New insight into strain and composition of BaZrO 3 nanorods in REBCO superconductor

We report on strain and composition effects associated with growth of self-assembled BaZrO 3 (BZO) nanorods in REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–δ (REBCO) superconductors (RE = rare earth = Y and Gd), which have a profound effect on flux pinning and in-field critical current performance. The a-b plane mismatch between BZO and REBCO is never fully coherently accommodated. Instead, the nanorods always assume a size at least one unit cell smaller than the corresponding 'hole' in the REBCO matrix, thus providing deep minima of in-plane mismatch strain. Next, we show that the nominal BZO nanorods are in fact solid solution Ba 2+ (Zr 4+ 1–z RE 3+ z )O 3–δ perovskite, thus strongly affecting the stoichiometry and relative amounts of REBCO and BZO. We demonstrate that by varying only the Ba content in the nominal composition of 15 mol.% BZO + REBCO, the unit cell density of BZO can be tuned from 5% to 23%, and the linear density of RE 2 O 3 (REO) precipitates from 18 to 1 μm –1 . Furthermore, the results explain the wide range of pinning performances observed for the same nominal amount of Zr addition and provide insight into the mechanisms behind the complex phenomenon of growth of nanorods by self-assembly in REBCO superconductors.

Surface superconductivity in the type II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe 4

The search for unconventional superconductivity in Weyl semimetal materials is currently an exciting pursuit, since such superconducting phases could potentially be topologically non-trivial and host exotic Majorana modes. The layered material TaIrTe 4 is a newly predicted time-reversal invariant type II Weyl semimetal with the minimum number of Weyl points. Here, we report the discovery of surface superconductivity in Weyl semimetal TaIrTe 4 . Our scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) visualizes Fermi arc surface states of TaIrTe 4 that are consistent with the previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results. By a systematic study based on STS at ultralow temperature, we observe uniform superconducting gaps on the sample surface. The superconductivity is further confirmed by electrical transport measurements at ultralow temperature, with an onset transition temperature (T c ) up to 1.54 K being observed. The normalized upper critical field h*(T/T c ) behavior and the stability of the superconductivity against the ferromagnet indicate that the discovered superconductivity is unconventional with the p-wave pairing. The systematic STS, and thickness- and angular-dependent transport measurements reveal that the detected superconductivity is quasi-1D and occurs in the surface states. The discovery of the surface superconductivity in TaIrTe 4 provides a new novel platform to explore topological superconductivity and Majorana modes.

Cryogenic growth of aluminum: Structural morphology, optical properties, superconductivity, and microwave dielectric loss

We explore the molecular beam epitaxy synthesis of superconducting aluminum thin films grown on c-plane sapphire substrates at cryogenic temperatures of 6 K and compare their behavior with films synthesized at room temperature. We demonstrate that cryogenic growth increases structural disorder, producing crystalline grains that modify the optical, electrical, and superconducting properties of aluminum. We observe that cryogenic deposition changes the color of aluminum from fully reflective to yellow and correlate the pseudodielectric function and reflectance with structural changes in the film. We find that smaller grain sizes enhance the superconductivity of aluminum, increasing its critical temperature and critical field. We then estimate the superconducting gap and coherence length of Cooper pairs in aluminum in the presence of disorder. In conclusion, we fabricate superconducting microwave resonators on these films and find that, independently of the growth temperature, the system is dominated by two-level system loss with similar quality factors in the high- and low-power regimes. We further measure a higher kinetic inductance in the cryogenically grown films.

Magnetic and superconducting anisotropy in Ni-doped RbEuFe 4 As 4 single crystals

We investigate the effect of Ni doping on the Fe site in single crystals of the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe 4 As 4 for doping concentrations of up to 4%. A clear suppression in the superconducting transition temperature is observed in specific-heat, resistivity, and magnetization measurements. Upon Ni doping, the resistivity curves shift up in a parallel fashion, indicating a strong increase of the residual resistivity due to scattering by charged dopant atoms while the shape of the curve and thus the electronic structure appear largely unchanged. The observed step Delta C/T c at the superconducting transition decreases strongly for increasing Ni doping in agreement with expectations based on a model of multiband superconductivity and strong interband pairing. The upper critical field slopes are reduced upon Ni doping for in-plane as well as out-of-plane fields, leading to a small reduction in the superconducting anisotropy. The specific-heat measurements of the magnetic transition reveal the same Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior close to the transition temperature T m for all doping levels. The transition temperature is essentially unchanged upon doping. The in-plane to out-of-plane anisotropy of Eu magnetism observed at small magnetic fields is unaltered as compared to the undoped compound. In conclusion, all of these observations indicate a decoupling of the Eu magnetism from superconductivity and essentially no influence of Ni doping on the Eu magnetism in this compound.

