The Brilliant Eyes Ten-Kelvin Sorption Cryocooler Experiment (BETSCE) is a Space Shuttle side-wall-mounted flight experiment designed to demonstrate 10 K sorption cryocooler technology in a space environment. The BETSCE objectives are to: (1) provide a thorough end-to-end characterization and space performance validation of a complete, multistage, automated, closed-cycle hydride sorption cryocooler in the 10 to 30 K temperature range, (2) acquire the quantitative microgravity database required to provide confident engineering design, scaling, and optimization, (3) advance the enabling technologies and resolve integration issues, and (4) provide hardware qualification and safety verification heritage. BETSCE ground tests were the first-ever demonstration of a complete closed-cycle 10 K sorption cryocooler. Test results exceeded functional requirements. This paper summarizes functional and environmental ground test results, planned characterization tests, important development challenges that were overcome, and valuable lessons-learned.
A commercial Zr-V-Fe alloy (i.e., SAES Getters trade name alloy St-172) has been assessed as reversible hydrogen storage material for use in actuators of gas gap heat switches. Two prototype actuators containing the SAES St-172 material were built and operated for several thousand cycles to evaluate performance of the metal hydride system under conditions simulating heat switch operation.
Hydrogen isotherms have been measured for activated LaNi(sub 4.6)M(sub 0.4) alloys from 300 K to 473 K or 493 K, where M= Si, Ge, Sn. Thermodynamic parameters have been obtained from the isotherms using van't Hoff plots for hydride decomposition.
Partial substitution of tin for nickel in the LaNi(sub 5) alloy greatly enhances the stability and durability of the hydride phase during both gas phase and electrochemical cycling. Effects observed included reduction in hydrogen storage capacity, decreases in the plateau pressures, increased slopes of the plateaus, and smaller hysteresis ratios.
We are developing metal-hydride based sorption cryocoolers for the Planck Surveyor mission.
X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were performed on hydride phases formed by vanadium and its carbon substituted alloys. It was previously found that thermal cycling of VHx across the B-y mixed phase region changed the reversible hydrogen storage capacity and other properties.
Since 1989 NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) has performed some small-scale limited experiments that show evidence of effects claimed by some to be evidence of Low Energy Nuclear Reactions (LENR). The research at GRC has involved observations and work on measurement techniques for observing the temperature effects in reactions of isotopes of hydrogen with palladium hydrides. The various experiments performed involved loading Pd with gaseous H2 and D2, and exposing Pd thin films to multi-bubble sonoluminescence in regular and deuterated water. An overview of these experiments and their results will be presented.
Continuous-duty hydrogen sorption cryocoolers are being developed for the European Space Agency (ESA) Planck mission. To achieve an acceptable level of performance and robust operation with these hydride refrigerators during flight, detailed investigations have been performed on the sorbent materials and on critical hardware components.

Several rules to guide choice of materials, and methods of welding, electroplating, and heat treatment will provide a method for minimizing failures in storage tanks and related hardware. Failures are caused by high-pressure hydrogen effects, the formation of hydrides in titanium, and hydrogen absorption through various metals processing techniques.
