The Alternate Fecal Canister (AFC) is an alternative to the hard-sided Fecal Canister (FC) used by the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), to contain fecal waste, clean-up consumables, gloves and packaging materials. The AFC is constructed of a flexible, odor-tight material and can be reduced to a significantly smaller volume than the FC for launch and is significantly lighter than the FC. The project tested a wide range of materials for containing fecal waste including many used in various forms by the public, military, and aerospace industry in a variety of applications. Designed to interface with the UWMS with no modifications to the on-orbit hardware, the AFC will be tested on ISS with the UWMS in a technology demonstration (TD). This paper will summarize the feasibility testing of the candidate materials along with final selection criteria, design elements for the final configuration, and final calculations on volume and mass savings. It will provide details gleaned from the TD regarding interface with the UWMS, crew operations, and odor control effectiveness. It will also describe the technology demonstration benefits and how that data informs the Orion-installed UWMS unit and future manifesting of consumables for both Orion and ISS.

Electrified aircraft propulsion concepts are rapidly emerging due to their huge potential in fuel saving and mitigating negative environmental impact. In order to perform a linear technology progression and fairly assess the impacts of powertrain electrification, it is important to first establish parametric state-of-the-art baseline vehicle models with advanced technologies matured by 2030. For a regional turboprop (50-passenger) size class and a thin haul (19-passenger) turboprop size class, a current state-of-the-art technology reference aircraft (TRA) is identified and modeled using a multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization environment. Viable technologies for airframe and conventional propulsion system are then identified which are expected to be available by 2030. These technologies are parametrically infused in the TRA models to create advanced technology aircraft models, which will serve as the baseline models for future studies of powertrain electrification.

NASA Science and Technology Mission Directorate is investing in advancement of on-orbit cryogenic fluid management technologies by partnering with industry through Tipping Point contracts with the primary objective of reducing development costs and schedules for infusion into long duration missions utilizing cryogenic propellant. SpaceX was selected as a partner in 2020 to conduct a demonstration of CFM technologies on a Starship Mission. This presentation provides a summary of the top-level goals and objectives of this contract and how NASA has structured this partnership.
