Spatio-temporal Fourier Transformer for Long-term Dynamics Prediction (StFT) v1.0

We propose a novel machine learning model spatio-temporal Fourier transformer (StFT) to emulate long-term dynamics of multi-scale and multi-physics systems. Our method StFT overcomes the limitations of rapid error accumulation, particularly in long-term forecasting of systems characterized by complex and coupled dynamics. StFT achieves outstanding accuracy and computational efficiency by effectively capturing multi-scale interactions, and quantify the uncertainties inherent in the predictions. Our model leverages a structured hierarchy of StFT blocks, and explicitly captures dynamics across both macro- and micro- spatial scales. Evaluations conducted on three benchmark datasets (plasma, fluid, and atmospheric dynamics) demonstrate the advantages of our approach over state-of-the-art ML methods.

Architectural concepts and redundancy techniques in fault-tolerant computers

This paper presents a description of redundancy techniques employed in the design of fault-tolerant computers, and a discussion of the effects of functional requirements, technology constraints, and cost considerations which enter into the choice of these techniques. The STAR computer, developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for long-duration planetary spacecraft missions, is discussed along with several later fault-tolerant computer designs. The class of computers described in this paper employs dynamic redundancy, i.e., the machine is divided into a set of submodules, each with standby spares; a special hard core monitor unit detects and diagnoses faults, and effects automated recovery by replacing failed parts.

Garbage collection can be made real-time and verifiable

An efficient means of memory reclamation (also known as Garbage Collection) is essential for Machine Intelligence applications where dynamic storage allocation is desired or required. Solutions for real-time systems must introduce very small processing overhead and must also provide for the verification of the software in order to meet the application time budgets and to verify the correctness of the software. Garbage Collection (GC) techniques are proposed for symbolic processing systems which may simultaneously meet both real-time requirements and verification requirements. The proposed memory reclamation technique takes advantage of the strong points of both the earlier Mark and Sweep technique and the more recent Copy Collection approaches. At least one practical implementation of these new GC techniques has already been developed and tested on a very-high performance symbolic computing system. Complete GC processing of all generated garbage has been demonstrated to require as little as a few milliseconds to perform. This speed enables the effective operation of the GC function as either a background task or as an actual part of the application task itself.

Fast Fourier Transform algorithm design and tradeoffs

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a mainstay of certain numerical techniques for solving fluid dynamics problems. The Connection Machine CM-2 is the target for an investigation into the design of multidimensional Single Instruction Stream/Multiple Data (SIMD) parallel FFT algorithms for high performance. Critical algorithm design issues are discussed, necessary machine performance measurements are identified and made, and the performance of the developed FFT programs are measured. Fast Fourier Transform programs are compared to the currently best Cray-2 FFT program.

The NASA Program Management Tool: A New Vision in Business Intelligence

This paper describes a novel approach to business intelligence and program management for large technology enterprises like the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Two key distinctions of the approach are that 1) standard business documents are the user interface, and 2) a "schema-less" XML database enables flexible integration of technology information for use by both humans and machines in a highly dynamic environment. The implementation utilizes patent-pending NASA software called the NASA Program Management Tool (PMT) and its underlying "schema-less" XML database called Netmark. Initial benefits of PMT include elimination of discrepancies between business documents that use the same information and "paperwork reduction" for program and project management in the form of reducing the effort required to understand standard reporting requirements and to comply with those reporting requirements. We project that the underlying approach to business intelligence will enable significant benefits in the timeliness, integrity and depth of business information available to decision makers on all organizational levels.

High-Fidelity Simulations of HyMETS Arc-Jet Flows for PICA-N Modeling

Arc-jet testing is a fundamental tool in the screening of thermal protection systems under atmospheric entry conditions. In this work, high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations coupled with machine learning methods for the Hypersonic Materials Environmental Test System arc-jet facility have been carried out. This effort improves the MEDLI-2 data reconstruction fidelity by understanding the impact of the NuSil coating over the PICA thermocouple plugs. Thermochemical non-equilibrium models are employed to simulate the flows inside the arc-jet nozzle and chamber and machine learning techniques are used to calibrate the arc-jet inflow conditions. The material response is simulated with the recession and in-depth numerical results compared to experimental measurements.

