Reversible Methanolation of Metal Halide Perovskites

The low formation energies inherent in metal halide perovskites enable the structure to be easily broken and remade with little energy input. In this work, we leverage low formation energy to demonstrate 0D/3D structural transformations induced by reversible intercalation of methanol to yield dramatic control of visible light absorption. We identify a methanolated structure that features sheets of 0D isolated [PbI6]4- octahedra separated by MAI and methanol. Methanol and water reversibly displace each other in the 0D complex by controlling the chemical potential of the system via Le Chatelier's principle. The weaker H-bonding of methanol compared to water effectively reduces the complex dissociation temperature from 70 to 50 degrees C, rendering the methanol complex more desirable for an array of next-generation applications spanning low-power-consumption memory to switchable photovoltaics.

Tailoring Interfaces for Enhanced Methanol Production from Photoelectrochemical CO 2 Reduction

Efficient and stable photoelectrochemical reduction of CO 2 into highly reduced liquid fuels remains a formidable challenge, which requires an innovative semiconductor/catalyst interface to tackle. In this study, we introduce a strategy involving the fabrication of a silicon micropillar array structure coated with a superhydrophobic fluorinated carbon layer for the photoelectrochemical conversion of CO 2 into methanol. The pillars increase the electrode surface area, improve catalyst loading and adhesion without compromising light absorption, and help confine gaseous intermediates near the catalyst surface. The superhydrophobic coating passivates parasitic side reactions and further enhances local accumulation of reaction intermediates. Upon one-electron reduction of the molecular catalyst, the semiconductor–catalyst interface changes from adaptive to buried junctions, providing a sufficient thermodynamic driving force for CO 2 reduction. These structures together create a unique microenvironment for effective reduction of CO 2 to methanol, leading to a remarkable Faradaic efficiency reaching 20% together with a partial current density of 3.4 mA cm –2 , surpassing the previous record based on planar silicon photoelectrodes by a notable factor of 17. Furthermore, this work demonstrates a new pathway for enhancing photoelectrocatalytic CO 2 reduction through meticulous interface and microenvironment tailoring and sets a benchmark for both Faradaic efficiency and current density in solar liquid fuel production.

Time-Resolved X-ray Emission Spectroscopy and Synthetic High-Spin Model Complexes Resolve Ambiguities in Excited-State Assignments of Transition-Metal Chromophores: A Case Study of Fe-Amido Complexes

To fully harness the potential of abundant metal coordination complex photosensitizers, a detailed understanding of the molecular properties that dictate and control the electronic excited-state population dynamics initiated by light absorption is critical. In the absence of detectable luminescence, optical transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is the most widely employed method for interpreting electron redistribution in such excited states, particularly for those with a charge-transfer character. The assignment of excited-state TA spectral features often relies on spectroelectrochemical measurements, where the transient absorption spectrum generated by a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) electronic excited state, for instance, can be approximated using steady-state spectra generated by electrochemical ligand reduction and metal oxidation and accounting for the loss of absorptions by the electronic ground state. However, the reliability of this approach can be clouded when multiple electronic configurations have similar optical signatures. Using a case study of Fe(II) complexes supported by benzannulated diarylamido ligands, we highlight an example of such an ambiguity and show how time-resolved X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) measurements can reliably assign excited states from the perspective of the metal, particularly in conjunction with accurate synthetic models of ligand-field electronic excited states, leading to a reinterpretation of the long-lived excited state as a ligand-field metal-centered quintet state. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the XES data on the long-lived excited state is presented, along with a discussion of the ultrafast dynamics following the photoexcitation of low-spin Fe(II)-N amido complexes using a high-spin ground-state analogue as a spectral model for the 5 T 2 excited state.

Precise Synthesis of Complex Si–Si Molecular Frameworks

In this Perspective, we highlight the emergence of target-oriented syntheses of complex molecules composed of Si–Si (oligosilanes) rather than C–C bonds. Saturated oligosilanes structurally resemble alkanes with respect to a tetrahedral geometry, a preference for a staggered conformation in linear chains, the ability to form stable small rings, and tetrahedral stereochemistry at asymmetrically functionalized Si centers. There are also critical differences, for example, differences in multiple bonding and the ability to form penta- and hexacoordinated structures, that mean that chemical reactivity and, in particular, rules for stereoselective synthesis do not cleanly translate from carbon to silicon. This Perspective will discuss recent achievements in the precise, controlled synthesis of complex molecules comprised mainly of Si–Si bonds and highlight the mechanistic insights enabling increased molecular complexity. New tools, such as electrochemical and catalytic reactions, will be discussed as well as the problem of controlling relative configuration in molecules containing multiple stereogenic-at-silicon centers. Furthermore, these synthetic achievements facilitate the discovery of new properties, including insight into light absorption, conformation, and mechanical properties.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

