Schwinger-Keldysh effective action for hydrodynamics with approximate symmetries

We study hydrodynamic theories with approximate symmetries in the recently developed effective action approach on the Schwinger-Keldysh contour. We employ the method of spurious symmetry transformation for small explicit symmetry-breaking parameters to systematically constrain symmetry-breaking effects in the nonequilibrium effective action for hydrodynamics. We apply our method to the hydrodynamic theory of chiral symmetry in quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature and density and its explicit breaking by quark masses. We show that the spurious symmetry and the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation dictate that the Ward-Takahashi identity for the axial symmetry, i.e., the partial conservation of axial vector current (PCAC) relation, contains a relaxational term proportional to the axial chemical potential, whose kinetic coefficient is at least of the second order in the quark mass. In the phase where the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, and the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone pions appear as hydrodynamic variables, this relaxation effect is subleading compared to the conventional pion mass term in the PCAC relation, which is of the first order in the quark mass. On the other hand, in the chiral symmetry restored phase, we show that our relaxation term, which is of the second order in the quark mass, becomes the leading contribution to the axial charge relaxation. Therefore, the leading axial charge relaxation mechanism is parametrically different in the quark mass across a chiral phase transition.

Measurement of muon neutrino induced charged current interactions without charged pions in the final state using a new T2K off-axis near detector WAGASCI-BabyMIND

We report a flux-integrated cross section measurement of muon neutrino interactions on water and hydrocarbon via charged current reactions without charged pions in the final state with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector, which was installed in the T2K near detector hall in 2018. The detector is located 1.5° off-axis and is exposed to a more energetic neutrino flux than ND280, another T2K near detector, which is located at a different off-axis position. The total flux-integrated cross section is measured to be 1.26 ± 0.18⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on CH and 1.44 ± 0.21⁢(stat+syst) × 10 −39 cm 2 /nucleon on H 2 ⁡O. These results are compared to model predictions provided by the neut v5.3.2 and genie v2.8.0 Monte Carlo generators and the measurements are compatible with these models. Differential cross sections in muon momentum and cosine of the muon scattering angle are also reported. This is the first such measurement reported with the WAGASCI-BabyMIND detector and utilizes the 2020 and 2021 datasets.

Universality of Rényi Entropy in Conformal Field Theory

We use the thermal effective theory to prove that, for the vacuum state in any conformal field theory in 𝑑 dimensions, the 𝑛th Rényi entropy 𝑆$^{(𝑛)}_{𝐴}$ behaves as 𝑆$^{(𝑛)}_{𝐴}$ = [𝑓⁡/(2⁢𝜋⁢𝑛) 𝑑−1 ]⁢[Area⁡(∂𝐴)/(𝑑−2)⁢𝜀 𝑑−2 ]⁢(1+𝑂⁡(𝑛)) in the 𝑛 → 0 limit when the boundary of the entanglement domain 𝐴 is spherical with the UV cutoff 𝜀. The theory dependence is encapsulated in the cosmological constant 𝑓 in the thermal effective action. Using this result, we estimate the density of states for large eigenvalues of the modular Hamiltonian for the domain 𝐴. In two dimensions, we can use the hot spot idea, which describes the effective action in the high-temperature limit when the temperature is position-dependent, to derive more powerful formulas valid for arbitrary positive 𝑛. We discuss the difference between two and higher dimensions and clarify the applicability of the hot spot idea. We also use the thermal effective theory to derive an analog of the Cardy formula for boundary operators in higher dimensions.

Results from the T2K Experiment on Neutrino Mixing Including a New Far Detector 𝜇-like Sample

We have made improved measurements of three-flavor neutrino mixing with 19.7⁢(16.3) × 10 20 protons on target in (anti-)neutrino-enhanced beam modes. A new sample of muon-neutrino events with tagged pions has been added at the far detector, as well as new proton and photon-tagged samples at the near detector. Significant improvements have been made to the flux and neutrino interaction modeling. T2K data continue to prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin 2 ⁡𝜃 23 with a near-maximal value of the charge-parity violating phase with best-fit values in the normal ordering of 𝛿 CP = −2.18$^{+1.22}_{−0.47}$, sin 2 ⁡𝜃 23 = 0.559$^{+0.018}_{−0.078}$ and Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{32}$ = (+2.506$^{+0.039}_{−0.052}$) × 10 −3 eV 2 .

