Effects of spin-orbit interaction and electron correlations in strontium titanate

Here, we show that the Bloch states in the conduction band of SrTiO 3 arise from the interplay between highly anisotropic hopping in subbands derived from the Ti t2g orbitals and spin-orbit coupling that mixes these orbitals. Because of the nearly flat-band characteristics for one of the principal axes, at sufficiently high doping these Bloch states become unstable with respect to electron interactions, resulting in Mott-like singlet correlations. These findings may be relevant to the anomalous electronic properties of SrTiO 3 , including its unusual superconductivity.

Frustrated electron hopping from the orbital configuration in a two-dimensional lattice

Electron hopping on spatially periodic lattices gives rise to intriguing electronic behaviour. For example, hopping on the geometrically frustrated two-dimensional kagome, dice and Lieb lattices yields electronic band structures with both massless Dirac-like and perfectly dispersion-less, flat bands. As materials featuring the dice and Lieb lattice structures are scarce, an alternative approach proposes to leverage atomic orbitals to realize the characteristic electron hopping of geometrically frustrated lattices. This strategy promises to expand the list of candidate materials with frustrated electron hopping, but is yet to be shown in experiments. Here, in this study, we demonstrate frustrated hopping in the van der Waals intermetallic Pd 5 AlI 2 , emerging from the arrangement of atomic orbitals in a primitive square lattice. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation measurements, we reveal that the band structure of Pd 5 AlI 2 includes linear Dirac-like bands intersected at their crossing point by a locally flat band—an essential characteristic of frustrated hopping in Lieb and dice lattices. Moreover, this compound shows exceptional chemical stability, with its unusual bulk band structure and metallicity persisting in ambient conditions down to the monolayer limit. Hence, our results showcase a way to realize electronic structures characteristic of geometrically frustrated lattices in non-frustrated systems.

Effects of the solar wind on magnetospheric dynamics: Energetic electrons at the synchronous orbit

A correlation of the observations of energetic electron fluxes at the synchronous orbit with the interplanetary medium and the behavior of energetic trapped radiation at the synchronous altitude were analyzed. Data covering the 1967 to 1978 interval were obtained by the ATS 1, ATS 5, and ATS 6 spacecraft. Long term (year) and short term (days) electron flux averages are found to correlate positively with corresponding averages of the solar wind velocity.

An–imidophosphorane (An = U–Pu) bond covalency and proton-coupled electron transfer thermodynamics driven by orbital energy matching

A series of mid-actinide (An = U–Pu) tetrahomoleptic complexes supported by highly electron-donating imidophosphorane ligands, NPC ([NP t Bu(pyrr) 2 ] − , where t Bu = C(CH 3 ) 3 ; pyrr = pyrrolidinyl = N(C 4 H 8 )), are systematically investigated computationally and experimentally to elucidate the nature of actinide–ligand (An–L) covalency across the An 3+/4+/5+ oxidation states. Trends in An–L bonding and redox properties for these complexes, together with their protonated counterparts, are examined using orbital-, electron density-, and energy-decomposition-based methods. This integrated approach reveals progressively improved energy matching between α-spin An 5f and N im 2p orbitals with increasing atomic number and oxidation state, becoming particularly pronounced in the ligand-dominant π-bonding orbitals of An 4+ and An 5+ . In contrast to the An 3+ species, the enhanced An 5f π contributions in the higher-valent counterparts drive the increase in An–N im covalency for later An, thereby inverting the covalency trend to U < Np < Pu. Redistribution of electron density towards the An and N im atomic basins due to the growing energy-matching assisted covalency correlates with higher pKa values and increased N im –H bond dissociation free energies in protonated An 4+ complexes. Electron density at Nim in An 4+ shows a linear correlation with the p K a values calculated via the Bordwell equation. Calculations predict a cathodic shift of 0.84–1.00 V in the redox couples upon protonation, a trend validated when experimentally accessible. These findings demonstrate an increasing role of covalency driven by orbital energy matching from U to Pu in tuning the thermodynamic driving force for proton-coupled electron transfer in the An 5+ species.

Intertwined charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom under electronic correlations in the one-dimensional Fe 3+ chalcogenide chain

Motivated by recent developments in the study of quasi-one-dimensional iron systems with Fe 2+ , we comprehensively study an Fe 3+ chalcogenide chain system. Based on first-principles calculations, the Fe 3+ chain has a similar electronic structure to that discussed before for the Fe 2+ chain, because of the similar Fe⁢𝑋 4 (𝑋 = S or Se) tetrahedron-chain geometry. Furthermore, a three-orbital electronic Hubbard model for this chain was constructed using the density matrix renormalization group method. A robust antiferromagnetic coupling was unveiled in the chain direction. In addition, in the intermediate electronic correlation 𝑈/𝑊 region, we found an interesting orbital-selective Mott phase with the coexistence of localized and itinerant electrons (𝑈 is the on-site Hubbard repulsion, while 𝑊 is the electronic bandwidth) based on the orbital-selective behavior observed in the charge fluctuations. Furthermore, we do not observe any obvious pairing tendency in the Fe 3+ chain in the electronic-correlation 𝑈/𝑊 region, where superconducting pairing tendencies were reported before in iron ladders. This suggests that superconductivity is unlikely to emerge in the Fe 3+ systems. Finally, our results clearly establish the similarities and differences between Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ iron chains, as well as iron ladders.

Energetic electron components at geosynchronous orbit

Energy distribution functions have been derived from energetic (30-2000 keV) electron fluxes observed simultaneously by three geosynchronous orbit satellites throughout the year 1986. These distributions, as well as others derived from empirical models of outer magnetospheric electron fluxes, can be resolved into two distinct relativistic Maxwellian components which are each fully parameterized by a density and a temperature. A four-parameter characterization is presented which provides a new, simplified procedure for the interpretation of energetic electron data in the outer magnetosphere.

Electron Flux Models for Different Energies at Geostationary Orbit

Forecast models were derived for energetic electrons at all energy ranges sampled by the third-generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES). These models were based on Multi-Input Single-Output Nonlinear Autoregressive Moving Average with Exogenous inputs methodologies. The model inputs include the solar wind velocity, density and pressure, the fraction of time that the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was southward, the IMF contribution of a solar wind-magnetosphere coupling function proposed by Boynton et al. (2011b), and the Dst index. As such, this study has deduced five new 1 h resolution models for the low-energy electrons measured by GOES (30-50 keV, 50-100 keV, 100-200 keV, 200-350 keV, and 350-600 keV) and extended the existing >800 keV and >2 MeV Geostationary Earth Orbit electron fluxes models to forecast at a 1 h resolution. All of these models were shown to provide accurate forecasts, with prediction efficiencies ranging between 66.9% and 82.3%.
