An embedded mesh procedure for leading-edge vortex flows

A cell-vertex scheme is outlined for solving the flow about a delta wing with M (sub infinity) is greater than 1. Embedded regions of mesh refinement allow solutions to be obtained which have much higher resolution than those achieved to date. Effects of mesh refinement and artificial viscosity on the solutions are studied, to determine at what point leading-edge vortex solutions are grid-converged. A macroscale and a microscale for the size of the vortex are defined, and it is shown that the macroscale (which includes the wing surface properties) is converged on a moderately refined grid, while the microscale is very sensitive to grid spacing. The level of numerical diffusion in the core of the vortex is found to be substantial. Comparisons with the experiment are made for two cases which have transonic cross-flow velocities.

The free-wake prediction of rotor hover performance using a vortex embedding method

A method is developed to predict the rotor hover performance. This method solves the compressible mass conservation equation much like current full potential codes and can therefore predict the transonic flows on a rotor. However, the newly developed approach also allows for the free convection of shed vorticity and permits the computation of the entire hover wake system. The method uses a vortex embedding scheme in potential flow and has been implemented in a computer code, HELIX -I. To predict power we implement a simple boundary layer and two different induced-drag integration schemes. The induced-drag is obtained from surface pressure integration and an energy flux integral. Comparisons between computations and experiment show good agreement for the prediction of power polars, surface pressure distribution, and tip vortex geometry.

Observational constraints on an embedded cloud model for the soft X-ray diffuse background

The reason for the observed anticorrelation between soft X-ray diffuse background (SXRB) and neutral hydrogen column densities are considered. Using the B and C band data from an all-sky survey of the SXRB, as well as data in the Be band, it is shown that the Jakobsen and Kahn (1986) embedded cloud model, in which several statistical properties of the SXRB in the B and C bands were used to constrain their model parameters, cannot fit the observed band ratios, except in the limit in which virtually all of the emission originates in the near side of the absorbing gas. It was also shown that model parameters corresponding to appreciably mixed emission and absorption, as proposed by Bunner et al. (1969) and Davidsen et al. (1972), do not fit the data. Model parameters corresponding to the absorption models of Bowyer et al. (1968), Bunner et al. (1969), Davidsen et al. (1972), and Yentis et al. (1972), cannot fit the data unless the absorbing material is more strongly clumped than is permitted by 21-cm observations.

Adaptive grid embedding for the two-dimensional flux-split Euler equations

A numerical algorithm is presented for solving the 2-D flux-split Euler equations using a multigrid method with adaptive grid embedding. The method uses an unstructured data set along with a system of pointers for communication on the irregularly shaped grid topologies. An explicit two-stage time advancement scheme is implemented. A multigrid algorithm is used to provide grid level communication and to accelerate the convergence of the solution to steady state. Results are presented for a subcritical airfoil and a transonic airfoil with 3 levels of adaptation. Comparisons are made with a structured upwind Euler code which uses the same flux integration techniques of the present algorithm. Good agreement is obtained with converged surface pressure coefficients. The lift coefficients of the adaptive code are within 2 1/2 percent of the structured code for the sub-critical case and within 4 1/2 percent of the structured code for the transonic case using approximately one-third the number of grid points.

Instability-related delamination growth of embedded and edge delaminations

Compressive loads can cause local buckling in composite laminates that have a near surface delamination. This buckling causes load redistribution and secondary loads, which in turn cause interlaminar stresses and delamination growth. The goal of this research was to enhance the understanding of this instability-related delamination growth in laminates containing either an embedded or an edge delamination.

Embedded adaptation for time dependent real fluid/gas flows

An embedded adaptation algorithm is used to illustrate applications and requirements for Navier-Stokes and nonequilibrium unsteady two-dimensional flow fields. Both grid refinement and equation modification are included for unstructured distributions of quadrilateral cells. Multiple refinement parameters for distinct physical phenomena serve to monitor the evolving nonuniform field and to recognize flow features in isolated and overlapping subdomains. Examples from subsonic, hypersonic, internal, and external fields show substantial advantages for the adaptive approach.

