New efforts in improving numerical aspects of atmospheric physics parameterizations

This is an invited article for GEWEX Quarterly, the newsletter of the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) program which is a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (https://www.gewex.org/resources/gewex-news/). The article introduces recent research results and ongoing activities being carried out in a SciDAC project funded by DOE that focuses on identifying and addressing numerical issues in physics parameterizations in global atmospheric general circulation models.

Circular Economy Modeling Efforts at NREL: Circular Economy Lifecycle Analysis and Visualization (CELAVI) and the Circular Economy Agent-Based Model (ABM)

Circular Economy (CE) aims at decoupling human activities from economic growth and resource use. While CE economic and environmental benefits are often touted by its proponents, increased circularity and improved sustainability do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. The Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework simulates the transition of renewable energy technology supply chains towards circularity and quantifies spatially explicit environmental impacts and supply chain costs. Using wind blade end-of-life (EOL) management as a case study, this presentation will highlight CELAVI's features. Furthermore, envisioned extension to the framework could improve the stakeholder decision model by accounting for logistical and other factors. The CELAVI framework could be leveraged to answer crucial questions regarding renewables EOL management.

Progress Towards a Predictive Eagle Behavior and Risk Modeling Framework: Overview and Recent Validation Efforts

This presentation summarizes progress to date of the U.S. Department of Energy project, "Development of a computational framework for modeling golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) near wind farms," which focuses on stochastic behavioral modeling of soaring raptors across landscape, facility, and turbine spatiotemporal scales. This publicly available, open-source modeling framework includes behavioral models based on three different underlying principles: energy minimization at landscape scale, behavioral heuristics at landscape-facility scale, and data-driven behaviors at the facility-micro-scale. We will briefly overview the key advancements in the behavioral modeling state of the art, which leverages multiple high-resolution telemetry data sources combined with high-fidelity atmospheric flow modeling insights. We then present preliminary results from a validation study in Altamont, California. This new study involves a novel application of the Stochastic Soaring Raptor Simulator (SSRS), in a new geographic locale, to understand facility scale eagle movement patterns over time scales representative of a wind project's lifetime. For this desktop analysis (that does not depend on any high-performance computing resources), SSRS simultaneously considers a variety of wind conditions and eagle approach vectors toward a project site of interest. This work demonstrates the integration of publicly available landscape-scale atmospheric datasets, our recently improved engineering updraft models (see presentation from Thedin et al.), and our energy minimization behavioral models within the SSRS framework. While we only present results from a single behavioral model, the integration of these three modeling components forms the foundation for our more sophisticated behavioral models (see presentations from Brandes et al., Sandhu et al.) that are under active development. Results are presented in the form of presence maps, which may be applied to estimate risk to wildlife, augment ground survey data, inform wind-plant operations, or incorporated into wind-plant designs.

High Assay Low Enriched Uranium - A material in demand and the supply efforts underway

The presentation briefly describes the HALEU demand, sources of supply, & work underway @ INL to meet some of the demand. It highlights HALEU recovery from EBR-II, process enhancements including recasting via multi tier drip cast crucible method to produce reduced dose and reduced physical size uranium ingots referred to as regulus. Includes additional polishing, to improve applicability to meeting HALEU needs and briefly touches on innovative recycling concepts under development (i.e. Zircex). HALEU enables reactors of reduced size, provides for increased fuel efficiency and longer core life, all of which contribute to less waste generation. Supplying HALEU from recycled material has the potential for further reductions in waste generation through via reductions in SNF disposition.