Single-layered organic photovoltaics with double cascading charge transport pathways: 18% efficiencies

The chemical structure of donors and acceptors limit the power conversion efficiencies achievable with active layers of binary donor-acceptor mixtures. Here, using quaternary blends, double cascading energy level alignment in bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic active layers are realized, enabling efficient carrier splitting and transport. Numerous avenues to optimize light absorption, carrier transport, and charge-transfer state energy levels are opened by the chemical constitution of the components. Record-breaking PCEs of 18.07% are achieved where, by electronic structure and morphology optimization, simultaneous improvements of the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and fill factor occur. The donor and acceptor chemical structures afford control over electronic structure and charge-transfer state energy levels, enabling manipulation of hole-transfer rates, carrier transport, and non-radiative recombination losses.

Engineered disorder in CO 2 photocatalysis

Light harvesting, separation of charge carriers, and surface reactions are three fundamental steps that are essential for an efficient photocatalyst. Here we show that these steps in the TiO 2 can be boosted simultaneously by disorder engineering. A solid-state reduction reaction between sodium and TiO 2 forms a core-shell c-TiO 2 @a-TiO 2-x (OH) y heterostructure, comprised of HO-Ti-[O]-Ti surface frustrated Lewis pairs (SFLPs) embedded in an amorphous shell surrounding a crystalline core, which enables a new genre of chemical reactivity. Specifically, these SFLPs heterolytically dissociate dihydrogen at room temperature to form charge-balancing protonated hydroxyl groups and hydrides at unsaturated titanium surface sites, which display high reactivity towards CO 2 reduction. This crystalline-amorphous heterostructure also boosts light absorption, charge carrier separation and transfer to SFLPs, while prolonged carrier lifetimes and photothermal heat generation further enhance reactivity. The collective results of this study motivate a general approach for catalytically generating sustainable chemicals and fuels through engineered disorder in heterogeneous CO 2 photocatalysts.

Unified theoretical framework for black carbon mixing state allows greater accuracy of climate effect estimation

Black carbon (BC) plays an important role in the climate system because of its strong warming effect, yet the magnitude of this effect is highly uncertain owing to the complex mixing state of aerosols. Here we build a unified theoretical framework to describe BC’s mixing states, linking dynamic processes to BC coating thickness distribution, and show its self-similarity for sites in diverse environments. The size distribution of BC-containing particles is found to follow a universal law and is independent of BC core size. A new mixing state module is established based on this finding and successfully applied in global and regional models, which increases the accuracy of aerosol climate effect estimations. Our theoretical framework links observations with model simulations in both mixing state description and light absorption quantification.

Solution processed high aspect ratio ultra-long vertically well-aligned ZnO nano scintillators for potential X-ray imaging applications

We report the photon (PL), electron (CL) and X-ray (XEL) induced luminescence characteristics of high aspect ratio ultra-long (~ 50 µm) ZnO nanorods (NRs) and discuss the potential for fast X-ray detection based on the consistent and efficient visible emission (~ 580 nm) from ZnO NRs. Nanostructured ZnO scintillators were rearranged to form a vertically well-aligned NR design in order to help light absorption and coupling resulting in luminescent and fast scintillation properties. The design of the nanorod array combines the key advantages of a low-cost growth technique together with environmentally friendly and widely available materials. A low temperature hydrothermal method was adopted to grow ZnO NRs in one cycle growth and their structural, optical and X-ray scintillation properties were investigated. The relatively short (~ 10 µm) ZnO NRs emitting in the near-band-edge region were found to be almost insensitive to X-rays. On the other hand, the higher XEL response of long ZnO NRs, which is a key parameter for evaluation of materials to be used as scintillators for high quality X-ray detection and imaging, along with a decay time response in the order of ns confirmed promising scintillation properties for fast and high-resolution X-ray detector applications.

