Application of Lattice Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes Methods to NASA's Wall Mounted Hump

Lattice Boltzmann (LB) based Large Eddy Simulation (LES), Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) as well as hybrid RANS/LES methods within the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) solver framework are applied to NASA's wall-mounted hump. Computational results are compared with experiments performed by Greenblatt et al. A detailed comparison between the accuracy and resolution requirements of the two approaches for turbulence resolving simulations, as well as the suitability of different grid paradigms (body-fitted curvilinear and block structured Cartesian) are presented. This test case is part of NASA's Revolutionary Computational Aerosciences (RCA) sub-project which addresses the technical challenge of predicting flow separation and reattachment accurately. Improvements in predictive accuracy by as much as 90% are demonstrated using LB as well as hybrid RANS/LES approaches compared to state-of-the-art steady state RANS simulations.

Performance Enhancements for the Lattice-Boltzmann Solver in the LAVA Framework

Performance enhancements in NASA's recently developed Lattice Boltzmann solver within the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) framework are presented. Two key algorithmic developments are highlighted. A coarse-fine interface treatment that discretely conserves mass and momentum has been implemented and successfully verified and validated. Code optimizations targeting improved serial and parallel performance were presented. For a simple turbulent Taylor-Green Vortex problem, we were able to demonstrate a 2.3 times speedup over the baseline code for a single Skylake-SP node containing 40 physical cores, and a 2.14 times speedup for 64 nodes containing 2560 physical cores. In addition, we were able to show that the optimizations enabled us to scale the code almost perfectly to 20480 physical cores where, including ghost cells, the problem size was 10 billion cells.

Wall-Modeled Lattice Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes Approaches for Separated Flows

Lattice Boltzmann (LB) and hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large eddy simulation (RANS/LES) methods within the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) solver framework are applied to NASA's Revolutionary Computational Aerosciences (RCA) standard test cases for separated flows. A detailed comparison between the performance and accuracy of the two emerging numerical methodologies for turbulence resolving simulations, i.e. the LB and hybrid RANS/LES methods will be presented. This contribution addresses the RCA technical challenge to identify and down-select critical turbulence, transition, and numerical method technologies for 40% reduction in predictive error for standard turbulence separated flow test cases. Results for the 2D NASA wall-mounted hump and the axisymmetric transonic bump including time-averaged pressure coefficient, skin friction, and velocity pro les, as well as resolved and modeled Reynolds stresses for both numerical approaches will be presented and differences between LB and hybrid RANS/LES will be discussed.

Lattice Confinement Fusion and Fusion-Fast-Fission Energy Source Development

NASA and the US Navy have demonstrated Lattice Confinement Fusion (LCF) and the Fusion-Fast-Fission of natural uranium and thorium. Both methods build upon decades of research, and the latter benefits from conventional nuclear fission and fusion results. However, this nascent technology doesn’t require fissile isotopes and avoids nuclear weapons proliferation concerns from uranium 235U isotopic enrichment or plutonium 239Pu separation. Of particular note, LCF doesn’t need power hungry magnets, lasers, or particle beams. Potentially, it could provide watts to hundreds of kilowatts of electrical power and process heat suitable for space power and high Isp nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) as well as distributed terrestrial power. Finally, there are indications that LCF fast-fission products are more benign than those of conventional fission reactors. Our goal is to scale the reactions and increase the power output through higher temperature operation and increased material masses.

Low-Noise Propeller Design with the Vortex Lattice Method: Preliminary Results

The unsteady vortex lattice method (VLM) is a popular approach to mid-fidelity aerodynamic prediction. In this work, an unsteady VLM code is coupled with a form of Farassat’s formulation 1A acoustic analogy and used to design low-noise propellers via gradient-based optimization. Solutions to a few unexpected problems with computing the gradients of the VLM code are discussed, as are preliminary results for an isolated propeller and a propeller-wing interaction case.

Deployable lattice column

Lattice column, made up of many individually collapsible sections connected in tandem, rapidly raises measuring instruments to a level appreciably above that where data is to be recorded and evaluated. The column may be collapsed by collapsing each section in sequence and is deployed by extending each section in sequence.