Hot interstellar gas and ionization of embedded clouds

Researchers present detailed photoionization calculations for the instellar cloud in which the Sun is embedded. They consider the EUV radiation field with contribution from discrete stellar sources and from a thermal bremsstrahlung-radiative recombination spectrum emitted from the surrounding 10 to the 6th power k coronal substrate. They establish lower limits to the fractional ionization of hydrogen and helium of 0.17 and 0.29 respectively. The high He ionization fraction results primarily from very strong line emission below 500 A originating in the surrounding coronal substrate while the H ionization is dominated by the EUV radiation from the discrete stellar sources. The dual effects of thermal conduction and the EUV spectrum of the 10 to the 6th k plasma on ionization in the cloud skin are explored. The EUV radiation field and Auger ionization have insignificant effects on the resulting ionic column densities of Si IV, C IV, N V and O VI through the cloud skin. Calculations show that the abundances of these species are dominated by collisional ionization in the thermal conduction front. Because of a low charge exchange rate with hydrogen, the ionic column density ratios of N (CIII)/N (CII) and N (NII)/N (NI) are dominated by the EUV radiation field in the local interstellar medium. These ratios should be important diagnostics for the EUV radiation field and serve as surrogate indicators of the interstellar He and H ionization fraction respectively. Spacecraft such as Lyman which is designed to obtain high resolution spectral data down to the Lyman limit at 912 A could sample interstellar lines of these ions.

The embedded objects in epsilon Cha I cloud

A study was made of the embedded objects in the epsilon Cha I cloud. General shapes of the spectra were constructed for the members in the cloud. The near infrared data were compiled from the literature and combined with the IRAS Point Source Catalog information. Pointed observations by the IRAS were used in the regions of high source density where the Point Source Catalog is confused. Member objects near the late B star HD 97300 were measured recently in the 3 to 10 micron bands using the ESO 2.2 m telescope in order to study the effects of disks seen in other young stellar objects. A picture is presented of the complete initial luminosity function in the epsilon Cha I cloud. The observations were compared with the theoretical views on low mass star formation.

On the embedding-dimension analysis of AE and AL time series

Several authors have employed the embedding-dimension method to analyze time series of geomagnetic indices, with differing results for the value of the correlation dimension nu. It is argued that these differences may arise from corresponding differences in the length and construction of the various data sets used. Practical application of the method to sets of discretized data requires use of a delay time scale set by the autocorrelation time of the data set. It is found that a particular data set containing 35 days of AE exhibits an autocorrelation time tau(c) longer by an order of magnitude than that of a short-duration (less than 5 days) set, raising the possibility that extant analyses of long-duration sets may have employed delay times shorter than tau(c). In addition, the power spectrum of AE reveals modulation at a period of 24 hr. A numerical experiment on the logistic map shows that such modulation introduces an extra degree of freedom in the data, resulting in an augmented correlation dimension.

Disordering and H-embrittlement of Pb(110) surface using embedded atom method and molecular dynamics

The dynamics and structure of the crystal melt interface are of great importance in crystal growth, melting, and other properties of the solid-liquid interface. The Embedded Atom Method (EAM), a semiempirical method developed by Daw and Baskes for determining the energetics of atoms in a bulk environment, is a useful method in the computer simulation. The EAM functions of PB in conjunction with the MD code are employed to study melting and disordering of the Pb(100) surface. The EAM functions are fitted to the bulk experimental data at zero temperature, and it is not clear if it will behave correctly at higher temperatures. In fact, it is shown that use of a similar type of potential at higher temperatures might result in a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. The primary purpose here is to perform MD simulation combined with the EAM functions of PB to study melting of the Pb(100) surface. This provides an accurate test of the EAM functions at higher temperatures. In particular, we calculate the two dimensional structure factor, the two dimensional distribution function, and density profile as a function of temperature up to the melting point of lead.

