Fuel injector including a lobed mixer and vanes for injecting alternate fuels in a gas turbine

A fuel injector for injecting alternate fuels having a different energy density in a gas turbine is provided. A first fuel supply channel (18) may be fluidly coupled to a radial passage (22) in a plurality of vanes (20) that branches into passages (24) (e.g., axial passages) to inject a first fuel without jet in cross-flow injection. This may be effective to reduce flashback in fuels having a relatively high flame speed. A mixer (30) with lobes (32) for injection of a second fuel may be arranged at the downstream end of a fuel delivery tube (12). A fuel-routing structure (38) may be configured to route the second fuel within a respective lobe so that fuel injection of the second fuel takes place radially outwardly relative to a central region of the mixer. This may be conducive to an improved (e.g., a relatively more uniform) mixing of air and fuel.

Replaceable Paddle Tip Fabrication and Testing for Saltstone Production Facility (SPF) Mixer (FY2020 Update)

Details of the operations and issues related to the paddles used in the Saltstone Production Facility (SPF) employing the 10-inch READCO ™ -Kurimoto co-rotating dual shaft continuous mixer are provided in SRNL-ST1-2019-00142, Based on a recent effort performed by the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) and funded by Savannah River Remediation (SRR), eight different replaceable paddle designs were proposed and the angled notched design was selected for this study. This design was selected over the other designs due to its simplicity and its ability to meet the fitness of duty requirements. There are two types of angled notched replaceable tip designs, one being flat and the other helical. Either of these designs can be used for blending the premix with the salt solution. Stress calculations performed on this design (the use of the bolts and connections) are documented in M-CLC-Z-00137 showing it was suitable for use.

Measurements of noise in Josephson-effect mixers

We present new heterodyne receiver results obtained at 100 GHz using resistively-shunted Nb and NbN tunnel junctions. In addition, we have carried out accurate measurements of the available noise power of these devices at the L-band (1.5 GHz) IF (infrasonic) frequency. Both the heterodyne and the output noise measurements show that the noise of these devices can be a factor of five or more higher than that predicted by the simple current-biased RSJ model. The noise approaches the appropriate thermal or thermal and shot noise limits for bias voltages where the nonlinearity is not strong (i.e., V greater than I(sub C)R(sub N)), but as expected from the RSJ model, can be significantly higher at the low voltages where the mixers are typically biased. The bias voltage dependence of the noise shows structure which is associated with resonances in the RF embedding circuit. Surprisingly, we find that changes in the high-frequency (100 GHz) impedance presented to the junction can dramatically affect the magnitude and voltage dependence of the low-frequency (1.5 GHz) noise. This emphasizes the necessity of very closely matching the junction to free space over a wide frequency range.

An All-Optical Microwave Mixer with 8db RF Gain

An all-optical microwave mixer with an 8dB RF gain is demonstrated by using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). 6GHz RF signal on a 1312 nm optical carrier is up-converted and down-converted to 1GHZ and 11 GHz by a 5GHz local oscillation (LO) signal on a 1320 nm optical carrier. Such a carrier could readily extend to millimeter wave range.