Predictive Modeling to Assess and Address Challenges and Limitations Associated with Clinical Care and Decision Support in Deep Space

Probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) is a method for assessing and integrating the risk of failure in a multivariate system. While it is often applied by engineers designing complex machines, it could also be applied to humans to assess the probability of a health “failure” treating diseases as the multiple “variables” and the human as the “complex machine.” The Medical Extensible Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment Tool (MEDPRAT) was developed to apply PRA to assess medical risk for exploration spaceflight and inform the design of medical systems for space flight. The NASA engineering community utilizes event-driven and fault tree probabilistic techniques to classify risk in the space flight environment by leveraging the inherent knowledge of complex space flight system design and testing to quantify risk. However, in harmonizing the risk of human space flight, answering the question of “How do we balance astronaut health, performance and resource risks with other engineering risks on exploration space missions?” remains a profoundly challenging and largely qualitative practice. The Medical Extensible Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment Tool (MEDPRAT) is one aspect of the Human Research Program’s efforts to represent space fight human health and performance risks quantitatively.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory Neutron Spin Echo Beamline on NB-2

Neutron Spin Echo (NSE) spectroscopy uniquely measures the Q-dependence of slow relaxation dynamics, and having such a machine at HFIR will advance polarized neutron spectroscopy and promote the study of biophysical and energy materials using neutrons. The 2018 Instrument Advisory Board (IAB) advises Neutron Sciences Directorate, ORNL to upgrade the cold neutron delivery system at HFIR, addressing geometrical challenges in neutron transfer from the bright cold source. This is being optimized now: the entrance to the guide system is moving closer to the source, and more guides are being added. However, there are still significant challenges to making the cold flux at the sample world-class. With the proposed guide system, NB-2 can deliver more than 10 6 polarized neutrons per cm 2 /sec below 8Å, and probably 10Å with further optimization. With no potential for running user experiments with neutrons longer than 15Å, the utility of such a machine for biological studies is limited. However, there is a large demand for this class of spectrometer in materials science, chemical engineering, and nanotechnology. Workshops held over the past decade and the three-source vision have highlighted the community's need for a low-angle, high-energy resolution spectrometer at HFIR. A detailed design study of this spectrometer is needed, focusing on optimizing the neutron delivery system for SANS-type studies. This neutron spectrometer would complement studies already performed on both SNSNSE and BASIS by overlapping and extend the dynamic range accessible, while acknowledging the proposed machine, EXPANSE, at the Second Target Station. Two technologies currently exist for such a spectrometer: traditional DC solenoids like those on BL-15 at SNS and IN15 at the ILL, and RF-flipper-based machines similar to RESEDA at FRMII. Either instrument would satisfy the scientific justification. However, there are strong business and scientific cases to utilize the thermal flux, the resonant expertise developed at ORNL, and the potential to utilize an entangled beam of neutrons to probe quantum matter by adopting the neutron resonant spin-echo configuration.

Unexpected Observation of Disorder and Multiple Phase-Transition Pathways in Shock-Compressed Zr

The response of materials under dynamic compression involves a complex interplay of various deformation mechanisms aimed at relieving shear stresses, yielding a remarkable diversity in material behavior. Here, in this Letter, we utilize femtosecond x-ray diffraction coupled with nanosecond laser compression to reveal an intricate competition between multiple shear-relieving mechanisms within an elemental metal. Our observations in shocked-compressed single-crystal Zr indicate a disorder-mediated shear relaxation at lower pressures. Above the phase-transition pressure, we observe the increasing contribution of structural phase transition in relieving shear stress. We detect not one but three concurrent pathways during the transition from the hcp to a hex-3 structure. These complex dynamics are partially corroborated through multimillion-atom molecular dynamics simulations employing a machine-learned interatomic potential. Our observation of multiple concurrent pathways and disorder during shock compression underscore the far greater intricacies in the dynamic response of metals than previously assumed.

Dynamical Simulation of Probabilities

It has been demonstrated that classical probabilities, and in particular, probabilistic Turing machine, can be simulated by combining chaos and non-Lipschitz dynamics, without utilization of any man-made devices(such as random number generators). Self-orgainizing properties of systems coupling simulated and calculated probabilities and their link to quantum computations are discussed. Special attention was focused upon coupled stochastic processes, defined in terms of conditional probabilities, for which joint probability does not exist. Simulations of quantum probabilities are also discussed.