Classical optimization with imaginary-time block encoding on quantum computers: The MaxCut problem

Optimization problems in finance, physics, and computer science are typically very hard to tackle in classical computing; quantum computing could help speed up computations and provide efficient methods for tackling large problems. Typically, to treat a problem with a quantum computer, the optimal solution is cast as the ground state of a diagonal Hamiltonian. Here, we develop a method, called imaginary-time evolution block encoding (ITE-BE), based on a recent imaginary-time algorithm, which requires no variational parameter optimization, as all parameters can be derived analytically from the target Hamiltonian. We also demonstrate that our method can be successfully combined with other quantum algorithms such as the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). For illustration, here we study the MaxCut problem. We find that the QAOA ansatz increases the postselection success of ITE-BE, and shallow QAOA circuits, when boosted with ITE-BE, achieve better performance than deeper QAOA circuits. For the special case of the transverse initial state, we adapt our block-encoding scheme to allow for a deterministic application of the first layer of the circuit.

First Measurement of the Electron-Neutrino Charged-Current Pion Production Cross Section on Carbon with the T2K Near Detector

The T2K Collaboration presents the first measurement of electron neutrino-induced charged-current pion production on a predominantly carbon target in a restricted kinematical phase space. This is performed using data from the 2.5° off-axis near detector, ND280. The differential cross sections with respect to the outgoing electron and pion kinematics, in addition to the total flux-integrated cross section, are obtained. Comparisons between the measured and predicted cross-section results using the neut, genie, and nuwro Monte Carlo event generators are presented. The measured total flux-integrated cross section is [2.52 ± 0.52⁢(stat) ± 0.30⁢(syst)] × 10 −39 cm 2 nucleon −1 , which is lower than the event generator predictions.

Search for proton decay via 𝑝 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝜂 and 𝑝 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜂 with a 0.37 Mton-year exposure of Super-Kamiokande

A search for proton decay into 𝑒 + /𝜇 + and a 𝜂 meson has been performed using data from a 0.373 Mton·year exposure (6050.3 live days) of Super-Kamiokande. Compared to previous searches this work introduces an improved model of the intranuclear 𝜂 interaction cross section, resulting in a factor of 2 reduction in uncertainties from this source and ∼10% increase in signal efficiency. No significant data excess was found above the expected number of atmospheric neutrino background events resulting in no indication of proton decay into either mode. Lower limits on the proton partial lifetime of 1.4 × 10 34 years for 𝑝 → 𝑒 + ⁢𝜂 and 7.3 × 10 33 years for 𝑝 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜂 at the 90% CL were set. These limits are around 1.5 times longer than our previous study and are the most stringent to date.

First Joint Oscillation Analysis of Super-Kamiokande Atmospheric and T2K Accelerator Neutrino Data

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K Collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of 19.7⁢(16.3) × 10 20 protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9⁢𝜎 exclusion of 𝐶⁢𝑃 conservation (defined as 𝐽 𝐶⁢𝑃 = 0) and a 1.2⁢𝜎 exclusion of the inverted mass ordering.

First measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions using an accelerator neutrino beam

We report the first measurement of neutron capture multiplicity in neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielasticlike interactions at the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande detector using the T2K neutrino beam, which has a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV. A total of 30 neutral-current quasielasticlike event candidates were selected from T2K data corresponding to an exposure of 1.76 × 10 20 protons on target. The 𝛾 ray signals resulting from neutron captures were identified using a neural network. The flux-averaged mean neutron capture multiplicity was measured to be 1.37 ± 0.33 (stat.)$^{+0.17}_{−0.27}$ (syst.), which is compatible within 2.3 sigma than predictions obtained using our nominal simulation. We discuss potential sources of systematic uncertainty in the prediction and demonstrate that a significant portion of this discrepancy arises from the modeling of hadron-nucleus interactions in the detector medium.

Search for neutron decay into an antineutrino and a neutral kaon in 0.401 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for bound neutron decay via 𝑛 → $\bar{𝜈}$ +𝐾 0 predicted by the grand unified theories in 0.401 Mton·years exposure of all pure water phases in the Super-Kamiokande detector. About 4.4 times more data than in the previous search have been analyzed by a new method including a spectrum fit to kaon invariant mass distributions. No significant data excess has been observed in the signal regions. As a result of this analysis, we set a lower limit of 7.8 × 10 32 years on the neutron lifetime at a 90% confidence level.

