Iron dopant energy levels in β-Ga 2 O 3

The energetic positions of the two Fe dopant levels in the bandgap of β-Ga 2 O 3 are determined to be at 3.05(±0.05) and 3.85(±0.05) eV below the conduction band minimum from transmission measurements employing a sub-picosecond tunable ultraviolet laser radiation source. A further measurement of the quantum efficiency of photoelectron emission from the Fe:Ga 2 O 3 (010) photocathode is consistent with the obtained absorption data and a dominant optical phonon assisted Franck–Condon emission mechanism, while also providing an estimate of 100 ps for the conduction band electron lifetime.

Solid-phase heteroepitaxy of oriented Sb 2 Se 3 on GaAs for birefringent thin films

Here, we investigate the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation of antimony selenide (Sb 2 Se 3 ) on UHV-prepared GaAs (001) substrates. In the bulk orthorhombic form, Sb 2 Se 3 is a layered quasi-1D semiconductor with highly anisotropic properties of interest for optical and electronic devices. We find that an amorphous layer deposited by molecular beam epitaxy annealed at or above 230 °C yields a textured-epitaxial structure among some randomly oriented domains. The textured-epitaxial Sb 2 Se 3 grains are oriented with the covalently bonded “1D axis” constrained in-plane to GaAs [110] and with multiple van der Waals (hk0) orientations out-of-plane. The same texture was achieved exclusively without randomly oriented grains using continuous-wave laser radiation, highlighting the use of thermal and optical methods to yield anisotropic crystalline Sb 2 Se 3 films directly from the amorphous phase. Polarized reflectance and polarized microscopy confirm the unique state of in-plane birefringence in the crystallized thin film. Overall, we show that solid-phase heteroepitaxy provides additional pathways to the integration of low-symmetry chalcogenide semiconductors for demanding applications where the inherent anisotropy needs to be preserved.

Automation of Nanoparticle Synthesis Processes in a Plasma Environment Using LabVIEW

This work presents an automated control system for the synthesis of nanomaterials by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), implemented using the LabVIEW software environment. The main objective of the study is to develop an integrated hardware-software platform that enables sequential control of the key stages of the PECVD process, including vacuum chamber preparation, pressure monitoring, working gas supply, plasma ignition, power matching, cyclic nanomaterial growth, and optical monitoring of nanoparticles in the plasma environment. The use of LabVIEW made it possible to integrate actuator control, experimental parameter acquisition, and realtime process visualization within a single automated system. The automated cycle begins with evacuation of the reaction chamber to a predefined base pressure. Transition to the next stage is permitted only after the specified pressure threshold has been reached, ensuring reproducible initial conditions for each experiment. The program then controls the supply of the working gas through mass flow controllers (MFCs). In this work, two gas-flow control modes were considered: analog control using a 0-5 V voltage signal and digital communication via RS-232 interface. It was shown that the analog approach requires accurate scaling of the control voltage, since applying 5 V corresponds to full-scale opening of the controller and results in the maximum gas flow. In contrast, the RS232 interface enables the gas flow rate to be specified directly in sccm, improving the accuracy, flexibility, and convenience of gas-environment control. After pressure stabilization, LabVIEW initiates RF plasma ignition and executes the RF matching algorithm aimed at minimizing reflected power and improving the stability of the plasma process. A separate software module implements the cyclic nanomaterial growth mode, in which the plasma-on time, plasma duration, and total number of synthesis cycles are predefined. This approach makes it possible to control material accumulation on the substrate and to correlate the process parameters with the morphological characteristics of the resulting nanostructures. The final module of the system is designed for optical monitoring of the nanoparticle cloud density in dusty plasma. For this purpose, the change in the intensity of laser radiation passing through the plasma region is recorded using a photodetector and a Keithley 2401 measuring unit connected to LabVIEW via RS-232 interface. The difference between the initial and modified optical signal intensity is used as a diagnostic parameter characterizing the formation and temporal evolution of nanoparticles. The developed system demonstrates that LabVIEW can be effectively applied not only for the automation of individual instruments, but also for the implementation of a complete digital control cycle for PECVD-based nanomaterial synthesis.

