Short-range correlations in carbon-12, oxygen-16, and neon-20: Intrinsic properties

The Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) method has been applied to nuclei whose intrinsic structure is nonspherical. Reaction matrix elements were calculated as functions of starting energy for the Hamada-Johnston interaction using the Pauli operator appropriate to O-16 and a shifted oscillator spectrum for virtual excited states. Binding energies, single particle energies, radii, and shape deformations of the intrinsic state, in ordinary as well as renormalized BHF, are discussed and compared with previous HF studies and with experiment when possible. Results are presented for C-12, 0-16 and Ne-20. It is found that the binding energies and radii are too small, but that separation energies are well reproduced when the renormalized theory is used.

Solar wind rare gas analysis: Trapped solar wind helium and neon in Surveyor 3 material

The He-4 and Ne-20 contents in sections of the Surveyor 3 support strut samples were determined by optical and scanning electron microscopy and are compared to the results of the Apollo solar wind composition (SWC) experiments. The He-4/Ne-20 ratio in the samples from the sunlit side of the strut was approximately 300; the ratios determined in Apollo 12 lunar fines and SWC foil were below 100. The He-4/He-3 ratios were also determined, and the ratio obtained from Surveyor 3 material is higher than those found with Apollo 11 and 12 SWC experiments. The effects of spallation by cosmic rays or solar protons, stripping by cosmic ray or energetic solar alpha particles, recycling of solar wind He and radiogenic Ne, He from terrestrial atmosphere, mass discrimination near the moon, mass dependence of trapping probability, diffusion, and contamination by lunar dust are considered.

New lines of neon ions in the range 50-200 A.

About 180 new spectral lines of Ne V, Ne VI, Ne VII, and Ne VIII have been measured and identified on spectrograms obtained from a large theta-pinch apparatus. The spectrograms covered the range from 50 to 200 A. The lines were classified by means of isoelectronic extrapolations and interpolations.

Charge exchange in zinc-neon

Excitation of the 4d and 5p levels of Zn+ by charge exchange bewteen Ne+ and Zn was investigated. From measured electron temperature and line intensity ratios it was concluded that charge exchange is the dominate mechanism for populating the 4d2D5/2 level of Zn+. Comparison of Zn-Ne and Zn-Ar results imply the same conclusion. No evidence for charge exchange as the dominant pumping mechanism for the 5p2Pl/2, 5p2P3/2, or 4d2D3/2 levels was obtained.

Charge exchange in zinc-neon

Excitation of the 4d and 5p levels of Zn(+) by charge exchange between Ne(+) and Zn was investigated. From measured electron temperature and line intensity ratios it was concluded that charge exchange is the dominant mechanism for populating the 4d 2D5/2 level of Zn(+). Comparison of Zn-Ne and Zn-Ar results imply the same conclusion. No evidence for charge exchange as the dominant pumping mechanism for the 5p 2P1/2, 5p 2P3/2, or 4d 2D3/2 levels was obtained.

The pumping mechanism for the neon-nitrogen nuclear excited laser

In order to determine the physical processes for pumping this laser, a detailed study of the afterglow system has been performed. The pumping mechanism has been found to be collisional-radiative electron-ion recombination. Microwave quenching of both the laser and spontaneous afterglow light have shown conclusively that a recombination process directly produces a nitrogen atom in either the upper laser level or, more likely, in a higher lying energy level which rapidly de-excites to the upper laser level.

Dielectronic recombination rates, ionization equilibrium, and radiative energy-loss rates for neon, magnesium, and sulfur ions in low-density plasmas

Results of detailed and systematic calculations are presented for the total dielectronic recombination rate coefficients for the ions of Ne, Mg, and S in a low-density predominantly hydrogen plasma. The new recombination rates are used to calculate solar corona ionization-equilibrium distributions of the ions. The most important effect of dielectronic recombination for ions in corona equilibrium is found to be a shift in the maximum-abundance temperatures toward higher temperatures, which are in some cases reduced from those predicted on the basis of the simple Burgess formula.

A neon-E rich phase in Orgueil - Results of stepwise heating experiments

A Ne-E rich phase was separated from the Orgeuil carbonaceous chondrite. He and Ne were analyzed in this phase and in an Orgueil residual bulk silicate sample using the stepwise heating technique. Ne-E was found to be released from the Ne-E rich phase at temperatures as low as 500 C; however, gas richest in Ne-E is observed at the highest temperatures (1230 C). The following limits for the isotopic composition of Ne-E were obtained: Ne-20/Ne-22 less than 1.52; Ne-21/Ne-22 less than 0.0244.