Perovskite-driven solar C 2 hydrocarbon synthesis from CO 2

Photoelectrochemistry (PEC) presents a direct pathway to solar fuel synthesis by integrating light absorption and catalysis into compact electrodes. Yet, PEC hydrocarbon production remains elusive due to high catalytic overpotentials and insufficient semiconductor photovoltage. Here we demonstrate ethane and ethylene synthesis by interfacing lead halide perovskite photoabsorbers with suitable copper nanoflower electrocatalysts. The resulting perovskite photocathodes attain a 9.8% Faradaic yield towards C 2 hydrocarbon production at 0 V against the reversible hydrogen electrode. The catalyst and perovskite geometric surface areas strongly influence C 2 photocathode selectivity, which indicates a role of local current density in product distribution. The thermodynamic limitations of water oxidation are overcome by coupling the photocathodes to Si nanowire photoanodes for glycerol oxidation. These unassisted perovskite–silicon PEC devices attain partial C 2 hydrocarbon photocurrent densities of 155 µA cm -2 , 200-fold higher than conventional perovskite–BiVO 4 artificial leaves for water and CO 2 splitting. These insights establish perovskite semiconductors as a versatile platform towards PEC multicarbon synthesis.

Spectroscopic characterization of a new Re(i) tricarbonyl complex with a thiosemicarbazone derivative: towards sensing and electrocatalytic applications

This work describes the preparation of a new thiosemicarbazone derivative, (Z)- N -ethyl-2-(6-oxo-1,10-phenanthrolin-5(6 H )-ylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (phet) and its respective Re( I ) tricarbonyl chloro complex, fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)]. The spectroscopic, photophysical and electrochemical properties of the new complex were fully investigated through steady state and time-resolved techniques along with computational calculations. In fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)], the new ligand is coordinated to the metal center through the pyridyl rings of the phenanthroline moiety. The unbound electron pairs in the S atom of the bending thiosemicarbazone group induce new low energy lying electronic transitions. Consequently, enhanced visible light absorption up to 550 nm is observed in acetonitrile due to the overlap between MLCT Re→phet and IL phet(n→π*) transitions. The absorption bands and emission quantum yields of fac -[ReCl(CO) 3 (phet)] are sensitive to proton concentration due to an acid-basic equilibrium in the N atoms of the thiosemicarbazone. Proton dissociation constants of 10.0 ± 0.1 and 11.4 ± 0.2 were determined respectively for the ground and excited states of the new complex. Spectral changes could also be observed in the presence of Zn 2+ cations which can be further explored for sensing applications. The electrochemical behavior of the new complex was studied in detail, revealing up to four one electron reduction processes in the range from 0 to -2.4 V vs. Fc + /Fc. With support of DFT calculations, the first three processes are ascribed to the reduction of the coordinated phet ligand followed by the Re I/0 reduction and consequent Cl - release. Furthermore, the new complex was able to act as an electrocatalyst for CO 2 reduction into CO ( E onset = -1.92 V vs. Fc + /Fc), with a turnover frequency of 2.81 s -1 and turnover number of 24 ± 1 in anhydrous acetonitrile, being the first Re( I ) tricarbonyl complex with a thiosemicarbazone derivative described for this goal. The detailed characterization carried out here can drive the development of new Re( I )-thiosemicarbazone derivatives for different applications.

Narrowing the band gap and suppressing electron–hole recombination in β-Fe 2 O 3 by chlorine doping

Here, the effects of halogen (F, Cl, Br, I, and At) doping in the direct-band-gap β-Fe 2 O 3 semiconductor on its band structures and electron–hole recombination have been investigated by density functional theory. Doping Br, I, and At in β-Fe 2 O 3 leads to transformation from a direct-band-gap semiconductor to an indirect-band-gap semiconductor because their atomic radii are too large; however, F- and Cl-doped β-Fe 2 O 3 remain as direct-band-gap semiconductors. Due to the deep impurity states of the F dopant, this study focuses on the effects of the Cl dopant on the band structures of β-Fe 2 O 3 . Two impurity levels are introduced when Cl is doped into β-Fe 2 O 3 , which narrows the band gap by approximately 0.3 eV. After doping Cl, the light-absorption edge of β-Fe 2 O 3 redshifts from 650 to 776 nm, indicating that its theoretical solar to hydrogen efficiency for solar water splitting increases from 20.6% to 31.4%. In addition, the effective mass of the holes in halogen-doped β-Fe 2 O 3 becomes significantly larger than that in undoped β-Fe 2 O 3 , which may suppress electron–hole recombination.

