Survey of tungsten gross erosion from main plasma facing components in WEST during a L-mode high fluence campaign

An initial high fluence campaign was performed in WEST, in 2023, on the newly installed actively cooled tungsten divertor composed of ITER-grade monoblocks. The campaign consisted in the repetition of a 60 s long Deuterium L-mode pulse in attached divertor conditions, cumulating over 10000s of plasma exposure. A maximum deuterium fluence of approximately 5⋅1⁢026 m−2 was reached in the outer strike point region, representative of a few high performance ITER pulses. Gross tungsten erosion inferred from visible spectroscopy shows that the most eroded plasma facing component is the inner divertor target with rates ten times larger than on the outer divertor target. The outer midplane tungsten bumpers, located a few centimeters from the plasma, show gross erosion rates two times lower than at the outer divertor. We conclude that the outer midplane bumpers have a negligible contribution to the long range tungsten migration and deposition onto the lower divertor. The cumulated gross erosion rate on the inner divertor translates in an effective gross erosion thickness of about 20μ⁢m, while it is about 2μ⁢m for the outer divertor. Strikingly, these orderings coincide with the thickness of deposits found locally on the divertor: the exposed surfaces of high field side monoblocks are covered with several tens of μ⁢m tungsten deposits, while on the lower field side, few μ⁢m thin tungsten deposits are only found on the magnetically shadowed parts of monoblocks. The strong impact of those deposits on WEST operation, namely perturbation of surface temperature measurement with infra-red thermography, and the emission of flakes causing radiative perturbation of the confined plasma, calls for anticipating similar issues in ITER. In particular, the start of research operation shall consider the definition of a divertor erosion budget in order to anticipate the formation of deleterious deposits.

Soil compartments (bulk soil, litter, root and rhizosphere) as main drivers of soil protistan communities distribution in forests with different nitrogen deposition

Protists, in particular bacterivores, are essential players in the rhizosphere; thus, how their interactions with bacteria and fungi affect plant productivity and soil nutrient cycles warrants more attention. Using next-generation sequencing of the 18 S rRNA gene, we investigated the distribution of two major protistan phyla, Cercozoa and Endomyxa, across four seasons, and four soil compartments - rhizosphere, root, soil and litter. The sampling was replicated in two forests in Norway and the Czech Republic, in order to test our results across biogeographic scales. Compartment had a major influence in shaping protistan communities, over and above spatial distance and seasonal variation. Protistan diversity was highest in the bulk soil while lowest in the roots, suggesting that the plants select for restricted assemblages of protists. Accordingly, only the root compartment harboured a subset of the bulk soil protistan diversity. In addition, protistan communities showed markedly different distributions according to their feeding modes, with opposite patterns for bacterivores versus omnivores and eukaryvores. The small bacterivorous flagellates (mostly Glissomonadida) were more abundant in roots, while the larger amoeboid eukaryvores (e.g. some of the Cryomonadida and vampyrellids) dominated in soil and in the rhizosphere, and the omnivores (e.g. Euglyphida and part of the Cercomonadida), also large and mostly amoeboid, were more abundant in litter. The current view of the soil microbiome is mostly focused on bacteria and fungi: this detailed study on the community distribution of protists according to their feeding modes reveals the essential role they play in each of the soil compartments, an essential precondition for a detailed understanding of the soil food web and nutrient cycling in forest.

Structural Investigation of Six Quinary Sulfides Synthesized via the Flux-Assisted Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Eu 2+ Containing Members of the RE 3 MTQ 7 (M and T = Transition or Main Group Metals, Q = Chalcogens) Family

For this work, a series of six quinary rare-earth sulfides Ce 4+ 1.85 Eu 2+ 1.15 Na 0.30 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.91 Eu 2+ 1.09 K 0.18 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.96 Eu 2+ 1.04 Rb 0.08 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.98 Eu 2+ 1.02 Cs 0.05 SiS 7 , Ce 4+ 1.97 Eu 2+ 1.03 Ag 0.06 SiS 7 , and Ce 4+ 1.50 Eu 2+ 1.50 CuSiS 7 were obtained in an alkali iodide flux using the boron-chalcogen mixture (BCM) method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structures of the high quality single crystals that were grown; their elemental compositions were confirmed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The compounds crystallize in the hexagonal crystal system in the noncentrosymmetric space group P63. The crystal structure consists of a three-dimensional network composed of mixed cerium and europium bicapped trigonal prisms, isolated SiS4 tetrahedra, and monovalent metals (Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ag, and Cu) located in cavities created by linked Ce/EuS 8 polyhedra. The structures are charge-balanced when Ce and Eu are in their +4 and +2 oxidation states, respectively. The effective magnetic moment of Ce 1.50 4+ Eu 1.50 2+ CuSiS 7 determined from the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility data is consistent with the presence of Ce 4+ and Eu 2+ . Clear correlations between the alkali ion site occupancy, the ionic radius of the alkali cations, and the average bond length of Ce 4+ /Eu 2+ –S, were established. UV–vis diffuse reflectance data were collected for Ce 1.50 4+ Eu 1.50 2+ CuSiS 7 and a band gap of 1.9(1) eV was established.