Cooperative spin coupling in PrFeO3

A transition from crystal-field to spin wave excitations has been experimentally observed in PrFeO3 using inelastic neutron scattering. Theoretical modeling with density functional theory and the mean field random phase approximation successfully reproduces the experimental observations and allows extraction of the values for the various exchange interactions. The study reveals that the strong coupling between the two magnetic sublattices of Pr and Fe is the fundamental mechanism underlying the low-temperature Pr magnetism. This coupling, analogous to the Dicke cooperative interaction between atoms and photons, polarizes the Pr moments, enhances the Pr-Pr interactions, and contributes to the formation of a quasidoublet, leading to the transition from single-particle to collective excitations within the Pr sublattice. Furthermore, this coupling induces spin reorientation on the Fe sublattice. The manipulation of magnetic moments via spin waves is achievable through the coupling between different magnetic sublattices in a bulk material containing multiple magnetic ions.

Signal selection and model-independent extraction of the neutrino neutral-current single 𝜋 + cross section with the T2K experiment

This article presents a study of single 𝜋 + production in neutrino neutral-current interactions (NC⁢1⁢𝜋 + ) using the FGD1 hydrocarbon target of the ND280 detector of the T2K experiment. We report the largest sample of such events selected by any experiment, providing the first new data for this channel in over four decades and the first using a sub-GeV neutrino flux. The signal selection strategy and its performance are detailed together with validations of a robust cross section extraction methodology. The measured flux-averaged integrated cross-section is 𝜎 = (6.07 ± 1.22) × 10 −41 cm 2 /nucleon, 1.3⁢𝜎 above the NEUT v5.4.0 expectation.

Shear and bulk viscosity for a pure glue theory using an effective matrix model

At nonzero temperatures, the deconfining phase transition can be analyzed using an effective matrix model to characterize the change in holonomy. The model includes gluons and two-dimensional ghost fields in the adjoint representation, or “teens.” As ghosts, the teen fields are responsible for the decrease of the pressure as 𝑇 →𝑇 𝑑 , with 𝑇 𝑑 the transition temperature for deconfinement. Using the solution of this matrix model for a large number of colors, the parameters of the teen fields are adjusted so that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop is close to the values from the lattice. The shear, 𝜂, and bulk, 𝜁, viscosities are computed at nonzero holonomy to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling. In the pure glue theory, the value of the Polyakov loop is relatively large in the deconfined phase, ≈1/2 at 𝑇 𝑑 . Consequently, if 𝑠 is the entropy density, while 𝜂/𝑠 decreases as 𝑇 →𝑇 𝑑 , it is still well above the conformal bound. In contrast, 𝜁/𝑠 is largest at 𝑇 𝑑 , comparable to 𝜂/𝑠, then falls off rapidly with increasing temperature and is negligible by ∼2⁢𝑇 𝑑 .

A distinct subpopulation of membrane vesicles in Pseudomonas putida is enriched in enzymes for lignin catabolism

Bacterial membrane vesicles (MVs) mediate diverse microbial processes and are emerging as powerful biomedical tools, but MV population heterogeneity remains an open question. Here, we separate, enumerate, and characterize two MV populations from the soil bacterium Pseudomonas putida during growth with or without lignin-derived carbon, a major carbon source from plant cells in the rhizosphere. Small MVs (MV-S, diameter ~100 nm) were produced from all cultures, whereas large MVs (MV-L, diameter ~300 nm) were observed during the late stationary phase of lignin cultivations. MV-S contained selectively packaged proteins with diverse physiological functions, whereas the MV-L proteome was smaller and largely enriched in outer membrane proteins. Interestingly, enzymes known to mediate the catabolism of lignin-derived aromatic compounds were enriched in MV-S. Overall, this study highlights the need for careful consideration of MV populations in microbial systems.

Testing T2K’s Bayesian constraints with priors in alternate parameterisations

Bayesian analysis results require a choice of prior distribution. In long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, the usual parameterisation of the mixing matrix induces a prior that privileges certain neutrino mass and flavour state symmetries. Here we study the effect of privileging alternate symmetries on the results of the T2K experiment. We find that constraints on the level of CP violation (as given by the Jarlskog invariant) are robust under the choices of prior considered in the analysis. On the other hand, the degree of octant preference for the atmospheric angle depends on which symmetry has been privileged.
