Radiometric correction procedure study

A comparison of MSS radiometric processing techniques identified as a preferred radiometric processing technique a procedure which equalizes the mean and standard deviation of detector-specific histograms of uncalibrated scene data. Evaluation of MSS calibration data demonstrated that the relationship between detector responses is essentially linear over the range of intensities typically observed in MSS data, and that the calibration wedge data possess a high degree of temporal stability. An analysis of the preferred radiometric processing technique showed that it could be incorporated into the MDP-MSS system without a major redesign of the system, and with minimal impact on system throughput.

Flight investigation of piloting techniques and crosswind limitations using a research type crosswind landing gear

A research-type crosswind landing gear was tested in a flight program which used a light STOL transport in strong crosswind conditions. The research-type crosswind landing gear used enabled the airplane to land to crosswinds up to a magnitude of 25 to 30 knots. Three modes of landing-gear operation were investigated: preset, automatic, and castor (passive self-alignment). Actual test data and histograms are given for the 195 'visual flight rules' crosswind landings made.

Electric field measurements in the solar wind, bow shock, magnetosheath, magnetopause, and magnetosphere

Electro-field measurements are reported at 11 magnetopause crossings that occurred during a single in-bound ISEE-1 satellite pass near a local time of 10:30. In combination with magnetic-field data, these measurements show the existence of electro-field components tangential to the actual magnetopause in the frame of rest of the magnetopause on every crossing of the current-carrying layers associated with the 11 magnetopause traversals. These tangential electric-field components were oriented with respect to the magnetopause sheet currents, such that there was an electrical power dissipation of between 30 and 110 W/sq km on 10 of the 11 crossings. These results are in agreement with requirements of reconnection theories. Histograms of the normal electric-field components and of the orientation, velocity, and thickness of the current-carrying layer are presented. The existence of a parallel electric field in the magnetosheath near the magnetopause and of propagation of large-amplitude waves along the magnetopause is suggested.

Magnetic fields in flowing magnetotail plasmas and their significance for magnetic reconnection

A statistical study is made of the magnetic field components that occur in the presence of high-velocity flows. Results are reported for a statistical analysis of 324 intervals of intense bulk plasma flows in the plasma sheet of the geomagnetic tail, measured by the Imp 6 spacecraft. A pronounced tendency for southward fields to be associated with tailward flow more often than with earthward flow yields support for the merging concept, though not in its simplest form. Histograms of 15.36-s averages of vector magnetic field measurements during plasma flows reveal no significant changes in the distribution of beta-y between earthward or tailward plasma flow directions.

Application of split-film anemometer and mini-computer for measurement in turbulent separated flow

A split-film anemometer has been adapted for measurement of highly turbulent intermittently reversing flows in regions of local separation around airfoils and flaps. Analog signals from the split-film anemometer are fed directly to a mini-computer for processing and analysis. Mean velocity magnitude and direction, intermittency of reversal, turbulence intensity and histograms of the velocity are obtained as outputs of the system.

A new color correlation method applied to XRF Al/Si ratios and other lunar remote sensing data

Orbital X-ray fluorescence Al/Si intensity ratios, corrected for variations in solar activity, are correlated with normal albedo, elevation measurements from laser altimetry data, and gamma ray data in the 2.75-8.60 MeV range. Each of these data sets is placed into a digital array consisting of 1/4 deg latitude by 1/4 deg longitude pixels. Information relative to the correlation of Al/Si ratios with each of the other data sets is presented in the following forms: (1) histograms are given for each data set to show the frequency distribution within the areas of common coverage; (2) density plots are produced from the plot of a two-dimensional array consisting of the Al/Si ratio vs the other parameter value for each pixel; and (3) color correlation maps are produced by placing the two-dimensional array into a 3 x 3 matrix consisting of nine equal subarrays containing an equal number of data points.

Decametric radio measurement of Jupiter's rotation period

Results of determinations of Jupiter's average decametric-wave rotation period are reported. The residual longitude drift of 18, 20 and 22.2 GHz emission observed at stations in Florida and Chile was calculated from measurements of the longitudes of source A peak centers for apparitions separated by 12 years; the drift was assumed to be the longitude shift which maximizes the cross correlation of histograms of occurence probability as a function of System III (1957.0) central meridian longitude. The weighted mean rotation period observed is 9 h 55 min 29.689 sec (standard deviation 0.005 sec), which is 0.022 sec less than the System III (1965) value. It is suggested that, if measurements are continued through the next maximum of Jovicentric earth declination, a secular drift in Jupiter's magnetic field may be observable.

