Design Thinking, Lean Startup, and High-Technology Marketing for Human-Centered Systems Engineering

The use of design thinking, lean startup, and high-technology marketing in systems engineering are presented as a case study. All were used and evaluated for their potential to improve systems engineering processes and design, address the challenges of culture change, increase the adoption rate of new technology, and engage with potential users and sponsors more effectively. Multiple examples of training and use on a model-based systems engineering initiative at a large government agency showcase how these approaches were tailored and used successfully for significant benefits such as enhanced collaboration and better problem definition and design solutions. Challenges remain for use by quiet thinkers and with virtual teams. These new ways of thinking are well aligned with creating and using new technologies and are suitable for situations involving innovation, uncertainty, and change within organizations. This case study intends to familiarize systems engineers with the application of these human-centered approaches, to interest systems engineers in incorporating these approaches into their work processes ,and to inspire the systems engineering research community to investigate further.

Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team Clinical Decision Support Market Survey

NASA’s Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team (XMIPT) has identified Clinical Decision Support (CDS) technology as a critical need for future human space exploration. Such technology will support real time diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of spaceflight medical conditions. The need for such tools and support systems is critical for in-mission clinical decision-making, especially when Earth-based support is unavailable due to communication delays or blackouts. Supporting technologies may or may not involve Artificial Intelligence (AI), and would support astronaut crew with minimal clinical training, or even those with advanced training if they are, for example, in need of a refresher, experiencing multiple stressors, or temporarily overloaded with tasking. This need traces to the Development of Earth Independent Operations Technologies for NASA’s Mars Campaign Office. The CDS Market Survey purpose, methods, outcomes thus far, and near-term steps will be discussed.

Experimental Results of LightSAR Mision Planning Using a Market-Based System

The allocation of scarce spacecraft resources to multiple users has always been a difficult process. This difficulty arises from the fact that there are never enough resources to meet the stated requirements of the scientific investigators who compete to acquire their desired data sets.

An Analysis of Airline Costs. Lecture Notes for MIT Courses. 16.73 Airline Management and Marketing

The cost analyst must understand the operations of the airline and how the activities of the airline are measured, as well as how the costs are incurred and recorded. The data source is usually a cost accounting process. This provides data on the cumulated expenses in various categories over a time period like a quarter, or year, and must be correlated by the analyst with cumulated measures of airline activity which seem to be causing this expense.

Zinc-rich coatings: A market survey

Zinc-rich coatings with both organic and inorganic binders were considered for coastal bridges which require more corrosion protection than inland bridges because of exposure to salt spray and fog. Inorganics give longer protection and may be applied without a finish coat; those currently available are harder to apply than organics. The NASA potassium silicate/zinc - dust coating appears to provide longer protection, resist thermal shock, and overcome the application problem. Panels coated with the formulation withstood 5308 hours in a salt spray chamber with no rusting or blistering.
