Model Validation and Uncertainty Quantification on the KRUSTY Microreactor Design Using GRIFFIN Neutron Transport Code [Poster]

Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and INL have developed a GRIFFIN steady state neutronics model for the multiphysics simulations of the Kilopower Reactor Using Sterling TechnologY (KRUSTY) microreactor in the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). The reliability of such deterministic neutronics models can be validated by comparing with computations from Monte Carlo codes (e.g. MCNP, SERPENT, OpenMC, Shift, etc). Furthermore, potential modeling/design improvements can be identified by incorporating uncertainty quantification (UQ), which can be performed by MOOSE’s Stochastic Tools Module (STM). KRUSTY is a prototype for a 5-kW thermal nuclear-powered space reactor. Its primary components consist of nuclear fuel, heat pipes, a control rod, a reflector, and the shielding. The fuel consists of 3 stacked U-7.65Mo cylinders with a hole in the center for the control rod. 8 liquid sodium heat pipes transfer fission energy from the solid fuel block to the Sterling power conversion system where the energy is extracted, and the cooled sodium flows back to the core via capillary action . The movable Boron Carbide control rod regulates the neutron population during startup or when a reactor temperature boost is needed . The beryllium oxide reflector is in 3 places in the reactor; it surrounds the core axially, it lies beneath the core on a platen, and it is present in the shim. The axial and lower reflectors rest on an adjustable stainless-steel platen that moves upward to cover the fuel and help the reactor reach criticality. Lastly, radial stainless steel surrounds the core offering protection from radiation exposure .

Flexible Pilot Jobs Framework for Distributed High Throughput Computing

Experimental particle physics has been at the forefront of analyzing the world’s largest datasets for decades. The high-energy physics (HEP) community was among the first to develop suitable software and computing tools for this purpose. GlideinWMS is a Glidein-based workload management system whose purpose is to provide experiments like CMS at CERN, DUNE at Fermilab, and others, a way to access and efficiently use vast amounts of computing resources. This system wants to provide a simple way to submit jobs to a set of computing resources, that will be provided to users behind the scenes. Glideins are the pilot jobs executed on the worker nodes at the grid sites, performing operations such as hardware detection, environment setup, and error handling. After all these operations, they will launch the actual user job. Many grid sites are supported, such as shared clusters, Google CE, and AWS. My internship aimed to design and code a flexible pilot jobs framework that will replace the one used by GlideinWMS, developing a modular and flexible skeleton of the Glidein and adding further functionalities. My project also focused on the application of machine learning techniques as support to this management system.

A Perspective of Decarbonization Pathways in Future Buildings in the United States

The commitment of electrification and decarbonization goals in the United States (U.S.) will significantly change the performance of future buildings. To meet these goals, it is critical to summarize the existing research related to building electrification and decarbonization and discuss future research pathways. This paper provides a perspective on decarbonization pathways of future buildings in the U.S. A critical review of the existing research was conducted, which is divided into three closely linked categories: technologies, economic impacts, and code regulations. Technologies support investments and code regulations while marketing affects the design of building codes and standards. In the meantime, code regulations guide the development of technologies and marketing. Based on the review, future potential research directions for building decarbonization are then discussed. Due to the needs of building decarbonization, future research will be multidisciplinary, conducted at a large geographic scale, and involve a multitude of metrics, which will undoubtedly introduce new challenges. The perspective presented in this paper will provide policy-makers, researchers, building owners, and other stakeholders with a way to understand the impact of electrification and decarbonization of future buildings in the U.S.

Octofitter: Fast, Flexible, and Accurate Orbit Modeling to Detect Exoplanets

As next-generation imaging instruments and interferometers search for planets closer to their stars, they must contend with increasing orbital motion and longer integration times. These compounding effects make it difficult to detect faint planets but also present an opportunity. Increased orbital motion makes it possible to move the search for planets into the orbital domain, where direct images can be freely combined with the radial velocity and proper motion anomaly, even without a confirmed detection in any single epoch. In this paper, we present a fast and differentiable multimethod orbit-modeling and planet detection code called Octofitter. This code is designed to be highly modular and allows users to easily adjust priors, change parameterizations, and specify arbitrary function relations between the parameters of one or more planets. Octofitter further supplies tools for examining model outputs including prior and posterior predictive checks and simulation-based calibration. We demonstrate the capabilities of Octofitter on real and simulated data from different instruments and methods, including HD 91312, simulated JWST/NIRISS aperture masking interferometry observations, radial velocity curves, and grids of images from the Gemini Planet Imager. We show that Octofitter can reliably recover faint planets in long sequences of images with arbitrary orbital motion. This publicly available tool will enable the broad application of multiepoch and multimethod exoplanet detection, which could improve how future targeted ground- and space-based surveys are performed. Finally, its rapid convergence makes it a useful addition to the existing ecosystem of tools for modeling the orbits of directly imaged planets.

