Glass Design Using Machine Learning Property Models with Prediction Uncertainties: Nuclear Waste Glass Formulation

The United States Department of Energy is responsible for managing the legacy nuclear waste stored in underground tanks at the Hanford Site. The waste will be separately vitrified as low-activity waste and high-level waste fractions. Waste glass formulation algorithms have been traditionally developed using partial quadratic mixture property-composition models. Recently, machine learning (ML) techniques have been used to predict glass properties and discover new glass materials for nuclear waste vitrification, and these advancements can be utilized to improve waste glass composition design. In this proof-of-principle study, ML algorithms such as Gaussian process regression (GPR) were used to interpolate glass properties (e.g., viscosity, electrical conductivity, chemical durability). After selecting appropriate sets of GPR hyper-parameters for each property, an optimization program was developed to formulate glass compositions to maximize waste loading while simultaneously satisfying property within constraints. The results of the ML-based waste loadings and glass compositions were compared to those obtained using the traditional methods. Comparing to the previous glass design framework, the ML-based optimization methods offer improved glass designs and a streamlined approach to generation of optimally designed data and near real-time updates.

Uranium carbide properties for advanced fuel modeling – A review

Uranium carbides are receiving renewed interest as a preferred nuclear fuel composition for advanced reactors due to their numerous favorable properties. Like many other refractory and transition metal carbides these compounds exist in both hypo- and hyper-stoichiometric compositions which results in significant variations in physical, thermal, and mechanical properties. This manuscript surveys both historic and recent literature to compile important properties data mainly as a function of temperature and carbon content to support fuel performance modeling. Expressions and fits for such properties are also suggested when allowed by complete data sets. Finally, the manuscript also attempts to highlight gaps and discrepancies in the reported data to assist the nuclear fuels community identify key areas that may require further attention in terms of future research and development.

Proper orthogonal decomposition based reduced-order modeling of flux-Limited gray thermal radiation

Here, in this work, a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based reduced-order model (ROM) is developed to solve gray, flux-limited thermal radiation diffusion. We focus on the variable opacity radiation penetration benchmark posed by Olson, Auer, and Hall. The T -3 relationship for opacity in conjunction with high-temperature radiation penetrating an initially cold material produces a strong thermal radiation shock. This class of problems is particularly challenging for standard POD-based reduced-order modeling due to the nonlinearities presented by 1) the T 4 source term, and 2) flux-limited diffusion operator. To address these challenges and develop a cost competitive ROM, we employ a “hyper-reduction” technique through discrete empirical interpolation (DEIM) and allow for adaptive reduced-order projections through principal interval decomposition (PID). Performance of the proposed methodology is quantified by comparing the cost savings and accuracy relative to a full-order computation. Reference solutions and snapshot data are obtained through a full-order calculation performed by the University of Chicago maintained astrophysics code, FLASH. For consistency and potential extensibility, the developed ROM is also implemented in FLASH. We find that in the initialization regime, where the thermal radiation wave is initially created by the warming of the material, this class of problems is highly reducible and suitable for POD-based ROMs. However, the strong convective nature of the wave propagation regime is less reducible and more challenging to create an efficient ROM.

Transcriptional networks underlying a primary ovarian insufficiency disorder in alligators naturally exposed to EDCs

