Magnetic excitations in the double-perovskite iridates La 2 M IrO 6 ( M = Co , Ni , and Zn ) mediated by 3 d – 5 d hybridization

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir L 3 edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double-perovskite iridate single crystals, La 2 MIrO 6 (M=Co,Ni,and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at ~42(6) meV and ~35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3d ions, La 2 CoIrO 6 and La 2 NiIrO 6 , respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La 2 ZnIrO 6 in which the 3d ions are nonmagnetic, suggesting the importance of 3d–5d hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double-perovskite iridates. Furthermore, the magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

Elastic differential cross-section ${\mathrm{d}}\sigma /{\mathrm{d}}t$ at $\sqrt{s}=2.76\hbox {TeV}$ and implications on the existence of a colourless C-odd three-gluon compound state

The proton-proton elastic differential cross section dσ/dt has been measured by the TOTEM experiment at √ s = 2.76 TeV energy with β* = 11 m beam optics. The Roman Pots were inserted to 13 times the transverse beam size from the beam, which allowed to measure the differential cross-section of elastic scattering in a range of the squared four-momentum transfer (|t|) from 0.36 GeV 2 to 0.74 GeV 2 . The differential cross-section can be described with an exponential in the |t|-range between 0.36 and 0.54 GeV 2 , followed by a diffractive minimum (dip) at |t dip | = (0.61 ± 0.03) GeV 2 and a subsequent maximum (bump). The ratio of the dσ/dt at the bump and at the dip is 1.7±0.2. When compared to the proton–antiproton measurement of the D0 experiment at √ s = 1.96 TeV, a significant difference can be observed. Under the condition that the effects due to the energy difference between TOTEM and D0 can be neglected, the result provides evidence for a colourless C-odd three-gluon bound state exchange in the t-channel of the proton-proton and proton–antiproton elastic scattering.

18.6% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by a Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Based on Benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisthiazole

The limited selection of wide bandgap polymer donors for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is a bottleneck problem restricting their further development and remains poorly studied. In this work, a new wide bandgap polymer, namely PBBTz-Cl, is designed and synthesized by bridging the benzobisthiazole acceptor block and chlorinated benzodithiophene donor block with thiophene units for application as an electron donor in all-PSCs. PBBTz-Cl not only possesses wide bandgap and deep energy levels but also displays strong absorption, high-planar structure, and good crystallinity, making it a promising candidate for application as a polymer donor in organic solar cells. When paired with the narrow bandgap polymer acceptor PY-IT, a fibril-like morphology forms, which facilitates exciton dissociation and charge transport, contributing to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.15% of the corresponding all-PSCs. Moreover, when introducing another crystalline polymer acceptor BTP-2T2F into the PBBTz-Cl:PY-IT host blend, the absorption ditch in the range of 600–750 nm is filled, and the blend morphology is further optimized with the trap density reducing. As a result, the ternary blend all-PSCs achieve a significantly improved PCE of 18.60%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs to date.

Beyond the universal Dyson singularity for 1-D chains with hopping disorder

We study a simple non-interacting nearest neighbor tight-binding model in one dimension with disorder, where the hopping terms are chosen randomly. This model exhibits a well-known singularity at the band center both in the density of states and localization length. If the probability distribution of the hopping terms is well-behaved, then the singularities exhibit universal behavior, the functional form of which was first discovered by Freeman Dyson in the context of a chain of classical harmonic oscillators. We show here that this universal form can be violated in a tunable manner if the hopping elements are chosen from a divergent probability distribution. We also demonstrate a connection between a breakdown of universality in this quantum problem and an analogous scenario in the classical domain — that of random walks and diffusion with anomalous exponents.

1-D NiO nanorods pillared 2-D MnO 2 nanosheets as lithium-free cathode materials for charged-state lithium batteries

Theoretically monolayer MnO 2 sheets have an impressive high capacity of 616 mAh/g, but practically monolayer MnO 2 sheets have poor performances due partially to monolayer restacking. In this paper, we report the preparation of three-dimensional porous NiO nanorod pillared δ-MnO 2 nanosheets as integrated nanoarchitectures as lithium-free cathode materials. The as-synthesized NiO pillared δ-MnO 2 nanosheets have resulted in a moderately high specific capacity of 185 mA h g –1 , with more than 63% capacity retention after 200 cycles. In comparison, 2D MnO 2 nanosheets without NiO pillared structures only achieved a low initial capacity of 137 mA h g –1 , with just 17% capacity retention after 200 cycles. The dramatically improved electrochemical performances could be attributed to high surface areas with excellent porosity which provides more electrochemically active sites and thermodynamically favorable insertion pathways for the lithium ions. Furthermore, our results reveal that insertion of pillars is a promising strategy to explore in order to mitigate the restacking issues and achieve electrochemical performances close to theoretical values for monolayer MnO 2 .