Impeller tandem blade study with grid embedding for local grid refinement

Flow non-uniformity at the discharge of high power density impellers can result in significant unsteady interactions between impeller blades and downstream diffuser vanes. These interactions result in degradation of both performance and pump reliability. The MSFC Pump Technology Team has recognized the importance of resolving this problem and has thus initiated the development and testing of a high head coefficient impeller. One of the primary goals of this program is to improve impeller performance and discharge flow uniformity. The objective of the present work is complimentary. Flow uniformity and performance gains were sought through the application of a tandem blade arrangement. The approach adopted was to numerically establish flow characteristics at the impeller discharge for the baseline MSFC impeller and then parametrically evaluate tandem blade configurations. A tandem design was sought that improves both impeller performance and discharge uniformity. The Navier-Stokes solver AEROVISC was used to conduct the study. Grid embedding is used to resolve local gradients while attempting to minimize model size. Initial results indicate that significant gains in flow uniformity can be achieved through the tandem blade concept and that blade clocking rather than slot location is the primary driver for flow uniformity.

An enhanced Ada run-time system for real-time embedded processors

An enhanced Ada run-time system has been developed to support real-time embedded processor applications. The primary focus of this development effort has been on the tasking system and the memory management facilities of the run-time system. The tasking system has been extended to support efficient and precise periodic task execution as required for control applications. Event-driven task execution providing a means of task-asynchronous control and communication among Ada tasks is supported in this system. Inter-task control is even provided among tasks distributed on separate physical processors. The memory management system has been enhanced to provide object allocation and protected access support for memory shared between disjoint processors, each of which is executing a distinct Ada program.

Dynamic characterization, monitoring and control of rotating flexible beam-mass structures via piezo-embedded techniques

A variational principle and a finite element discretization technique were used to derive the dynamic equations for a high speed rotating flexible beam-mass system embedded with piezo-electric materials. The dynamic equation thus obtained allows the development of finite element models which accommodate both the original structural element and the piezoelectric element. The solutions of finite element models provide system dynamics needed to design a sensing system. The characterization of gyroscopic effect and damping capacity of smart rotating devices are addressed. Several simulation examples are presented to validate the analytical solution.

Development of a methodology for assessing the safety of embedded software systems

A Dynamic Flowgraph Methodology (DFM) based on an integrated approach to modeling and analyzing the behavior of software-driven embedded systems for assessing and verifying reliability and safety is discussed. DFM is based on an extension of the Logic Flowgraph Methodology to incorporate state transition models. System models which express the logic of the system in terms of causal relationships between physical variables and temporal characteristics of software modules are analyzed to determine how a certain state can be reached. This is done by developing timed fault trees which take the form of logical combinations of static trees relating the system parameters at different point in time. The resulting information concerning the hardware and software states can be used to eliminate unsafe execution paths and identify testing criteria for safety critical software functions.

The embedded young stars in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. I - Models for spectral energy distributions

We describe radiative transfer calculations of infalling, dusty envelopes surrounding pre-main-sequence stars and use these models to derive physical properties for a sample of 21 heavily reddened young stars in the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud. The density distributions needed to match the FIR peaks in the spectral energy distributions of these embedded sources suggest mass infall rates similar to those predicted for simple thermally supported clouds with temperatures about 10 K. Unless the dust opacities are badly in error, our models require substantial departures from spherical symmetry in the envelopes of all sources. These flattened envelopes may be produced by a combination of rotation and cavities excavated by bipolar flows. The rotating infall models of Terebey et al. (1984) models indicate a centrifugal radius of about 70 AU for many objects if rotation is the only important physical effect, and this radius is reasonably consistent with typical estimates for the sizes of circumstellar disks around T Tauri stars.