Interactions between the endocrine system and environmental contaminants are responsible for impairing reproductive development and function. Despite the taxonomic diversity of affected species and attendant complexity inherent to natural systems, the underlying signaling pathways and cellular consequences are mostly studied in lab models. To resolve the genetic and endocrine pathways that mediate affected ovarian function in organisms exposed to endocrine disrupting contaminants in their natural environments, we assessed broad-scale transcriptional and steroidogenic responses to exogenous gonadotropin stimulation in juvenile alligators (Alligator missippiensis) originating from a lake with well-documented pollution (Lake Apopka, FL) and a nearby reference site (Lake Woodruff, FL). Here, we found that individuals from Lake Apopka are characterized by hyperandrogenism and display hyper-sensitive transcriptional responses to gonadotropin stimulation when compared to individuals from Lake Woodruff. Site-specific transcriptomic divergence appears to be driven by wholly distinct subsets of transcriptional regulators, indicating alterations to fundamental genetic pathways governing ovarian function. Consistent with broad-scale transcriptional differences, ovaries of Lake Apopka alligators displayed impediments to folliculogenesis, with larger germinal beds and decreased numbers of late-stage follicles. After resolving the ovarian transcriptome into clusters of co-expressed genes, most site-associated modules were correlated to ovarian follicule phenotypes across individuals. However, expression of two site-specific clusters were independent of ovarian cellular architecture and are hypothesized to represent alterations to cell-autonomous transcriptional programs. Collectively, our findings provide high resolution mapping of transcriptional patterns to specific reproductive function and advance our mechanistic understanding regarding impaired reproductive health in an established model of environmental endocrine disruption.

Segmentation method comparison for residual fiber length measurement across tiled microscopy images

Fiber length distribution (FLD), in part, governs mechanical properties in discontinuous fiber composites, yet manual measurement methods limit the high-throughput characterization needed for materials design optimization. This study compares deep learning segmentation approaches for automated FLD measurement in large-field microscopy, evaluating how method choice affects the microstructural descriptors used in structure-property-processing relationships. A critical challenge is that high-resolution microscopy images (10,000×10,000 pixels) must be tiled for deep learning analysis, fragmenting fibers at boundaries. We demonstrate that segmentation method proves crucial for measurement accuracy. For example, instance segmentation with Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) preserves individual fiber integrity across tiles while semantic segmentation prioritizes speed. Comparing against manual measurement of extracted carbon fibers, YOLOv11-SAHI matched manual ground truth (238 μm weighted mean) with 40x speedup (4.5 vs 167 minutes per image). U-Net provides rapid quantification although it is at the cost of reduced accuracy due only reliably measuring stand-alone fibers. Our comparative analysis reveals that instance segmentation with SAHI better preserves length measurements while semantic segmentation prioritizes speed, providing empirical guidance for method selection. The characterization provides essential inputs for mechanical property prediction models and inverse design workflows, accelerating composite materials development cycles.

Effects of magnetic fields on HPGe tracking detectors

Here, we present a study of magnetic fields effects on the position resolution and energy response of hyper-pure germanium detectors. Our results provide realistic estimates of the potential impact on the resolving power of tracking-arrays from (fringe) magnetic fields present when operating together with large spectrometers. By solving the equations of motion for the electron and holes in the presence of both electric and magnetic fields, we analyzed the drift trajectories of the charge carriers to determine the deviations in the positions at the end point of the trajectories, as well as changes in drift lengths affecting the energy resolution and peak shift due to trapping. Our results show that the major effect is in the deviation of the transverse (to the electric field direction) position and suggest that, if no corrective action is taken in the pulse-shape and tracking data analysis procedures, a field strength ≳ 0.1 T will start to impact the intrinsic position resolution of 2 mm (RMS). At fields above ~1 T, the degradation of the energy response becomes observable.

A generalized machine learning workflow to visualize mechanical discontinuity

Accurate detection and mapping of mechanical discontinuity in materials has widespread industrial and research applications. Herein, we developed a generalized machine-learning framework for visualizing single mechanical discontinuity embedded in material of any composition, velocity, density, porosity, and size with limited data. The proposed visualization of discontinuity requires accurate estimations of the length, location, and orientation of the embedded discontinuity by processing multipoint wave-transmission measurements. k-Wave simulator is used to create a large dataset of elastic waveforms recorded during multi-point wave-transmission measurements through materials containing single mechanical discontinuity. k-Wave simulator considers the wave attenuation, dispersion, and mode conversion in wave motion. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and statistical feature extraction are essential for data preprocessing prior to the data-driven model development. DWT also minimizes the effect of noise. Using hyper-parameter tuning and cross validation, gradient boosting regression can visualize the mechanical discontinuity with an accuracy of 0.85, in terms of coefficient of determination. A double-layered neural network-based regression has better performance with an accuracy of 0.95. Use of convolutional neural network converts the predictive task from a waveform processing to an image processing problem. Convolutional neural network achieved a generalization performance of 0.91. The proposed generalized workflow requires robust simulation of wave propagation, signal processing, feature engineering, and model evaluation. Sensors closest to the source and those located opposite the source are the most significant for the desired visualization. Notably, the sensors closest to the source capture the non-linear associations, whereas the sensor on the border opposite to the source capture the linear associations between the measured waveforms and the properties of the mechanical discontinuity.