Nodeless Superconducting Gap in the Candidate Topological Superconductor Sn{sub 1-x}In{sub x}Te for x=0.7.

High-pressure synthesis techniques have allowed for the growth of Sn1-xInxTe samples beyond the ambient In-saturation limit of x = 0.5 (T-c similar to 4.5 K). In this study we present measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth Delta lambda(T) in this superconducting doped topological insulator for x = 0.7, where T-c(,onset) approximate to 5 K. The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity A(2u), pairing; however, odd-parity A(1u) in pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Possible signatures of mixed-parity superconductivity in doped polar SrTi O 3 films

Superconductors that possess both broken spatial inversion symmetry and spin-orbit interactions exhibit a mix of spin singlet and triplet pairing. In this work, we report on measurements of the superconducting properties of electron-doped, strained SrTiO 3 films. These films have an enhanced superconducting transition temperature and were previously shown to undergo a transition to a polar phase prior to becoming superconducting. We show that some films show signatures of an unusual superconducting state, such as an in-plane critical field that is higher than both the paramagnetic and orbital pair breaking limits. Furthermore, nonreciprocal transport, which reflects the ratio of odd versus even pairing interactions, is observed. Together, these characteristics indicate that these films provide a tunable platform for investigations of unconventional superconductivity.

Superconductivity in single crystals of ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73

Results are reported for single crystals of the PbFCl-type layered compound ZrP 1.27 Se 0.73 that were produced using the iodine vapor transport method. Electrical transport, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal disordered metallic behavior and the occurrence of bulk superconductivity, with a transition temperature (T c ) of 7.1 K and an anisotropic orbitally limited upper critical field. 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements provide additional microscopic information, where the line shape, Knight shift, and spin-lattice relaxation data are consistent with the superconductivity originating from the corrugated Zr-P(2c)/Se plane. This suggests that the superconductivity first forms in the corrugated plane and the bulk superconductivity eventually occurs via coupling between the square planar layers. These data also show that either there are multiple superconducting gaps or there is a single gap that does not fully open across the entire Fermi surface. Finally, these results clarify the superconducting state in this material and will enable further measurements that require single-crystal specimens.

Strong-coupling anisotropic s-wave superconductivity in the type-II Weyl semimetal TaIrTe 4

TaIrTe 4 is a recently discovered type-II Weyl semimetal, hosting only four Weyl points. In this work, we study the cleaved TaIrTe 4 crystal using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and find that it also hosts a superconducting state with a transition temperature of 3.9 K. From Dynes function fitting, the superconducting phase is consistent with anisotropic s-wave pairing, with a superconducting gap of 1.31 meV. This value leads to a value of 2Δ max /k B T C = 7.81 , much larger than the 3.53 predicted by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory for weak-coupling superconductors. The critical field is found to be 0.7 T based on the analysis of tunneling conductance as a function of magnetic field. Two types of nonmagnetic defects on the TaIrTe 4 surface are observed, neither of which induce bound states inside the superconducting gap, further supporting conventional s-wave superconductivity in the TaIrTe 4 system.

Structural and magnetic transitions in the planar antiferromagnet Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

We report the structural and magnetic ground state properties of the monoclinic compound barium iridium oxide Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 using a combination of resonant x-ray scattering, magnetometry, and thermodynamic techniques. Magnetic susceptibility exhibits a pronounced antiferromagnetic transition at T N ≈ 25 K, a weaker anomaly at T S ≈ 142 K, and strong magnetic anisotropy at all temperatures. Resonant elastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a second order structural phase transition at T S and a magnetic transition at T N . Both structural and magnetic superlattice peaks are observed at L = half integer values. The magnetization anomaly at T S implies the presence of magnetoelastic coupling, which conceivably facilitates the symmetry lowering. Mean field critical scattering is observed above T S . The magnetic structure of the antiferromagnetic ground state is discussed based on the measured magnetic superlattice peak intensity. Furthermore, our study not only presents essential information for understanding the intertwined structural and magnetic properties in Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 but also highlights the necessary ingredients for exploring novel ground states with octahedra trimers.

