Grazing Incidence Optics for X-rays Interferometry

Grazing incidence mirror parameters and constraints for x-ray interferometry are described. We present interferometer system tolerances and ray trace results used to define mirror surface accuracy requirements. Mirror material, surface figure, roughness, and geometry are evaluated based on analysis results. We also discuss mirror mount design constraints, finite element analysis, environmental issues, and solutions. Challenges associated with quantifying high accuracy mirror surface quality are addressed and test results are compared with theoretical predictions.

A Multiplicity Survey of Chromospherically Active and Inactive Stars

Surveys of the three samples of solar-type stars, segregated by chromospheric emission level, were made to determine their multiplicity fractions and to investigate the evolution of multiplicity with age. In total, 245 stars were searched for companions with DeltaV <= 3.0 and separations of 0.035" to 1.08" using optical speckle interferometry, By incorporating the visual micrometer survey for duplicity of the LamontHussey Observatory, the angular coverage was extended to 5.0" with no change in in the DeltaV limit. This magnitude difference allows mass ratios of 0.63 and larger to be detected throughout a search region of 2-127 AU for the stars observed. The 84 primaries observed in the chromospherically active sample are presumably part of a young population and are found to have a multiplicity fraction of 17.9% +/- 4.6%. The sample of 118 inactive, presumably older, primaries were selected and observed using identical methods and are found to have a multiplicity fraction of only 8.5% +/- 2.7%. Given the known link between chromospheric activity and age, these results tentatively imply a decreasing stellar multiplicity fraction from 1 to 4 Gyr, the approximate ages of the two samples. Finally, only two of the 14 very active primaries observed were found to have a companion meeting the survey detection parameters. In this case, many of the systems are either very young, or close, RS CVn type multiples that are unresolvable using techniques employed here.

Fourier-transform optical microsystems

The design, fabrication, and initial characterization of a miniature single-pass Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS) that has an optical bench that measures 1 cm x 5 cm x 10 cm is presented. The FTS is predicated on the classic Michelson interferometer design with a moving mirror. Precision translation of the mirror is accomplished by microfabrication of dovetailed bearing surfaces along single-crystal planes in silicon. Although it is miniaturized, the FTS maintains a relatively high spectral resolution, 0.1 cm-1, with adequate optical throughput.

Optimal collision avoidance guidance for formation-flying applications

Several proposed space science missions require deployment of a number of spacecraft to form a single functional unit or a formation flying spacecraft. There are many applications of a formation flying spacecraft; variable baseline optical space interferometry is one of them.

Design of the ST 3 Formation Flying Interferometer

The interferometer will operate in both a single spacecraft mode and a formation flying mode using two spacecraft. The primary goal is to validate interferometer and formation flying technology for future missions.

Design and fabrication of a brassboard optical bench structure for space interferometry mission

The Space Interferometry Mission (SIM), consisting of an orbiting pair of telescopes, will be used for characterization of extrasolar planetary systems and for associated astrophysics research. To maximize the capabilities of this instrument, extensive technology development has been performed, much of it to understand and verify the performance of precision structures.

Eta Carinae in the Context of the Most Massive Stars

Eta Car, with its historical outbursts, visible ejecta and massive, variable winds, continues to challenge both observers and modelers. In just the past five years over 100 papers have been published on this fascinating object. We now know it to be a massive binary system with a 5.54-year period. In January 2009, Car underwent one of its periodic low-states, associated with periastron passage of the two massive stars. This event was monitored by an intensive multi-wavelength campaign ranging from -rays to radio. A large amount of data was collected to test a number of evolving models including 3-D models of the massive interacting winds. August 2009 was an excellent time for observers and theorists to come together and review the accumulated studies, as have occurred in four meetings since 1998 devoted to Eta Car. Indeed, Car behaved both predictably and unpredictably during this most recent periastron, spurring timely discussions. Coincidently, WR140 also passed through periastron in early 2009. It, too, is a intensively studied massive interacting binary. Comparison of its properties, as well as the properties of other massive stars, with those of Eta Car is very instructive. These well-known examples of evolved massive binary systems provide many clues as to the fate of the most massive stars. What are the effects of the interacting winds, of individual stellar rotation, and of the circumstellar material on what we see as hypernovae/supernovae? We hope to learn. Topics discussed in this 1.5 day Joint Discussion were: Car: the 2009.0 event: Monitoring campaigns in X-rays, optical, radio, interferometry WR140 and HD5980: similarities and differences to Car LBVs and Eta Carinae: What is the relationship? Massive binary systems, wind interactions and 3-D modeling Shapes of the Homunculus & Little Homunculus: what do we learn about mass ejection? Massive stars: the connection to supernovae, hypernovae and gamma ray bursters Where do we go from here? Separated Spacecraft Interferometer Concept for the New Millenium Program

A separated spacecraft optical interferometer mission concept proposed for NASA'a New Millenium Program is described. The interferometer insturment is distributed over three small spacecraft: two spacecraft serve as collectors, directing starlight toward a third spacecraft which combines the light and performs the interferometric detection.