Accelerated alloy discovery using synthetic data generation and data mining

The search for new alloys with improved properties is never ending with infinite combinations and amounts of alloying elements in the alloy. Advancements in machine learning have made navigating this enormous search space feasible. However, training the machine learning models and tuning their hyper-parameters to make accurate predictions can be time-consuming and often require high-performance computing resources. Furthermore, the quality of the predictions depend on the availability of sufficient training data. Here, we present a generic approach to accelerate alloy discovery by coupling high throughput CALPHAD calculations, synthetic data generation, and data mining. Finally, as a demonstration of the approach, we design super bainitic steels that form bainite at 200 C in lower transformation times.

Data-Efficient Strategies for Probabilistic Voltage Envelopes under Network Contingencies

This work presents an efficient data-driven method to construct probabilistic voltage envelopes (PVE) using power flow learning in grids with network contingencies. First, a network-aware Gaussian process (GP) termed Vertex-Degree Kernel (VDK-GP), developed in prior work, is used to estimate voltage–power functions for a few network configurations. The paper introduces a novel multi-task vertex degree kernel (MT-VDK) that amalgamates the learned VDK-GPs to determine power flows for unseen networks, with a significant reduction in the computational complexity and hyperparameter requirements compared to alternate approaches. Simulations on the IEEE 30-Bus network demonstrate the retention and transfer of power flow knowledge in both N-1 and N-2 contingency scenarios. The MT-VDK-GP approach achieves over 50 % reduction in mean prediction error for novel N-1 contingency network configurations in low training data regimes (50–250 samples) over VDK-GP. Additionally, MT-VDK-GP outperforms a hyper-parameter based transfer learning approach in over 75 % of N-2 contingency network structures, even without historical N-2 outage data. Furthermore, the proposed method demonstrates the ability to achieve PVEs using sixteen times fewer power flow solutions compared to Monte-Carlo sampling-based methods.

Polyproline peptide targets Klebsiella pneumoniae polysaccharides to collapse biofilms

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is known for its increased extracellular polysaccharide production. Biofilm matrices of hyper- virulent K. pneumoniae have increased polysaccharide abundance and are uniquely susceptible to disruption by peptide bactenecin 7 (bac7 (1–35)). Here, using confocal microscopy, we show that poly- saccharides within the biofilm matrix collapse following bac7 (1–35) treatment. This collapse led to the release of cells from the biofilm, which were then killed by the peptide. Characterization of truncated peptide analogs revealed that their interactions with polysaccharide were responsible for the biofilm matrix changes that accompany bac7 (1–35) treatment. Ultraviolet photodissociation mass spec- trometry with the parental peptide or a truncated analog bac7 (10–35) reveal the important regions for bac7 (1–35) complexing with polysaccharides. Finally, we tested bac7 (1–35) using a murine skin abscess model and observed a significant decrease in the bacte- rial burden. These findings unveil the potential of bac7 (1–35) poly- saccharide interactions to collapse K. pneumoniae biofilms.

