Multiple chiral bands in $^{137}$Nd

Two new bands have been identified in 137 Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in 137 Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. Overall, the present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of odd-even and even-even nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segre chart.

A cross-frontier quest to reveal the origin of the Universe [Slides]

The Standard Model is one of the most well-tested theories in Particle Physics. The particle content was completed by the discovery of the Higgs boson. However, it does not explain the complete picture. This report discusses physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM Physics).

Experiments to investigate particulate materials in reduced gravity fields

Study investigates agglomeration and macroscopic behavior in reduced gravity fields of particles of known properties by measuring and correlating thermal and acoustical properties of particulate materials. Experiment evaluations provide a basis for a particle behavior theory and measure bulk properties of particulate materials in reduced gravity.

Diffraction analysis of Doppler signal characteristics for a cross-beam laser Doppler velocimeter

Based on scalar diffraction theory, single particle scattering characteristics for a cross-beam laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) have been computed for different particle sizes under varied instrumentation configurations. The modulating component of the scattered signal has been shown to depend upon particle size, shape, and collecting aperture for a given probe volume fringe spacing. Experimental verifications of some of the predictions are presented, and some of the limitations using an LDV as a particle sizing instrument are discussed.

Heavy Ion Fragmentation Experiments at the Bevatron

Fragmentation processes of heavy nuclei in matter using the heavy-ion capability of the Bevatron were studied. The purpose was to obtain the single particle inclusive spectra of secondary nuclei produced at 0 deg by the fragmentation of heavy ion beam projectiles. The process being examined is B+T yields F + anything, where B is the beam nucleus, T is the target nucleus, and F is the detected fragment. The fragments F are isotopically identified by experimental procedures involving magnetic analysis, energy loss and time-of-flight measurements. Attempts were also made to: (1) measure the total and partial production cross section for all isotopes, (2) test the applicability of high-energy multi-particle interaction theory to nuclear fragmentation, (3) apply the cross-section data and fragmentation probabilities to cosmic ray transport theory, and (4) search for systematic behavior of fragment production as a means to improve existing semi-empirical theories of cross sections.