The relationship of storm severity to directionally resolved radio emissions

Directionally resolved atmospheric radio frequency emission data were acquired from thunderstorms occurring in the central and southwestern United States. In addition, RF sferic tracking data were obtained from hurricanes and tropical depressions occurring in the Gulf of Mexico. The data were acquired using a crossed baseline phase interferometer operating at a frequency of 2.001 MHz. The received atmospherics were tested for phase linearity across the array, and azimuth/elevation angles of arrival were computed in real time. A histogram analysis of sferic burst count versus azimuth provided lines of bearing to centers of intense electrical activity. Analysis indicates a consistent capability of the phase linear direction finder to detect severe meteorological activity to distances of 2000 km from the receiving site. The technique evidences the ability to discriminate severe storms from nonsevere storms coexistent in large regional scale thunderstorm activity.

Quadratic image destriping

An algorithm for removing second-order detector banding effects (striping) from digital imagery is described. This quadratic destriping method is basically an extension of a linear method to one higher degree. It provides a nonlinear alternative between the two-parameter linear correction and a multilinear histogram equalization approach. The application of the proposed technique to GOES visible imagery is discussed, and its effectiveness is compared to existing methods.

Laser anemometer measurements at the exit of a T63 combustor

In the first practical application of laser anemometry to an actual gas turbine engine combustor, the mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles were measured in a steady-flow combustion rig across an annulus simulating a turbine inlet; to establish a basis for comparison with similar measurements to be made in an operating engine and to confirm current turbine aerodynamics and heat transfer design assumptions. It was necessary to develop a new experimental technique for traversing the annulus due to differential thermal expansion of the cantilevered combustion rig and a new computer-graphics analysis technique for analyzing the velocity histograms due to the high background light intensity. The axial mean velocity and turbulent intensity were uniform across the annulus under all operating conditions and the flow had little or no swirl component. The isothermal mean velocity was doubled by the burning of fuel, however, the isothermal turbulent intensity was relatively unaffected.

Vegetation clutter model

The statistical behavior of the radar backscattering coefficient of agricultural crops is examined. The data used were obtained by the microwave active spectrometer (MAS) systems in 1975 and 1976. Based on an evaluation of the angular and spectral variation of the mean, median, and 90-percent dynamic range of the coefficient (dB) histograms, empirical expressions describing the joint angular and frequency dependence of the mean and median were generated for each linear polarization configuration. The clutter model thus generated covers the angular range between 0 deg (nadir) and 80 deg and the frequency range between 1 GHz and 18 GHz. Decorrelation of the coefficient with frequency spacing was also evaluated and modeled.

Some useful concepts for the designer in treating cumulative fatigue damage at elevated temperatures

The paper concentrates on three subjects: (1) further development of the double-linear damage rule for cumulative fatigue damage summation in the sub-creep temperature range; (2) a new consideration of the effect of strain reversals in the creep range of materials, whereby reversals that occur later in the histogram can influence the degree of damage caused by earlier loading events; and (3) the application of the minimum-commitment time-temperature parameter to the treatment of creep rupture of multiheats wherein considerable differences in properties of individual heats may occur. Numerical examples and plots are given.

A comparative statistical study of long-term agroclimatic conditions affecting the growth of US winter wheat: Distributions of regional monthly average precipitation on the Great Plains and the state of Maryland and the effect of agroclimatic conditions on yield in the state of Kansas

A histogram analysis of average monthly precipitation over 30 and 84 year periods for both Maryland and Kansas was made and the results compared. A second analysis, a statistical assessment of the effect of average monthly precipitation on Kansas winter wheat yield was made. The data sets covered the three periods of 1941-1970, 1887-1970, and 1887-1921. Analyses of the limited data sets used (only the average monthly precipitation and temperature were correlated against yield) indicated that fall precipitation values, especially those of September and October, were more important to winter wheat yield than were spring values, particularly for the period 1941-1970.

Analysis of DSN software anomalies

A categorized data base of software errors which were discovered during the various stages of development and operational use of the Deep Space Network DSN/Mark 3 System was developed. A study team identified several existing error classification schemes (taxonomies), prepared a detailed annotated bibliography of the error taxonomy literature, and produced a new classification scheme which was tuned to the DSN anomaly reporting system and encapsulated the work of others. Based upon the DSN/RCI error taxonomy, error data on approximately 1000 reported DSN/Mark 3 anomalies were analyzed, interpreted and classified. Next, error data are summarized and histograms were produced highlighting key tendencies.