The JmjC-domain protein NO66/RIOX-1 affects the balance between proliferation and maturation in acute myeloid leukemia

Highlights: • NO66/RIOX1 is not expressed in the AML cell line KG1a regarded as a “stem cell-like” model system. • NO66/RIOX1 is not expressed in primary HSC-enriched CD34{sup +}/CD38{sup -} cells of healthy donors. • Ectopic expression of NO66/RIOX1 in KG1a cells inhibits proliferation and rDNA transcription. • NO66/RIOX1 impacts on the transition from stem cells to progenitors by regulation of gene expression. As epigenetic regulators are frequently dysregulated in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) we determined expression levels of the JmjC-protein NO66 in AML cell lines and sub fractions of healthy human hematopoietic cells. NO66 is absent in the AML cell lines KG1/KG1a which consist of cells with the immature CD34{sup +}/CD38{sup -} phenotype and is regarded as a “stem cell-like” model system. Similarly, NO66 is not detectable in CD34{sup +}/CD38{sup -} cells purified from healthy donors but is clearly expressed in the more committed CD34{sup +}/CD38{sup +} cell population. Loss of NO66 expression in KG1/KG1a cells is due to hyper-methylation of its promoter and is released by DNA-methyltransferase inhibitors. In KG1a cells stably expressing exogenous wild type (KG1a66wt) or enzymatically inactive mutant (KG1a66mut) NO66, respectively, the wild type protein inhibited proliferation and rDNA transcription. Gene expression profiling revealed that the expression of NO66 induces a transcriptional program enriched for genes with roles in proliferation and maturation (e.g.EPDR1, FCER1A, CD247, MYCN, SNORD13). Genes important for the maintenance of stem cell properties are downregulated (e.g. SIRPA, Lin28B, JAML). Our results indicate that NO66 induces lineage commitment towards myeloid progenitor cell fate and suggest that NO66 contributes to loss of stem cell properties.

Exploiting Colorimetry for Fidelity in Data Visualization

Advances in multimodal characterization methods fuel the generation of increasing immense hyper-dimensional data sets. Color mapping is employed for conveying higher dimensional data in two-dimensional (2D) representations for human consumption without relying on multiple projections. How one constructs these color maps, however, critically affects how accurately one perceives data. For simple scalar fields, perceptually uniform color maps and color selection have been shown to improve data readability and interpretation across research fields. In this work, we review core concepts underlying the design of perceptually uniform color maps and extend the concepts from scalar fields to two-dimensional vector fields and three-component composition fields frequently found in materials-chemistry research to enable high-fidelity visualization. Additionally, we develop the software tools PAPUC and CMPUC to enable researchers to utilize these colorimetry principles and employ perceptually uniform color spaces for rigorously meaningful color mapping of higher dimensional data representations. Last, we demonstrate how these approaches deliver immediate improvements in data readability and interpretation in microscopies and spectroscopies routinely used in discerning materials structure, chemistry, and properties.

A Novel Multiagent Resource Sharing Algorithm for Control of Advanced Energy Systems

This paper implements a novel resource sharing control strategy on a fuel cell–gas turbine hybrid power system at the National Energy Technology Laboratory’s Hybrid Performance Facility (Hyper). In a fuel cell–gas turbine hybrid power system, the simultaneous interaction of the gas turbine and the fuel cell creates a tightly coupled environment characterized by conflicting dynamics. In this paper, a model-free control approach is applied to solve the tightly coupled control problem posed by this challenging environment. Specifically, this control problem is presented as a resource sharing problem that can be solved using a resource sharing algorithm that is defined based on the distribution construction concept. This algorithm creates computational agents and solves the problem through the distribution and redistribution of shared resources defined as blocks. Furthermore, two agents were created; the first agent (agent 1) controls the gas turbine speed by adjusting the electric load, and the second agent (agent 2) controls the cathode mass flow through the fuel cell using the cold-air bypass valve. A parametric study was performed over the course of 15 experimental tests for both agents 1 and 2 through an evaluation of the responses based on setpoint changes. The algorithm was shown to have behavior comparable to a previously implemented multi-input multioutput state-space controller, which was designed through a model-based control approach. The resource sharing algorithm was able to find stable performance during run-time operations without any prior system knowledge identification on the power plant and without creating models used in traditional control strategies.