Basic characteristics of high-frequency Stark-effect modulation of CO2 lasers.

The molecular Stark effect and its application to the modulation of infrared laser radiation have been investigated both theoretically and experimentally. Using a density matrix approach, a quantum mechanical description of the effect of a time-varying electric field on the absorption coefficient and refractive index of a molecular gas near an absorption line has been formulated. For modulation applications a quantity known as the ?modulation depth' is of prime importance. Theoretical expressions for the frequency dependence of the modulation depth show that the response to the frequency of a time-varying Stark field is separated into a nondispersive and a dispersive region, depending on whether the modulating frequency is less than or greater than the homogeneous absorption linewidth. Experimental results showing nondispersive modulation at frequencies to 30 MHz are presented. In addition it is shown that the response of modulation depth to Stark field amplitude is separated into linear and nonlinear regions, the field at which nonlinearities begin being determined by the absorption spectrum of the molecule being used.

The SAO lunar laser.

The SAO lunar-ranging system is currently being installed at the Agassiz Observatory, Harvard, Massachusetts, USA. It employs a high-radiance neodymium-glass laser and a transmitting telescope whose aperture diameter is only 0.2 m. This telescope is a coude refractor specially built for the purpose, with tracking accuracy 1 second of arc. The receiving instrument is the 1.5-m telescope at the Agassiz Observatory. However, the laser transmitting unit can be moved to other locations where telescopes of similar size are available. Since the large telescope does not transmit the laser radiation, it remains in a normal mode of operation and the regular observing schedule is not disrupted. During routine operation, the receiver field will be larger than that of the transmitter, thus imposing less of a constraint on the tracking capability of the large optical instrument.

Investigation of the dielectric waveguide modes in homostructure GaAs laser.

The investigation of the propagation modes in a homostructure GaAs laser and particularly of the spatial displacement of the TE and TM mode is reported. For this investigation, a homostructure GaAs laser was operated in an external optical cavity and experiments were performed where the resonator alignment was varied to displace the image of the p-n junction, formed in the optical cavity, from the p-n junction of the laser diode. The peak power of the laser radiation (which is in the TEM (sub 00) mode), the delay, the optical waveform, and the polarization were measured at room temperature for different cavity alignments. For the evaluation of the propagation modes the experimental results are correlated with the computed field distributions of the modes in a three-layer dielectric waveguide.

Analysis of the first laser echoes obtained on the reflector of Luna 21

The international program of lunar telemetry, which has been in operation for three and one-half years, is intended to supply basic information for study of the lunar motion and the internal physics of the moon and the earth, particularly with reference to movement of the pole and displacements of plates. Laser echoes were obtained on Jan. 23, 1973 from the French reflector placed on the moon by Luna 21. Two series of firings, made with a 3-J laser radiated by the 2.7-m telescope of the McDonald Observatory (Texas) made it possible to identify significant echoes of an intensity comparable to those obtained with the reflector set down by Apollo 15. The path time measurements are compatible with normal coordinates.

New algae mapping technique by the use of an airborne laser fluorosensor.

An airborne laser fluorosensor for the detection of algae in the sea has been developed. The system transmits dye laser radiation at 590 nm and monitors the fluorescent emission at 685 nm from chlorophyll-a bearing microorganisms. The system was successfully flown over the test areas of Lake Ontario and Chesapeake Bay. The device is sensitive to a fraction of mg/cu-M chlorophyll-a density in the water from an altitude of 30 m.

Stimulated emission in multiple-photon-pumped xenon and argon excimers.

A pumping process involving the multiphoton absorption of laser radiation at 3547 and 2660 A is employed in the investigation. Typically, about 25% of the incident pumping radiation is absorbed and effective in producing excimer fluorescence. The four cases studied include 2660-A-pumped argon, 2660-A-pumped xenon, 3547-A-pumped xenon, and 3547-A-pumped argon. Results concerning the on-axis and off-axis fluorescence obtained from the excimers are presented in a graph.