WIPP Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS) Quality Assurance Program - 20237

Construction and major equipment fabrication are underway for a new ventilation exhaust system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). The new system will provide continuous HEPA filtration of the exhaust from the WIPP underground while meeting the ventilation demands for expanded waste emplacement and mining operations over the next 40 years. The SSCVS project has proceeded with the awarding of CD-3A for Long Lead Procurements followed by CD-2/3 approval for the construction of the facilities. The SSCVS project team made the decision to increase the quality oversight throughout the complete project per the Project Quality Assurance Plan (PQAP) such that it can ensure the final products meet applicable NQA-1 requirements and general quality requirements, and that the project will proceed to operations without significant delays due to post installation quality concerns. The PQAP was established prior to approval of the project at the CD-2/3 milestone. The SSCVS project has 2 major long lead procurements which commenced with the awarding of CD-3A. These procurements include the HEPA filter housing assemblies and the Exhaust Fans. There are 22 HEPA filter assemblies for the SSCVS, which are designated Safety Significant for pressure boundary confinement, per the approved PDSA. The exhaust fans also have Safety Significant components to maintain the pressure confinement boundary. NWP made the decision to install resident Quality Inspectors at the fabrication facilities to ensure the documentation for each fabricated unit meets all the QA requirements as defined in the respective contract documents. For the construction of the SSCVS Salt Reduction Building (SRB) and New Filter Building (NFB), dedicated, on-site quality inspectors have been utilized to ensure that all work being performed will comply with quality requirements and the Special Inspections as defined in IBC-2015. At each stage of inspection, hold points are placed into the work packages to ensure NWP QA personnel are present to inspect and verify the installations are in accordance with the design specifications, codes and standards. With this level of oversight, NWP anticipates that the level of quality related issues, as seen on multiple other DOE complex site projects, will be avoided and that the commissioning, start-up and hot operations will progress in a timely fashion, as all documentation will be in place and approved prior to initiation of these activities. Preliminary description of a new creep-fatigue design method that reduces over conservatism and simplifies the high temperature design process

The report provides the initial description of a new creep-fatigue design method for structural components in high temperature nuclear service. The new method is based on an integrated elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis and Simplified Model Test (SMT) approach that reduces over conservatism, improves the treatment of elastic follow up, and simplifies the design procedure, when compared with the current creep-fatigue design methods in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Developing the design charts for the EPP-SMT design method requires extrapolating SMT test data as a function of hold time and follow up factor. The report develops the preliminary design charts for Alloy 617 at temperatures between 800°C and 950°C by combining two extrapolation approaches developed in a previous work. The report also presents a comparative analysis between the EPP-SMT design method and the current ASME creep-fatigue design methods by evaluating design life of two sample geometries under different loading conditions. Results from the comparative analysis verify the EPP-SMT design charts but suggest the requirement of additional test data in the low strain range regime for improving the extrapolation procedure that will further reduce the over conservatism in the creep-fatigue damage evaluation. The report also concludes that the EPP-SMT design procedure can account for effect of primary load on creep-fatigue life by using a fixed, bounding value of follow up in constructing the design charts. The conclusions to this report describe the future work required to complete this new design method so it can be codified through a nuclear Code Case.

A Hardware and Software Co-design Framework for Energy Efficient Neuromorphic Systems