Excited-State Dynamics and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Hyperpolarizable Chromophores Based on Conjugated Bis(terpyridyl)Ru(II) and Palladium and Platinum Porphyrinic Components: Impact of Heavy Metals upon Supermolecular Electro-Optic Properties

A new series of strongly coupled oscillators based upon (porphinato)Pd, (porphinato)Pt, and bis(terpyridyl)-ruthenium(II) building blocks is described. These RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu chromophores feature bis- (terpyridyl)Ru(II) moieties connected to the (porphinato)metal unit via an ethyne linker that bridges the 4!-terpyridyl and porphyrin macrocycle meso-carbon positions. Pump–probe transient optical data demonstrate sub-picosecond excited singlet-to-triplet-state relaxation. The relaxed lowest-energy triplet (T 1 ) excited states of these chromophores feature absorption manifolds that span the 800–1200 nm spectral region, microsecond triplet-state lifetimes, and large absorptive extinction coefficients [ε(T 1 → T n ) > 4 × 10 4 M –1 cm –1 ]. Dynamic hyperpolarizability (β λ ) values were determined from hyper-Rayleigh light scattering (HRS) measurements carried out at several incident irradiation wavelengths over the 800–1500 nm spectral region. Relative to benchmark RuPZn and RuPZnRu chromophores which showed large βHRS values over the 1200–1600 nm range, RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu displayed large βHRS values over the 850–1200 nm region. Generalized Thomas–Kuhn sum (TKS) rules and experimental hyperpolarizability values were utilized to determine excited state-to-excited state transition dipole terms from experimental electronic absorption data and thus assessed frequency-dependent β λ values, including two- and three-level contributions for both β zzz and β xzx tensor components to the RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu hyperpolarizability spectra. Furthermore, these analyses qualitatively rationalize how the βzzz and βxzx tensor elements influence the observed irradiation wavelength-dependent hyperpolarizability magnitudes. The TKS analysis suggests that supermolecules related to RuPPd, RuPPt, RuPPdRu, and RuPPtRu will likely feature intricate dependences of experimentally determined βHRS values as a function of irradiation wavelength that derive from substantial singlet–triplet mixing, and complex interactions among multiple different β tensor components that modulate the long wavelength regime of the nonlinear optical response.

Robust Tensor Hypercontraction of the Particle–Particle Ladder Term in Equation-of-Motion Coupled Cluster Theory

One method of representing a high-rank tensor as a (hyper-)product of lower-rank tensors is the tensor hypercontraction (THC) method of Hohenstein et al. This strategy has been found to be useful for reducing the polynomial scaling of coupled-cluster methods by representation of a four-dimensional tensor of electron-repulsion integrals in terms of five two-dimensional matrices. Pierce et al. have already shown that the application of a robust form of THC to the particle–particle ladder (PPL) term reduces the cost of this term in couple-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) from O(N 6 ) to O(N 5 ) with negligible errors in energy with respect to the density-fitted variant. In this work, we have implemented the least-squares variant of THC (LS-THC) which does not require a nonlinear tensor factorization, including the robust form (R-LS-THC), for the calculation of the excitation and electron attachment energies using equation-of-motion coupled cluster methods EOMEE-CCSD and EOMEA-CCSD, respectively. We have benchmarked the effect of the R-LS-THC-PPL approximation on excitation energies using the comprehensive QUEST database and the accuracy of electron attachment energies using the NAB22 database. Here, we find that errors on the order of 1 meV are achievable with a reduction in total calculation time of approximately 5x.