Visualizing superconductivity in a doped Weyl semimetal with broken inversion symmetry

The Weyl semimetal Mo Te 2 offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5 K, but suppresses the T d structure phase that is essential for the emergence of the Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of the possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the T d phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to study an optimally doped superconductor Mo Te 1.85 Se 0.15 with bulk T c ~ 1.5 K . By means of quasiparticle interference imaging, we identify the existence of a low-temperature T d phase with broken inversion symmetry where superconductivity globally coexists. Furthermore, we find that the superconducting coherence length, extracted from both the upper critical field and the decay of density of states near a vortex, is much larger than the characteristic length scale of the existing chemical disorder. Overall, our findings of robust superconductivity arising from a Weyl semimetal normal phase in Mo Te 1.85 Se 0.15 make it a promising candidate for realizing topological superconductivity.

Electronic and topological properties of the van der Waals layered superconductor PtTe

We report the crystal growth and structural and electronic properties of superconducting, van der Waals layered PtTe. Easily cleavable crystals with a platelike morphology consistent with the layered structure were grown from a platinum-rich flux. A consistent determination of T c = 0.57 K is made from the onset of diamagnetism, the zero of resistivity, and the midpoint of the heat-capacity jump. The observed behavior is consistent with type-II superconductivity, with upper critical field at T = 0 estimated using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theory to be 143 and 65 Oe for fields out of and in the plane, respectively. The heat-capacity discontinuity is close to the weak-coupling BCS value. Density-functional theory calculations and analysis of the electronic structure finds that PtTe is a topological semimetal with numerous surface states but suggests that the superconducting state itself may be topologically trivial. Additionally, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a normal-state Fermi surface in remarkable agreement with theory and confirms the overall topological nature of the material by experimental identification of the surface bands. Together, these findings identify PtTe as an interesting example of a cleavable, topological, and superconducting material.

The results indicate fully gapped BCS-like behavior, ruling out odd-parity topologically nontrivial A 2u , pairing, however, odd-parity A 1u , pairing is still possible. Critical field values measured below 1 K and other superconducting parameters are also presented.

Quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surface of superconducting line-nodal metal CaSb 2

We report on the Fermi surfaces and superconducting parameters of CaSb 2 single crystals (superconducting below T c ~1.8K) grown by the self-flux method. The frequency of de Haas–van Alphen and Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations evidences a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Fermi surface, consistent with one of the Fermi surfaces forming Dirac lines predicted by first-principles calculations. Measurements in the superconducting state reveal that CaSb 2 is close to a type-I superconductor with the Ginzburg-Landau parameter of around unity. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field H c2 is well described by a model considering two superconducting bands, and the enhancement of the effective mass estimated from H c2 (0K) is consistent with the quasi-2D band observed by the quantum oscillations. Our results indicate that a quasi-2D band forming Dirac lines contributes to the superconductivity in CaSb 2 .

Orbital-induced crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase into Abrikosov-like states.

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can emerge in superconductors for which the orbital critical field exceeds the Pauli limit. Here, we present angular-resolved specific-heat data of the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor ??-(ET)2Cu(NCS )2 , with a focus on high fields in the regime of the FFLO transition. For an increasing out-of-plane tilt of the applied magnetic field, which leads to an increase of orbital contributions, we found that the nature of the superconducting transition changes from second to first order and that a further transition appears within the high-field superconducting phase. However, the superconducting state above the Pauli limit is stable for field tilt of several degrees. Since any finite perpendicular component of the magnetic field necessarily leads to quantization of the orbital motion, the resulting vortex lattice states compete with the modulated order parameter of the FFLO state leading to complex high-field superconducting phases. By solving the linearized self-consistency equation within weak-coupling BCS theory, we show that our results are clear experimental evidence of an orbital-induced transformation of the FFLO order parameter into Abrikosov-like states of higher Landau levels.