Codesign of an integrated metal–insulator–semiconductor photocathode for photoelectrochemical reduction of CO 2 to ethylene

Photoelectrochemical carbon-dioxide reduction (PEC CO 2 R) is a potentially attractive means for producing chemicals and fuels using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide; however, this technology is in its infancy. To date, most studies of PEC CO 2 R have reported products containing one carbon atom (C 1 products) but the production of valuable products containing two or more carbons (C 2+ products), such as ethylene, ethanol, etc., is rarely demonstrated. Metal–semiconductor–insulator (MIS) photocathode/catalyst structures offer a promising approach for this purpose, since they integrate the functions of light absorption, charge separation, and catalysis. In this study, we have investigated a Cu/TiO 2 /p-Si photocathode/catalyst structure with the aim of establishing the effects of semiconductor–insulator interactions on the performance of the photocathode and the influence of the direction of illumination of the MIS structure on the total current density and the distribution of products formed by on the Cu catalyst. Here, we have also examined the influence of ionomer coatings deposited on the Cu surface on the total current density and the distribution of products formed. A major finding is that for a fixed Cu potential the distribution of products formed by PEC CO 2 R are the same, irrespective of the direction of illumination, and are identical to those obtained by electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (EC CO 2 R). Another important finding is that the total current density and the faradaic efficiency to ethylene are enhanced significantly by deposition of a thin bilayer of Sustainion/Nafion onto the surface of the Cu.

Controlled monodefluorination and alkylation of C(sp 3 )–F bonds by lanthanide photocatalysts: importance of metal–ligand cooperativity

The controlled functionalization of a single fluorine in a CF 3 group is difficult and rare. Photochemical C–F bond functionalization of the sp 3 -C–H bond in trifluorotoluene, PhCF 3 , is achieved using catalysts made from earth-abundant lanthanides, (Cp Me4 ) 2 Ln(2-O-3,5- t Bu 2 -C 6 H 2 )(1-C{N(CH) 2 N( i Pr)}) (Ln = La, Ce, Nd and Sm, Cp Me4 = C 5 Me 4 H). The Ce complex is the most effective at mediating hydrodefluorination and defluoroalkylative coupling of PhCF 3 with alkenes; addition of magnesium dialkyls enables catalytic C–F bond cleavage and C–C bond formation by all the complexes. Mechanistic experiments confirm the essential role of the Lewis acidic metal and support an inner-sphere mechanism of C–F activation. Computational studies agree that coordination of the C–F substrate is essential for C–F bond cleavage. The unexpected catalytic activity for all members is made possible by the light-absorbing ability of the redox non-innocent ligands. The results described herein underscore the importance of metal–ligand cooperativity, specifically the synergy between the metal and ligand in both light absorption and redox reactivity, in organometallic photocatalysis.

Photocatalytic dechlorination of unactivated chlorocarbons including PVC using organolanthanide complexes

Simple lanthanide cyclopentadienyl (Cp) complexes can photochemically cleave the sp 3 carbon–chlorine bond of unactivated chlorinated hydrocarbons including polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Further, the excited state lifetimes of these simple complexes are among the longest observed for cerium complexes (175 ns for [(Cp Me4 ) 2 Ce(μ-Cl)] 2 ) and the light absorption by the Cp ligand is efficient, so photocatalytic reactivity is enhanced for cerium and now also made possible for neighboring, normally photoinactive, lanthanide congeners.

ZnGa 2 Te 4 thin-film absorbers for photoelectrochemical CO 2 reduction

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) has been considered as a promising route to convert and store solar energy into chemical fuels. It is crucial to find suitable photoelectrode materials that are photo-catalytically active and exhibit excellent photochemical stability. One of the promising contenders is ZnTe with the ∼2.26 eV band gap and prolonged stability under CO 2 RR PEC conditions. Herein, a new telluride based thin-film ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocathode with lower band gap and stronger visible light absorption compared to ZnTe is synthesized and characterized using a combinatorial sputtering technique. A two-step annealing method with excess Te supply is implemented to synthesize nearly stoichiometric ZnGa 2 Te 4 absorber material with a zincblende-derived tetragonal crystal structure confirmed by synchrotron X-ray and electron diffraction. Theoretical calculations show that ZnGa 2 Te 4 has suitable direct bandgap (∼1.86 eV) and high absorption coefficient ∼10 5 cm −1 , in agreement with experimentally prepared films. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals the biexponential decay dynamics, with time constants, τ 1 ∼ 0.04, and τ 2 ∼ 0.65 μs in microsecond time scales and provides the optical transition pathways for this semiconductor thin film. PEC measurements show that the ZnGa 2 Te 4 photocurrent densities are comparable to the widely investigated ZnTe photocathodes or even surpass it under simulated sunlight condition. ZnGa 2 Te 4 samples demonstrate promising photoelectrochemical stability, maintaining consistent performance under illumination. The inclusion of diaryliodonium additive substantially increases its CO 2 RR selectivity to ∼60%. These findings open a new avenue for the synthesis of telluride-based thin-film photocathodes for further exploration and will motivate future research to integrate this potential photocathode material into PEC devices.