Molecular Simulations of CH 4 and CO 2 Diffusion in Rigid Nanoporous Amorphous Materials

Molecular diffusion in nanoporous materials is important in determining the rate of equilibration of various adsorption processes and plays a pivotal role in kinetic separations and membrane-based separations. Because generating realistic structures of amorphous nanoporous materials is difficult, far less is known about diffusion in amorphous nanoporous materials than in their crystalline counterparts. Here, we present molecular dynamics simulations assessing the room-temperature self-diffusion of CH 4 and CO 2 in a wide range of rigid amorphous nanoporous materials, including porous carbons, kerogens, polymers of intrinsic microporosity, and hyper-cross-linked polymers. Our results are the largest collection of molecular diffusivities in amorphous nanoporous materials to date. In each material, the diffusivity increases with the adsorbate concentration at low and moderate adsorbate concentrations, reaching a maximum before decreasing due to steric effects at higher concentrations. The observed diffusivities are much slower than that would be expected based on standard descriptions of Knudsen diffusivity. Here we show that the observed diffusivities are not correlated in a simple way with scalar descriptors of the pore structures such as the pore limiting diameter.

Bioprocessing, Recovery, and Mass Balance of Vegetative Lipids from Metabolically Engineered “Oilcane” Demonstrates Its Potential as an Alternative Feedstock for Drop-In Fuel Production

Plant oils are increasingly in demand as renewable feedstocks for biodiesel and biochemicals. Currently, oilseeds are the primary source of plant oils. Although the vegetative tissues of plants express lipid metabolism pathways, they do not hyper- accumulate lipids. Elevated synthesis, storage, and accumulation of lipids in vegetative tissues have been achieved by metabolic engineering of sugarcane to produce “oilcane”. This study evaluates the potential of oilcane as a renewable feedstock for the co- production of lipids and fermentable sugars. Oilcane was grown under favorable climatic and field conditions in Florida (FLOC) as well as during an abbreviated growing season, outside its typical growing region, in Illinois (ILOC). The potential lipid yield of 0.35 tons/ha was projected from the hyperaccumulation of fatty acids in the stored vegetative biomass of FLOC, which is approaching the lipid yield of soybean (0.44 tons/ha). Processing of the vegetative tissues of oilcane recovered 0.20 tons/ha, which represents the recovery of 55% of the total lipids from FLOC. Chemical-free hydrothermal bioprocessing of ILOC and FLOC bagasse and leaves at 180 °C for 10 min prevented the degeneration of in situ plant lipids. Here, this allowed the recovery of lipids at the end of the bioprocess with a major fraction of lipids remaining in the biomass residues after pretreatment and saccharification. Improvements through refined biomass processing, crop management, and metabolic engineering are expected to boost lipid yields and make oilcane a prime feedstock for the production of biodiesel.

Global River Topology (GRIT): A Bifurcating River Hydrography

Existing global river networks underpin a wide range of hydrological applications but do not represent channels with divergent river flows (bifurcations, multi‐threaded channels, canals), as these features defy the convergent flow assumption that elevation‐derived networks (e.g., HydroSHEDS, MERIT Hydro) are based on. Yet, bifurcations are important features of the global river drainage system, especially on large floodplains and river deltas, and are also often found in densely populated regions. Here we developed the first raster and vector‐based Global RIver Topology that not only represents the tributaries of the global drainage network but also the distributaries, including multi‐threaded rivers, canals and deltas. We achieve this by merging a 30 m Landsat‐based river mask with elevation‐generated streams to ensure a homogeneous drainage density outside of the river mask for rivers narrower than approximately 30 m. Crucially, we employ the new 30 m digital terrain model, FABDEM, based on TanDEM‐X, which shows greater accuracy over the traditionally used SRTM derivatives. After vectorization and pruning, directionality is assigned by a series of elevation, flow angle and continuity approaches. The new global network and its attributes are validated using gauging stations, comparison with existing networks, and randomized manual checks. The new network represents 19.6 million km of streams and rivers with drainage areas greater than 50 km 2 and includes 67,495 bifurcations. With the advent of hyper‐resolution modeling and artificial intelligence, GRIT is expected to greatly improve the accuracy of many river‐based applications such as flood forecasting, water availability and quality simulations, or riverine habitat mapping.
