Planetary Mission Capability of Small Low-Power Solar Electric Propulsion Systems

There is currently a vigorous investigation underway of low-cost planetary missions using small, inexpensive spacecraft. In order to keep the total mission costs down either a medium class launch vehicle such as a Delta II or an intermediate class launch vehicle such as an Atlas IIA or Atlas IIAS would be required for these planetary missions.

Low-Mass, Low-Power Hall Thruster System

NASA is developing an electric propulsion system capable of producing 20 mN thrust with input power up to 1,000 W and specific impulse ranging from 1,600 to 3,500 seconds. The key technical challenge is the target mass of 1 kg for the thruster and 2 kg for the power processing unit (PPU). In Phase I, Busek Company, Inc., developed an overall subsystem design for the thruster/cathode, PPU, and xenon feed system. This project demonstrated the feasibility of a low-mass power processing architecture that replaces four of the DC-DC converters of a typical PPU with a single multifunctional converter and a low-mass Hall thruster design employing permanent magnets. In Phase II, the team developed an engineering prototype model of its low-mass BHT-600 Hall thruster system, with the primary focus on the low-mass PPU and thruster. The goal was to develop an electric propulsion thruster with the appropriate specific impulse and propellant throughput to enable radioisotope electric propulsion (REP). This is important because REP offers the benefits of nuclear electric propulsion without the need for an excessively large spacecraft and power system.

Reliability Considerations for Ultra- Low Power Space Applications

NASA, the aerospace community, and other high reliability (hi-rel) users of advanced microelectronic products face many challenges as technology continues to scale into the deep sub- micron region and ULP devices are sought after. Technology trends, ULP microelectronics, scaling and performance tradeoffs, reliability considerations, and spacecraft environments will be presented from a ULP perspective for space applications.

Low power dc arcjet operation with hydrogen/nitrogen propellant mixtures

The arcjet assembly from a flight model system was modified with a new thoriated tungsten nozzle insert and has been tested with hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures simulating the decomposition products of ammonia and hygrazine. Arcjet power consumption ranged from 0.7 to 1.15 kW depending on low rate, input current, and mixture composition. At a nominal 1 kW power level the ammonia mixtures thrust efficiency was about 0.31 at specific impulse values ranging between 460 and 500 sec. Hydrazine mixtures gave similar thrust efficiencies at the same power level with specific impulse values between 395 and 430 sec. Large, spontaneous voltage mode changes were not observed once the thruster had passed a period of instability immediately following start up. This period of instability, and the startup at low pressure, were seen as major causes of constrictor damage during the tests.

Commerical (terrestrial) and modified solar array design studies for low cost, low power space applications

The suitability of commercial (terrestrial) solar arrays for use in low Earth orbit is examined. It is shown that commercial solar arrays degrade under thermal cycling because of material flexure, and that certain types of silicones used in the construction of these arrays outgas severely. Based on the results, modifications were made. The modified array retains the essential features of typical commercial arrays and can be easily built by commercial fabrication techniques at low cost. The modified array uses a metal tray for containment, but eliminates the high outgassing potting materials and glass cover sheets. Cells are individually mounted with an adhesive and individually covered with glass cover slips, or clear plastic tape. The modified array is found to withstand severe thermal cycling for long intervals of time.

Monte Carlo and experimental studies of nozzle flow in a low-power hydrogen arcjet

The flow in the nozzle of a small hydrogen arcjet intended for low-thrust propulsion is studied without arc ignition using numerical and experimental techniques. The flow conditions in the thruster indicate that low-density nonequilibrium effects will significantly influence the flow. Therefore, the numerical analysis is undertaken using a Monte Carlo approach. The experimental studies employ laser Raman scattering. Comparisons of the measured and computed results are made for total number density, rotational temperature, and for the number density of the first rotational level. The numerical results are found to be quite sensitive to the rotational relaxation rate, and a strong degree of thermal nonequilibrium is observed at the exit plane of the nozzle. Successful comparisons between experiment and analysis permit estimation of the rotational relaxation rate for hydrogen.

Design of Low Power CMOS Read-Out with TDI Function for Infrared Linear Photodiode Array Detectors

A new low voltage CMOS infrared readout circuit using the buffer-direct injection method is presented. It uses a single supply voltage of 1.8 volts and a bias current of 1uA. The time-delay integration technique is used to increase the signal to noise ratio. A current memory circuit with faulty diode detection is used to remove dark current for background compensation and to disable a photodiode in a cell if detected as faulty. Simulations are shown that verify the circuit that is currently in fabrication in 0.5ym CMOS technology.

Compact Low Power Avionics for the Europa Lander Concept and Other Missions to Ocean Worlds

This paper presents the results of NASA’s Game Changing Technology development entitled “Ultra Low Temperature Electronics” and ColdTech technology effort entitled “Cold Survivable Distributed Motor Controller”. The purpose of these back-to-back projects is to address the Command & Data Handling (CDH), Power and Motor Control needs for missions to ocean worlds such as the potential Europa Lander project. We addressed the mass reduction challenge by developing the key technologies necessary to design a next generation compact motor control avionics. The project’s goal is to allow a Europa Lander to last longer on the surface and provide more room for additional science by reducing the volume, mass and power of its avionics and the amount of energy required to keep the avionics warm.