Neuromorphic systems can be realized by a variety of algorithms and architectures. A common understanding is that spiking neuromorphic designs, which encode information into spatio-temporal spiking events, are both a biologically-accurate and efficient way of processing information. However, representing the information through timing relationships induces sophisticated circuit designs in traditional CMOS-based implementations. In recent years, high-capacity resistive memory (RRAM, aka, memristor) has demonstrated great potential in mimicking synaptic behaviors. Several RRAM-based spiking neuromorphic designs exist, most of which focus on rate coding schemes. These designs simplify circuit implementations of neuron models and explore challenges such as unsatisfactory speed, resolution, and performance. As an alternative, we will explore temporal coding spiking neuromorphic systems that encode information as the relative timing of neuron activations (spikes), which have been proven to be more adaptive and energy-efficient. Developing a neuromorphic system for spiking neural network (SNN) inference and online training, however, faces some major technical challenges: (1) It lacks circuit implementation support for temporal-coding SNN to achieve satisfying power efficiency and accuracy; (2) Although existing research works have investigated memristive synapse and neuron designs for spike-timing-dependent plasticity, the non-ideal conditions in implementation, such as device variations and signal degradation, degrade online learning accuracy of large scale systems; and (3) Non-optimized, inter-layer data traffic in SNNs, leads to unnecessary data communication costs. In this project, we plan to address these challenges by a hardware and software co-design framework that incorporates solutions at the circuit, architecture, and algorithm levels. At the circuit-level, we will elaborate on the in-situ SNN processing element designs for supporting both inference and online training modes. Variation-aware schemes will be studied to improve reliability. At the architecture level, we propose a pipelined, asynchronous architecture to retain the timing resolution of spikes. At the algorithm level, we will investigate an innovative SNN training algorithm for enabling activation sparsification and reducing unnecessary data communication costs. This neuromorphic system will provide an effective solution to real-life energy-constrained applications and significantly contribute to the exploration of next-generation high-performance computing systems under the DOE context.

PICSAR-QED: a Monte Carlo module to simulate strong-field quantum electrodynamics in particle-in-cell codes for exascale architectures

Abstract Physical scenarios where the electromagnetic fields are so strong that quantum electrodynamics (QED) plays a substantial role are one of the frontiers of contemporary plasma physics research. Investigating those scenarios requires state-of-the-art particle-in-cell (PIC) codes able to run on top high-performance computing (HPC) machines and, at the same time, able to simulate strong-field QED processes. This work presents the PICSAR-QED library, an open-source, portable implementation of a Monte Carlo module designed to provide modern PIC codes with the capability to simulate such processes, and optimized for HPC. Detailed tests and benchmarks are carried out to validate the physical models in PICSAR-QED, to study how numerical parameters affect such models, and to demonstrate its capability to run on different architectures (CPUs and GPUs). Its integration with WarpX, a state-of-the-art PIC code designed to deliver scalable performance on upcoming exascale supercomputers, is also discussed and validated against results from the existing literature.

Structural Design and Modeling of MARVEL Primary Coolant System Using the ASME Section III, Division 5, Code

This paper presents the structural design and supporting analysis for the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) primary coolant system (PCS) using the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5, rules. MARVEL is a liquid metal–cooled microreactor intended to provide experimental capabilities for the rapid testing and development of microreactor technologies. The PCS utilizes high-temperature sodium-potassium liquid metal as the primary coolant and operates at a design temperature of 570°C, necessitating the consideration of creep-related failure mechanisms. The base metal for the PCS is 316H stainless steel, and the weldments are made with a 16-8-2 filler. The design approach incorporates the current base code rules along with ASME code cases N-924, N-861, and N-862 to address primary load, ratcheting, and creep-fatigue evaluations, respectively. The reactor’s operation involves complex thermal and mechanical interactions due to natural convective flow and differential thermal expansion between components. In conclusion, this paper discusses the structural engineering challenges encountered, such as managing thermal stresses in the distribution plenum and guard vessel, and outlines the strategies implemented to meet the code requirements, including design modifications and operational constraints.

Improving the Capabilities and Computational Efficiency of the RTE+RRTMGP Radiation Code (Final Report)

This report details progress on the RTE+RRTMGP radiation codes made during the period of performance. RTE+RRTMGP is a set of codes for computing radiative fluxes in planetary atmospheres. RRTMGP uses a k-distribution to provide an optical description (absorption and possibly Rayleigh optical depth) of the gaseous atmosphere, along with the relevant source functions, on a pre-determined spectral grid given temperatures, pressures, and gas concentration. RTE computes fluxes given spectrally-resolved optical descriptions and source functions. Spectrally-resolved fluxes are summarized (“reduced”) via a user extensible class. The initial release of the code and the design choices are described in Pincus et al. 2019; the codes are available on Github. Although RRTMGP was based on current (at the time) empirical spectroscopic data, RTE and RRTMGP were developed in large part to modernize software practices. The design focused on flexibility broadly interpreted: by separating code from data and allowing data to drive computation; in coupling to the host model (e.g. the coupling of clouds to radiative fluxes is user-controlled); with respect to programming languages (computational tasks are accessed via widely-compatible C interfaces); and with respect to hardware (the codes run on a range of CPU and GPU architectures). The code also puts an emphasis on modularity and clarity. RTE+RRTMGP v1.0 was released in September 20219. This award supported the evolution of the RTE+RRTMGP code base to support greater flexibility, accuracy, and efficiency.