Ferroelectricity and superconductivity in strained Eu x Sr 1 – x TiO 3 films

The superconducting transition of SrTiO 3 can be influenced by tuning its ferroelectric transition, but the underlying reasons remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate compressively strained, Sm-doped films of Eu x Sr 1-x TiO 3 that were grown by molecular beam epitaxy to determine the effect of alloying with Eu on both superconductivity and ferroelectricity, both of which are present in strained SrTiO 3 films. Remarkably, superconductivity survives up to x = 0.14. Films at the lowest alloy concentration studied here, x = 0.09, exhibit no suppression of their superconducting transition temperature, but a strong reduction of the upper critical field (H c2 ), compared to non-alloyed, strained SrTiO 3 films. In addition, these films lack the sharp ferroelectric transition that appears in films without Eu in second harmonic generation measurements. Here, we postulate that Eu-alloying causes a crossover from a globally ordered ferroelectric state to one with only short-range polar order. We discuss the connection between the loss of global polar order and the change in the superconducting properties.

Superconducting properties and gap structure of the topological superconductor candidate Ti 3 Sb

Here, we present a study of the superconducting properties of the candidate topological superconductor Ti 3 Sb. Electrical transport measurements show zero resistance with a T c,onset of ≈ 5.9 K with a transition width ΔT c ≈ 0.6 K. The superconducting phase boundaries as derived from magnetotransport and magnetic susceptibility measurements agree well. We estimate an upper critical field B c2 (0) ≈ 4.5 T. A Ginzburg-Landau (GL) analysis yields values of the coherence length and penetration depth of ξ = 6.2 nm and λ = 340 nm, respectively, and a GL parameter κ ≈ 55, indicating extreme type-II behavior. Furthermore, we observe a step height in the specific heat $\frac{Δ C_e}{γ T_c}$ ≈ 1.61 ± 0.24 (with T c = 4.8 ± 0.4 K), a value larger than the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer value of 1.43, suggesting modest coupling. Measurements of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth via the tunnel-diode oscillator technique down to ≈ 450 mK show a full superconducting gap, consistent with a conventional s-wave gap structure.

Scaling behavior of order parameters for the hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca, Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7

Here, we show that in contrast to the conventional view of a mean-field Landau-type behavior, the oxygen octahedral tilt ($\textit{R}$) and polarization (P) in the $A_3B_2\text{O}_7$ Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr) 3 Ti 2 O 7 exhibits the scaling behavior of a 2D Ising class near the para-to-ferroelectric transition temperature ($T_c$). We also show that $\textit{P}$ exhibits an additional transition from a 2D Ising to a 3D mean-field critical behavior at a temperature $T_{\text{d}} < T_{\text{c}}$, which is driven by enhanced interlayer dipolar correlations due to an increase in the ferroelectrically active $\textit{B}$-site centered dipoles.

Suppression of metal-to-insulator transition and stabilization of superconductivity by pressure in Re 3 Ge 7

The effect of pressure on the low-temperature states of the Re 3 ⁡Ge 7 is investigated by both electrical and Hall resistance and magnetization measurements. At ambient pressure, the temperature-dependent resistance of Re 3 ⁡Ge 7 behaves quasilinearly from room temperature down to 60 K, then undergoes a two-step metal-to-insulator transition (MIT) at temperatures T 1 =59.4K and T 2 =58.7K, which may be related to a structural phase transition or occurrence of charge-density wave ordering. Upon applying pressure, the two-step (T 1 ,T 2 ) MIT splits into three steps (T 1 ,T 2 . and T 3 ) above 1 GPa, and all traces of MITs are fully suppressed by ~8 GPa. Subsequently, the onset of bulk superconductivity (SC) occurs between 10.8 and 12.2 GPa and persists to our highest pressure of 26.8 GPa. At 12.2 GPa the superconducting transition temperature, T c , and upper critical field, H c ⁢2 reach the maximum of T c (onset) ~5.9 K and H c ⁢2 (1.8 K) ~14 kOe. Finally, our results not only present the observation of SC under high pressure in Re 3 ⁡Ge 7 but also delineate the interplay between SC and other competing electronic states by creating a T-p phase diagram for this potentially topologically nontrivial system Re 3 ⁡Ge 7 .
