leaders in the field, and strengthen national research capabilities in radiation chemistry and related disciplines. A total of 19 young investigators from U.S. academic institutions and national laboratories received registration discounts, and 8 of them also received additional travel-offset awards. Four of the young investigators received travel offset awards without registration discounts; hence, the total number of awardees was 23. Five awards were given to young investigators from Brookhaven National Laboratory, five to Idaho National Laboratory, one to Los Alamos National Laboratory, one to Michigan State University, one to Colorado School of Mines, and 10 to Notre Dame Radiation Laboratory. Total DOE funding directly reduced financial barriers to participation, enhancing U.S. early-career representation at this important international conference.

Summary Report from the 2025 Interfaces for Energy and the Environment Conference

The inaugural Interfaces for Energy and the Environment Conference (IEEC) took place on May 19-23, 2025, at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Richland, Washington (USA). The aim of this first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary meeting was to provide a forum for participants to share the latest cutting edge experimental and computational advances in interfacial science across energy and environmental applications. The sessions below (elaborated further in the report summaries) highlighted fundamental and applied collaborative research aimed at understanding the interactions occurring at interfaces in aqueous environments, including, but not limited to, the fields of geochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, agriculture, environmental management, and catalysis. They were organized to stimulate and provide opportunities to create, renew, and deepen collaborations. The conference included activities such as oral and poster presentations, honoree mentoring session, and a team building exercise to support all career stages (detailed summaries of these activities are in the Appendices).

Outcomes of PAX sapiens-Supported Global Wildlife Data Sharing Conferences for Enhanced One Health Security (GWDSC)

Across two consecutive Global Wildlife Data Sharing Conferences supported by PAX sapiens—Year 1 (May 2024) at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Year 2 (2025) in Ciudad Real, Spain—the initiative converted wildlife data sharing from aspiration into operational reality, producing measurable impacts in platform development, data mobilization, standards harmonization, and international partnership formation. The conferences addressed a critical gap in global health security: while 75% of emerging infectious diseases affect both humans and animals and over 60% originate in wildlife, wildlife health surveillance has historically lagged behind human and agricultural sectors due to fragmented databases, inconsistent terminology, uneven capacity, and limited cross-border coordination. By convening practitioners, government agencies, international organizations, academic institutions, and NGOs, the GWDSC catalyzed trust-based relationships and practical workflows that enable earlier detection, better risk assessment, and more effective prevention of threats at the wildlife–domestic animal–human–environment interface.

Editorial: Proceedings of ICPSBBB 2018 - 2nd International Conference on Plant Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering and Biotechnology

Plant synthetic biology combines engineering principles with plant biology toward the design, construction, and testing of plants with new traits (Liu and Stewart, 2015). Synthetic biology applies engineering principles, using defined genetic parts with the aim of achieving predictable outcomes. The field aims at providing fuels, pharmaceuticals, bioactive metabolites and increased crop yield. Synthetic biology is increasingly forming a framework in genetic transformation of plants allowing us to improve traits and crop performance. The conference on Plant Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, and Biotechnology covers broad aspects of plant synthetic biology, ranging from tools to the design of predictable functions and precision genome editing, to re-designed photosynthesis, plant bioengineering techniques, and rational design of novel plant traits. This Frontiers in Plant Science virtual issue on the “Research Topic Proceedings of ICPSBBB 2018 - 2nd International Conference on Plant Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering and Biotechnology” consists of 8 publications, including four reviews and four original research articles, which fall into the following general topics: quantitative and genetic parts, evolution, expression of transgenes and epigenetic changes, engineering of stress tolerance and bioproduction.

Proceedings of the NASA Conference on Materials for Improved Fire Safety

The Manned Spacecraft Center was pleased to host the NASA Conference on Materials for Improved Fire Safety which was held on May 6 and 7, 1970. This document is a compilation of papers presented at the conference and represents the culmination of several years of effort by NASA and industry which was directed toward the common objective of minimizing the fire hazard in manned spacecraft and in some other related areas. One of the more serious problem areas in the Apollo program was the flammability of nonmetallic materials. The effective and timely solution of this problem area resulted from much of the effort reported herein and contributed greatly toward the successful achievement of landing men on the moon and returning them safely to earth.

Eighth Conference on Space Simulation

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has served as a co-sponsor of the Eighth Space Simulation Conference and has published the proceedings as a NASA Special Publication so that the information presented would be available as a permanent record and as a reference source for persons interested in the technologies. This conference provided an international forum for the discussion of the state of the art in space simulation, contamination, biosciences, and flammability. It is through this forum that many persons with differing interests and responsibilities in the aerospace research, development, and testing programs have been brought together for the interchange of knowledge in areas which affect them all. The NASA is again pleased to present, with the Institute of Environmental Sciences, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the American Society for Testing and Materials, this important material and to make it accessible to the greater scientific community as a NASA publication.
